In this paper, we use the modified energy method of Hunter, Ifrim, Tataru, and Wongto prove an improved quintic energy estimate for initial data small in $\dot H^1_x \times L^2_x$ for a wide class of quasilinear wave equations of Kirchhoff type. This allows us to make the first steps towards small data $H^{5/4}_x \times H^{1/4}_x$ local well-posedness. In particular, we prove an enhanced lifespan for corresponding solutions depending only on the $\dot H^{5/4}_x \times \dot H^{1/4}_x$ norm of the initial data as well as the existence of weak solutions for $H^{5/4}_x \times H^{1/4}_x$ initial data, again small in $\dot H^1_x \times L^2_x$. In contrast to previous modified energy results, the nonlinearity in these models depends on an $\dot H^1_x$ norm of the solution. This means a modified energy cannot be deduced algebraically by analyzing resonant interactions between wave packets since all spatial dependence is integrated out in the nonlinearity. Instead, the modified energy is determined as a Taylor series of incremental leading order terms.
In this paper we establish an existence result for a quasilinear Kirchhoff equation via a sub and supersolution approach, by using the pseudomonotone operators theory.
We consider an initial-boundary-value problem for a thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate, thermally insulated and simply supported on the boundary, incorporating rotational inertia and a quasilinear hypoelastic response, while the heat effects are modeled using the hyperbolic Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte law giving rise to a 'second sound' effect. We study the local well-posedness of the resulting quasilinear mixed-order hyperbolic system in a suitable solution class of smooth functions mapping into Sobolev $H^{k}$-spaces. Exploiting the sole source of energy dissipation entering the system throu…
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for a quasilinear thermoelastic plate of Kirchhoff \& Love-type with parabolic heat conduction due to Fourier, mechanically simply supported and held at the reference temperature on the boundary. For this problem, we show the short-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under appropriate regularity and compatibility assumptions on the data. Further, we use barrier techniques to prove the global existence and exponential stability of solutions under a smallness condition on the initial data. It is the first result of this kind established…
In this paper we study the geometry of certain functionals associated to quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems with a degenerate nonlocal term of Kirchhoff type. Due to the degeneration of the nonlocal term it is not possible to directly use classical results such as uniform a-priori estimates and "Sobolev versus Hölder local minimizers" type of results. We prove that results similar to these hold true or not, depending on how degenerate the problem is. We apply our findings in order to show existence and multiplicity of solutions for the associated quasilinear equations, considering se…
In this paper, we consider a class of quasilinear stationary Kirchhoff type potential systems in unbounded domains, which involves a general variable exponent elliptic operator. Under some suitable conditions on the nonlinearities, we establish existence of at least three weak solutions for the problem. The proof of our main result uses variational methods and the critical theorem of Bonanno and Marano.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Kirchhoff equation on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with initial data of small amplitude $\varepsilon$ in Sobolev class. We prove a lower bound $\varepsilon^{-4}$ for the existence time, which improves the bound $\varepsilon^{-2}$ given by the standard local theory. The proof relies on a normal form transformation, preceded by a nonlinear transformation that diagonalizes the operator at the highest order, which is needed because of the quasilinear nature of the equation.
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a degenerate quasilinear Kirchhoff equation with weak dissipation. This means that the coefficient of the dissipative term tends to zero when t tends to +infinity. We prove that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution for suitable values of the parameters. We also prove that the solution decays to zero, as t tends to +infinity, with the same rate of the solution of the limit problem of parabolic type.
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a nondegenerate quasilinear equation of Kirchhoff type with weak dissipation. This means that the dissipative term is multiplied by a coefficient b(t) which tends to 0 as t tends to +infinity. The case where b(t) behaves like (1+t)^{-p} with p<1 has recently been considered. The result is that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution, and the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the parabolic problem converges to zero both as t tends to +infinity and as epsilon…
Consider the Kirchhoff equation $$ \partial_{tt} u - Δu \Big( 1 + \int_{\mathbb{T}^d} |\nabla u|^2 \Big) = 0 $$ on the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In a previous paper we proved that, after a first step of quasilinear normal form, the resonant cubic terms show an integrable behavior, namely they give no contribution to the energy estimates. This leads to the question whether the same structure also emerges at the next steps of normal form. In this paper, we perform the second step and give a negative answer to the previous question: the quintic resonant terms give a nonzero contributi…
We prove the existence of the modified wave operators for a scalar quasilinear wave equation satisfying the weak null condition. This is accomplished in three steps. First, we derive a new reduced asymptotic system for the quasilinear wave equation by modifying Hörmander's method. Next, we construct an approximate solution, by solving our new reduced system given some scattering data at infinite time. Finally, we prove that the quasilinear wave equation has a global solution which agrees with the approximate solution at infinite time.
