For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold and a suitable nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is satisfied, we show that smooth small data solutions blow up in finite time. Furthermore, we derive an explicit expression for the lifespan and establish the blowup mechanism.
We prove that, unlike in several space dimensions, there is no critical (nonlinear) diffusion coefficient for which solutions to the one dimensional quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation with small mass exist globally while finite time blowup could occur for solutions with large mass.
For the quasilinear wave equation \partial_t^2u - Δu = u_t u_{tt}, we analyze the long-time behavior of classical solutions with small (not rotationally invariant) data. We give a complete asymptotic expansion of the lifespan and describe the solution close to the blowup point. It turns out that this solution is a ``blowup solution of cusp type,'' according to the terminology of the author.
In this paper we prove finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic two-dimensional Keller-Segel system for any positive mass. This is done in case of nonlinear diffusion and also in the case of nonlinear cross-diffusion provided the nonlinear chemosensitivity term is assumed not to decay. Moreover, it is shown that the above-mentioned lack of non-decay assumption is essential with respect to keeping the dichotomy finite-time blowup against boundedness of solutions. Namely, we prove that without the non-decay assumption possible asymptotic behaviour…
We prove a constructive stable ODE-type blowup result for open sets of solutions to a family of quasilinear wave equations in three spatial dimensions featuring a Riccati-type derivative-quadratic semilinear term. The singularity is more severe than a shock in that the solution itself blows up like the log of the distance to the blowup-time. We assume that the quasilinear terms satisfy certain structural assumptions, which in particular ensure that the "elliptic part" of the wave operator vanishes precisely at the singular points. The initial data are compactly supported and can be small or la…

For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the…
In this paper we consider quasilinear Keller-Segel type systems of two kinds in higher dimensions. In the case of a nonlinear diffusion system we prove an optimal (with respect to possible nonlinear diffusions generating explosion in finite time of solutions) finite-time blowup result. In the case of a cross-diffusion system we give results which are optimal provided one assumes some proper non-decay of a nonlinear chemical sensitivity. Moreover, we show that once we do not assume the above mentioned non-decay, our result cannot be as strong as in the case of nonlinear diffusion without nonlin…
In three spatial dimensions, we study the Cauchy problem for the model wave equation $- \partial_t^2 Ψ+ (1 + Ψ)^P ΔΨ= 0$ for $P \in \lbrace 1,2 \rbrace$. We exhibit a stable form of finite-time Tricomi-type degeneracy formation that has not previously been studied for quasilinear wave equations. Specifically, using only energy methods and ODE-type techniques, we exhibit an open (in an appropriate Sobolev topology) set of data such that $Ψ$ is initially near $0$ while $1 + Ψ$ vanishes in finite time. In fact, generic data profiles, when appropriately rescaled, lead to the vanishing of $1 + Ψ$ i…
We construct examples of finite time singularity from smooth data for linear uniformly parabolic systems in the plane. We obtain similar examples for quasilinear systems with coefficients that depend only on the solution.
This paper is concerned with the small smooth data problem for the 3-D nonlinear wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+u+\p_t u\right)Δu=0$. This equation is prototypical of the more general equation $\dsize\sum_{i,j=0}^3g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$, where $x_0=t$ and $g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)=c_{ij}+d_{ij}u+\dsize\sum_{k=0}^3e_{ij}^k\partial_ku+O(|u|^2+|\nabla u|^2)$ are smooth functions of their arguments, with $c_{ij}, d_{ij}$ and $e_{ij}^k$ being constants, and $d_{ij}\neq0$ for some $(i,j)$; moreover, $\dsize\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e_{ij}^k(\partial_ku)\p_{ij} u$ does not fulfill the null cond…
In this paper, we mainly consider the initial boundary problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation \[ u_t-\mathrm{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=-|u|^{β-1}u+α|u|^{q-2}u, \] where $p>1,β>0$, $q\geq1$ and $α>0$. By using Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality, energy method and comparison principle, the phenomena of blowup and extinction are classified completely in the different ranges of reaction exponents.

