We present a streamlined account of recent developments in the stability theory for planar viscous shock waves, with an emphasis on applications to physical models with ``real,'' or partial viscosity. The main result is the establishment of necessary, or ``weak'', and sufficient, or ``strong'', conditions for nonlinear stability analogous to those established by Majda [Ma.1--3] in the inviscid case but (generically) separated by a codimension-one set in parameter space rather than an open set as in the inviscid case. The importance of codimension one is that transition between nonlinear stability and instability is thereby determined, lying on the boundary set between the open regions of strong stability and strong instability (the latter defined as failure of weak stability). Strong stability holds always for small-amplitude shocks of classical ``Lax'' type [PZ.1--2, FreS]; for large-amplitude shocks, however, strong instability may occur [ZS, Z.3].
We establish the vanishing viscosity limit of viscous Burgers-Vlasov equations for one dimensional kinetic model about interactions between a viscous fluid and dispersed particles by using compensated compactness technique and the evolution of level sets arguments. The limit we obtained is exactly a finite-energy weak solution to the inviscid equations.
We consider the evolutionary MHD systems, and study the the regularity and vanishing viscosity limit of the 3-D viscous system in a class of bounded domains with a slip boundary condition. We derive the convergence is in H^{2k+1}, for k>0, if the initial date holds some sufficient conditions.
The current paper establishes the global well-posedness issue for the full viscous MHD equations in the axisymmetric setting. Global solutions are obtained in critical Besov spaces uniformly to the viscosity when the resistivity is fixed in the spirit of \cite{AKH,Hassainia,hz0}. Furthermore, strong convergence in the resolution spaces with a rate of convergence is also studied.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We show that, for the non-viscous case, if the strengths of the wave patterns and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global-in-time solution exists and asymptotically tends toward the corresponding the viscous contact wave or the composition of a viscous contact wave with rarefaction waves determined by the initial condition, which extended the results by Huang-Li-Matsumura[13], where they treated the viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas.
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
We use Velocity Averaging lemma to show that the almost everywhere limit of quasilinear viscous approximations is the unique entropy solution (in the sense of {\it F. Otto}) of the corresponding scalar conservation laws on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where the viscous term is of the form $\varepsilon\,div\left(B(u^{\varepsilon})\nabla u^{\varepsilon}\right)$ and $B\geq 0$.
In this paper, we consider two classes of free boundary value problems of a viscous two-phase liquid-gas model relevant to the flow in wells and pipelines with mass-dependent viscosity coefficient. The liquid is treated as an incompressible fluid whereas the gas is assumed to be polytropic. We obtain the asymptotic behavior and decay rates of the mass functions $n(x,t)$,\$m(x,t)$ when the initial masses are assumed to be connected to vacuum both discontinuously and continuously, which improves the corresponding result about Navier-Stokes equations in \cite{Zhu}.
Recently I. Capuzzo Dolcetta, F. Leoni and A. Porretta obtain a very surprising regularity result for fully nonlinear, superquadratic, elliptic equations by showing that viscosity subsolutions of such equations are locally Hölder continuous, and even globally if the boundary of the domain is regular enough. The aim of this paper is to provide a simplified proof of their results, together with an interpretation of the regularity phenomena, some extensions and various applications.
Consider the dynamics of a layer of viscous incompressible fluid under the influence of gravity. The upper boundary is a free boundary with the effect of surface tension taken into account, and the lower boundary is a fixed boundary on which the Navier-slip condition is imposed. It is proved that there is a uniform time interval on which the estimates independent of both viscosity and surface tension coefficients of the solution can be established. This then allows one to justify the vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits by the strong compactness argument. In the presence of surface t…
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscous coefficient in the presence of the shock wave. Given a shock wave to the corresponding Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the shock wave as the viscosity tends to zero. The proof is given by an elementary energy method.
We study the vanishing viscosity limit of the one-dimensional Burgers equation near nondegenerate shock formation. We develop a matched asymptotic expansion that describes small-viscosity solutions to arbitrary order up to the moment the first shock forms. The inner part of this expansion has a novel structure based on a fractional spacetime Taylor series for the inviscid solution. We obtain sharp vanishing viscosity rates in a variety of norms, including $L^\infty$. Comparable prior results break down in the vicinity of shock formation. We partially fill this gap.
