From the steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes models, a penalization method has been considered by several authors for approximating those fluid equations around obstacles. In this work, we present a justification for using fictitious domains to study obstacles immersed in incompressible viscous fluids through a simplified version of Brinkman's law for porous media. If the scalar function $ψ$ is considered as the inverse of permeability, it is possible to study the singularities of $ψ$ as approximations of obstacles (when $ψ$ tends to $\infty$) or of the domain corresponding to the fluid (when $ψ= 0$ or is very close to $0$). The strong convergence of the solution of the perturbed problem to the solution of the strong problem is studied, also considering error estimates that depend on the penalty parameter, both for fluids modeled with the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. A numerical experiment is presented that validates this result and allows to study the application of this perturbed problem simulation of flows and the identification of obstacles.
We consider the Stokes system in $\mathbb R^3,$ deprived of $N$ spheres of radius $1/N,$ completed by constant boundary conditions on the spheres. This problem models the instantaneous response of a viscous fluid to an immersed cloud of moving solid spheres. We assume that the centers of the spheres and the boundary conditions are given randomly and we compute the asymptotic behavior of solutions when the parameter $N$ diverges. Under the assumption that the distribution of spheres/centers is chaotic, we prove convergence in mean to the solution of a Stokes-Brinkman problem.
We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid with Navierslip-with-friction conditions at the solid boundary. The fluid-solid system occupies the whole plane. We provethe small-time exact controllability of the position and velocity of the solid when the control takes the form of adistributed force supported in a compact subset (with nonvoid interior) of the fluid domain, away from the body. The strategy relies on the introduction of a small parameter: we consider fast and strong amplitude controls forwhich the ``Navier-Stokes+rigid body'' sys…
The purpose of this paper is the mathematical analysis of the weak solution of the mixed Dirichlet-Robin boundary value problem for the nonlinear Darcy-Forchheimer- Brinkman system in a bounded, two-dimensional Lipschitz domain, and the application of the corresponding results to the study of the lid-driven flow problem of an incompressible viscous fluid located in a square cavity filled with a porous medium. First we obtain a well-posedness result for the linear Brinkman system with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, employing a variational approach for the corresponding boundary integral…

We propose a mathematical derivation of Brinkman's force for a cloud of particles immersed in an incompressible fluid. Our starting point is the Stokes or steady Navier-Stokes equations set in a bounded domain with the disjoint union of N balls of radius 1/N removed, and with a no-slip boundary condition for the fluid at the surface of each ball. The large N limit of the fluid velocity field is governed by the same (Navier-)Stokes equations in the whole domain, with an additional term (Brinkman's force) that is (minus) the total drag force exerted by the fluid on the particle system. This can …
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
We consider the motion of $N$ rigid bodies -- compact sets $(\mathcal{S}^1_\varepsilon, \cdots, \mathcal{S}^N_\varepsilon )_{\varepsilon > 0}$ -- immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a domain in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We show the fluid flow is not influenced by the presence of the infinitely many bodies in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and $N=N(\varepsilon)\rightarrow\infty$ as soon as \[ {\rm diam}[\mathcal{S}^i_\varepsilon ] \to 0 \ \mbox{as}\ \varepsilon \to 0 ,\ i=1,\cdots, N(\varepsilon). \] The result depends solely on the geometry of t…
We consider the motion of a small rigid object immersed in a viscous compressible fluid in the 3-dimensional Eucleidean space. Assuming the object is a ball of a small radius $\varepsilon$ we show that the behavior of the fluid is not influenced by the object in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. The result holds for the isentropic pressure law $p(\varrho) = a \varrho^γ$ for any $γ> \frac{3}{2}$ under mild assumptions concerning the rigid body density. In particular, the latter may be bounded as soon as $γ> 3$. The proof uses a new method of construction of the test functions in the wea…
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
We present a cut-cell method for the simulation of 2D incompressible flows past obstacles. It consists in using the MAC scheme on cartesian grids and imposing Dirchlet boundary conditions for the velocity field on the boundary of solid structures following the Shortley-Weller formulation. In order to ensure local conservation properties, viscous and convecting terms are discretized in a finite volume way. The scheme is second order implicit in time for the linear part, the linear systems are solved by the use of the capacitance matrix method for non-moving obstacles. Numerical results of flows…
In this paper we study a coupled system modeling the movement of a deformable solid immersed in a fluid. For the solid we consider a given deformation that has to obey several physical constraints. The motion of the fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a time-dependent bounded domain of $\R^3$, and the solid satisfies the Newton's laws. Our contribution consists in adapting and completing some results of ARMA 2008 in dimension 3, in a framework where the regularity of the deformation of the solid is limited. We rewrite the main system in domains which do not depend…
Radiant spherical suspensions have an $\veps$-periodic distribution in a tridimensional incompressible viscous fluid governed by the Stokes-Boussinesq system. We perform the homogenization procedure when the radius of the solid spheres is of order $\veps^3$ (the critical size of perforations for the Navier-Stokes system) and when the ratio of the fluid/solid conductivities is of order $\veps^6$, the order of the total volume of suspensions. Adapting the methods used in the study of small inclusions, we prove that the macroscopic behavior is described by a Brinkman-Boussinesq type law and two c…

We consider a stochastic perturbation of the phase field alpha-Navier-Stokes model with vesicle-fluid interaction. It consists in a system of nonlinear evolution partial differential equations modeling the fluid-structure interaction associated to the dynamics of an elastic vesicle immersed in a moving incompressible viscous fluid. This system of equations couples a phase-field equation -- for the interface between the fluid and the vesicle -- to the alpha-Navier-Stokes equation -- for the viscous fluid -- with an extra nonlinear interaction term, namely the bending energy. The stochastic pert…
