In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of viscous incompressible 2D flow in the exterior of a small material obstacle. We fix the initial vorticity $ω_0$ and the circulation $γ$ of the initial flow around the obstacle. We prove that, if $γ$ is sufficiently small, the limit flow satisfies the full-plane Navier-Stokes system, with initial vorticity $ω_0 + γδ$, where $δ$ is the standard Dirac measure. The result should be contrasted with the corresponding inviscid result obtained by the authors in [Comm P.D.E. 28 (2003) 349-379], where the effect of the small obstacle appears in the coefficients of the PDE and not only on the initial data. The main ingredients of the proof are $L^p-L^q$ estimates for the Stokes operator in an exterior domain, a priori estimates inspired on Kato's fixed point method, energy estimates, renormalization and interpolation.
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
The present work is devoted to proving that the boundary regularity of the three dimensional density patch persists by time evolution for inhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow, with some smallness condition on the initial velocity.
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More impo…
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
We establish the regularity of weak solutions for the vorticity equation associated to a family of desingularised models for vortex filament dynamics in 3D incompressible viscous flows. These include and generalise the classical model "of an allowance for the thickness of the vortices" due to Louis Rosenhead in 1930. Our approach is based on an interplay between the geometry of vorticity and analytic inequalities in Sobolev spaces.
In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
We investigate the local wellposedness of incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations on the Torus $\T^3$, with initial data in the critical Besov spaces. Under some smallness assumption on the velocity in the critical space $B^{\frac{1}{2}}\_{2,1}(\T^3)$, the global-in-time existence of the solution is proved. The initial density is required to belong to~$B^{\frac{3}{2}}\_{2,1}(\T^3)$ but not supposed to be small.
In this paper we study the dynamics of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three. More precisely we investigate the trajectory of the rigid body in the limit when the its mass and its size tend to zero. We show that the velocity of the center of mass of the rigid body coincides with the background fluid velocity in the limit. We are able to consider the case where the density of the small rigid body is uniformly bounded respect to its size.
In [F. Jiang, S. Jiang, On instability and stability of three-dimensional gravity driven viscous flows in a bounded domain, Adv. Math., 264 (2014) 831--863], Jiang et.al. investigated the instability of Rayleigh--Taylor steady-state of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. In particular, they proved the steady-state is nonlinearly unstable under a restrictive condition of that the derivative function of steady density possesses a positive lower bound. In this article, by exploiting a standard energy functional a…
We consider the linearized and nonlinear stationary incompressible flow around rotating and translating body in the exterior domain B with Lipschitz boundary. We derive the pointwise estimates for the pressure in both cases. Moreover, we consider the linearized problem in a truncation domain B_R of the exterior domain B under certain artificial boundary conditions on the truncating boundary and then compare this solution with the solution in the exterior domain B to get the truncation error estimate.
Cagnetti, Gomes, Mitake and Tran (2013) introduced a new idea to study the large time behavior for degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations. In this paper, we apply the method to study the large-time behavior of the solution to the obstacle problem for degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations. We establish the convergence result under rather general assumptions.
Under this method second order \textbf{partial differential equations (PDE's)} can be reduce to first order PDE's, simplifying the Initial value problem \textbf{IVP} or Border value Problem \textbf{BVP} for most cases of second-order differential equation, letting easiest proofs for existence and uniqueness of the PVI and BVP problems.
We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.
