We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The convergence holds in a weak topology. However, this limit satisfies some stability estimates measured by the relative entropy with respect to an entropy shock. In particular, our result provides the uniqueness of entropy shocks to the shallow water equation in a class of inviscid limits of solutions to the viscous shallow water equations.
We obtain existence and conormal Sobolev regularity of strong solutions to the 3D compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system on the half-space with a Navier boundary condition, over a time that is uniform with respect to the viscosity parameters when these are small. These solutions then converge globally and strongly in $L^2$ towards the solution of the compressible isentropic Euler system when the viscosity parameters go to zero.
We prove weak-strong uniqueness results for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system on the torus. In other words, we give conditions on a strong solution so that it is unique in a class of weak solutions. Known weak-strong uniqueness results are improved. Classical uniqueness results for this equation follow naturally.
Consider the linear stability of the three dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}$. We prove the enhanced dissipation phenomenon for the linearized isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations around the Couette flow $(y, 0, 0)^\top$. Moreover, the lift-up phenomenon is also shown in this paper. Compared with the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations [Ann. of Math.,185(2017), 541--608], the lift-up effect here is stronger due to the loss of the incompressible condition.
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity, to the isentropic compressible Euler equations. Based on several new uniform estimates to the viscous systems, in addition to the framework recently established by G. Chen and M. Perepelitsa, we justify that the finite energy solution of the isentropic compressible Euler equations for a large class of initial data can be obtained as the inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations even when the viscosity depends on the density.
In the recent paper, the global-in-time inviscid limit of the three-dimensional (3D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is considered. First, when viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of density's power ($(ρ^ε)^δ$ with $δ>1$), for regular solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem, via introducing one "quasi-symmetric hyperbolic"--"degenerate elliptic" coupled structure to control the behavior of the velocity near the vacuum, we establish the uniform energy estimates for the local sound speed in $H^3$ and $(ρ^ε)^{\frac{δ-1}{2}}$ in $H^2$ with respect to the v…
In this paper, we are concerned with the system of the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force in three space dimensions. The global existence of solutions near constant steady states is established, and the time-decay rates of perturbed solutions are obtained. The proof for existence is due to the classical energy method, and the investigation of large-time behavior is based on the linearized analysis of the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations and the electromagnetic part for the linearized isentropic Navier-S…
The existence of dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations was established in this paper. This notion was inspired by the concept of dissipative solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of Lions (\cite{Lions-1996}, Section 4.4). Our method is to recover such solutions by passing to the limits from approximated solutions, thanks to compactness argument.
This paper concerns the low Mach number limit of weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic fluids in a bounded domain with a Navier-slip boundary condition. In \cite{DGLM99}, it has been proved that if the velocity is imposed the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, as the Mach number goes to 0, the velocity of the compressible flow converges strongly in $L^2$ under the geometrical assumption (H) on the domain. We justify the same strong convergence when the slip length in the Navier condition is the reciprocal of the square root of the Mach number.
In this paper, the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is proved with the initial date being allowed to have vacuum. The main contribution of this paper is that the well-posedness is established without assuming any compatibility condition on the initial data, which was widely used before in many literatures concerning the well-posedness of compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum.
Motivated by \cite{CG10,CZ6}, we prove the global existence of solutions to the two-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with smooth initial data which are slowly varying in one direction and with initial density being away from vacuum. In particular, we present examples of initial data which generate unique global smooth solutions to 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and with initial data which are neither small perturbation of some constant equilibrium state nor of small energy.

For the physical vacuum free boundary problem with the sound speed being $C^{{1}/{2}}$-H$\ddot{\rm o}$lder continuous near vacuum boundaries of the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations with damping, the global existence of spherically symmetric smooth solutions is proved, which are shown to converge to Barenblatt self-similar solutions of the porous media equation with the same total masses when initial data are small perturbations of Barenblatt solutions. The pointwise convergence with a rate of density, the convergence rate of velocity in supreme norm and the precise expanding rate…
In this paper, the large time behavior of solutions of 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves is stable for the Cauchy problem provided that the two waves are initially far away from each other. Moreover the strengths of two waves could be arbitrarily large.
