In [Lacave, IHP, ana, to appear (2008)] the author considered the two dimensional Euler equations in the exterior of a thin obstacle shrinking to a curve and determined the limit velocity. In the present work, we consider the same problem in the viscous case, proving convergence to a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a curve. The uniqueness of the limit solution is also shown.
In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the incompressible two-dimensional Euler equations in the exterior of a single smooth obstacle when the obstacle becomes very thin tending to a curve. We extend results by Iftimie, Lopes Filho and Nussenzveig Lopes, obtained in the context of an obstacle tending to a point, see [Comm. PDE, {\bf 28} (2003), 349-379].
In the analysis of the long-time behaviour of two-dimensional incompressible viscous fluids, Oseen vortices play a major role as attractors of any homogeneous solution with integrable initial vorticity. As a first step in the study of the density-dependent case, the present paper establishes the asymptotic stability of Oseen vortices for slighty inhomogeneous fluids with respect to localized regular perturbations.
In this paper, we consider turbulence from a geometric perspective based on the vorticity equations for incompressible viscous fluid flows. We derive several quantitative statements about the statistics of turbulent flows. In particular we establish an entropy decay inequality which involves the turbulent kinetic energy and $L^{1}$-enstrophy, and we identify the small time scale of the vorticity broken down and the vorticity creation under the universality assumption of small time scales of turbulence flows.
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for time-dependent flows of heat-conducting viscous incompressible fluids in channel-like domains on a time interval $(0,T)$. For the parabolic system with strong nonlinearities and including the artificial (the so called "do nothing") boundary conditions, we prove the local in time existence, global uniqueness and smoothness of the solution on a time interval $(0,T^*)$, where $0< T^* \leq T$.
We consider a class of viscous fluids with a general monotone dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient. We introduce the concept of dissipative solution to the associated initial boundary value problem inspired by the measure-valued solutions for the inviscid (Euler) system. We show the existence as well as the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of dissipative solutions. Finally, the dissipative solution enjoying certain extra regularity coincides with a strong solution of the same problem.
We consider the abstract initial value problem for the system of evolution equations which describe motion of incompressible viscous and heat-conductive fluids in a bounded domain. It is difficulty of our problem that we do not neglect the viscous dissipation function in contrast to the Boussinesq approximation. This problem has uniquely a mild solution locally in time for general initial data, and globally in time for small initial data. Moreover, a mild solution of this problem can be a strong or classical solution under appropriate assumptions for initial data. We prove the above properties…
We introduce a new sharp interface model for the flow of two immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluids. In contrast to classical models for two-phase flows we prescribe an evolution law for the interfaces that takes diffusional effects into account. This leads to a coupled system of Navier-Stokes and Mullins-Sekerka type parts that coincides with the asymptotic limit of a diffuse interface model. We prove the long-time existence of weak solutions, which is an open problem for the classical two-phase model. We show that the phase interfaces have in almost all points a generalized mean curvatur…
The relationship between the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows with low Mach number and the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic flows is investigated. More precisely, the convergence of weak solutions of the compressible isentropic viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations to the weak solutions of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations is proved as the density becomes constant and the Mach number goes to zero, that is, the corresponding incompressible limits are justified when the spatial domain is a periodic domain, the whole space, or a bounded domain.
Given a finite sequence of times $0<t_1<...<t_N$, we construct an example of a smooth solution of the free nonstationnary Navier--Stokes equations in $\R^d$, $d=2,3$, such that: (i) The velocity field $u(x,t)$ is spatially poorly localized at the beginning of the evolution but tends to concentrate until, as the time $t$ approaches $t_1$, it becomes well-localized. (ii) Then $u$ spreads out again after $t_1$, and such concentration-diffusion phenomena are later reproduced near the instants $t_2$, $t_3$, ...