We study the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of rotating incompressible viscous fluids with periodic boundary conditions. The asymptotic expansions, as time goes to infinity, are derived in all Gevrey spaces for any Leray-Hopf weak solutions in terms of oscillating, exponentially decaying functions. The results are established for all non-zero rotation speeds, and for both cases with and without the zero spatial average of the solutions. Our method makes use of the Poincaré waves to rewrite the equations, and then implements the Gevrey norm techniques to deal with the resulting time…
We introduce two 2D mechanical models reproducing the evolution of two viscous tissues in contact. Their main property is to model the swirling cell motions while keeping the tissues segregated, as observed during vertebrate embryo elongation. Segregation is encoded differently in the two models: by passive or active segregation (based on a mechanical repulsion pressure). We compute the incompressible limits of the two models, and obtain strictly segregated solutions. The two models thus obtained are compared. A striking feature in the active segregation model is the persistence of the repulsi…
In this paper we study the well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a diffuse-interface model for the mixture of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects. The governing system consists of modified Navier--Stokes equations coupled with phase-field and energy transport equations. We first derive an energy inequality that illustrates the dissipative nature of the system under the assumption that the initial temperature variation is properly small. Then we establish the existence of weak/strong solutions via the energy method and discuss the long-time dynam…
The paper deals with the existence and almost periodic homogenization of some model of generalized Navier-Stokes equations. We first establish an existence result for non-stationary Ladyzhenskaya equations with a given non constant density. The external force depends nonlinearly on the velocity. Next, to proceed with homogenization, as the density of the fluid is non constant, we combine the sigma-convergence method with some compactness arguments.
In this paper, we consider a layer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic filed in a horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary bounded by a free boundary and below bounded by a flat rigid interface. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem for both the case with and without surface tension. Moreover, we show that the global solution decays to the equilibrium exponentially in the case with surface tension, however the global solution decays to the equilibrium at an almost exponential rate in the case without surface tension.
We consider a single disk moving under the influence of a 2D viscous fluid and we study the asymptotic as the size of the solid tends to zero.If the density of the solid is independent of $\varepsilon$, the energy equality is not sufficient to obtain a uniform estimate for the solid velocity. This will be achieved thanks to the optimal $L^p-L^q$ decay estimates of the semigroup associated to the fluid-rigid body system and to a fixed point argument. Next, we will deduce the convergence to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^2$.
Toward P.-L. Lions' open question in \cite{Lions96} concerning the propagation of regularity for density patch, we establish the global existence of solutions to the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with initial density given by $(1-η){\bf 1}_{\Om_0}+{\bf 1}_{\Om_0^c}$ for some small enough constant $η$ and some $W^{k+2,p}$ domain $\Om_0,$ and with initial vorticity belonging to $L^1\cap L^p$ and with appropriate tangential regularities. Furthermore, we prove that the regularity of the domain $\Om_0$ is preserved by time evolution.
In this article we consider viscous flow in the exterior of an obstacle satisfying the standard no-slip boundary condition at the surface of the obstacle. We seek conditions under which solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the exterior domain converge to solutions of the Euler system in the full space when both viscosity and the size of the obstacle vanish. We prove that this convergence is true assuming two hypothesis: first, that the initial exterior domain velocity converges strongly in $L^2$ to the full-space initial velocity and second, that the diameter of the obstacle is smaller tha…
We are concerned with an initial boundary value problem for the nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows with non-negative density. First of all, we show that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Then, under some smallness condition, we prove that there is a unique global strong solution to the 3D viscous nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows. Our method relies upon the delicate energy estimates and regularity properties of Stokes system and elliptic equation.
We consider the motion of $N$ rigid bodies -- compact sets $(\mathcal{S}^1_\varepsilon, \cdots, \mathcal{S}^N_\varepsilon )_{\varepsilon > 0}$ -- immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a domain in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We show the fluid flow is not influenced by the presence of the infinitely many bodies in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and $N=N(\varepsilon)\rightarrow\infty$ as soon as \[ {\rm diam}[\mathcal{S}^i_\varepsilon ] \to 0 \ \mbox{as}\ \varepsilon \to 0 ,\ i=1,\cdots, N(\varepsilon). \] The result depends solely on the geometry of t…
We consider a free boundary problem of the Navier--Stokes equations in the three-dimensional Euclidean space with moving contact line, where the 90$^\circ$-contact angle condition is posed. We show that for given $T > 0$ the problem is local well-posed on $(0, T)$ provided that the initial data are small. In contrast to the strategy in Wilke (2013), we study the transformed problem in an $L^p$-in-time and $L^q$-in-space setting, which yields the optimal regularity of the initial data.
