This paper studies the stability and large-time behavior of the three-dimensional (3-D) Boltzmann equation near shock profiles. We prove the nonlinear stability of the composite wave consisting of two shock profiles under general perturbations without the assumption of integral zero of macroscopic quantities. To address the challenge caused by the compressibility of shock profiles, we apply the method of anti-derivative based on macro-micro decomposition. However, the system of anti-derivatives presents certain difficulties. Firstly, general perturbations may generate diffusion waves that evolve and interact with shock profiles, resulting in errors that are not controllable. We therefore introduce a set of coupled diffusion waves to cancel out these poor errors and perform careful estimates on wave interactions. Secondly, we perform diagonalized system estimates to fully exploit the compressibility of shock profiles and control terms that decay slowly. Thirdly, the presence of diffusion waves causes critical terms with decay $(1+t)^{-1}$, and we introduce a Poincaré type of inequality to address these terms. Finally, estimates on anti-derivatives can only control terms along the propagation direction, while for transversal directions, we use the entropy-entropy flux pair as well as the Poincaré inequality to control the lower order terms using diffusion terms. As a result, we obtain nonlinear stability through the energy method, which is the first stability result for the planar shock of the multi-dimensional Boltzmann equation to the best of our knowledge.
We investigate the time-asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction wave for the three-dimensional Boltzmann equation, based on the micro-macro decomposition introduced in [24, 22] and our new observations on the underlying wave structures of the equation to overcome the difficulties due to the wave propagation along the transverse directions and its interactions with the planar rarefaction wave. Note that this is the first stability result of planar rarefaction wave for 3D Boltzmann equation, while the corresponding results for the shock and contact discontinuities are still completely open.
In this paper, we establish the global in time hydrodynamic limit of Boltzmann equation to the planar rarefaction wave of compressible Euler system in three dimensional space $x\in\mathbb{R}^3$ for general collision kernels. Our approch is based on a generalized Hilbert expansion, and a recent $L^2-L^\infty$ framework. In particular, we improve the $L^2$-estimate to be a localized version because the planar rarefaction wave is indeed a one-dimensional wave which makes the source terms to be not integrable in the $L^2$ energy estimate of three dimensional problem. We also point out that the wav…
The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear stability of viscous shock waves and rarefaction wave for bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system. To this end, motivated by the micro-macro decomposition to the Boltzmann equation in [21, 23], we first set up a new micro-macro decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system and give a unified framework to study the nonlinear stability of the basic wave patterns to the system. Then, as the applications of this new decomposition, the time-asymptotic stability of the two typical nonlinear wave…
Using a weighted $H^s$-contraction mapping argument based on the macro-micro decomposition of Liu and Yu, we give an elementary proof of existence, with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation, of small-amplitude shock profiles of the Boltzmann equation with hard-sphere potential, recovering and slightly sharpening results obtained by Caflisch and Nicolaenko using different techniques. A key technical point in both analyses is that the linearized collision operator $L$ is negative definite on its range, not only in the standard square-root Maxwellian weighted n…
We prove the nonlinear stability of the planar viscous shock up to a time-dependent shift for the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes equations under the generic perturbations, in particular, without zero mass conditions. Moreover, the time-dependent shift function keeps the shock profile shape time-asymptotically. Our stability result is unconditional for the weak planar Navier-Stokes shock. Our proof is motivated by the $a$-contraction method (a kind of weighted $L^2$-relative entropy method) with time-dependent shift introduced in [10,11,13] for the stability of viscous shock …
Asymptotic decay laws for planar and nonplanar shock waves and the first order associated discontinuities that catch up with the shock from behind are obtained using four different approximation methods. The singular surface theory is used to derive a pair of transport equations for the shock strength and the associated first order discontinuity, which represents the effect of precursor disturbances that overtake the shock from behind. The asymptotic behaviour of both the discontinuities is completely analysed. It is noticed that the decay of a first order discontinuity is much faster than the…
The convergence of the Boltzmann equaiton to the compressible Euler equations when the Knudsen number tends to zero has been a long standing open problem in the kinetic theory. In the setting of Riemann solution that contains the generic superposition of shock, rarefaction wave and contact discontinuity to the Euler equations, we succeed in justifying this limit by introducing hyperbolic waves with different solution backgrounds to capture the extra masses carried by the hyperbolic approximation of the rarefaction wave and the diffusion approximation of contact discontinuity.