We investigate the nonlinear instability of a smooth steady density profile solution of the threedimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a uniform gravitational field, including a Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solution with heavier density with increasing height (referred to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability). We first analyze the equations obtained from linearization around the steady density profile solution. Then we construct solutions of the linearized problem that grow in time in the Sobolev space Hk, thus leading to a global instability result fo…
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
The present work is devoted to proving that the boundary regularity of the three dimensional density patch persists by time evolution for inhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow, with some smallness condition on the initial velocity.
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More impo…
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
We establish the regularity of weak solutions for the vorticity equation associated to a family of desingularised models for vortex filament dynamics in 3D incompressible viscous flows. These include and generalise the classical model "of an allowance for the thickness of the vortices" due to Louis Rosenhead in 1930. Our approach is based on an interplay between the geometry of vorticity and analytic inequalities in Sobolev spaces.
In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
We investigate the local wellposedness of incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations on the Torus $\T^3$, with initial data in the critical Besov spaces. Under some smallness assumption on the velocity in the critical space $B^{\frac{1}{2}}\_{2,1}(\T^3)$, the global-in-time existence of the solution is proved. The initial density is required to belong to~$B^{\frac{3}{2}}\_{2,1}(\T^3)$ but not supposed to be small.
In this paper we study the dynamics of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three. More precisely we investigate the trajectory of the rigid body in the limit when the its mass and its size tend to zero. We show that the velocity of the center of mass of the rigid body coincides with the background fluid velocity in the limit. We are able to consider the case where the density of the small rigid body is uniformly bounded respect to its size.
In [F. Jiang, S. Jiang, On instability and stability of three-dimensional gravity driven viscous flows in a bounded domain, Adv. Math., 264 (2014) 831--863], Jiang et.al. investigated the instability of Rayleigh--Taylor steady-state of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. In particular, they proved the steady-state is nonlinearly unstable under a restrictive condition of that the derivative function of steady density possesses a positive lower bound. In this article, by exploiting a standard energy functional a…
We consider the linearized and nonlinear stationary incompressible flow around rotating and translating body in the exterior domain B with Lipschitz boundary. We derive the pointwise estimates for the pressure in both cases. Moreover, we consider the linearized problem in a truncation domain B_R of the exterior domain B under certain artificial boundary conditions on the truncating boundary and then compare this solution with the solution in the exterior domain B to get the truncation error estimate.
This paper is concerned with a numerical simulation of shape optimization in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible flow governed by Navier--Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions containing the pressure. The minimization problem of total dissipated energy was established in the fluid domain. We derive the structures of shape gradient of the cost functional by using the differentiability of a minimax formulation involving a Lagrange functional with a function space parametrization technique. Finally a gradient type algorithm is effectively used for our problem.
Under this method second order \textbf{partial differential equations (PDE's)} can be reduce to first order PDE's, simplifying the Initial value problem \textbf{IVP} or Border value Problem \textbf{BVP} for most cases of second-order differential equation, letting easiest proofs for existence and uniqueness of the PVI and BVP problems.
We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.
We study the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of rotating incompressible viscous fluids with periodic boundary conditions. The asymptotic expansions, as time goes to infinity, are derived in all Gevrey spaces for any Leray-Hopf weak solutions in terms of oscillating, exponentially decaying functions. The results are established for all non-zero rotation speeds, and for both cases with and without the zero spatial average of the solutions. Our method makes use of the Poincaré waves to rewrite the equations, and then implements the Gevrey norm techniques to deal with the resulting time…
We introduce two 2D mechanical models reproducing the evolution of two viscous tissues in contact. Their main property is to model the swirling cell motions while keeping the tissues segregated, as observed during vertebrate embryo elongation. Segregation is encoded differently in the two models: by passive or active segregation (based on a mechanical repulsion pressure). We compute the incompressible limits of the two models, and obtain strictly segregated solutions. The two models thus obtained are compared. A striking feature in the active segregation model is the persistence of the repulsi…
In this paper we study the well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a diffuse-interface model for the mixture of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects. The governing system consists of modified Navier--Stokes equations coupled with phase-field and energy transport equations. We first derive an energy inequality that illustrates the dissipative nature of the system under the assumption that the initial temperature variation is properly small. Then we establish the existence of weak/strong solutions via the energy method and discuss the long-time dynam…
The paper deals with the existence and almost periodic homogenization of some model of generalized Navier-Stokes equations. We first establish an existence result for non-stationary Ladyzhenskaya equations with a given non constant density. The external force depends nonlinearly on the velocity. Next, to proceed with homogenization, as the density of the fluid is non constant, we combine the sigma-convergence method with some compactness arguments.