We study the blowup criterion of smooth solution to the Oldroyd models. Let $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ be a smooth solution in $[0,T)$, it is shown that the solution $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ does not appear breakdown until $t=T$ provided $\nabla u(t,x)\in L^1([0,T]; L^\infty(\mr^n))$, $n=2,3$.
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
In this paper, we are concerned with the 3-D quasilinear wave equation $ \ds\sum_{i,j=0}^3g^{ij}(u, \p u)\p_{ij}^2u$ $=0$ with $(u(0,x), \p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $x_0=t$, $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$, $\p=(\p_0, \p_1, ..., \p_3)$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^\infty(\Bbb R^3)$, $\ve>0$ is small enough, and $g^{ij}(u, \p u)=g^{ji}(u, \p u)$ are smooth in their arguments. Without loss of generality, one can write $g^{ij}(u, \p u)=c^{ij}+d^{ij}u+\ds\sum_{k=0}^3e^{ij}_k\p_ku+O(|u|^2+|\p u|^2)$, where $c^{ij}, d^{ij}$ and $e^{ij}_k$ are some constants, and $\ds\sum_{i,j=0}^3c^{ij}\p_{ij}^2=-\s…
We prove a stable shock formation result for a large class of systems of quasilinear wave equations in two spatial dimensions. We give a precise description of the dynamics all the way up to the singularity. Our main theorem applies to systems of two wave equations featuring two distinct wave speeds and various quasilinear and semilinear nonlinearities, while the solutions under study are (non-symmetric) perturbations of simple outgoing plane symmetric waves. The two waves are allowed to interact all the way up to the singularity. Our approach is robust and could be used to prove shock formati…
In this paper, we study the energy critical 1-equivariant Landau-Lifschitz flow mapping $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$ with arbitrary given coefficients $ρ_1\in \mathbb{R}$, $ρ_2>0$. We prove that there exists a codimension one smooth well-localized set of initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state which generates type-II finite-time blowup solutions, and give a precise description of the corresponding singularity formation. In our proof, both the Schrödinger part and the heat part play important roles in the construction of approximate solutions and the mixed energy/Morawetz functio…
In this paper we consider smooth solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations with a linear dependence on the spatial variable. We reduce the evolution of these solutions to a matrix ODE, and show that there are such solutions that blowup in finite-time. Note that because these solutions have linear growth at infinity, this blowup is not a counterexample disproving the global regularity of strong solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations, as strong solutions must have sufficient decay at infinity. This paper does not resolve the Millennium Problem. Nonetheless, these solutions do exhibit several …
Alinhac solved a long-standing open problem in 2001 and established that quasilinear wave equations in two space dimensions with quadratic null nonlinearities admit global-in-time solutions, provided that the initial data are compactly supported and sufficiently small in Sobolev norm. In this work, Alinhac obtained an upper bound with polynomial growth in time for the top-order energy of the solutions. A natural question then arises whether the time-growth is a true phenomena, despite the possible conservation of basic energy. Analogous problems are also of central importance for Schrödinger e…

In this paper, we give two family of explicit blowup solution for $3$D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\RR^3$. Here one family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite.
A weighted norm inequality involving $A_1$ weights is obtained at the natural exponent for gradients of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations in Reifenberg flat domains. Certain gradient estimates in Lorentz-Morrey spaces below the natural exponent are also obtained as a consequence of our analysis.
This paper concerns with the explicit blowup phenomenon for 3D incompressible MHD equations in R^3. More precisely, we find two family of explicit blowup solutions for 3D incompressible MHD equations in R^3. One family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite. Moreover, our results tell us that the blowup phenomenon of 3D incompressible MHD can only take place in the velocity field of the fluid, but no blowup for the magnetic field.
This paper is concerned with the lifespan and the blowup mechanism for smooth solutions to the 2-D nonlinear wave equation $\p_t^2u-\ds\sum_{i=1}^2\p_i(c_i^2(u)\p_iu)$ $=0$, where $c_i(u)\in C^{\infty}(\Bbb R^n)$, $c_i(0)\neq 0$, and $(c_1'(0))^2+(c_2'(0))^2\neq 0$. This equation has an interesting physics background as it arises from the pressure-gradient model in compressible fluid dynamics and also in nonlinear variational wave equations. Under the initial condition $(u(0,x), \p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$ with $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$, and $\ve>0$ is small, we will…
In the paper, for the 3D quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation with the small initial data posed on the product space $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times \mathbb{T}$, we focus on the lower bound of the lifespan of the smooth solution. When the size of initial data is bounded by $\varepsilon_0>0$, by the space-time resonance method, it is shown that smooth solution exists up to the time $e^{c_{0}/\varepsilon_{0}^2}$ with $\varepsilon_0$ being sufficiently small and $c_0>0$ being some suitable constant.
We are concerned with a class of two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations $\p_t^2u-÷(c^2(u)\na u)=0$ or $\p_t^2u-c(u)÷(c(u)\na u)=0$ with small initial data $(u(0,x),\p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $c(u)$ is a smooth function, $c(0)\not =0$, $x\in\Bbb R^2$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$ depend only on $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$, and $\ve>0$ is sufficiently small. Such equations arise in a pressure-gradient model of fluid dynamics, also in a liquid crystal model or other variational wave equations. When $c'(0)\not= 0$ or $c'(0)=0$, $c"(0)\not= 0$, we establish blowup and d…
In this paper, we deal with the Cauchy problem of the quasilinear Schödinger equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} iu_t=Δu+2uh'(|u|^2)Δh(|u|^2)+(W(x)\ast|u|^2)u,\ x\in \mathbb{R}^N,\ t>0\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N. \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} Here $h(s)$ and $W(x)$ are some real valued functions. Our focus is to investigate how the interplay between the potential $W(x)$ and the quasilinear presence $h(s)$ affects the blowup in finite time and global existence of the solution. In a special, we can obtain the watershed condition on $W(x)$ in the following sens…
We establish an analog of the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for singularities of smooth solutions of the system of PDE arising in the Oldroyd model for ideal viscoelastic flow.
In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and blowup of smooth solutions of the 3-D compressible Euler equation with time-depending damping $$ \partial_tρ+\operatorname{div}(ρu)=0, \quad \partial_t(ρu)+\operatorname{div}\left(ρu\otimes u+p\,I_{3}\right)=-\,\fracμ{(1+t)^λ}\,ρu, \quad ρ(0,x)=\bar ρ+\varepsilonρ_0(x),\quad u(0,x)=\varepsilon u_0(x), $$ where $x\in\mathbb R^3$, $μ>0$, $λ\geq 0$, and $\barρ>0$ are constants, $ρ_0,\, u_0\in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb R^3)$, $(ρ_0, u_0)\not\equiv 0$, $ρ(0,\cdot)>0$, and $\varepsilon>0$ is sufficiently small. For $0\leqλ\leq1$, we show that …