We consider viscous free-boundary magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) under vacuum in $\mathbb{R}^3$, especially when vacuum magnetic field is identically zero. It is a central problem in mathematics to perform vanishing viscosity limit to get a solution of hyperbolic inviscid system. However, boundary layer behavior happens near the free-boundary, so existence time $T^{\varepsilon} \rightarrow 0$ as kinematic viscosity $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$ in standard sobolev space. Inspired by \cite{NMFR1}, we use sobolev conormal space to derive uniform regularity in viscosity $\varepsilon$. Finally, we get a s…
Well-posedness is proved for the stochastic viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and Wiener multiplicative noise. The double-well potential is allowed to have any growth at infinity (in particular, also super-polynomial) provided that it is everywhere defined on the real line. A vanishing viscosity argument is carried out and the convergence of the solutions to the ones of the pure Cahn-Hilliard equation is shown. Some refined regularity results are also deduced for both the viscous and the non-viscous case.
Given a strictly hyperbolic, genuinely nonlinear system of conservation laws, we prove the a priori bound $\big\|u(t,\cdot)-u^\ve(t,\cdot)\big\|_{Ł^1}= Ø(1)(1+t)\cdot \sqrt\ve|\ln\ve|$ on the distance between an exact BV solution $u$ and a viscous approximation $u^\ve$, letting the viscosity coefficient $\ve\to 0$. In the proof, starting from $u$ we construct an approximation of the viscous solution $u^\ve$ by taking a mollification $u*ϕ_{\strut \sqrt\ve}$ and inserting viscous shock profiles at the locations of finitely many large shocks, for each fixed $\ve$. Error estimates are then obtaine…
The paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional degenerate viscous lake equations when the Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the impermeable boundary of a simply connected bounded regular domain. When the initial vorticity is in the Lebesgue space $L^q$ with $2<q\le\infty$, we show the degenerate viscous lake equations possess a unique global solution and the solution converges to a corresponding weak solution of the inviscid lake equations. In the special case when the vorticity is in $L^\infty$, an explicit convergence rate is obtained.
Motivated by radiation hydrodynamics, we analyse a 2x2 system consisting of a one-dimensional viscous conservation law with strictly convex flux -- the viscous Burgers' equation being a paradigmatic example -- coupled with an elliptic equation, named viscous Hamer-type system. In the regime of small viscosity and for large shocks, namely when the profile of the corresponding underlying inviscid model undergoes a discontinuity -- usually called sub-shock -- it is proved the existence of a smooth propagating front, regularising the jump of the corresponding inviscid equation. The proof is based …
Several mechanical systems are modeled by the static momentum balance for the displacement $u$ coupled with a rate-independent flow rule for some internal variable $z$. We consider a class of abstract systems of ODEs which have the same structure, albeit in a finite-dimensional setting, and regularize both the static equation and the rate-independent flow rule by adding viscous dissipation terms with coefficients $\varepsilon^α$ and $\varepsilon$, where $0<\varepsilon \ll 1$ and $α>0$ is a fixed parameter. Therefore for $α\neq 1$ $u$ and $z$ have different relaxation rates. We address the vani…
We study the long-time behavior of the unique viscosity solution $u$ of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Equation $u_t-Δu + |Du|^m = f\hbox{in }Ω\times (0,+\infty)$ with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$. We mainly focus on the superquadratic case ($m>2$) and consider the Dirichlet conditions in the generalized viscosity sense. Under rather natural assumptions on $f,$ the initial and boundary data, we connect the problem studied to its associated stationary generalized Dirichlet problem on one hand and to a stationary problem with a state c…
In this article, we present some explicit solutions showing rough dependence upon initial data. We also studies viscous effects. An extension of a theorem of Cauchy to the viscous case is also presented.
A vanishing viscosity method is formulated for two-dimensional transonic steady irrotational compressible fluid flows with adiabatic constant $γ\in [1,3)$. This formulation allows a family of invariant regions in the phase plane for the corresponding viscous problem, which implies an upper bound uniformly away from cavitation for the viscous approximate velocity fields. Mathematical entropy pairs are constructed through the Loewner-Morawetz relation by entropy generators governed by a generalized Tricomi equation of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type, and the corresponding entropy dissipation meas…
A general class of linear advective PDEs, whose leading order term is of viscous dissipative type, is considered. It is proved that beyond the limit of the essential spectrum of the underlying inviscid operator, the eigenvalues of the viscous operator, in the limit of vanishing viscosity, converge precisely to those of the inviscid operator. The general class of PDEs includes the equations of incompressible fluid dynamics. Hence eigenvalues of the Navier-Stokes operator converge in the inviscid limit to the eigenvalues of the Euler operator beyond the essential spectrum.
