In this paper, we study the problem concerning the approximation of a rigid obstacle for flows governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional case. The idea is to consider a highly viscous fluid in the place of the obstacle. Formally, as the fluid viscosity goes to infinity inside the region occupied by the obstacle, we obtain the original problem in the limit.
The main goal is to establish a better regularity of approximate solutions. In particular, the pointwise estimate for the gradient of the velocity is proved.
We give numerical evidence that the penalized solution can reasonably approximate the problem, even for relatively small values of the penalty parameter.
Cagnetti, Gomes, Mitake and Tran (2013) introduced a new idea to study the large time behavior for degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations. In this paper, we apply the method to study the large-time behavior of the solution to the obstacle problem for degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations. We establish the convergence result under rather general assumptions.
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of viscous incompressible 2D flow in the exterior of a small material obstacle. We fix the initial vorticity $ω_0$ and the circulation $γ$ of the initial flow around the obstacle. We prove that, if $γ$ is sufficiently small, the limit flow satisfies the full-plane Navier-Stokes system, with initial vorticity $ω_0 + γδ$, where $δ$ is the standard Dirac measure. The result should be contrasted with the corresponding inviscid result obtained by the authors in [Comm P.D.E. 28 (2003) 349-379], where the effect of the small obstacle appears in the coeffi…
In this paper we study the dynamics of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three. More precisely we investigate the trajectory of the rigid body in the limit when the its mass and its size tend to zero. We show that the velocity of the center of mass of the rigid body coincides with the background fluid velocity in the limit. We are able to consider the case where the density of the small rigid body is uniformly bounded respect to its size.
In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.
We consider the motion of a rigid body, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. Navier's condition is prescribed on the boundary of the body. We give the global in a time solvability result of weak solution. The result permits a possibility of collisions of the body with the boundary of the domain.
We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.
We consider a single disk moving under the influence of a 2D viscous fluid and we study the asymptotic as the size of the solid tends to zero.If the density of the solid is independent of $\varepsilon$, the energy equality is not sufficient to obtain a uniform estimate for the solid velocity. This will be achieved thanks to the optimal $L^p-L^q$ decay estimates of the semigroup associated to the fluid-rigid body system and to a fixed point argument. Next, we will deduce the convergence to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^2$.
In this paper we study the interaction of a small rigid body in a viscous compressible fluid. The system occupies a bounded three dimensional domain. The object it allowed to freely move and its dynamics follows the Newton's laws. We show that as the size of the object converges to zero the system fluid plus rigid body converges to the compressible Navier-Stokes system under some mild lower bound on the mass and the inertia momentum. It is a first result of homogenization in the case of fluid-structure interaction in the compressible situation. As a corollary we slightly improved the result on…
We show that a steady-state solution ${\bf U}$ to the system of equations of a Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating body is nonlinearly unstable if the associated linear operator $\cal L$ has a part of the spectrum in the half-plane $\{λ\in\mathbb C;\ {\rm Re}\, λ>0\}$. Our result does not follow from known methods, %on spectral instability, mainly because the basic nonlinear operator is not bounded in the same space in which the instability is studied. As an auxiliary result of independent interest, we also show that the uniform growth bound of the $C_0$--semigroup ${\rm e}^{{\cal L} t}$ is equ…
We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid with Navierslip-with-friction conditions at the solid boundary. The fluid-solid system occupies the whole plane. We provethe small-time exact controllability of the position and velocity of the solid when the control takes the form of adistributed force supported in a compact subset (with nonvoid interior) of the fluid domain, away from the body. The strategy relies on the introduction of a small parameter: we consider fast and strong amplitude controls forwhich the ``Navier-Stokes+rigid body'' sys…
We consider the motion of a small rigid object immersed in a viscous compressible fluid in the 3-dimensional Eucleidean space. Assuming the object is a ball of a small radius $\varepsilon$ we show that the behavior of the fluid is not influenced by the object in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. The result holds for the isentropic pressure law $p(\varrho) = a \varrho^γ$ for any $γ> \frac{3}{2}$ under mild assumptions concerning the rigid body density. In particular, the latter may be bounded as soon as $γ> 3$. The proof uses a new method of construction of the test functions in the wea…
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
In this article we consider viscous flow in the exterior of an obstacle satisfying the standard no-slip boundary condition at the surface of the obstacle. We seek conditions under which solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the exterior domain converge to solutions of the Euler system in the full space when both viscosity and the size of the obstacle vanish. We prove that this convergence is true assuming two hypothesis: first, that the initial exterior domain velocity converges strongly in $L^2$ to the full-space initial velocity and second, that the diameter of the obstacle is smaller tha…
We consider the motion of $N$ rigid bodies -- compact sets $(\mathcal{S}^1_\varepsilon, \cdots, \mathcal{S}^N_\varepsilon )_{\varepsilon > 0}$ -- immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a domain in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We show the fluid flow is not influenced by the presence of the infinitely many bodies in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and $N=N(\varepsilon)\rightarrow\infty$ as soon as \[ {\rm diam}[\mathcal{S}^i_\varepsilon ] \to 0 \ \mbox{as}\ \varepsilon \to 0 ,\ i=1,\cdots, N(\varepsilon). \] The result depends solely on the geometry of t…
We consider the stabilizability of a fluid-structure interaction system where the fluid is viscous and compressible and the structure is a rigid ball. The feedback control of the system acts on the ball and corresponds to a force that would be produced by a spring and a damper connecting the center of the ball to a fixed point $h_1$. We prove the global-in-time existence of strong solutions for the corresponding system under a smallness condition on the initial velocities and on the distance between the initial position of the center of the ball and $h_1$. Then, we show with our feedback law, …
In [Lacave, IHP, ana, to appear (2008)] the author considered the two dimensional Euler equations in the exterior of a thin obstacle shrinking to a curve and determined the limit velocity. In the present work, we consider the same problem in the viscous case, proving convergence to a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a curve. The uniqueness of the limit solution is also shown.