In this paper, we consider a layer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic filed in a horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary bounded by a free boundary and below bounded by a flat rigid interface. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem for both the case with and without surface tension. Moreover, we show that the global solution decays to the equilibrium exponentially in the case with surface tension, however the global solution decays to the equilibrium at an almost exponential rate in the case without surface tension.
We consider a single disk moving under the influence of a 2D viscous fluid and we study the asymptotic as the size of the solid tends to zero.If the density of the solid is independent of $\varepsilon$, the energy equality is not sufficient to obtain a uniform estimate for the solid velocity. This will be achieved thanks to the optimal $L^p-L^q$ decay estimates of the semigroup associated to the fluid-rigid body system and to a fixed point argument. Next, we will deduce the convergence to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^2$.
Toward P.-L. Lions' open question in \cite{Lions96} concerning the propagation of regularity for density patch, we establish the global existence of solutions to the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with initial density given by $(1-η){\bf 1}_{\Om_0}+{\bf 1}_{\Om_0^c}$ for some small enough constant $η$ and some $W^{k+2,p}$ domain $\Om_0,$ and with initial vorticity belonging to $L^1\cap L^p$ and with appropriate tangential regularities. Furthermore, we prove that the regularity of the domain $\Om_0$ is preserved by time evolution.
We are concerned with an initial boundary value problem for the nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows with non-negative density. First of all, we show that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Then, under some smallness condition, we prove that there is a unique global strong solution to the 3D viscous nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows. Our method relies upon the delicate energy estimates and regularity properties of Stokes system and elliptic equation.
We consider the motion of $N$ rigid bodies -- compact sets $(\mathcal{S}^1_\varepsilon, \cdots, \mathcal{S}^N_\varepsilon )_{\varepsilon > 0}$ -- immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a domain in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We show the fluid flow is not influenced by the presence of the infinitely many bodies in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and $N=N(\varepsilon)\rightarrow\infty$ as soon as \[ {\rm diam}[\mathcal{S}^i_\varepsilon ] \to 0 \ \mbox{as}\ \varepsilon \to 0 ,\ i=1,\cdots, N(\varepsilon). \] The result depends solely on the geometry of t…
We study an initial boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of compressible viscous heat-conductive fluids in a 2-D periodic domain or the unit square domain. We establish a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the gradient of the velocity only, which coincides with the famous Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for ideal incompressible flows.
We consider a free boundary problem of the Navier--Stokes equations in the three-dimensional Euclidean space with moving contact line, where the 90$^\circ$-contact angle condition is posed. We show that for given $T > 0$ the problem is local well-posed on $(0, T)$ provided that the initial data are small. In contrast to the strategy in Wilke (2013), we study the transformed problem in an $L^p$-in-time and $L^q$-in-space setting, which yields the optimal regularity of the initial data.