In this paper, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic $m(x)$-polyharmonic Kirchhoff equations where the nonlinear function has a quasicritical growth at infinity and without assuming the Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz type condition. The new aspect consists in employing the notion of a Schauder basis to verify the geometry of the symmetric mountain pass theorem. Furthermore, for the case $m(x)\equiv Const$, we introduce a positive quantity $λ_M$ similar to the first eigenvalue of the $m$-polyharmonic operator to find a mountain pass solution, and als…
In this paper, we are concerned with the Neumann problem for a class of quasilinear stationary Kirchhoff-type potential systems, which involves general variable exponents elliptic operators with critical growth and real positive parameter. We show that the problem has at least one solution, which converges to zero in the norm of the space as the real positive parameter tends to infinity, via combining the truncation technique, variational method, and the concentration-compactness principle for variable exponent under suitable assumptions on the nonlinearities.
In this paper, we consider a class of quasilinear stationary Kirchhoff type potential systems with Neumann Boundary conditions, which involves a general variable exponent elliptic operator with critical growth. Under some suitable conditions on the nonlinearities, we establish existence and multiplicity of solutions for the problem by using the concentration-compactness principle of Lions for variable exponents found in [5, 7] and the Mountain Pass Theorem without the Palais-Smale condition given in [43].
We consider the Kirchhoff equation $$ \partial_{tt} u - Δu \Big( 1 + \int_{\mathbb T^d} |\nabla u|^2 \Big) = 0 $$ on the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^d$, and its Cauchy problem with initial data $u(0,x)$, $\partial_t u(0,x)$ of size $\varepsilon$ in Sobolev class. The effective equation for the dynamics at the quintic order, obtained in previous papers by quasilinear normal form, contains resonances corresponding to nontrivial terms in the energy estimates. Such resonances cannot be avoided by tuning external parameters (simply because the Kirchhoff equation does not contain parameters). I…
We study well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a class of quasilinear wave equations with a strong damping. We accept the Kirchhoff hypotheses and assume that the stiffness and damping coefficients are $C^1$ functions of the $L_2$-norm of the gradient of the displacement. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their properties for a rather wide class of nonlinearities which covers the case of possible degeneration (or even negativity) of the stiffness coefficient and the case of a supercritical source term. Our main results deal with global attractors. In th…
In this paper we establish a new existence result for the quasilinear elliptic problem \[ -{\rm div}(A(x,u)|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) +\frac1p A_t(x,u)|\nabla u|^p + V(x)|u|^{p-2} u = g(x,u)\quad\mbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^N, \] with $N\ge 2$, $p>1$ and $V:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}$ suitable measurable positive function, which generalizes the modified Schrödinger equation. Here, we suppose that $A:\mathbb{R}^N\times\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a $\mathcal{C}^{1}$-Carathéodory function such that $A_t(x,t) = \frac{\partial A}{\partial t} (x,t)$ and a given Carathéodory function $g:\mathbb{R}^N\…
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the star graph with the Kirchhoff boundary condition. We prove modified scattering for the final state problem and the initial value problem. Moreover, we also consider the failure of scattering for the Schrödinger equation with power-type long-range nonlinearities. These results are extension of the results for NLS on the one dimensional Euclidean space.
