We prove sharp Strichartz estimates for the semi-classical Schrodinger equation on a compact manifold with smooth, strictly geodesically concave boundary. We deduce sharp (classical) Strichartz estimates for the Schrodinger equation outside a strictly convex obstacle, local existence for the H^1-critical (quintic) Schrodinger equation and scattering for the sub-critical Schrodinger equation in 3D.
We prove Strichartz estimates without loss for the Schrödinger equation and the wave equation outside finitely many strictly convex obstacles verifying Ikawa's condition, extending the approach we introduced previously for the two convex case.
We prove global Strichartz estimates without loss for the wave equation outside two strictly convex obstacles, following the roadmap introduced in [Lafontaine, 2017] for the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we show a first step toward the large data scattering for the critical non linear equation associated to this geometrical setting, and prove the scattering for a class of non trapping obstacles close to the two convex framework.
We consider the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth compact strictly convex obstacle in three dimensions. For the initial-value problem with Dirichlet boundary condition we prove global well-posedness and scattering for all initial data in the energy space.
We prove global Strichartz estimates without loss outside two strictly convex obstacles, combining arguments from M.Ikawa (1982,1988) with more recent ones inspired by N.Burq, C.Guillarmou, and A. Hassell (2010) and O. Ivanovici (2010). This is to be contrasted with the loss in the smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the presence of a trapped geodesic.
We consider the focusing wave equation outside a ball of $\R^3$, with Dirichlet boundary condition and a superquintic power nonlinearity. We classify all radial stationary solutions, and prove that all radial global solutions are asymptotically the sum of a stationary solution and a radiation term.
This paper concerns spectral clusters of the Neumann Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with strictly geodesically concave boundary. We prove an inequality which controls the $L^p$ norms of spectral clusters.
We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the co…
We prove the optimal $W^{2, \infty }$ regularity for fully nonlinear elliptic equations with convex gradient constraints. We do not assume any regularity about the constraints; so the constraints need not be $C^1$ or strictly convex. We also show that the optimal regularity holds up to the boundary. Our approach is to show that these elliptic equations with gradient constraints are related to some fully nonlinear double obstacle problems. Then we prove the optimal $W^{2, \infty }$ regularity for the double obstacle problems. In this process, we also employ the monotonicity property for the sec…
In this article, we consider the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation(NLS) in the exterior domain outside of a convex obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We revisit the scattering result below ground state of Killip-Visan-Zhang by utilizing Dodson and Murphy's argument and the dispersive estimate established by Ivanovici and Lebeau, which avoids using the concentration compactness. We conquer the difficulty of the boundary in the focusing case by establishing a local smoothing effect of the boundary. Based on this effect and the interaction Morawetz estimate…
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth, compact, strictly convex obstacle. We construct a solution behaving asymptotically as a solitary waves on $R^3$, as large time. When the velocity of the solitary wave is high, the existence of such a solution can be proved by a classical fixed point argument. To construct solutions with arbitrary nonzero velocity, we use a compactness argument similar to the one that was introduced by F.Merle in 1990 to construct solution of NLS blowing up at several blow-up point together with a topological argument…
In this paper, we consider exterior problem of the critical semilinear wave equation in three space dimensions with variable coefficients and prove global existence of smooth solutions. Similar to the constant coefficients case, we show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point $(t,x)\in(0,\infty)\timesΩ$. For that purpose, following Ibrahim and Majdoub \cite{Ibrahim}, we use a geometric multiplier close to the well-known Morawetz multiplier used in the constant coefficients case. Then we use comparison theorem from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichar…
