We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the corresponding Cauchy problem.
This article focuses on long-time existence for quasilinear wave equations with small initial data in exterior domains. The nonlinearity is permitted to fully depend on the solution at the quadratic level, rather than just the first and second derivatives of the solution. The corresponding lifespan bound in the boundaryless case is due to Lindblad, and Du and Zhou first proved such long-time existence exterior to star-shaped obstacles. Here we relax the hypothesis on the geometry and only require that there is a sufficiently rapid decay of local energy for the linear homogeneous wave equation,…
We establish global existence in 3+1 dimensions of small-amplitude solutions of quasilinear Dirichlet-wave equations satisfying the null condition outside of star-shapped obstacles.
We study long time existence for high dimensional quasilinear wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles. In particular, we obtain exterior domain analogs of the four dimensional results of Hörmander where the nonlinearity is permitted to depend on the solution not just its first and second derivatives. Previous proofs in exterior domains omitted this dependence as it did not mesh well with the energy methods in use.
For the quasilinear wave equation \partial_t^2u - Δu = u_t u_{tt}, we analyze the long-time behavior of classical solutions with small (not rotationally invariant) data. We give a complete asymptotic expansion of the lifespan and describe the solution close to the blowup point. It turns out that this solution is a ``blowup solution of cusp type,'' according to the terminology of the author.
In the paper, for the 3D quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation with the small initial data posed on the product space $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times \mathbb{T}$, we focus on the lower bound of the lifespan of the smooth solution. When the size of initial data is bounded by $\varepsilon_0>0$, by the space-time resonance method, it is shown that smooth solution exists up to the time $e^{c_{0}/\varepsilon_{0}^2}$ with $\varepsilon_0$ being sufficiently small and $c_0>0$ being some suitable constant.
We consider the Cauchy problem of systems of quasilinear wave equations in 2-dimensional space. We assume that the propagation speeds are distinct and that the nonlinearities contain quadratic and cubic terms of the first and second order derivatives of the solution. We know that if the all quadratic and cubic terms of nonlinearities satisfy $Strong$ $Null$-$condition$, then there exists a global solution for sufficiently small initial data. In this paper, we study about the lifespan of the smooth solution, when the cubic terms in the quasi-linear nonlinearities do not satisfy the Strong null-…
For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold an…
We prove an extended lifespan result for the full gravity-capillary water waves system with a $2$ dimensional periodic interface: for initial data of sufficiently small size $\varepsilon$, smooth solutions exist up to times of the order of $\varepsilon^{-5/3+}$, for almost all values of the gravity and surface tension parameters. Besides the quasilinear nature of the equations, the main difficulty is to handle the weak small divisors bounds for quadratic and cubic interactions, growing with the size of the largest frequency. To overcome this difficulty we use (1) the (Hamiltonian) structure of…
This article focuses on almost global existence for quasilinear wave equations with small initial data in 4-dimensional exterior domains. The nonlinearity is allowed to depend on the solution at the quadratic level as well as its first and second derivatives. For this problem in the boundaryless setting, Hörmander proved that the lifespan is bounded below by $\exp(c/ε)$ where $ε>0$ denotes the size of the Cauchy data. Later Du, the second author, Sogge, and Zhou showed that this inequality also holds for star-shaped obstacles. Following up on the authors' work in the 3-dimensional case, we wea…
We consider the Kirchhoff equation $$ \partial_{tt} u - Δu \Big( 1 + \int_{\mathbb T^d} |\nabla u|^2 \Big) = 0 $$ on the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^d$, and its Cauchy problem with initial data $u(0,x)$, $\partial_t u(0,x)$ of size $\varepsilon$ in Sobolev class. The effective equation for the dynamics at the quintic order, obtained in previous papers by quasilinear normal form, contains resonances corresponding to nontrivial terms in the energy estimates. Such resonances cannot be avoided by tuning external parameters (simply because the Kirchhoff equation does not contain parameters). I…
We explore the global existence of solutions to systems of quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition when the initial data are sufficiently small. We adapt an approach of Keel, Smith, and Sogge, which relies on integrated local energy estimates and a weighted Sobolev estimate that yields decay in $|x|$, by using the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimates of Dafermos and Rodnianski. One advantage of this approach is that all time-dependent vector fields can be avoided and the proof can be readily adapted to address wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles.
