We establish pointwise bounds for the Green function and consequent linearized stability for multidimensional planar relaxation shocks of general relaxation systems whose equilibrium model is scalar, under the necessary assumption of spectral stability. Moreover, we obtain nonlinear $L^{2}$ asymptotic behavior/sharp decay rate of perturbed weak shocks of general simultaneously symmetrizable relaxation systems, under small $L^{1}\cap H^{[d/2]+3}$ perturbations with first moment in the normal direction to the front.
The Evans function is a powerful tool for the stability analysis of viscous shock profiles; zeros of this function carry stability information. In the one-dimensional case, it is typical to compute the Evans function using Goodman's integrated coordinates [G1]; this device facilitates the search for zeros of the Evans function by winding number arguments. Although integrated coordinates are not available in the multidimensional case, we show here that there is a choice of coordinates which gives similar advantages.
Although local existence of multidimensional shock waves has been established in some fundamental references, there are few results on the global existence of those waves except the ones for the unsteady potential flow equations in n-dimensional spaces (n > 4) or in special unbounded space-time domains with non-physical boundary conditions. In this paper, we are concerned with both the local and global multidimensional conic shock wave problem for the unsteady potential flow equations when a pointed piston (i.e., the piston degenerates into a single point at the initial time) or an explosive w…
Extending our earlier work on Lax-type shocks of systems of conservation laws, we establish existence and stability of curved multidimensional shock fronts in the vanishing viscosity limit for general Lax- or undercompressive-type shock waves of nonconservative hyperbolic systems with parabolic regularization. The hyperbolic equations may be of variable multiplicity and the parabolic regularization may be of ``real'', or partially parabolic, type. We prove an existence result for inviscid nonconservative shocks that extends to multidimensional shocks a one-dimensional result of X. Lin proved b…
Extending results of Humpherys-Lyng-Zumbrun in the one-dimensional case, we use a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans-function computations to examine the multidimensional stability of planar Navier--Stokes shocks across the full range of shock amplitudes, including the infinite-amplitude limit, for monatomic or diatomic ideal gas equations of state and viscosity and heat conduction coefficients $μ$, $μ+η$, and $ν=κ/c_v$ in the physical ratios predicted by statistical mechanics, with Mach number $M>1.035$. Our results indicate unconditional stability within the paramete…
This paper deals with the rigorous study of the diffusive stress relaxation in the multidimensional system arising in the mathematical modeling of viscoelastic materials. The control of an appropriate high order energy shall lead to the proof of that limit in Sobolev space. It is shown also as the same result can be obtained in terms of relative modulate energies.
We are concerned with the stability of multidimensional (M-D) transonic shocks in steady supersonic flow past multidimensional wedges. One of our motivations is that the global stability issue for the M-D case is much more sensitive than that for the 2-D case, which requires more careful rigorous mathematical analysis. In this paper, we develop a nonlinear approach and employ it to establish the stability of weak shock solutions containing a transonic shock-front for potential flow with respect to the M-D perturbation of the wedge boundary in appropriate function spaces. To achieve this, we fi…
In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first order conservation law $\partial_t u+\partial_x F(u)+\partial_y G(u)=0$ with smooth initial data $u_0(x,y)$. It is well-known that the smooth solution $u$ will blow up on the time $T^*=-\frac{1}{\min{H(ξ,η)}}$ when $\min{H(ξ,η})<0$ holds for $H(ξ,η)=\partial_ξ(F'(u_0(ξ,η)))+\partial_η(G'(u_0(ξ,η)))$, more precisely, only the first order derivatives $\nabla_{t,x,y}u$ blow up on $t=T^*$ meanwhile $u$ itself is still continuous until $t=T^*$. Under the generic nondegenerate condition…
We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.
