The motion of the free surface of an incompressible fluid is a very active research area. Most of these works examine the case of an inviscid fluid. However, in several practical applications, there are instances where the viscous damping needs to be considered. In this paper we derive and study a new asymptotic model for the motion of unidirectional viscous water waves. In particular, we establish the global well-posedness in Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we also establish the global well-posedness and decay of a fourth order PDE modelling bidirectional water waves with viscosity moving in deep water with or without surface tension effects.
Starting from the paper by Dias, Dyachenko and Zakharov (\emph{Physics Letters A, 2008}) on viscous water waves, we derive a model that describes water waves with viscosity moving in deep water with or without surface tension effects. This equation takes the form of a nonlocal fourth order wave equation and retains the main contributions to the dynamics of the free surface. Then, we prove the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of such equation.
In this article, we derive a viscous Boussinesq system for surface water waves from Navier-Stokes equations. We use neither the irrotationality assumption, nor the Zakharov-Craig-Sulem formulation. During the derivation, we find the bottom shear stress, and also the decay rate for shallow water. In order to justify our derivation, we derive the viscous Korteweg-de Vries equation from our viscous Boussinesq system and compare it to the ones found in the bibliography. We also extend the system to the 3-D case.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the 2D viscous shallow water equations with low regularity assumptions on the initial data as well as the initial height bounded away from zero.
In this paper, we prove that the 2D viscous shallow water equations is ill-posed in the critical Besov spaces $\B^{\frac2p-1}_{p,1}(\R^2)$ with $p>4$. Our proof mainly depends on the method introduced by the paper \cite{C-M-Z4}.
The failure of uniform dependence on the data is an interesting property of classical solution for a hyperbolic system. In this paper, we consider the solution map of the Cauchy problem to the 2D viscous shallow water equations which is a hyperbolic-parabolic system. We prove that the solution map of this problem is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s\times H^{s}$ for $s>2$.
In this note, we show the existence of regular solutions to the stationary version of the Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids with a density dependent viscosity, known as the shallow water equations. For arbitrary large forcing we are able to construct a solution, provided the total mass is sufficiently large. The main mathematical part is located in the construction of solutions. Uniqueness is impossible to obtain, since the gradient of the velocity is of magnitude of the force. The investigation is connected to the corresponding singular limit as Mach number goes to zero and methods…
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. We first prove the local well-posedness of this problem by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition, and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then, we get the global existence of the system with small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. Our obtained result improves the recent result in \cite{W}
We consider the Cacuhy problem for a viscous compressible rotating shallow water system with a third-order surface-tension term involved, derived recently in the modelling of motions for shallow water with free surface in a rotating sub-domain. The global existence of the solution in the space of Besov type is shown for initial data close to a constant equilibrium state away from the vacuum. Unlike the previous analysis about the compressible fluid model without coriolis forces, the rotating effect causes a coupling between two parts of Hodge's decomposition of the velocity vector field, addit…
The purpose of this paper is to derive rigorously the so called viscous shallow water equations given for instance page 958-959 in [A. Oron, S.H. Davis, S.G. Bankoff, Rev. Mod. Phys, 69 (1997), 931?980]. Such a system of equations is similar to compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with a non-constant viscosity. To do that, we consider a layer of incompressible and Newtonian fluid which is relatively thin, assuming no surface tension at the free surface. The motion of the fluid is described by 3d Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and free surface. We prove t…
The derivation of shallow water models from Navier-Stokes equations is revisited yielding a class of two-layer shallow water models. An improved velocity profile is proposed, based on the superposition of an ideal fluid and a viscous layer inspired by the Interactive Boundary Layer interaction used in aeronautics. This leads to a new friction law which depends not only on velocity and depth but of the variations of velocity and thickness of boundary layer. The resulting system is an extended shallow water model consisting of three depth-integrated equations: the first two are mass and momentum …
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in Besov spaces. We firstly prove the local well-posedness of this problem in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>max\{1,\frac{2}{p}\}$, $1\leq p,r\leq \infty$ by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then we can prove the global existence of the system with small enough initial data in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $1\leq p\leq2$, $1\leq r<\infty$ and $s>\frac{2}{p}$. Our obtained results generalize and cover the recent results …
In this article, we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity coefficients and a term of capillarity introduced by Coquel et al in \cite{5CR}. This model includes at the same time the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficients, shallow-water system and the model of Rohde. We first study the well-posedness of the model in critical regularity spaces with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. In a functional setting as close as possibleto the physical energy spaces, we prove global existence of solutions close to a…
We study the Cauchy problem of the 2D viscous shallow water equations in some critical Besov spaces $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. As is known, this system is locally well-posed for large initial data as well as globally well-posed for small initial data in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p<4$ and ill-posed in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p>4$. In this paper, we prove that this system is ill-posed for …
In this paper we derive some new weakly nonlinear asymptotic models describing viscous waves in deep water with or without surface tension effects. These asymptotic models take into account several different dissipative effects and are obtained from the free boundary problems formulated in the works of Dias, Dyachenko and Zakharov (Physics Letters A, 2008), Jiang, Ting, Perlin and Schultz (Journal of Fluid Mechanics,1996) and Wu, Liu and Yue (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2006).