We consider the Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms describing the stationary flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body moving at a constant velocity and rotating at a constant angular velocity. In a previous paper, we prove a representation formula for weak solutions of the system. Here the representation formula is used to get an asymptotic expansion of respectively velocity and its gradient, and to establish pointwise decay estimates of remainder terms. Our results are based on a fundamental solution proposed by Guenther and Thomann J. Math. Fluid Mech., 8 …
We study a diffuse interface model for the flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids in a bounded domain. The fluids are assumed to be macroscopically immiscible, but a partial mixing in a small interfacial region is assumed in the model. Moreover, diffusion of both components is taken into account. In contrast to previous works, we study a model for the general case that the fluids have different densities due to Lowengrub and Truskinovski. This leads to an inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system coupled to a Cahn-Hilliard system, where the density of the mixture depends on the concentra…
In this paper, we study the problem concerning the approximation of a rigid obstacle for flows governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional case. The idea is to consider a highly viscous fluid in the place of the obstacle. Formally, as the fluid viscosity goes to infinity inside the region occupied by the obstacle, we obtain the original problem in the limit. The main goal is to establish a better regularity of approximate solutions. In particular, the pointwise estimate for the gradient of the velocity is proved. We give numerical evidence that the penalized solut…
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
We consider an optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary conditions. We denote by $α$ the friction coefficient and we analyze the asymptotic behavior of such a problem as $α\to \infty$. More precisely, we prove that if we take an optimal control for each $α$, then there exists a sequence of optimal controls converging to an optimal control of the same optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with the Dirichlet boundary condition. We also show the convergence of the corresponding direct and adjoint states.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of particle rebound in a viscous incompressible fluid environment. We focus on the important case of no-slip boundary conditions, for which it is by now classical that, under certain assumptions, collisions cannot occur in finite time. Motivated by the desire to understand this fascinating yet counterintuitive fluid-structure interaction, we introduce a reduced model which we study both analytically and numerically. In this simplified framework, we provide conditions which allow to prove that rebound is possible even in the absence of a topological …
The purpose of this paper is to provide a large class of initial data which generates global smooth solution of the 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the whole space~$\R^3$. This class of data is based on functions which vary slowly in one direction. The idea is that 2-D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system with large data is globally well-posedness and we construct the 3-D approximate solutions by the 2-D solutions with a parameter. One of the key point of this study is the investigation of the time decay properties of the solutions to the 2-D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes …
We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid with Navierslip-with-friction conditions at the solid boundary. The fluid-solid system occupies the whole plane. We provethe small-time exact controllability of the position and velocity of the solid when the control takes the form of adistributed force supported in a compact subset (with nonvoid interior) of the fluid domain, away from the body. The strategy relies on the introduction of a small parameter: we consider fast and strong amplitude controls forwhich the ``Navier-Stokes+rigid body'' sys…
Consider the dynamics of a layer of viscous incompressible fluid under the influence of gravity. The upper boundary is a free boundary with the effect of surface tension taken into account, and the lower boundary is a fixed boundary on which the Navier-slip condition is imposed. It is proved that there is a uniform time interval on which the estimates independent of both viscosity and surface tension coefficients of the solution can be established. This then allows one to justify the vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits by the strong compactness argument. In the presence of surface t…
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
This paper concerns the dynamics of a layer of incompressible viscous fluid lying above a rigid plane and with an upper boundary given by a free surface. The fluid is subject to a constant external force with a horizontal component, which arises in modeling the motion of such a fluid down an inclined plane, after a coordinate change. We consider the problem both with and without surface tension for horizontally periodic flows. This problem gives rise to shear-flow equilibrium solutions, and the main thrust of this paper is to study the asymptotic stability of the equilibria in certain paramete…