We establish existence, uniqueness and stability of transonic shocks for steady compressible non-isentropic potential flow system in a multidimensional divergent nozzle with an arbitrary smooth cross-section, for a prescribed exit pressure. The proof is based on solving a free boundary problem for a system of partial differential equations consisting of an elliptic equation and a transport equation. In the process, we obtain unique solvability for a class of transport equations with velocity fields of weak regularity(non-Lipschitz), an infinite dimensional weak implicit mapping theorem which d…
We are concerned with free boundary problems arising from the analysis of multidimensional transonic shock waves for the Euler equations in compressible fluid dynamics. In this expository paper, we survey some recent developments in the analysis of multidimensional transonic shock waves and corresponding free boundary problems for the compressible Euler equations and related nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of mixed type. The nonlinear PDEs under our analysis include the steady Euler equations for potential flow, the steady full Euler equations, the unsteady Euler equations for …
In this paper, we consider the large time asymptotic nonlinear stability of a superposition of shock waves with contact discontinuities for the one dimensional Jin-Xin relaxation system with small initial perturbations, provided that the strengths of waves are small with the same order. The results are obtained by elementary weighted energy estimates based on the underlying wave structure and an estimate on the heat equation.
We establish sharp pointwise Green's function bounds and consequent linearized and nonlinear stability for smooth traveling front solutions, or relaxation shocks, of general hyperbolic relaxation systems of dissipative type, under the necessary assumptions ([G,Z.1,Z.4]) of spectral stability, i.e., stable point spectrum of the linearized operator about the wave, and hyperbolic stability of the corresponding ideal shock of the associated equilibrium system. This yields, in particular, nonlinear stability of weak relaxation shocks of the discrete kinetic Jin--Xin and Broadwell models. The techni…
We establish existence with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation of small-amplitude shock profiles of a class of semilinear relaxation systems including discrete velocity models obtained from Boltzmann and other kinetic equations. Our method of analysis is based on the macro--micro decomposition introduced by Liu and Yu for the study of Boltzmann profiles, but applied to the stationary rather than the time-evolutionary equations. This yields a simple proof by contraction mapping in weighted $H^s$ spaces.
We establish existence with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation of small-amplitude quasilinear relaxation shocks in the general case that the profile ODE may become degenerate. Our method of analysis follows the general approach used by Métivier and Zumbrun in the semilinear case, based on Chapman--Enskog expansion and the macro--micro decomposition of Liu and Yu. In the quasilinear case, however, we find it necessary to apply a parameter-dependent Nash-Moser iteration to close the analysis, whereas, in the semilinear case, a simple contraction-mapping argu…
When a plane shock hits a wedge head on, it experiences a reflection-diffraction process, and then a self-similar reflected shock moves outward as the original shock moves forward in time. The complexity of reflection-diffraction configurations was first reported by Ernst Mach in 1878, and experimental, computational, and asymptotic analysis has shown that various patterns of shock reflection-diffraction configurations may occur, including regular reflection and Mach reflection. In this paper we start with various shock reflection-diffraction phenomena, their fundamental scientific issues, and…
We introduce integral identities to define delta-shock wave type solutions for the multidimensional zero-pressure gas dynamics Using these integral identities, the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for delta-shocks are obtained. We derive the balance laws describing mass, momentum, and energy transport from the area outside the delta-shock wave front onto this front. These processes are going on in such a way that the total mass, momentum, and energy are conserved and at the same time mass and energy of the moving delta-shock wave front are increasing quantities. In addition, the total kinetic energ…
We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.
{\it $δ$-Shock wave type solutions} in the multidimensional system of conservation laws $$ ρ_t + \nabla\cdot(ρF(U))=0, \qquad (ρU)_t + \nabla\cdot(ρN(U))=0, \quad x\in \bR^n, $$ are studied, where $F=(F_j)$ is a given vector field, $N=(N_{jk})$ is a given tensor field, $F_j, N_{kj}:\bR^n \to \bR$, $j,k=1,...,n$; $ρ(x,t)\in \bR$, $U(x,t)\in \bR^n$. The well-known particular cases of this system are zero-pressure gas dynamics in a standard form $$ ρ_t + \nabla\cdot(ρU)=0, \quad (ρU)_t + \nabla\cdot(ρU\otimes U)=0, $$ and in the relativistic form $$ ρ_t + \nabla\cdot(ρC(U))=0, \quad (ρU)_t + \nab…
Using a combination of Kawashima- and Goodman-type energy estimates, we establish spectral stability of general small-amplitude relaxation shocks of symmetric dissipative systems. This extends previous results obtained by Plaza and Zumbrun by singular perturbation techniques under an additional technical assumption, namely, that the background equation be noncharacteristic with respect to the shock.