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic dynamics with real viscosity on a bounded interval. In the case of boundary data defining an admissible shock wave for the corresponding unviscous hyperbolic system, we determine a scalar differential equation describing the motion of the internal transition layer. In particular, for small viscosity, the velocity of the motion is exponentially small. The approach is based on the construction of a one-parameter manifold of approximate solutions and on an appropriate projection of the evolution of the complete Navier-Stokes syst…
We prove the global-in-time existence of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations of compressible isentropic flow in three space dimensions with adiabatic exponent $γ\ge1$. Initial data and solutions are small in $L^2$ around a non-constant steady state with densities being positive and essentially bounded. No smallness assumption is imposed on the external forces when $γ=1$. A great deal of information about partial regularity and large-time behavior is obtained.
In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect terms in an exterior domain with Navier-slip boundary condition and with far-field vacuum. This problem is related to the motion of the compressible viscous flow past a rotating obstacle. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, provided that the initial mass is small. The initial data and the angular velocity of the obstacle are allowed to have large oscillations.
The concentration phenomenon of the kinetic energy, $ρ|\mathbf{u}|^2$, associated to isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, is addressed in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n=2,3$ and the adiabatic constant $γ\in[1,\frac{n}{2}]$. Except a space-time set with Hausdorff dimension less than or equal to $Γ(n)+1$ with $$ Γ(n)=\max\left\{γ(n), n-\frac{nγ}{γ(n)+1}\right\}\quad\textrm{and}\quadγ(n)=\frac{n(n-1)-nγ}{n-γ},$$ no concentration phenomenon occurs.
In this paper, we are concerned with the minimal regularity of both the density and the velocity for the weak solutions keeping energy equality in the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The energy equality criteria without upper bound of the density are established. Almost all previous corresponding results requires $ρ\in L^{\infty}(0,T;L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^{d}))$.
We prove existence and asymptotic stability of the stationary solution for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic gas dynamics with a density dependent diffusion in a bounded interval. We present the necessary conditions to be imposed on the boundary data which ensure existence and uniqueness of the steady state, and we subsequent investigate its stability properties by means of the construction of a suitable Lyapunov functional for the system. The Saint-Venant system, modeling the dynamics of a shallow compressible fluid, fits into this general framework.
We study convergence of a mixed finite element finite volume numerical scheme for the isentropic Navier-Stokes system under the full range of the adiabatic exponent. We establish suitable stability and consistency estimates and show that the Young measure generated by numerical solutions represents a dissipative measure-valued solutions of the limit system. In particular, using the recently established weak{strong uniqueness principle in the class of dissipative measure-valued solutions we show that the numerical solutions converge strongly to a strong solutions of the limit system as long as …
In this paper, we consider the global well-posedness problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space $\R^N$ with $N\ge2$. In order to better reflect the characteristics of the dispersion equation, we make full use of the role of the frequency on the integrability and regularity of the solution, and prove that the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations admit global solutions when the initial data are close to a stable equilibrium in the sense of suitable hybrid Besov norm. As a consequence, the initial velocity with arbitrary $\dot{B}^{\fr{N}{2}-1}_{2,…
In this paper, under the hypothesis that $ρ$ is upper bounded, we construct a Lyapunov functional for the multidimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations and show that the weak solutions decay exponentially to the equilibrium state in $L^2$ norm. This can be regarded as a generalization of Matsumura and Nishida's results in 1982, since our analysis is done in the framework of Lions 1998 and Feireisl et al. 2001, the higher regularity of $(ρ, u)$ and the uniformly positive lower bound of $ρ$ are not necessary in our analysis and vacuum may be admitted. Indeed, the upper bound o…
It is well-known that a Leray-Hopf weak solution in $L^4 (0,T; L^4(Ω))$ for the incompressible Navier-Stokes system is persistence of energy due to Lions [19]. In this paper, it is shown that Lions's condition for energy balance is also valid for the weak solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations allowing vacuum under suitable integrability conditions on the density and its derivative. This allows us to establish various sufficient conditions implying energy equality for the compressible flow as well as the non-homogenous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. This is a…