In this note, we announce a complete classification of stability of periodic roll-wave solutions of the viscous shallow-water equations, from their onset at Froude number $F\approx 2$ up to the infinite-Froude limit. For intermediate Froude numbers, we obtain numerically a particularly simple power-law relation between $F$ and the boundaries of the region of stable periods, that appears potentially useful in hydraulic engineering applications. In the asymptotic regime $F\to 2$ (onset), we provide an analytic expression of the stability boundaries whereas in the limit $F\to\infty$, we show that…
On global classical and weak solutions with arbitrary large initial data to the multi-dimensional viscous Saint-Venant system and compressible Navier-Stokes equations subject to the BD entropy condition under spherical symmetry
In this note, we propose in the full generality a link between the BD entropy introduced by D. Bresch andB. Desjardins for the viscous shallow-water equations and the Bernis-Friedman (called BF) dissipative entropyintroduced to study the lubrications equations. Dierent dissipative entropies are obtained playing with the dragterms on the viscous shallow water equations. It helps for instance to prove global existence of nonnegativeweak solutions for the lubrication equations starting from the global existence of nonnegative weak solutions forappropriate viscous shallow-water equations.
Global classical solutions to the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation with homogenious Dirichlet boundary conditions are shown to converge to zero at the same speed as the linear heat semigroup when p > 1. For p = 1, an exponential decay to zero is also obtained in one space dimension but the rate depends on a and differs from that of the linear heat equation. Finally, if 0 < p < 1 and a < 0, finite time extinction occurs for non-negative solutions.
For a nonlinear system of coupled PDEs, that describes evolution of a viscous thin liquid sheet and takes account of surface tension at the free surface, we show exponential $(H^1,\,L^2)$ asymptotic decay to the flat profile of its solutions considered with general initial data. Additionally, by transforming the system to Lagrangian coordinates we show that the minimal thickness of the sheet stays positive for all times. This result proves the conjecture formally accepted in the physical literature [1], that a viscous sheet can not rupture in finite time in absence of external forcing. Moreove…
We consider the vorticity formulation of the 2-D viscous Camassa-Holm equations in the whole space. We establish global existence for solutions corresponding to initial data in $L^1$ and describe the large time behavior of solutions with sufficiently small and localized initial data. We calculate the rate at which such solutions approach an ``un-filtered'' Oseen vortex by computing the rate at which the solution of a scaled vorticity problem approaches the solution to a corresponding linearized equation.
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
In this paper, we consider a layer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic filed in a horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary bounded by a free boundary and below bounded by a flat rigid interface. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem for both the case with and without surface tension. Moreover, we show that the global solution decays to the equilibrium exponentially in the case with surface tension, however the global solution decays to the equilibrium at an almost exponential rate in the case without surface tension.
We consider the viscous $n$-dimensional Camassa-Holm equations, with $n=2,3,4$ in the whole space. We establish existence and regularity of the solutions and study the large time behavior of the solutions in several Sobolev spaces. We first show that if the data is only in $L^2$ then the solution decays without a rate and that this is the best that can be expected for data in $L^2$. For solutions with data in $H^m\cap L^1$ we obtain decay at an algebraic rate which is optimal in the sense that it coincides with the rate of the underlying linear part.