We introduce a dispersion approximation of weak, entropy solutions of multidimensional scalar conservation laws using variational kinetic representation, where equilibrium densities satisfy the Gibb's entropy minimization principle for a piecewise linear, convex entropy. For such solutions, we show that small scale discontinuities, measured by the entropy increments, propagate with characteristic velocities, while the large scale, shock-type discontinuities propagate with speeds close to the speeds of classical shock waves. In the zero-limit of the scale parameter, approximate solutions conver…
When an upstream steady uniform supersonic flow impinges onto a symmetric straight-sided wedge, governed by the Euler equations, there are two possible steady oblique shock configurations if the wedge angle is less than the detachment angle -- the steady weak shock with supersonic or subsonic downstream flow (determined by the wedge angle that is less or larger than the sonic angle) and the steady strong shock with subsonic downstream flow, both of which satisfy the entropy condition. The fundamental issue -- whether one or both of the steady weak and strong shocks are physically admissible so…
In this paper we consider the isentropic compressible Euler equations in two space dimensions together with particular initial data. The latter consists only of two constant states, where one state lies on the lower and the other state on the upper half plane. The aim is to investigate if there exists a unique entropy solution or if the convex integration method produces infinitely many entropy solutions. For some initial states this question has been answered by E. Feireisl and O. Kreml, and also G.-Q. Chen and J. Chen, where there exists a unique entropy solution. For other initial states E.…
The relaxation limit in critical Besov spaces for the multidimensional compressible Euler equations is considered. As the first step of this justification, the uniform (global) classical solutions to the Cauchy problem with initial data close to an equilibrium state are constructed in the Chemin-Lerner's spaces with critical regularity. Furthermore, it is shown that the density converges towards the solution to the porous medium equation, as the relaxation time tends to zero. Several important estimates are achieved, including a crucial estimate of commutator.
An initial-boundary value problem for the multidimensional type III thermoelaticity for a nonsimple material with a center of symmetry is considered. In the linear case, the well-posedness with and without Kelvin-Voigt and/or frictional damping in the elastic part as well as the lack of exponential stability in the elastically undamped case is proved. Further, a frictional damping for the elastic component is shown to lead to the exponential stability. A Cattaneo-type hyperbolic relaxation for the thermal part is introduced and the well-posedness and uniform stability under a nonlinear frictio…
Motivated by the study of conditional stability of traveling waves, we give an elementary $H^2$ center stable manifold construction for quasilinear parabolic PDE, sidestepping apparently delicate regularity issues by the combination of a carefully chosen implicit fixed-point scheme and "damping-type" $H^s$ energy estimates of a type familiar from the study of hyperbolic--parabolic and relaxation systems. An important feature of these methods is that they generalize to situations such as the hyperbolic--parabolic or relaxation case for which parabolic-type smoothing estimates are unavailable. A…
Combining work of Serre and Zumbrun, Benzoni-Gavage, Serre, and Zumbrun, and Texier and Zumbrun, we propose as a mechanism for the onset of cellular instability of viscous shock and detonation waves in a finite-cross-section duct the violation of the refined planar stability condition of Zumbrun--Serre, a viscous correction of the inviscid planar stability condition of Majda. More precisely, we show for a model problem involving flow in a rectangular duct with artificial periodic boundary conditions that transition to multidimensional instability through violation of the refined stability cond…
We give an overview of relaxation and 3d-2d passage theorems in hyperelasticity in the framework of the multidimensional calculus of variations. Some open questions are addressed. This paper, which is an expanded version of the outline-paper [AHM09b], comes as a companion to [AHM09a].