We investigate the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for a nonlinear Kirchhoff type quasilinear elliptic system on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$. We assume that the nonlinear term satisfies the locally super-$(m_1,m_2)$ condition, that is, $\lim_{|(u,v)|\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{F(x,u,v)}{|u|^{m_1}+|v|^{m_2}}=+\infty \mbox{ for a.e. } x \in G$ where $G$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which is weaker than the well-known Ambrosseti-Rabinowitz condition and the naturally global restriction, $\lim_{|(u,v)|\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{F(x,u,v)}{|u|^{m_1}+|v|^{m_2}}=+\infty \mbox{ for a.e. } …
We explore local existence and properties of classical weak solutions to the initial-boundary value problem of a one-dimensional quasilinear equation of elastodynamics with non-convex stored-energy function, a model of phase transitions in elastic bars proposed by Ericksen [19]. The instantaneous formation of microstructures of local weak solutions is observed for all smooth initial data with initial strain having its range overlapping with the phase transition zone of the Piola-Kirchhoff stress. As byproducts, it is shown that such a problem admits a local weak solution for all smooth initial…
In this paper we will apply the modified potential well method and variational method to the study of the long time behaviors of solutions to a class of parabolic equation of Kirchhoff type. Global existence and blow up in finite time of solutions will be obtained for arbitrary initial energy. To be a little more precise, we will give a threshold result for the solutions to exist globally or to blow up in finite time when the initial energy is subcritical and critical, respectively. The decay rate of the $L^2(Ω)$ norm is also obtained for global solutions in these cases. Moreover, some suffici…
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the existence of positive solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the (p-q)-Laplacian operator. We consider a nonlinearity that can be subcritical at infinity and supercritical at the origin; we also consider potential functions that can vanish at infinity. The approach is based on variational arguments dealing with the mountain-pass lemma and an adaptation of the penalization method. In order to overcome the lack of compactness we modify the original problem and the associated energy functional. Finally, to show that the …

In the present contribution, a feedback control law is studied for a quasilinear parabolic equation. First, we prove the well-posedness and some regularity results for the Cauchy-Neumann problem for this equation, modified by adding an extra term which is a multiple of the subdifferential of the distance function from a closed convex set of the space of square-integrable functions. Then, we consider convex sets of obstacle or double-obstacle type and prove rigorously the following property: if the factor in front of the feedback control is sufficiently large, then the solution reaches the conv…
This paper concerns the existence of positive ground state solutions for generalized quasilinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with critical growth which arise from plasma physics, as well as high-power ultrashort laser in matter. By applying a variable replacement, the quasilinear problem reduces to a semilinear problem which the associated functional is well defined in the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. We use the method of Nehari manifold for the modified equation, establish the minimax characterization, then obtain each Palais-Smale sequence of the associated energy functiona…
This article represents a first step towards understanding the well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation. This problem arises in the study of nematic liquid crystals, and although the equation has formal similarities with the KdV equation, the lack of $L^2$ control gives it a quasilinear character, with only continuous dependence on initial data. Here, we prove the local and global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem using a normal form approach to construct modified energies, and frequency envelopes in order to prove the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data.
In this paper we prove a global regularity result for a quadratic quasilinear model associated to the water waves system with surface tension and no gravity in dimension two (the capillary waves system). The model we consider here retains most of the difficulties of the full capillary water waves system, including the delicate time-resonance structure and modified scattering. It is slightly simpler, however, at the technical level and our goal here is to present our method in this simplified situation. The full system is the subject of a forthcoming paper.

In this paper we prove the boundedness and Hölder continuity of quasilinear elliptic problems involving variable exponents for a homogeneous Dirichlet and a nonhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition, respectively. The novelty of our work is the fact that we allow critical growth even on the boundary and so we close the gap in the papers of Fan-Zhao [Nonlinear Anal. 36 (1999), no. 3, 295--318.] and Winkert-Zacher [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. S 5 (2012), no. 4, 865--878.] in which the critical cases are excluded. Our approach is based on a modified version of De Giorgi's iteration technique…
We study the gradient-flow structure of a non-Newtonian thin film equation with power-law rheology. The equation is quasilinear, of fourth order and doubly-degenerate parabolic. By adding a singular potential to the natural Dirichlet energy, we introduce a modified version of the thin-film equation. Then, we set up a minimising-movement scheme that converges to global positive weak solutions to the modified problem. These solutions satisfy an energy-dissipation equality and follow a gradient flow. In the limit of a vanishing singularity of the potential, we obtain global non-negative weak solu…
