Shock wave theory was first studied for gas dynamics, for which shocks appear as compression waves. A shock wave is characterized as a sharp transition, even discontinuity in the flow. In fact, shocks appear in many different physical situation and represent strong nonlinearity of the physical processes. Important progresses have been made on shock wave theory in recent years. We will survey the topics for which much more remain to be made. These include the effects of reactions, dissipations and relaxation, shock waves for interacting particles and Boltzmann equation, and multi-dimensional gas flows.
In this paper we study large time behaviors toward shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations for 1-D convex scalar conservation laws. The asymptotic stabilities and decay rates of shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations are proved.
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
In this paper we discuss delta shock interaction problem for a pressureless gas dynamics system with two different ways of approaching the subject. The first one is by using shadow wave solution concept. The result of two delta shock interactions is delta shock with non-constant speed in a general case. The second one is by perturbing the system with a small pressure term. The obtained perturbed system is strictly hyperbolic and its Riemann problem is solvable. We compare a limit of a numerical wave front tracking results as small pressure term vanishes with the shadow wave solution. Key words…
Fifth-order 1D nonlinear dispersion equations are shown to admit blow-up formation of shock waves as well as rarefaction waves. The concepts of smooth deformations are applied to distinguish "entropy" shocks from smooth rarefaction waves. Single point gradient catastrophe is shown to lead to nonuniqueness after blow-up.
In this paper, we investigate and prove the nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave solutions of a scalar viscous conservation law, using the methods developed for general systems of conservation laws by Howard, Mascia, Zumbrun and others, based on instantaneous tracking of the location of the perturbed viscous shock wave. In some sense, this paper extends the treatment in a previous expository work of Zumbrun ["Instantaneous shock location ..."] on Burgers equation to the general case, giving an exposition of these methods in the simplest setting of scalar equations. In particular we give b…
We study the large-time behavior of the 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes flow perturbed from Riemann data generating a composition of two shock waves with small amplitudes. We prove that the perturbed Navier-Stokes flow converges, uniformly in space, towards a composition of two viscous shock waves as time goes to infinity, up to dynamical shifts. Especially, the strengths of the two waves can be chosen independently. This is the first result for the convergence to a composite wave of two viscous shocks with independently small amplitudes.
We describe $δ$ shock wave arising from continuous initial data in the case of triangular conservation law system arising from "generalized pressureless gas dynamics model". We use the weak asymptotic method.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves to the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional system of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We extend the results by Huang-Matsumura \cite{Huang-Matsumura} where they treated the equation of viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas. That is, even forthe non-viscous and heat-conductive case, we show that if the strengths of the viscous shock waves and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global solution in time exists and asymptotically tends toward the correspo…
A free boundary problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations is investigated. The asymptotic stability of the viscous shock wave is established under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by an elementary energy estimate.
In this paper, the large time behavior of solutions of 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves is stable for the Cauchy problem provided that the two waves are initially far away from each other. Moreover the strengths of two waves could be arbitrarily large.
Various shock and rarefaction-type similarity solutions of the third-order nonlinear dispersion equation in 1D are constructed. Blow-up of some solutions are proved by different techniques.
We illustrate in a simple setting the instantaneous shock tracking approach to stability of viscous conservation laws introduced by Howard, Mascia, and Zumbrun. This involves a choice of the definition of instanteous location of a viscous shock-- we show that this choice is time-asymptotically equivalent both to the natural choice of least-squares fit pointed out by Goodman and to a simple phase condition used by Guès, Métivier, Williams, and Zumbrun in other contexts. More generally, we show that it is asymptotically equivalent to any location defined by a localized projection
In several space dimensions, scalar shock waves between two constant states u $\pm$ are not necessarily planar. We describe them in detail. Then we prove their asymptotic stability, assuming that they are uniformly non-characteristic. Our result is conditional for a general flux, while unconditional for the multi-D Burgers equation.
In this paper, the asymptotic-time behavior of solutions to an initial boundary value problem in the half space for 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that the viscous shock wave is stable for an impermeable wall problem where the velocity is zero on the boundary provided that the shock wave is initially far away from the boundary. Moreover, the strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. This work essentially improves the result of [A. Matsumura, M. Mei, Convergence to travelling fronts of solutions of the p-system with viscosity in the presence of a bound…
The Kreiss-Majda Lopatinski determinant encodes a uniform stability property of shock wave solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in several space variables. This note deals with the Lopatinski determinant for shock waves of sufficiently small amplitude. The determinant is known to be non-zero for so-called extreme shock waves, i. e., shock waves which are asscoiated with either the slowest or the fastest mode the system displays for a given direction of propagation, if the mode is Metivier convex. The result of the note is that for arbitrarily small non-extreme shock waves assoc…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave of two viscous shocks under spatially periodic perturbations for the 1-D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is proved that as time increases, the solution approaches the background composite wave with a shift for each shock, where the shifts can be uniquely determined if both the periodic perturbations and strengths of two shocks are small. The key of the proof is to construct a suitable ansatz such that the anti-derivative method works.