The purpose of the present paper is to establish appropriate cut-off resolvent estimates for the Dirichlet Laplacian on exterior domains. The geometrical assumptions on domains are rather general, for example, non-trapping condition is not imposed. The first key assumption guarantees the result on propagation of singularities, the second is the smallness of the Lebesgue measure of the portions of the trapped sets in the fibers of cosphere bundle, and the third concerns the upper bound of the sojourn time. As a by-product of these estimates, the local energy decay estimate for solutions to the …
We study the dynamics of the focusing $3d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a strictly convex obstacle at the mass-energy threshold, namely, when $ E_Ω[u_0] M_Ω[u_0] = E_{\R^3}[Q] M_{\R^3}[Q] $ and $ \left\| \nabla u_0 \right\|_{L^{2}(Ω)} \left\|u_0\right\|_{L^{2}(Ω)}< \left\| \nabla Q \right\|_{L^2(\R^3)} \left\| Q \right\|_{L^2(\R^3)} ,$ where $u_0 \in H^1_0(Ω)$ is the initial data, $Q$ is the ground state on the Euclidean space, $E$ is the energy and $M$ is the mass. In the whole Euclidean space Duyckaerts and Roudenko (following the work of Duyckaerts and Merle on th…
We prove the existence of a resonance free region in scattering by a strictly convex obstacle with the Robin boundary condition. More precisely, we show that the scattering resonances lie below a cubic curve which is the same as in the case of the Neumann boundary condition. This generalizes earlier results on cubic poles free regions obtained for the Dirichlet boundary condition.
We prove global existence for semilinear hyperbolic equations that satisfy the null condition of Christodoulou and Klainerman in the exterior of convex domains. We use a combination of the conformal method of Christodoulou and the direct method of Klainerman.
To study the location of poles for the acoustic scattering matrix for two strictly convex obstacles with smooth boundaries, one uses an approximation of the quantized billiard operator $M$ along the trapped ray between the two obstacles. Using this method Ikawa and G{é}rard established the existence of parallel rows of poles in a strip $Im z\leq c$ as $Re z$ tends to infinity. Assuming that the boundaries are analytic and the eigenvalues of Poincar{é} map are non-resonant we use the Birkhoff normal form for $M$ to improve this result and to get the complete asymptotic expansions for the poles …
We establish global existence in 3+1 dimensions of small-amplitude solutions of quasilinear Dirichlet-wave equations satisfying the null condition outside of star-shapped obstacles.
The goal of this paper is to develop some basic harmonic analysis tools for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the exterior domain associated to a smooth convex obstacle in dimensions $d\geq 3$. Specifically, we will discuss analogues of the Mikhlin Multiplier Theorem, Littlewood-Paley Theory, and Hardy inequalities, culminating in a proof that homogeneous Sobolev norms defined with respect to the Dirichlet and whole-space Laplacians are equivalent for the sharp ranges of integrability exponent $p$ and regularity $s$. Counterexamples are included to show that these results are indeed sharp. In particu…
A simple method for some class of inverse obstacle scattering problems is introduced. The observation data are given by a wave field measured on a known surface surrounding unknown obstacles over a finite time interval. The wave is generated by an initial data with compact support outside the surface. The method yields the distance from a given point outside the surface to obstacles and thus more than the convex hull.
We prove non-uniqueness for a class of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations which have bounded kinetic energy, integrable vorticity, and are smooth outside a fractal set of singular times with Hausdorff dimension strictly less than 1.
We prove global existence for quasilinear wave equations outside of a wide class of obstacles. The obstacles may contain trapped hyperbolic rays as long as there is local exponential energy decay for the associated linear wave equation. Thus, we can handle all non-trapping obstacles. We are also able to handle non-diagonal systems satisfying the appropriate null condition.
We prove the absence of non-scattering energies for potentials in the plane having a corner of angle smaller than $π$. This extends the earlier result of Blåsten, Päivärinta and Sylvester who considered rectangular corners. In three dimensions, we prove a similar result for any potential with a circular conic corner whose opening angle is outside a countable subset of $(0,π)$.
We study the distribution of resonances for smooth strictly convex obstacles under general boundary conditions. We show that under a pinched curvature condition for the boundary of the obstacle, the resonances are separated into cubic bands and the distribution in each bands satisfies Weyl's law.