This paper studies the uniform and weak Lopatinski\uı conditions associated to classical (Lax) shock fronts of arbitrary amplitude for compressible hyperelastic materials of Hadamard type in several space dimensions. Thanks to the seminal works of Majda (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 43 (1983), no. 281; Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 41 (1983), no. 275) and Métivier (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 296 (1986), pp. 431-479; Comm. Partial Diff. Eqs. 15 (1990), no. 7, pp. 983-1028), the uniform Lopatinski\uı condition ensures the local-in-time, multidimensional, nonlinear stability of such fronts. The stability function …
In $n \geq 1$ spatial dimensions, we study the Cauchy problem for a quasilinear transport equation coupled to a quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic subsystem of a rather general type. For an open set (relative to a suitable Sobolev topology) of regular initial data that are close to the data of a simple plane wave, we give a sharp, constructive proof of shock formation in which the transport variable remains bounded but its first-order Cartesian coordinate partial derivatives blow up in finite time. Moreover, we prove that the singularity does not propagate into the symmetric hyperbolic variables…
We establish nonlinear $H^2\cap L^1 \to H^2$ stability with sharp rates of decay in $L^p$, $p\geq 2$, of general hydraulic shock profiles, with or without subshocks, of the inviscid Saint-Venant equations of shallow water flow, under the assumption of Evans-Lopatinsky stability of the associated eigenvalue problem. We verify this assumption numerically for all profiles, giving in particular the first nonlinear stability results for shock profiles with subshocks of a hyperbolic relaxation system.
We establish one-dimensional spectral stability of small amplitude viscous and relaxation shock profiles using Evans function techniques to perform a series of reductions and normal forms to reduce to the case of the scalar Burgers equation. In multidimensions, the canonical behavior is described, rather by a 2x2 viscous conservation law; this case will be treated in a companion paper by similar techniques.
We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
By reduction to a generalized Sturm Liouville problem, we establish spectral stability of hydraulic shock profiles of the Saint-Venant equations for inclined shallow-water flow, over the full parameter range of their existence, for both smooth-type profiles and discontinuous-type profiles containing subshocks. Together with work of Mascia-Zumbrun and Yang-Zumbrun, this yields linear and nonlinear $H^2\cap L^1 \to H^2$ stability with sharp rates of decay in $L^p$, $p\geq 2$, the first complete stability results for large-amplitude shock profiles of a hyperbolic relaxation system.
The critical Burgers equation $\partial_t u + u \partial_x u + Λu = 0$ is a toy model for the competition between transport and diffusion with regard to shock formation in fluids. It is well known that smooth initial data does not generate shocks in finite time. Less is known about the long-time behavior for `shock-like' initial data: $u_0 \to \pm a$ as $x \to \mp \infty$. We describe this long-time behavior in the general setting of multidimensional critical scalar conservation laws $\partial_t u + \text{div}f(u) + Λu = 0$ when the initial data has limits at infinity. The asymptotics are give…
For the three-dimensional steady non-isentropic compressible Euler system with friction, we show existence of a class of symmetric subsonic, supersonic and transonic-shock solutions in a straight duct with constant square-section. Such flows are called Fanno flow in engineering. We formulate a boundary value problem for subsonic flows, and study their stability under multidimensional small perturbations of boundary conditions. Since the subsonic Euler system is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type, this is achieved by using the framework established in [L. Liu; G. Xu; H. Yuan: Stability…
We determine the nonlinear stability of shock-fronted travelling waves arising in a reaction-nonlinear diffusion PDE, subject to a fourth-order spatial derivative term multiplied by a small parameter $\varepsilon$ that models {\it nonlocal regularization}. Motivated by the authors' recent stability analysis of shock-fronted travelling waves under viscous relaxation, our numerical analysis is guided by the observation that there is a fast-slow decomposition of the associated eigenvalue problem for the linearised operator. In particular, we observe an astonishing reduction of the complex four-di…
Combining pointwise Green's function bounds obtained in a companion paper [MZ.2] with earlier, spectral stability results obtained in [HuZ], we establish nonlinear orbital stability of small amplitude viscous shock profiles for the class of dissipative symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic systems identified by Kawashima [Kaw], notably including compressible Navier--Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, obtaining sharp rates of decay in $L^p$ with respect to small $L^1\cap H^3$ perturbations, $2\le p\le \infty$. Our analysis follows the approach introduced in [MZ.1] to treat sta…