This note studies classical magnetohydrodynamic shock waves in an inviscid fluidic plasma that is assumed to be a perfect conductor of heat as well as of electricity. For this mathematically prototypical material, it identifies a critical manifold in parameter space, across which slow classical MHD shock waves undergo emergence of a complex conjugate pair of unstable transverse modes. In the reflectionally symmetric case of parallel shocks, this emergence happens at the spectral value 0, and the critical manifold possesses a simple explicit algebraic representation. Results of refined numerica…
A second-order PDE is derived from Euler's equaitons under certain assumptions. It is shown that this PDE admits shock and rarefaction waves, and that a single point gradient blow-up admits a unique similarity extension after blow-up that settles uniqueness/entropy issues for such equations.
n a number of papers it was shown that there are one-dimensional systems such that they contain solutions with, so called, overcompressive singular shock waves besides the usual elementary waves (shock and rarefaction ones as well as contact discontinuities). One can see their definition for a general 2 $\times$ 2 system with fluxes linear in one of dependent variables in \cite{Ned1}. This paper is devoted to examining their interactions with themselves and elementary waves. After a discussion of systems given in a general form, a complete analysis will be given for the ion-acoustic system.
In this paper, we consider the large time asymptotic nonlinear stability of a superposition of shock waves with contact discontinuities for the one dimensional Jin-Xin relaxation system with small initial perturbations, provided that the strengths of waves are small with the same order. The results are obtained by elementary weighted energy estimates based on the underlying wave structure and an estimate on the heat equation.
We study the macroscopic limit of a chain of atoms governed by the Newton equation. It is known from the work of Blanc, Le Bris, Lions, that this limit is the solution of a nonlinear wave equation, as long as this solution remains smooth. We show, numerically and mathematically that, if the distances between particles remain bounded, it is not the case any more when there are shocks -at least for a convex nearest-neighbour interaction potential with convex derivative.
We show the vanishing viscosity limit to entropy shocks for the fractal Burgers equation in one space dimension. More precisely, we quantify the rate of convergence of the inviscid limit in $L^2$ for large initial perturbations around the entropy shock on any bounded time interval. This is the first result on the inviscid limit to entropy shock for the fractal Burgers equation with the quantified convergence, for large initial perturbations.
We identify a new type of shock wave by constructing a stationary expansion shock solution of a class of regularised shallow water equations that include the Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney (BBM) and Boussinesq equations. An expansion shock exhibits divergent characteristics, thereby contravening the classical Lax entropy condition. The persistence of the expansion shock in initial value problems is analysed and justified using matched asymptotic expansions and numerical simulations. The expansion shock's existence is traced to the presence of a non-local dispersive term in the governing equation. We es…
In this paper we consider scalar conservation laws with a convex flux. Given a stationnary shock, we provide a feedback law acting at one boundary point such that this solution is now asymptotically stable in L 1-norm in the class of entropy solution.
We give a constructive proof that coordinate transformations exist which raise the regularity of the gravitational metric tensor from $C^{0,1}$ to $C^{1,1}$ in a neighborhood of points of shock wave collision in General Relativity. The proof applies to collisions between shock waves coming from different characteristic families, in spherically symmetric spacetimes. Our result here implies that spacetime is locally inertial and corrects an error in our earlier RSPA-publication, which led us to the false conclusion that such coordinate transformations, which smooth the metric to $C^{1,1}$, canno…
We review various methods for the analysis of initial-value problems for integrable dispersive equations in the weak-dispersion or semiclassical regime. Some methods are sufficiently powerful to rigorously explain the generation of modulated wavetrains, so-called dispersive shock waves, as the result of shock formation in a limiting dispersionless system. They also provide a detailed description of the solution near caustic curves that delimit dispersive shock waves, revealing fascinating universal wave patterns.
The Cauchy problem is considered for the perturbed strictly hyperbolic 2x2 system of quasilinear equations. The unperturbed problem has a persistent solution with two discontinuity lines (shock waves). Both an asymptotics of shock waves position in the plane (x,t) and an asymptotics of the perturbed problem solution are discussed.
By using an equivalent form of the uniform Lopatinski condition for 1-shocks, we prove that the stability condition found by the energy method in [A. Morando, Y. Trakhinin, P. Trebeschi, Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, Math. Ann. 378 (2020) 1471-1504] for the rectilinear shock waves in two-dimensional flows of compressible isentropic inviscid elastic materials is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability (implying structural nonlinear stability of corresponding curved shock waves). The key point of our spectral analysis is a delicate st…
We study the two-dimensional structural stability of shock waves in a compressible isentropic inviscid elastic fluid in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous shock front solutions of the equations of compressible elastodynamics in two space dimensions. By the energy method based on a symmetrization of the wave equation and giving an a priori estimate without loss of derivatives for solutions of the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a condition sufficient for the uniform stability of rectilinear shock waves. Comparing this condition with that fo…