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
We consider the system of equations modeling the free motion of a rigid body with a cavity filled by a viscous (Navier-Stokes) liquid. We give a rigorous proof of Zhukovskiy's Theorem, which states that in the limit of time going to infinity, the relative fluid velocity tends to zero and the rigid velocity of the full structure tends to a steady rotation around one of the principle axes of inertia. The existence of global weak solutions for this system was established previously. In particular, we prove that every weak solution of this type is subject to Zhukovskiy's Theorem. Independently of …
From the steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes models, a penalization method has been considered by several authors for approximating those fluid equations around obstacles. In this work, we present a justification for using fictitious domains to study obstacles immersed in incompressible viscous fluids through a simplified version of Brinkman's law for porous media. If the scalar function $ψ$ is considered as the inverse of permeability, it is possible to study the singularities of $ψ$ as approximations of obstacles (when $ψ$ tends to $\infty$) or of the domain corresponding to the fluid (when $ψ= …
We study inertial motions of the coupled system, S, constituted by a rigid body containing a cavity that is completely filled with a viscous liquid. We show that for data of arbitrary size (initial kinetic energy and total angular momentum) every weak solution (a la Leray-Hopf) converges, as time goes to infinity, to a uniform rotation, thus proving a famous "conjecture" of Zhukovskii. Moreover we show that, in a wide range of initial data, this rotation must occur along the central axis of inertia of S that has the largest moment of inertia. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions fo…

We study models of dilute rigid rod-like polymer solutions. We establish the global well-posedness the Doi model for large data, and for arbitrarily large viscous stress parameter. The main ingredient in the proof is the fact that the viscous stress adds dissipation to high derivatives of velocity.
The equations governing the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body that performs a prescribed time-periodic motion with constant axes of translation and rotation are investigated. Under the assumption that the period and the angular velocity of the prescribed rigid-body motion are compatible, and that the mean translational velocity is non-zero, existence of a time-periodic solution is established. The proof is based on an appropriate linearization, which is examined within a setting of absolutely convergent Fourier series. Since the corresponding resolvent problem is ill-p…
In this paper, we investigate optimal boundary control problems for Cahn-Hilliard variational inequalities with a dynamic boundary condition involving double obstacle potentials and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. We prove existence of optimal controls and derive first-order necessary conditions of optimality. The general strategy, which follows the lines of the recent approach by Colli, Farshbaf-Shaker, Sprekels (see the preprint arXiv:1308.5617) to the (simpler) Allen-Cahn case, is the follo…

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect terms in an exterior domain with Navier-slip boundary condition and with far-field vacuum. This problem is related to the motion of the compressible viscous flow past a rotating obstacle. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, provided that the initial mass is small. The initial data and the angular velocity of the obstacle are allowed to have large oscillations.
We consider the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid filling the whole space exterior to a moving with rotation and translation obstacle. We show that the Stokes operator around the steady flow in the exterior of this obstacle generates a $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p$ space and then develop a series of $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of such semigroup. As an application, we give out the stability of such steady flow when the initial disturbance in $L^3$ and the steady flow are sufficiently small.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible Newtonian fluid in a bounded domain with in and out flux boundary conditions. We show that if the boundary velocity coincides with that of a rigid motion, all solutions converge to an equilibrium state for large times.