We propose a two-dimensional flow model of a viscous fluid between two close moving surfaces. We show that its asymptotic behavior, when the distance between the two surfaces tends to zero, is the same as that of the the Navier-Stokes equations. The solutions of the new model and Navier-Stokes equations converge to the same limit problem, that depends on the boundary conditions. If slip velocity boundary conditions are imposed on the upper and lower bound surfaces, the limit is solution of a lubrication model, but if the tractions and friction forces are known on both bound surfaces, the limit…
We address the analyticity and large time decay rates for strong solutions of the Hall-MHD equations. By Gevrey estimates, we show that the strong solution with small initial date in $H^r(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $r>\f 52$ becomes analytic immediately after $t>0$, and the radius of analyticity will grow like $\sqrt{t}$ in time. Upper and lower bounds on the decay of higher order derivatives are also obtained, which extends the previous work by Chae and Schonbek (J. Differential Equations 255 (2013), 3971--3982).
We consider the long time behavior of weak and strong solutions of the n-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system in the half space, with $n\geq3$ . The $L^r(R^n_+)$-asymptotics of strong solutions and their first three derivatives, with $1\leq r\leq\infty$, are derived combining $L^q-L^r$ estimates and properties of the fractional powers of the Stokes operator. For the $L^\infty-$asymptotics of the second order derivatives the unboundedness of the projection operator $P: L^\infty(R^n_+)\rightarrow L^\infty_σ(R^n_+)$ is dealt by an appropriate decomposition of the nonlinear term.
The present paper deals with the Cauchy problem of a multi-dimensional non-conservative viscous compressible two-fluid system. We first study the well-posedness of the model in spaces with critical regularity indices with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. In the functional setting as close as possible to the physical energy spaces, we prove the unique global solvability of strong solutions close to a stable equilibrium state. Furthermore, under a mild additional decay assumption involving only the low frequencies of the data, we establish the time decay rates for the construc…
In this paper, we address the space-time decay properties for strong solutions to the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD equations. We obtained the same space-time decay rates as those of the heat equation. Based on the temporal decay results in \cite{cs}, we find that one can obtain weighted estimates of the magnetic field $B$ by direct weighted energy estimate, and then by regarding the magnetic convection term as a forcing term in the velocity equations, we can obtain the weighted estimates for the vorticity, which yields the corresponding estimates for the velocity field. The higher…
The global existence issue in critical regularity spaces for the full Navier-Stokes equationssatisfied by compressible viscous and heat-conductive gases has been first addressed in \cite{D2}, then recently extended to the general $L^p$ framework in \cite{DH}.In the present work, we establish decay estimates for the global solutions constructed in \cite{DH}, under anadditional mild integrability assumption that is satisfied if the low frequencies of the initial data are in $L^{p/2}({\mathbb{R}}^d).$As a by-product we recover in dimension three the classical decay rate $t^{-\frac34}$ for $t\to+\…
We study the spectral stability of roll-wave solutions of the viscous St. Venant equations modeling inclined shallow-water flow, both at onset in the small-Froude number or "weakly unstable" limit $F\to 2^+$ and for general values of the Froude number $F$, including the limit $F\to +\infty$. In the former, $F\to 2^+$, limit, the shallow water equations are formally approximated by a Korteweg de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KdV-KS) equation that is a singular perturbation of the standard Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation modeling horizontal shallow water flow. Our main analytical result is to rig…
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of Navier-Stokes equations for compressible viscous heat-conductive fluids with far-field vacuum at infinity in $\R^3$. For less regular data and weaker compatibility condition than those proposed by Cho-Kim \cite{CK2006}, we first prove the existence of local-in-time solutions belonging to a larger class of functions in which the uniqueness can be shown to hold. The local solution is in fact a classical one away from the initial time, provided the initial density is regular. We also establish the global well-posedness of classical solutions with…
We study the asymptotic spatial behavior of the vorticity field, $ω(x,t)$, associated to a time-periodic Navier-Stokes flow past a body, $\mathscr B$, in the class of weak solutions satisfying a Serrin-like condition. We show that, outside the wake region, $\mathcal R$, $ω$ decays pointwise at an exponential rate, uniformly in time. Moreover, denoting by $\barω$ its time-average over a period and by $ω_P:=ω-\barω$ its purely periodic component, we prove that inside $\mathcal R$, $\barω$ has the same algebraic decay as that known for the associated steady-state problem, whereas $ω_P$ decays eve…
We consider the free boundary problem for two layers of immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluid in a uniform gravitational field, lying above a general rigid bottom in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. We establish the global well-posedness of the problem both with and without surface tension. We prove that without surface tension the solution decays to the equilibrium state at an almost exponential rate; with surface tension, we show that the solution decays at an exponential rate. Our results include the case in which a heavier fluid lies above a lighter one, provided that…
In this paper we analyze the decay and the growth for large time of weak and strong solutions to the three-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system. We show that generic solutions blow up as $t\to\infty$ in the sense that the energy and the $L^p$-norms of the velocity field grow to infinity for large time, for $1\le p<3$. In the case of strong solutions we provide sharp estimates both from above and from below and explicit asymptotic profiles. We also show that solutions arising from $(u_0,θ_0)$ with zero-mean for the initial temperature $θ_0$ have a special behavior as $|x|$ or $t$ tends to infi…
We extend the weak-strong uniqueness principle to general models of compressible viscous fluids near/on the vacuum. In particular, the physically relevant case of positive density with polynomial decay at infinity is considered.