Global weak solutions and incompressible limit to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 2D bounded domains with ripped density and large initial data
Regularity and uniqueness of weak solution of the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is proven for small time in dimension $N=2,3$ under periodic boundary conditions. In this paper, the initial density is not required to have a positive lower bound and the pressure law is assumed to satisfy a condition that reduces to $γ>1$ when $N=2,3$ and $P(ρ)=aρ^γ$. In a second part we prove a condition of blow-up in slightly subcritical initial data when $ρ\in L^{\infty}$. We finish by proving that weak solutions in $\T^{N}$ turn out to be smooth as long as the density remains bounded in $L^{…
Global weak solutions and incompressible limit to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half-plane with ripped density and large initial data
It is known that smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity may lose their regularities in finite time in the presence of vacuum. However, in spite of the recent progress on such blowup phenomenon, it remain to give a possible blowup mechanism. In this paper, we present a simple continuation principle for such system, which asserts that the concentration of the density or the temperature occurs in finite time for a large class of smooth initial data, which is responsible for the breakdown of classical solutions. It also give an affirmative answer t…
In this paper, the asymptotic-time behavior of solutions to an initial boundary value problem in the half space for 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that the viscous shock wave is stable for an impermeable wall problem where the velocity is zero on the boundary provided that the shock wave is initially far away from the boundary. Moreover, the strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. This work essentially improves the result of [A. Matsumura, M. Mei, Convergence to travelling fronts of solutions of the p-system with viscosity in the presence of a bound…

We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…
In this note we consider the inviscid limit for the 3D Boussinesq equations without diffusion, under slip boundary conditions of Navier's type. We first study more closely the Navier-Stokes equations, to better understand the problem. The role of the initial data is also emphasized in connection with the vanishing viscosity limit.
For the three-dimensional vacuum free boundary problem with physical singularity that the sound speed is $C^{ {1}/{2}}$-H$\ddot{\rm o}$lder continuous across the vacuum boundary of the compressible Euler equations with damping, without any symmetry assumptions, we prove the almost global existence of smooth solutions when the initial data are small perturbations of the Barenblatt self-similar solutions to the corresponding porous media equations simplified via Darcy's law. It is proved that if the initial perturbation is of the size of $ε$, then the existing time for smooth solutions is at lea…
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular limit for the small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on the three dimensional Euclidean space. The Euler-Boussinesq approximation is identified as the limit system.
IIn the paper, we consider the inviscid, incompressible and semiclassical limits limits of the barotropic quantum Navier-Stokes equations of compressible flows in a periodic domain. We show that the limit solutions satisfy the incompressible Euler system based on the relative entropy inequality and on the detailed analysis for general initial data. The rate of convergence is estimated in terms of the Mach number.
We address the inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with initial datum that is analytic only close to the boundary of the domain, and has finite Sobolev regularity in the complement. We prove that for such data the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations converges in the vanishing viscosity limit to the solution of the Euler equation, on a constant time interval.
We prove the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for data that are analytic only near the boundary in a general two-dimensional bounded domain. Our proof is direct, using the vorticity formulation with a nonlocal boundary condition, the explicit semigroup of the linear Stokes problem near the flatten boundary, and the standard wellposedness theory of Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces away from the boundary.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit problem for the 3-dimensional (3D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a general bounded smooth domain of $R^3$ with the generalized Navier-slip boundary conditions (\ref{VSg}). Some uniform estimates on rates of convergence in $C([0,T],L^2(Ω))$ and $C([0,T],H^1(Ω))$ of the solutions to the corresponding solutions of the idea Euler equations with the standard slip boundary condition are obtained.
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscous coefficient in the presence of the shock wave. Given a shock wave to the corresponding Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the shock wave as the viscosity tends to zero. The proof is given by an elementary energy method.