We prove the scattering for a defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a sum of two repulsive potentials with strictly convex level surfaces, thus providing a scattering result in a trapped setting similar to the exterior of two strictly convex obstacles.
Consider the mixed problem with Dirichelet condition associated to the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\Div_{x}(a(t,x)\nabla_{x}u)=0$, where the scalar metric $a(t,x)$ is $T$-periodic in $t$ and uniformly equal to 1 outside a compact set in $x$, on a $T$-periodic domain. Let $\mathcal U(t, 0)$ be the associated propagator. Assuming that the perturbations are non-trapping, we prove the meromorphic continuation of the cut-off resolvent of the Floquet operator $\mathcal U(T, 0)$ and establish sufficient conditions for local energy decay.
In this paper, we consider the Schrödinger equation with a mass-supercritical focusing nonlinearity, in the exterior of a smooth, compact, convex obstacle of $\R^{d}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that solutions with negative energy blow up in finite time. Assuming furthermore that the nonlinearity is energy-subcritical, we also prove (under additional symmetry conditions) blow-up with the same optimal ground-state criterion than in the work of Holmer and Roudenko on $\R^{d}$. The classical proof of Glassey, based on the concavity of the variance, fails in the exterior of an obs…
We consider time-harmonic wave scattering from an inhomogeneous isotropic medium supported in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\geq 2$). {In a subregion $D\SubsetΩ$, the medium is supposed to be lossy and have a large mass density. We study the asymptotic development of the wave field as the mass density $ρ\rightarrow +\infty$} and show that the wave field inside $D$ will decay exponentially while the wave filed outside the medium will converge to the one corresponding to a sound-hard obstacle $D\SubsetΩ$ buried in the medium supported in $Ω\backslash\bar{D}$. Moreover, the normal ve…
Now a final and maybe simplest formulation of the enclosure method applied to inverse obstacle problems governed by partial differential equations in a {\it spacial domain with an outer boundary} over a finite time interval is fixed. The method employs only a single pair of a quite natural Neumann data prescribed on the outer boundary and the corresponding Dirichlet data on the same boundary of the solution of the governing equation over a finite time interval, that is a single point on the graph of the so-called {\it response operator}. It is shown that the methods enables us to extract the d…
We consider the broken ray transform on Riemann surfaces in the presence of an obstacle, following earlier work of Mukhometov. If the surface has nonpositive curvature and the obstacle is strictly convex, we show that a function is determined by its integrals over broken geodesic rays that reflect on the boundary of the obstacle. Our proof is based on a Pestov identity with boundary terms, and it involves Jacobi fields on broken rays. We also discuss applications of the broken ray transform.
We give a factorization procedure for a strictly hyperbolic partial differential operator of second order with logarithmic slow scale coefficients. From this we can microlocally diagonalize the full wave operator which results in a coupled system of two first-order pseudodifferential equations in a microlocal sense. Under the assumption that the full wave equation is microlocal regular in a fixed domain of the phase space, we can approximate the problem by two one-way wave equations where a dissipative term is added to suppress singularities outside the given domain. We obtain well-posedness o…
This paper concerns a space-time homogenization limit of nonnegative weak solutions to porous medium equations. In particular, the so-called homogenized matrix will be characterized in terms of solutions to cell problems, which drastically vary in a scaling parameter $r > 0$. A similar problem has already been studied in [1], where the growth of the power nonlinearity is strictly restricted due to some substantial obstacles. In the present paper, such obstacles will be overcome by developing local uniform estimates for the gradients of nonnegative weak solutions.
An inverse problem for the wave equation outside an obstacle with a {\it dissipative boundary condition} is considered. The observed data are given by a single solution of the wave equation generated by an initial data supported on an open ball. An explicit analytical formula for the computation of the coefficient at a point on the surface of the obstacle which is nearest to the center of the support of the initial data is given.