Global spherically symmetric classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data of the multi-dimensional non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations
Consider a viscous fluid of finite depth below the air. In the absence of the surface tension effect at the air-fluid interface, the long time behavior of a free surface with small amplitude has been an intriguing question since the work of Beale \cite{beale_1}. In this monograph, we develop a new mathematical framework to resolve this question. If the free interface is horizontally infinite, we establish that it decays to a flat surface at an algebraic rate. On the other hand, if the free interface is periodic, we establish that it decays at an almost exponential rate, i.e. at an arbitrarily …
In this paper, we first address the space-time decay properties for higher order derivatives of strong solutions to the Boussinesq system in the usual Sobolev space. The decay rates obtained here are optimal. The proof is based on a parabolic interpolation inequality, bootstrap argument and some weighted estimates. Secondly, we present a new solution integration formula for the Boussinesq system, which will be employed to establish the existence of strong solutions in scaling invariant function spaces. We further investigate the asymptotic profiles and decay properties of these strong solution…
In this paper, we investigate the direct and indirect stability of locally coupled wave equations with local viscous damping on cylindrical and non-regular domains without any geometric control condition. If only one equation is damped, we prove that the energy of our system decays polynomially with the rate $t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ if the two waves have the same speed of propagation, and with rate $t^{-\frac{1}{3}}$ if the two waves do not propagate at the same speed. Otherwise, in case of two damped equations, we prove a polynomial energy decay rate of order $t^{-1}$.
We consider a viscous incompressible fluid below the air and above a fixed bottom. The fluid dynamics is governed by the gravity-driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the free surface. The global well-posedness and long-time behavior of solutions near equilibrium have been intriguing questions since Beale (\emph{Comm. Pure Appl. Math.} 34 (1981), no. 3, 359--392). It had been thought that certain low frequency assumption of the initial data is needed to derive an integrable decay rate of the velocity so that the global solutions in $3D…
In this paper we deal with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a friction term in one dimension on an interval. We study the exact controllability properties of this equation with general initial condition when the boundary control is acting at both endpoints of the interval. Inspired by the work of Guerrero and Imanuvilov in \cite{GI} on the viscous Burger equation, we prove by choosing irrotational data and using the notion of effective velocity developed in \cite{cpde,cras} that the exact global controllability result does not hold for any time $T$.
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of the composite wave consisting of planar rarefaction and planar contact waves for viscous conservation laws with degenerate flux under multi-dimensional periodic perturbations. To the level of our knowledge, it is the first stability result of the composite wave for conservation laws in several dimensions. Moreover, the perturbations studied in the present paper are periodic, which keep constantly oscillating at infinity. Suitable ansatz is constructed to overcome the difficulty caused by this kind of perturbation and delicate estimates are don…
In this paper, we consider an incompressible viscous flow without surface tension in a finite-depth domain of three dimensions, with free top boundary and fixed bottom boundary. This system is governed by a Naiver-Stokes equation in above moving domain and a transport equation for the top boundary. Traditionally, we consider this problem in Lagrangian coordinates with perturbed linear form. In the series of papers [1], [2] and [3], I. Tice and Y. Guo introduced a new framework using geometric structure in Eulerian coordinates to study both local and global wellposedness of this system. Followi…
We consider the motion of a point mass in a one-dimensional viscous compressible barotropic fluid. The fluid--point mass system is governed by the barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations and Newton's equation of motion. Our main result concerns the long-time behavior of the fluid and the point mass, and it gives pointwise convergence estimates of the volume ratio and the velocity of the fluid to their equilibrium values. As a corollary, it is shown that the velocity $V(t)$ of the point mass satisfies a decay estimate $|V(t)|=O(t^{-3/2})$ --- a faster decay compared to $t^{-1/2}$ known…
