Combining work of Serre and Zumbrun, Benzoni-Gavage, Serre, and Zumbrun, and Texier and Zumbrun, we propose as a mechanism for the onset of cellular instability of viscous shock and detonation waves in a finite-cross-section duct the violation of the refined planar stability condition of Zumbrun--Serre, a viscous correction of the inviscid planar stability condition of Majda. More precisely, we show for a model problem involving flow in a rectangular duct with artificial periodic boundary conditions that transition to multidimensional instability through violation of the refined stability condition of planar viscous shock waves on the whole space generically implies for a duct of sufficiently large cross-section a cascade of Hopf bifurcations involving more and more complicated cellular instabilities.
The refined condition is numerically calculable as described in Benzoni-Gavage--Serre-Zumbrun.
We establish global-posedness in time for the viscous Boussinesq equations in two dimensions of space with temperature-dependent diffusivity in the framework of a smooth vortex patch. We also provide the inviscid limit for velocity, temperature, and associated flow toward the system studied very recently in \cite{Paicu-Zhu} as soon as the viscosity goes to zero, and quantify the rate of convergence.
We consider inviscid limits to shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws in one space dimension, with strict convex fluxes. We show that we can obtain sharp estimates in $L^2$, for a class of large perturbations and for any bounded time interval. Those perturbations can be chosen big enough to destroy the viscous layer. This shows that the fast convergence to the shock does not depend on the fine structure of the viscous layers. This is the first application of the relative entropy method developed in [22], [23] to the study of an inviscid limit to a shock.
We consider by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques some basic questions regarding the relations between inviscid and viscous stability and existence of a convex entropy. Specifically, for a system possessing a convex entropy, in particular for the equations of gas dynamics with a convex equation of state, we ask: (i) can inviscid instability occur? (ii) can there occur viscous instability not detected by inviscid theory? (iii) can there occur the ---necessarily viscous--- effect of Hopf bifurcation, or "galloping instability"? and, perhaps most important from a practical point…
We study the vanishing viscosity limit of the one-dimensional Burgers equation near nondegenerate shock formation. We develop a matched asymptotic expansion that describes small-viscosity solutions to arbitrary order up to the moment the first shock forms. The inner part of this expansion has a novel structure based on a fractional spacetime Taylor series for the inviscid solution. We obtain sharp vanishing viscosity rates in a variety of norms, including $L^\infty$. Comparable prior results break down in the vicinity of shock formation. We partially fill this gap.
Extending our earlier work on Lax-type shocks of systems of conservation laws, we establish existence and stability of curved multidimensional shock fronts in the vanishing viscosity limit for general Lax- or undercompressive-type shock waves of nonconservative hyperbolic systems with parabolic regularization. The hyperbolic equations may be of variable multiplicity and the parabolic regularization may be of ``real'', or partially parabolic, type. We prove an existence result for inviscid nonconservative shocks that extends to multidimensional shocks a one-dimensional result of X. Lin proved b…
The inviscid 2D Boussinesq system with thermal diffusivity and multiplicative noise of transport type is studied in the $L^2$-setting. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noise, weak solutions to the stochastic 2D Boussinesq equations converge weakly to the unique solution of the deterministic viscous Boussinesq system. Consequently, the transport noise asymptotically regularizes the inviscid 2D Boussinesq system and enhances dissipation in the limit.
We study by a combination of analytical and numerical Evans function techniques multi-D viscous and inviscid stability and associated transverse bifurcation of planar slow Lax MHD shocks in a channel with periodic boundary conditions. Notably, this includes the first multi-D numerical Evans function study for viscous MHD. Our results suggest that, rather than a planar shock, a nonplanar traveling wave with the same normal velocity is the typical mode of propagation in the slow Lax mode. Moreover, viscous and inviscid stability transitions appear to agree, answering (for this particular model a…
We describe recent analytical and numerical results on stability and behavior of viscous and inviscid detonation waves obtained by dynamical systems/Evans function techniques like those used to study shock and reaction diffusion waves. In the first part, we give a broad description of viscous and inviscid results for 1D perturbations; in the second, we focus on inviscid high-frequency stability in multi-D and associated questions in turning point theory/WKB expansion.
The viscous and inviscid aggregation equation with Newtonian potential models a number of different physical systems, and has close analogs in 2D incompressible fluid mechanics. We consider a slight generalization of these equations in the whole space, establishing well-posedness and spatial decay of the viscous equations, and obtaining the convergence of viscous solutions to the inviscid solution as the viscosity goes to zero.