We establish existence with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation of small-amplitude shock profiles of a class of semilinear relaxation systems including discrete velocity models obtained from Boltzmann and other kinetic equations. Our method of analysis is based on the macro--micro decomposition introduced by Liu and Yu for the study of Boltzmann profiles, but applied to the stationary rather than the time-evolutionary equations. This yields a simple proof by contraction mapping in weighted $H^s$ spaces.
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…

We present a streamlined account of recent developments in the stability theory for planar viscous shock waves, with an emphasis on applications to physical models with ``real,'' or partial viscosity. The main result is the establishment of necessary, or ``weak'', and sufficient, or ``strong'', conditions for nonlinear stability analogous to those established by Majda [Ma.1--3] in the inviscid case but (generically) separated by a codimension-one set in parameter space rather than an open set as in the inviscid case. The importance of codimension one is that transition between nonlinear stabil…
This paper concerns the dynamic stability of the steady 3-D wave structure of a planar normal shock front intersecting perpendicularly to a planar solid wall for unsteady potential flows. The stability problem can be formulated as a free boundary problem of a quasi-linear hyperbolic equation of second order in a dihedral-space domain between the shock front and the solid wall. The key difficulty is brought by the edge singularity of the space domain, the intersection curve between the shock front and the solid wall. Different from the 2-D case, for which the singular part of the boundary is on…
The goal of this paper is to prove the existence and stability of shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws with space periodic flux, in the multi-dimensional case. Such a result had been proved by the first author in one space dimension, but the extension to a multi-dimensional setting makes the existence proof non-trivial. We construct approximate solutions by restricting the size of the domain and then passing to the limit as the size of the domain goes to infinity. One of the key steps is a " normalization " procedure, which ensures that the limit objects obtained by the approximation sc…
The aim of this article is to explain why similar weak stability criteria appear in both the construction of steady Mach stem configurations bifurcating from a reference planar shock wave solution to the compressible Euler equations, as studied by Majda and Rosales [Stud. Appl. Math. 1984], and in the weakly nonlinear stability analysis of the same planar shock performed by the same authors [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 1983], when that shock is viewed as a solution to the evolutionary compressible Euler equations. By carefully studying the normal mode analysis of planar shocks in the evolutionary case…
We construct center manifolds for a class of degenerate evolution equations including the steady Boltzmann equation and related kinetic models, establishing in the process existence and behavior of small-amplitude kinetic shock and boundary layers. Notably, for Boltzmann's equation, we show that elements of the center manifold decay in velocity at near-Maxwellian rate, in accord with the formal Chapman-Enskog picture of near-equilibrium ow as evolution along the manifold of Maxwellian states, or Grad moment approximation via Hermite polynomials in velocity. Our analysis is from a classical dyn…
Combining work of Serre and Zumbrun, Benzoni-Gavage, Serre, and Zumbrun, and Texier and Zumbrun, we propose as a mechanism for the onset of cellular instability of viscous shock and detonation waves in a finite-cross-section duct the violation of the refined planar stability condition of Zumbrun--Serre, a viscous correction of the inviscid planar stability condition of Majda. More precisely, we show for a model problem involving flow in a rectangular duct with artificial periodic boundary conditions that transition to multidimensional instability through violation of the refined stability cond…

We study by a combination of analytical and numerical Evans function techniques multi-D viscous and inviscid stability and associated transverse bifurcation of planar slow Lax MHD shocks in a channel with periodic boundary conditions. Notably, this includes the first multi-D numerical Evans function study for viscous MHD. Our results suggest that, rather than a planar shock, a nonplanar traveling wave with the same normal velocity is the typical mode of propagation in the slow Lax mode. Moreover, viscous and inviscid stability transitions appear to agree, answering (for this particular model a…
Shock wave theory was first studied for gas dynamics, for which shocks appear as compression waves. A shock wave is characterized as a sharp transition, even discontinuity in the flow. In fact, shocks appear in many different physical situation and represent strong nonlinearity of the physical processes. Important progresses have been made on shock wave theory in recent years. We will survey the topics for which much more remain to be made. These include the effects of reactions, dissipations and relaxation, shock waves for interacting particles and Boltzmann equation, and multi-dimensional ga…
We describe recent results with A. Pogan developing dynamical systems tools for a class of degenerate evolution equations arising in kinetic theory, including the steady Boltzmann and BGK equations. These yield information on structure of large- and small-amplitude kinetic shocks, the first steps in a larger program toward time-evolutionary stability and asymptotic behavior
In several space dimensions, scalar shock waves between two constant states u $\pm$ are not necessarily planar. We describe them in detail. Then we prove their asymptotic stability, assuming that they are uniformly non-characteristic. Our result is conditional for a general flux, while unconditional for the multi-D Burgers equation.