We show that the one-dimensional fully parabolic Keller-Segel system with nonlinear diffusion possesses global-in-time solutions, provided the nonlinear diffusion is equal to (1+u)^{-α}, for α< 1, independently on the volume of the initial data. We also show that in the critical case, i.e. for α= 1, the same result holds for initial masses smaller than a prescribed constant. Additionally, we prove existence of initial data for which solution blows up in a finite time for any nonlinear diffusion integrable at infinity. Thus we generalize the known blowup result of parabolic-elliptic case to the…
Following the previous work [1], we investigate the impact of damping on the oscillation of smooth solutions to some kind of quasilinear wave equations with Robin and Dirichlet boundary condition. By using generalized Riccati transformation and technical inequality method, we give some sufficient conditions to guarantee the oscillation of all smooth solutions. From the results, we conclude that positive damping can ``hold back" oscillation. At last, some examples are presented to confirm our main results.
In this paper we establish existence of smooth positive solutions for a singular quasilinear elliptic system involving gradient terms. The approach combines sub-supersolutions method and Schauder's fixed point theorem.
We find a solution of a quasilinear elliptic equation with Dirichlet's boundary condition on a smooth bounded domain and involving an unbounded continuous nonlinearity with oscillatory behavior near the origin.
We establish a spatial gradient maximum principle for classical solutions to the initial and Neumann boundary value problem of some quasilinear parabolic equations on smooth convex domains.
Bounded smooth solutions of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for a wide variety of quasilinear parabolic equations, including graphical anisotropic mean curvature flows, have gradient bounded in terms of oscillation and elapsed time.
For a linear nonvariational operator structured on smooth Hörmander's vector fields, with Hölder continuous coefficients, we prove a regularity result in the spaces of Hölder functions. We deduce an analogous regularity result for nonvariational degenerate quasilinear equations.
We consider the global regularity problem for nonlinear wave systems $$ \Box u = f(u) $$ on Minkowski spacetime ${\bf R}^{1+d}$ with d'Alambertian $\Box := -\partial_t^2 + \sum_{i=1}^d \partial_{x_i}^2$, where the field $u \colon {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf R}^m$ is vector-valued, and the nonlinearity $f \colon {\bf R}^m \to {\bf R}^m$ is a smooth function with $f(0)=0$ and all derivatives bounded; the higher-dimensional sine-Gordon equation $\Box u = \sin u$ is a model example of this class of nonlinear wave system. For dimensions $d \leq 9$, it follows from the work of Heinz, Pecher, Brenner, and…
In this article we develop the local wellposedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in $H^m$ for all $m \geq 3$ on domains with perfectly conducting boundary conditions. The macroscopic Maxwell equations with instantaneous material laws for the polarization and the magnetization lead to a quasilinear first order hyperbolic system whose wellposedness in $H^3$ is not covered by the available results in this case. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local solutions in $H^m$ with $m \geq 3$ of the corresponding initial boundary value problem if the material laws and the data are accor…
We study the finite time blow up of smooth solutions to the Compressible Navier-Stokes system when the initial data contain vacuums. We prove that any classical solutions of viscous compressible fluids without heat conduction will blow up in finite time, as long as the initial data has an isolated mass group (see definition in the paper). The results hold regardless of either the size of the initial data or the far fields being vacuum or not. This improves the blowup results of Xin (1998) by removing the crucial assumptions that the initial density has compact support and the smooth solution h…

The dynamics of the poles of the two--soliton solutions of the modified Korteweg--de Vries equation $$ u_t + 6u^2u_x + u_{xxx} = 0 $$ are determined. A consequence of this study is the existence of classes of smooth, complex--valued solutions of this equation, defined for $-\infty < x < \infty$, exponentially decreasing to zero as $|x| \to \infty$, that blow up in finite time.