Toward the open question proposed by P.-L. Lions in \cite{Lions96} concerning the propagation of regularities of density patch for viscous inhomogeneous flow, we first establish the global in time well-posedness of two-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with initial density being of the form: $η_1{\bf 1}_{\Om_0}+η_2{\bf 1}_{\Om_0^c},$ for any pair of positive constants $(η_1,η_2),$ and for any bounded, simply connected $W^{k+2,p}(\R^2)$ domain $\Om_0.$ We then prove that the time evolved domain $\Om(t)$ also belongs to the class of $W^{k+2,p}$ for any $t>0.$ Thus in …
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the two dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the exterior of a curve when the curve shrinks to a point. This work links two previous results: [Iftimie, Lopes Filho and Nussenzveig Lopes, Two Dimensional Incompressible Ideal Flow Around a Small Obstacle, Comm. PDE, 28 (2003), 349-379] and [Lacave, Two Dimensional Incompressible Ideal Flow Around a Thin Obstacle Tending to a Curve, Ann. IHP, Anl, 26 (2009), 1121-1148]. The second goal of this work is to complete the previous article, in defining the way the obstacles shrink to a curve. In…
In this paper, we address the space-time decay properties for strong solutions to the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD equations. We obtained the same space-time decay rates as those of the heat equation. Based on the temporal decay results in \cite{cs}, we find that one can obtain weighted estimates of the magnetic field $B$ by direct weighted energy estimate, and then by regarding the magnetic convection term as a forcing term in the velocity equations, we can obtain the weighted estimates for the vorticity, which yields the corresponding estimates for the velocity field. The higher…
We consider the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in a smooth two or three dimensional bounded domain, in the case where the initial density is only bounded. Existence and uniqueness for such initial data was shown recently in [10], but the stability issue was left open. After observing that the solutions constructed in [10] have exponential decay, a result of independent interest, we prove the stability with respect to initial data, first in Lagrangian coordinates, and then in the Eulerian frame. We actually obtain stability in $L_2({\mathbb R}_+;H^1(Ω))$ for the velocity and …
In this paper, we consider the 2-dimensional non-viscous Oldroyd-B model. In the case of the ratio equal 1~($α=0$), it is a difficult case since the velocity field $u(t,x)$ is no longer decay. Fortunately, by {observing the exponential decay} of the stress tensor $τ(t,x)$, we succeeded in proving the global existence for this system with some large initial data. Moreover, we give an unsteady result: when the ratio is close to 1~($a\rightarrow 0$), the system is not steady for large time. This implies an interesting physical phenomenon that the term $a\mathbb{D}u$ is a bridge between the transf…
We consider a new way of establishing Navier wall laws. Considering a bounded domain $Ω$ of R N , N=2,3, surrounded by a thin layer $Σε$, along a part $Γ$2 of its boundary $\partial Ω$, we consider a Navier-Stokes flow in $Ω\cup \partial Ω\cup Σε$ with Reynolds' number of order 1/$ε$ in $Σε$. Using $Γ$-convergence arguments, we describe the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of this problem and get a general Navier law involving a matrix of Borel measures having the same support contained in the interface $Γ$2. We then consider two special cases where we characterize this matrix of measures.…
The motion of an elastic solid inside of an incompressible viscous fluid is ubiquitous in nature. Mathematically, such motion is described by a PDE system that couples the parabolic and hyperbolic phases, the latter inducing a loss of regularity which has left the basic question of existence open until now. In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of such motions (locally in time), when the elastic solid is the linear Kirchhoff elastic material. The solution is found using a topological fixed-point theorem that requires the analysis of a linear problem consisting of the coupling be…
This paper is concerned with a numerical simulation of shape optimization in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible flow governed by Navier--Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions containing the pressure. The minimization problem of total dissipated energy was established in the fluid domain. We derive the structures of shape gradient of the cost functional by using the differentiability of a minimax formulation involving a Lagrange functional with a function space parametrization technique. Finally a gradient type algorithm is effectively used for our problem.
In this paper we study a coupled system modeling the movement of a deformable solid immersed in a fluid. For the solid we consider a given deformation that has to obey several physical constraints. The motion of the fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a time-dependent bounded domain of $\R^3$, and the solid satisfies the Newton's laws. Our contribution consists in adapting and completing some results of ARMA 2008 in dimension 3, in a framework where the regularity of the deformation of the solid is limited. We rewrite the main system in domains which do not depend…