We investigate non-contraction of large perturbations around intermediate entropic shock waves and contact discontinuities for the three-dimensional planar compressible isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To do that, we take advantage of criteria developed by Kang and Vasseur in [6], and non-contraction property is measured by pseudo distance based on relative entropy.
We establish pointwise bounds for the Green function and consequent linearized stability for multidimensional planar relaxation shocks of general relaxation systems whose equilibrium model is scalar, under the necessary assumption of spectral stability. Moreover, we obtain nonlinear $L^{2}$ asymptotic behavior/sharp decay rate of perturbed weak shocks of general simultaneously symmetrizable relaxation systems, under small $L^{1}\cap H^{[d/2]+3}$ perturbations with first moment in the normal direction to the front.
In this paper, we are concerned with the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in three-dimensional spatial space without angular cutoff in a rectangular duct with or without physical boundary conditions. Near a local Maxwellian with macroscopic quantities given by rarefaction wave solution of one-dimensional compressible Euler equations, we establish the time-asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction wave solutions for the Cauchy problem to VPB system with periodic or specular-reflection boundary condition. In particular, we successfully introduce physical boundaries, namely, specular-reflec…
We describe recent analytical and numerical results on stability and behavior of viscous and inviscid detonation waves obtained by dynamical systems/Evans function techniques like those used to study shock and reaction diffusion waves. In the first part, we give a broad description of viscous and inviscid results for 1D perturbations; in the second, we focus on inviscid high-frequency stability in multi-D and associated questions in turning point theory/WKB expansion.
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
We study nonlinear time-asymptotic stability of small--amplitude planar Lax shocks in a model consisting of a system of multi--dimensional conservation laws coupled with an elliptic system. Such a model can be found in context of dynamics of a gas in presence of radiation. Our main result asserts that the standard uniform Evans stability condition implies nonlinear stability. The main analysis is based on the earlier developments by Zumbrun for multi-dimensional viscous shock waves and by Lattanzio-Mascia-Nguyen-Plaza-Zumbrun for one--dimensional radiative shock profiles.
We investigate existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles for a class of planar models including the incompressible shear case studied by Antman and Malek-Madani. We establish that the resulting equations fall into the class of symmetrizable hyperbolic--parabolic systems, hence spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability with sharp rates of decay. The new contributions are treatment of the compressible case, formulation of a rigorous nonlinear stability theory, including verification of stability of small-amplitude Lax shocks, and the systematic incorporation in o…
We investigate one- and multi-dimensional stability of noncharacteristic boundary layers in the limit approaching a standing planar shock wave $\bar U(x_1)$, $x_1>0$, obtaining necessary conditions of (i) weak stability of the limiting shock, (ii) weak stability of the constant layer $u\equiv U_-:=\lim_{z\to -\infty} \bar U(z)$, and (iii) nonnegativity of a modified Lopatinski determinant similar to that of the inviscid shock case. For Lax 1-shocks, we obtain equally simple sufficient conditions; for $p$-shocks, $p>1$, the situation appears to be more complicated. Using these results, we deter…
A basic question about the existence and stability of the Boltzmann equation in general non-convex domain with the specular reflection boundary condition has been widely open. In this paper, we consider cylindrical domains whose cross sections are general non-convex analytic planar domain. We establish the global-wellposedness and asymptotic stability of the Boltzmann equation with the specular reflection boundary condition in such domains. Our method consists of sharp classification of billiard trajectories which bounce infinitely many times or hit the boundary tangentially at some moment, an…