In this paper, an inverse initial-boundary value problem for the heat equation in three dimensions is studied. Assume that a three-dimensional heat conductive body contains several cavities of strictly convex. In the outside boundary of this body, a single pair of the temperature and heat flux is given as an observation datum for the inverse problem. It is found the minimum length of broken paths connecting arbitrary fixed point in the outside, a point on the boundary of the cavities and a point on the outside boundary in this order, if the minimum path is not line segment.
In this article we shall go over recent work in proving dispersive and Strichartz estimates for the Dirichlet-wave equation. We shall discuss applications to existence questions outside of obstacles and discuss open problems.
This paper is concerned with resolvent estimates on the real axis for the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a bounded obstacle with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the obstacle is trapping. There are two resolvent estimates for this situation currently in the literature: (i) in the case of elliptic trapping the general "worst case" bound of exponential growth applies, and examples show that this growth can be realised through some sequence of wavenumbers, (ii) in the prototypical case of hyperbolic trapping where the Helmholtz equation is posed in the exterior of two strictly conv…
The paper is devoted to a comprehensive study of smoothness of inertial manifolds for abstract semilinear parabolic problems. It is well known that in general we cannot expect more than $C^{1,\varepsilon}$-regularity for such manifolds (for some positive, but small $\varepsilon$). Nevertheless, as shown in the paper, under the natural assumptions, the obstacles to the existence of a $C^n$-smooth inertial manifold (where $n\in\mathbb N$ is any given number) can be removed by increasing the dimension and by modifying properly the nonlinearity outside of the global attractor (or even outside the …
The authors show that bilinear estimates for null forms hold for Dirichlet-wave equations outside of convex obstacle. This generalizes results for the Euclidean case of Klainerman and Machedon, and of Sogge for the variable coefficient boundaryless case. The estimates are used to prove a local existence theorem for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition.
We study the asymptotic behavior of Lipschitz continuous solutions of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations in the periodic setting. Our results apply to a large class of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. Defining S as the set where the diffusion vanishes, i.e., where the equation is totally degenerate, we obtain the convergence when the equation is uniformly parabolic outside S and, on S, the Hamiltonian is either strictly convex or satisfies an assumption similar of the one introduced by Barles-Souganidis (2000) for first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This latter assumption allows to …
In this paper, we are interested in the problem of scattering by strictly convex obstacles in the plane. We provide an upper bound for the number $N(r,γ)$ of resonances in the box $\{r \le \Re(λ) \le r + 1$; $\Im(λ) \ge - γ\}$. It was proved in a work of S. Nonnenmacher, J. Sj{ö}strand and M. Zworski (2014) that $N (r,γ) = O_γ(r^{d_H})$ where $2d_H + 1$ is the Hausdorff dimension of the trapped set of the billiard flow. In this article, we provide an improved upper bound in the band $0 \le γ< γ_{cl} /2$, where $γ_{cl}$ is the classical decay rate of the flow. This improved Weyl upper bound is …
We present a numerical study of solutions to the $2d$ cubic and quintic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth, compact and strictly convex obstacle (a disk) with Dirichlet boundary condition. We first investigate the effect of the obstacle on the behavior of solutions traveling toward the obstacle at different angles and with different velocities directions. We introduce a new concept of weak and strong interactions of the solutions with the obstacle. Next, we study the existence of blow-up solutions depending on the type of the interaction and show how the presen…
We prove homogenization for a class of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations in the stationary and ergodic setting in one space dimension. Our assumptions include most notably the following: the Hamiltonian is of the form $G(p) + βV(x,ω)$, the function $G$ is coercive and strictly quasiconvex, $\min G = 0$, $β>0$, the random potential $V$ takes values in $[0,1]$ with full support and it satisfies a hill condition that involves the diffusion coefficient. Our approach is based on showing that, for every direction outside of a bounded interval $(θ_1(β),θ_2(β))$, there is a unique sublinear corrector …