In this article we consider weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid flow equations with initial data admitting a one-dimensional symmetry group. We examine both the viscous and inviscid cases. For the case of viscous flows, we prove that Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations preserve initially imposed symmetry and that such symmetric flows are stable under general three-dimensional perturbations, globally in time. We work in three different contexts: two-and-a-half-dimensional, helical and axi-symmetric flows. In the inviscid case, we o…
We introduce a special stochastic perturbation of the flow of diffuse matter as a curve in the group of diffeomorphisms of flat n-dimensional torus such that the perturbed system yields a solution of Burgers equation in the tangent space at unit of the diffeomorphism group. The same perturbation of the flow of perfect incompressible fluid yields a solution of Reynolds type equation but under some special external force on the diffeomorphism group it transforms into a solution of Navier-Stokes equation without external force.
Motivated by radiation hydrodynamics, we analyse a 2x2 system consisting of a one-dimensional viscous conservation law with strictly convex flux -- the viscous Burgers' equation being a paradigmatic example -- coupled with an elliptic equation, named viscous Hamer-type system. In the regime of small viscosity and for large shocks, namely when the profile of the corresponding underlying inviscid model undergoes a discontinuity -- usually called sub-shock -- it is proved the existence of a smooth propagating front, regularising the jump of the corresponding inviscid equation. The proof is based …
We study a generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system for an incompressible fluid where the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress tensor is related to the symmetric part of the velocity gradient via a maximal monotone 2-graph that is continuously parametrized by the temperature. As such, the considered fluid may go through transitions between three of the following regimes: it can flow as a Bingham fluid for a specific value of the temperature, while it can behave as the Navier-Stokes fluid for another value of the temperature or, for yet another temperature, it can respond as the Euler…
We study the large time behavior of solutions to two-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations linearized about shear flows of the mixing layer type in the unbounded channel $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$. Under a simple spectral stability assumption on a self-adjoint operator, we prove a local form of the linear inviscid damping that is uniform with respect to small viscosity. We also prove a local form of the enhanced viscous dissipation that takes place at times of order $ν^{-1/3}$, $ν$ being the small viscosity. To prove these results, we use a Hamiltonian approach, following the conju…
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
The aim of this contribution is to make a connection between two recent results concerning the dynamics of vortices in incompressible planar flows. The first one is an asymptotic expansion, in the vanishing viscosity limit, of the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with point vortices as initial data. In such a situation, it is known (Gallay, 2011) that the solution behaves to leading order like a linear superposition of Oseen vortices whose centers evolve according to the point vortex system, but higher order corrections can also be computed which describe the deformation …

We carry out a systematic analytical and numerical study of spectral stability of discontinuous roll wave solutions of the inviscid Saint Venant equations, based on a periodic Evans-Lopatinski determinant analogous to the periodic Evans function of Gardner in the (smooth) viscous case, obtaining a complete spectral stability diagram useful in hydraulic engineering and related applications. In particular, we obtain an explicit low-frequency stability boundary, which, moreover, matches closely with its (numerically-determined) counterpart in the viscous case. This is seen to be related to but no…
We present a streamlined account of recent developments in the stability theory for planar viscous shock waves, with an emphasis on applications to physical models with ``real,'' or partial viscosity. The main result is the establishment of necessary, or ``weak'', and sufficient, or ``strong'', conditions for nonlinear stability analogous to those established by Majda [Ma.1--3] in the inviscid case but (generically) separated by a codimension-one set in parameter space rather than an open set as in the inviscid case. The importance of codimension one is that transition between nonlinear stabil…
We consider the inviscid unsteady Prandtl system in two dimensions, motivated by the fact that it should model to leading order separation and singularity formation for the original viscous system. We give a sharp expression for the maximal time of existence of regular solutions, showing that singularities only happen at the boundary or on the set of zero vorticity, and that they correspond to boundary layer separation. We then exhibit new Lagrangian formulae for backward self-similar profiles, and study them also with a different approach that was initiated by Elliott-Smith-Cowley and Cassel-…
Inspired by recent developments in Berdina-like models for turbulence, we propose an inviscid regularization for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations. We are particularly interested in the celebrated question of blowup in finite time of the solution gradient of the SQG equations. The new regularization yields a necessary and sufficient condition, satisfied by the regularized solution, when a regularization parameter $α$ tends to zero, for the solution of the original SQG equations to develop a singularity in finite time. As opposed to the commonly used viscous regularization, the invi…
A general class of linear advective PDEs, whose leading order term is of viscous dissipative type, is considered. It is proved that beyond the limit of the essential spectrum of the underlying inviscid operator, the eigenvalues of the viscous operator, in the limit of vanishing viscosity, converge precisely to those of the inviscid operator. The general class of PDEs includes the equations of incompressible fluid dynamics. Hence eigenvalues of the Navier-Stokes operator converge in the inviscid limit to the eigenvalues of the Euler operator beyond the essential spectrum.