We investigate an initial-boundary value problem for a quasilinear nonhomogeneous, anisotropic Maxwell system subject to an absorbing boundary condition of Silver & Müller type in a smooth, bounded, strictly star-shaped domain of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Imposing usual smallness assumptions in addition to standard regularity and compatibility conditions, a nonlinear stabilizability inequality is obtained by showing nonlinear dissipativity and observability-like estimates enhanced by an intricate regularity analysis. With the stabilizability inequality at hand, the classic nonlinear barrier method is …
Hörmander proved global existence of solutions for sufficiently small initial data for scalar wave equations in $(1+4)-$dimensions of the form $\Box u = Q(u, u', u'')$ where $Q$ vanishes to second order and $(\partial_u^2 Q)(0,0,0)=0$. Without the latter condition, only almost global existence may be guaranteed. The first author and Sogge considered the analog exterior to a star-shaped obstacle. Both results relied on writing the lowest order terms $u\partial_αu = \frac{1}{2}\partial_αu^2$ and as such do not immediately generalize to systems. The current study remedies such and extends both re…
This paper is concerned with the small smooth data problem for the 3-D nonlinear wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+u+\p_t u\right)Δu=0$. This equation is prototypical of the more general equation $\dsize\sum_{i,j=0}^3g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$, where $x_0=t$ and $g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)=c_{ij}+d_{ij}u+\dsize\sum_{k=0}^3e_{ij}^k\partial_ku+O(|u|^2+|\nabla u|^2)$ are smooth functions of their arguments, with $c_{ij}, d_{ij}$ and $e_{ij}^k$ being constants, and $d_{ij}\neq0$ for some $(i,j)$; moreover, $\dsize\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e_{ij}^k(\partial_ku)\p_{ij} u$ does not fulfill the null cond…
We prove almost global existence for multiple speed quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in three spatial dimensions. We prove new results both for Minkowski space and also for nonlinear Dirichlet-wave equations outside of star shaped obstacles. The results for Minkowski space generalize a classical theorem of John and Klainerman. Our techniques only uses the classical invariance of the wave operator under translations, spatial rotations, and scaling. We exploit the $O(|x|^{-1})$ decay of solutions of the wave equation as opposed to the more difficult $O(|t|^{-1})$ decay. A…
In this paper, we are concerned with the long time behavior of the piecewise smooth solutions to the generalized Riemann problem governed by the compressible isothermal Euler equations in two and three dimensions. Non-existence result is established for the fan-shaped wave structure solution, including two shocks and one contact discontinuity and which is a perturbation of plane waves. Therefore, unlike the one-dimensional case, the multi-dimensional plane shocks are not stable globally. What is more, the sharp lifespan estimate is established which is the same as the lifespan estimate for the…
We solve Cauchy problems for some $μ$-Camassa-Holm integro-partial differential equations in the analytic category. The equations to be considered are $μ$CH of Khesin-Lenells-Misiołek, $μ$DP of Lenells-Misiołek-Tiğlay, the higher-order $μ$CH of Wang-Li-Qiao and the non-quasilinear version of Qu-Fu-Liu. We prove the unique local solvability of the Cauchy problems and provide an estimate of the lifespan of the solutions. Moreover, we show the existence of a unique global-in-time analytic solution for $μ$CH, $μ$DP and the higher-order $μ$CH. The present work is the first result of such a global n…
In this note, we propose several unsolved problems concerning the irrotational oscillation of a water droplet under zero gravity. We will derive the governing equation of this physical model, and convert it to a quasilinear dispersive partial differential equation defined on the sphere, which formally resembles the capillary water waves equation but describes oscillation defined on curved manifold instead. Three types of unsolved mathematical problems related to this model will be discussed in observation of hydrodynamical experiments under zero gravity: (1) Strichartz type inequalities for th…
We study quasilinear degenerate singular elliptic equation of type -Delta_p u = \frac{u^{p^*(s)-1}}{|y|^t}$ in a smooth bounded domain Ωin R^n=R^k \times R^{N-k}$, x=(y,z) in R^k \times R^{N-k}, 2 \leq k<N and N \geq 3, 1<p<2, 0\leq s\leq p, 0\leq t\leq s, p^*(s)=\frac{p(n-s)}{n-p}. We study existence of solution for t<s, non-existence in a star-shaped domain for t=s and s<k(\frac{p-1}{p}). We also show that solution is in C^{1,\al}(Ω) for some 0<\al<1 provided t<\frac{k}{N}(\frac{p-1}{p}). The regularity of solution can be improved to the class W^{2,p}(Ω) when t<k(\frac{p-1}{p}). We also stud…