We consider the Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms describing the stationary flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body moving at a constant velocity and rotating at a constant angular velocity. In a previous paper, we prove a representation formula for weak solutions of the system. Here the representation formula is used to get an asymptotic expansion of respectively velocity and its gradient, and to establish pointwise decay estimates of remainder terms. Our results are based on a fundamental solution proposed by Guenther and Thomann J. Math. Fluid Mech., 8 …
We study a diffuse interface model for the flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids in a bounded domain. The fluids are assumed to be macroscopically immiscible, but a partial mixing in a small interfacial region is assumed in the model. Moreover, diffusion of both components is taken into account. In contrast to previous works, we study a model for the general case that the fluids have different densities due to Lowengrub and Truskinovski. This leads to an inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system coupled to a Cahn-Hilliard system, where the density of the mixture depends on the concentra…
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
We consider an optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary conditions. We denote by $α$ the friction coefficient and we analyze the asymptotic behavior of such a problem as $α\to \infty$. More precisely, we prove that if we take an optimal control for each $α$, then there exists a sequence of optimal controls converging to an optimal control of the same optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with the Dirichlet boundary condition. We also show the convergence of the corresponding direct and adjoint states.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of particle rebound in a viscous incompressible fluid environment. We focus on the important case of no-slip boundary conditions, for which it is by now classical that, under certain assumptions, collisions cannot occur in finite time. Motivated by the desire to understand this fascinating yet counterintuitive fluid-structure interaction, we introduce a reduced model which we study both analytically and numerically. In this simplified framework, we provide conditions which allow to prove that rebound is possible even in the absence of a topological …
The purpose of this paper is to provide a large class of initial data which generates global smooth solution of the 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the whole space~$\R^3$. This class of data is based on functions which vary slowly in one direction. The idea is that 2-D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system with large data is globally well-posedness and we construct the 3-D approximate solutions by the 2-D solutions with a parameter. One of the key point of this study is the investigation of the time decay properties of the solutions to the 2-D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes …
We consider a viscous incompressible fluid below the air and above a fixed bottom. The fluid dynamics is governed by the gravity-driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the free surface. The global well-posedness and long-time behavior of solutions near equilibrium have been intriguing questions since Beale (\emph{Comm. Pure Appl. Math.} 34 (1981), no. 3, 359--392). It had been thought that certain low frequency assumption of the initial data is needed to derive an integrable decay rate of the velocity so that the global solutions in $3D…
We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid with Navierslip-with-friction conditions at the solid boundary. The fluid-solid system occupies the whole plane. We provethe small-time exact controllability of the position and velocity of the solid when the control takes the form of adistributed force supported in a compact subset (with nonvoid interior) of the fluid domain, away from the body. The strategy relies on the introduction of a small parameter: we consider fast and strong amplitude controls forwhich the ``Navier-Stokes+rigid body'' sys…
In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of viscous incompressible 2D flow in the exterior of a small material obstacle. We fix the initial vorticity $ω_0$ and the circulation $γ$ of the initial flow around the obstacle. We prove that, if $γ$ is sufficiently small, the limit flow satisfies the full-plane Navier-Stokes system, with initial vorticity $ω_0 + γδ$, where $δ$ is the standard Dirac measure. The result should be contrasted with the corresponding inviscid result obtained by the authors in [Comm P.D.E. 28 (2003) 349-379], where the effect of the small obstacle appears in the coeffi…
Using a simple and well-motivated modification of the stress-energy tensor for a viscous fluid proposed by Lichnerowicz, we prove that Einstein's equations coupled to a relativistic version of the Navier-Stokes equations are well-posed in a suitable Gevrey class if the fluid is incompressible and irrotational. These last two conditions are given an appropriate relativistic interpretation. The solutions enjoy the domain of dependence or finite propagation speed property. We also derive a full set of equations, describing a relativistic fluid that is not necessarily incompressible or irrotationa…
In this article we consider weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid flow equations with initial data admitting a one-dimensional symmetry group. We examine both the viscous and inviscid cases. For the case of viscous flows, we prove that Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations preserve initially imposed symmetry and that such symmetric flows are stable under general three-dimensional perturbations, globally in time. We work in three different contexts: two-and-a-half-dimensional, helical and axi-symmetric flows. In the inviscid case, we o…