We prove a stability result of constant equilibria for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system uniform in the inviscid limit. We allow the initial density to be close to a constant and the potential part of the initial velocity to be small independently of the rescaled viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ while the incompressible part of the initial velocity is assumed to be small compared to $\varepsilon$. We then get a unique global smooth solution. We also prove a uniform in $\varepsilon$ time decay rate for these solutions. Our approach allows to combine the parabolic energy estima…
The inviscid limit for the two-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations on the half plane is considered under the no-slip boundary condition. When the initial deformation tensor is a perturbation of the identity matrix and the initial density is near a positive constant, we establish the uniform estimates of solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the conormal Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that for the corresponding inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, one does not expect the uniform energy estimates of solutions …

G-equations are well-known front propagation models in turbulent combustion and describe the front motion law in the form of local normal velocity equal to a constant (laminar speed) plus the normal projection of fluid velocity. In level set formulation, G-equations are Hamilton-Jacobi equations with convex ($L^1$ type) but non-coercive Hamiltonians. Viscous G-equations arise from either numerical approximations or regularizations by small diffusion. The nonlinear eigenvalue $\bar H$ from the cell problem of the viscous G-equation can be viewed as an approximation of the inviscid turbulent fla…
Adopting the setting for the study of existence and scale locality of the energy cascade in 3D viscous flows in physical space recently introduced by the authors to 3D inviscid flows, it is shown that the anomalous dissipation is -- in the case of decaying turbulence -- indeed capable of triggering the cascade which then continues ad infinitum, confirming Onsager's predictions.
The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearl…
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear i…
We consider the inviscid limit for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the particular case where the initial flow is a finite collection of point vortices. We suppose that the initial positions and the circulations of the vortices do not depend on the viscosity parameter ν, and we choose a time T > 0 such that the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff point vortex system is well-posed on the interval [0,T]. Under these assumptions, we prove that the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation converges, as ν-> 0, to a superposition of Lamb-Oseen vortices whose centers evolve according to a v…
The motion of the free surface of an incompressible fluid is a very active research area. Most of these works examine the case of an inviscid fluid. However, in several practical applications, there are instances where the viscous damping needs to be considered. In this paper we derive and study a new asymptotic model for the motion of unidirectional viscous water waves. In particular, we establish the global well-posedness in Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we also establish the global well-posedness and decay of a fourth order PDE modelling bidirectional water waves with viscosity moving in dee…
The present contribution proves the asymptotic orbital stability of viscous regularizations of stable Riemann shocks of scalar balance laws, uniformly with respect to the viscosity/diffusion parameter $ε$. The uniformity is understood in the sense that all constants involved in the stability statements are uniform and that the corresponding multiscale $ε$-dependent topology reduces to the classical $W^{1,\infty}$-topology when restricted to functions supported away from the shock location. Main difficulties include that uniformity precludes any use of parabolic regularization to close regulari…
The paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional degenerate viscous lake equations when the Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the impermeable boundary of a simply connected bounded regular domain. When the initial vorticity is in the Lebesgue space $L^q$ with $2<q\le\infty$, we show the degenerate viscous lake equations possess a unique global solution and the solution converges to a corresponding weak solution of the inviscid lake equations. In the special case when the vorticity is in $L^\infty$, an explicit convergence rate is obtained.
Well-posedness, magnetic helicity conservation, inviscid limit and asymptotic stability for the generalized Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations with the Hall effect
In [F. Jiang, S. Jiang, On instability and stability of three-dimensional gravity driven viscous flows in a bounded domain, Adv. Math., 264 (2014) 831--863], Jiang et.al. investigated the instability of Rayleigh--Taylor steady-state of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. In particular, they proved the steady-state is nonlinearly unstable under a restrictive condition of that the derivative function of steady density possesses a positive lower bound. In this article, by exploiting a standard energy functional a…
The classical (inviscid) stability analysis of shock waves is based on the Lopatinski determinant, Δ---a function of frequencies whose zeros determine the stability of the underlying shock. A careful analysis of Δ shows that in some cases the stable and unstable regions of parameter space are separated by an open set of parameters. Zumbrun and Serre [Indiana Univ. Math. J., 48 (1999) 937--992] have shown that, by taking account of viscous effects not present in the definition of Δ, it is possible to determine the precise location in the open, neutral set of parameter space at which stability i…
In this note we present the current status of the derivation of a viscous Serre-Green-Naghdi system. For this goal, the flow domain is separated into two regions. The upper region is governed by inviscid Euler equations, while the bottom region (the so-called boundary layer) is described by Navier-Stokes equations. We consider a particular regime linking the Reynolds number and the shallowness parameter. The computations presented in this note are performed in the fully nonlinear regime. The boundary layer flow reduces to a Prantdl-like equation. Further approximations seem to be needed to obt…