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
We study the asymptotic stability of a planar rarefaction wave (in the $ x_1 $- direction) for the 3-d isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, where the initial perturbation is periodic on the torus $ \mathbb{T}^3 $ with zero average. To solve this Cauchy problem in which the initial data is periodic with respect to only $ x_2 $ and $ x_3 $ but not to $ x_1, $ we construct a suitable ansatz carrying the oscillations of the solution in the $ x_1 $- direction, but remaining to be periodic in the transverse $ x_2 $- and $ x_3 $- directions. In such a way, the difference between the ansatz and the sol…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a barotropic fluid with density dependent viscosity confined in a three-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$. We show the convergence of the weak solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system to the strong solution to the compressible Euler system when the viscosity and the damping coefficients tend to zero.
We consider inviscid flow with isentropic coefficient greater than one. For flow along smooth infinite protruding corners we attempt to impose a nonzero limit for velocity at infinity at the upstream wall. We prove that the problem does not have any irrotational uniformly subsonic solutions, whereas rotational flows do exist. This can be considered a case of a slip-condition solid "generating" vorticity in inviscid flow.
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is considered. When viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of the density's power ($ρ^δ$ with $0<δ<1$), based on some analysis of the nonlinear structure of this system, we identify the class of initial data admitting a local regular solution with far field vacuum and finite energy in some inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces by introducing some new variables and initial compatibility conditions, which solves an open problem of degenerate viscous flow partially mentioned b…
The derivation of different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) from an isentropic Navier-Stokes/Euler system is systematized using the Hilbert type expansion in the corresponding perturbative and (for the KZK and NPE equations) paraxial ansatz . The use of small, to compare to the constant state perturbations, correctors allows to obtain the approximation results for the solutions of these models and to estimate the time during which they keep clos…
The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearl…
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities is considered. By introducing some new variables and making use of the "quasi-symmetric hyperbolic"-"degenerate elliptic" coupled structure to control the behavior of the fluid velocity, we prove the global-in-time well-posedness of regular solutions with vacuum for a class of smooth initial data that are of small density but possibly large velocities. Here the initial mass density is required to decay to zero in the far field, and the spectrum of the Ja…
A class of differentiable solutions is proved for the isentropic Euler equations in two and three space dimensions. The solutions are explicitly given in terms of solutions to inviscid Burgers equations, and several directions of propagation. The relative orientation of the directions is critical. Within the directional constraints, the Burgers solutions are arbitrary. The several velocities add, and the pressures combine nonlinearly. These solutions cannot exist beyond the time when shocks develop in any of the Burgers solutions.
We consider the vanishing viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that the inviscid limit holds in the energy norm if the product of the components of the Navier-Stokes solutions are equicontinuous at $x_2=0$. A sufficient condition for this to hold is that the tangential Navier-Stokes velocity remains uniformly bounded and has a uniformly integrable tangential gradient near the boundary.
In this paper, we establish the short time inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with critical Navier-slip boundary conditions for analytic data on half-space, a boundary condition that is physically derived from the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations with the Maxwell boundary conditions. The analysis is built upon the recent framework developed by T. T. Nguyen and T. T. Nguyen (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 230(3):1103-1129, 2018.) in the case of the classical no-slip boundary conditions. The novelty in this paper is to derive the precise pointwise bound on the …
Building on work of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun in the shock wave case, we study stability of compressive, or "shock-like", boundary layers of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with gamma-law pressure by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations. Our results indicate stability for gamma in the interval [1, 3] for all compressive boundary-layers, independent of amplitude, save for inflow layers in the characteristic limit (not treated). Expansive inflow boundary-layers have been shown to be stable for all amplitudes b…
In [1], T. Clopeau, A. Mikelić, and R. Robert studied the inviscid limit of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain subject to Navier friction-type boundary conditions. They proved that the inviscid limit satisfies the incompressible Euler equations and their result ultimately includes flows generated by bounded initial vorticities. Our purpose in this article is to adapt and, to some extent, simplify their argument in order to include $p$-th power integrable initial vorticities, with $p>2$. This note is devoted to the linear stability of the Couette flow for the non-isentropic compressible Euler equations in a domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. Exploiting the several conservation laws originated from the special structure of the linear system, we obtain a Lyapunov type instability for the density, the temperature, the compressible part of the velocity field, and also obtain an inviscid damping for the incompressible part of the velocity field.