We are concerned with the linearized, isotropic and homogeneous elastic scattering problem by (possibly many) small rigid obstacles of arbitrary Lipschitz regular shapes in 3D. Based on the Foldy-Lax approximation, valid under a sufficient condition on the number of the obstacles, the size and the minimum distance between them, we show that any of the two body waves, namely the pressure waves P or the shear waves S, is enough for solving the inverse problem of detecting these scatterers and estimating their sizes. Further, it is also shown that the shear-horizontal part SH or the shear vertica…
We are concerned with the acoustic scattering problem by many small rigid obstacles of arbitrary shapes. We give a sufficient condition on the number $M$ and the diameter $a$ of the obstacles as well as the minimum distance $d$ between them under which the Foldy-Lax approximation is valid. Precisely, if we use single layer potentials for the representation of the scattered fields, as it is done sometimes in the literature, then this condition is $(M-1)\frac{a}{d^2} <c$, with an appropriate constant $c$, while if we use double layer potentials then a weaker condition of the form $\sqrt{M-1}\fra…
In this work we are interested in estimating the size of a cavity D immersed in a bounded domain Ω, contained in R^d, d=2,3, filled with a viscous fluid governed by the Stokes system, by means of velocity and Cauchy forces on the external boundary of Ω. More precisely, we establish some lower and upper bounds in terms of the difference between the external measurements when the obstacle is present and without the object. The proof of the result is based on interior regularity results and quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the solution of the Stokes system.
We investigate the asymptotic limit of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with the Mach number proportional to a small parameter $\varepsilon \to 0$, the Froude number proportional to $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ and when the fluid occupies large domain with spatial obstacle of rough surface varying when $\varepsilon \to 0$. The limit velocity field is solenoidal and satisfies the incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. Our studies are based on weak solutions approach and in order to pass to the limit in a convective term we apply the spectral analysis of the associated wave propa…
We consider a coupled PDE-ODE system describing the motion of the rigid body in a container filled with the incompressible, viscous fluid. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via Navier slip boundary condition. We prove that the local in time strong solution is unique in the larger class of weak solutions on the interval of its existence. This is the first weak-strong uniqueness result in the area of fluid-structure interaction with a moving boundary.
Consider the resolvent problem associated with the linearized viscous flow around a rotating body. Within a setting of classical Sobolev spaces, this problem is not well posed on the whole imaginary axis. Therefore, a framework of homogeneous Sobolev spaces is introduced where existence of a unique solution can be guaranteed for every purely imaginary resolvent parameter. For this purpose, the problem is reduced to an auxiliary problem, which is studied by means of Fourier analytic tools in a group setting. In the end, uniform resolvent estimates can be derived, which lead to the existence of …
Linear motion of a rigid body in a special kind of Lorentz gas is mathematically analyzed. The rigid body moves against gas drag according to Newton's equation. The gas model is a special Lorentz gas consisting of gas molecules and background obstacles, which was introduced in~(Tsuji and Aoki: J. Stat. Phys. \textbf{146}, 620--645, 2012). The specular boundary condition is imposed on the resulting kinetic equation. This study complements the numerical study by Tsuji and Aoki cited above --- although the setting in this paper is slightly different from theirs, qualitatively the same asymptotic …

We consider the free boundary problem for two layers of immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluid in a uniform gravitational field, lying above a rigid bottom in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The effect of surface tension is either taken into account at both free boundaries or neglected at both. We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, so we assume that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid. When the surface tension at the free internal interface is below a critical value, which we identify, we establish that the problem under consideration is nonli…
Consider the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a 3D exterior domain when a rigid body moves with prescribed time-dependent translational and angular velocities. For the linearized non-autonomous system, $L^q$-$L^r$ smoothing action near the initial time as well as generation of the evolution operator was shown by Hansel and Rhandi (J. Reine Angew. Math. 2014) under reasonable conditions. In this paper we develop the $L^q$-$L^r$ decay estimates of the evolution operator and then apply them to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem.
Fluid flows around a symmetric obstacle generate vortices which may lead to symmetry breaking of the streamlines. We study this phenomenon for planar viscous flows governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations with constant inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary data in a rectangular channel containing a circular obstacle. In such (symmetric) framework, symmetry breaking is strictly related to the appearance of multiple solutions. Symmetry breaking properties of some Sobolev minimizers are studied and explicit bounds on the boundary velocity (in terms of the length and height of the channel) en…
This paper is devoted to the existence of a weak solution to a system describing a self-propelled motion of a rigid body in a viscous fluid in the whole $\mathbb{R}^3$. The fluid is modelled by the incompressible nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system with a nonnegative density. The motion of the rigid body is described by the balance of linear and angular momentum. We consider the case where slip is allowed at the fluid-solid interface through Navier condition and prove the global existence of a weak solution.
We consider the free boundary problem for a layer of viscous, incompressible fluid in a uniform gravitational field, lying above a rigid bottom and below the atmosphere. For the "semi-small" initial data, we prove the zero surface tension limit of the problem within a local time interval. The unique local strong solution with surface tension is constructed as the limit of a sequence of approximate solutions to a special parabolic regularization. For the small initial data, we prove the global-in-time zero surface tension limit of the problem.
