Various shock and rarefaction-type similarity solutions of the third-order nonlinear dispersion equation in 1D are constructed. Blow-up of some solutions are proved by different techniques.
Fifth-order 1D nonlinear dispersion equations are shown to admit blow-up formation of shock waves as well as rarefaction waves. The concepts of smooth deformations are applied to distinguish "entropy" shocks from smooth rarefaction waves. Single point gradient catastrophe is shown to lead to nonuniqueness after blow-up.
A second-order PDE is derived from Euler's equaitons under certain assumptions. It is shown that this PDE admits shock and rarefaction waves, and that a single point gradient blow-up admits a unique similarity extension after blow-up that settles uniqueness/entropy issues for such equations.
We study the impact of the convective terms on the global solvability or finite time blow up of solutions of dissipative PDEs. We consider the model examples of 1D Burger's type equations, convective Cahn-Hilliard equation, generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and KdV type equations, we establish the following common scenario: adding sufficiently strong (in comparison with the destabilizing nonlinearity) convective terms to equation prevents the solutions from blowing up in finite time and makes the considered system globally well-posed and dissipative and for weak enough convective terms…
It is shown that fifth-order nonlinear dispersion equations from compacton theory admit shock and rarefaction waves. A self-similar gradient blow-up is shown to admit infinitely many similarity extensions beyond blow-up time, meaning principal nonuniqueness of solutions of the Cauchy problem after occurring such singularities.
The paper studies the possible blowup of the total variation for entropy weak solutions of the p-system, modeling isentropic gas dynamics. It is assumed that the density remains uniformly positive, while the initial data can have arbitrarily large total variation (measured in terms of Riemann invariants). Two main results are proved. (I) If the total variation blows up in finite time, then the solution must contain an infinite number of large shocks in a neighborhood of some point in the $t$-$x$ plane. (II) Piecewise smooth approximate solutions can be constructed whose total variation blows u…
It is shown that, for the bi-harmonic equation, an optimal regularity criterion of the vertex of typical paraboloids can be expressed in terms of Osgood-Dini integral conditions of Petrovskii's type for the heat equation derived in 1934. Some extensions of the first Fourier coefficent method to other PDEs are discussed. A survey on boundary point regularity for elliptic and parabolic PDEs is enclosed.
It is shown that third-order 1D nonlinear dispersion equations admit single point gradient catastrophe, described by blow-up-type similarity solutions. After blow-up, the solutions admit shock wave-type self-similar extensions. Snce such extensions are not unique, this implies the principle nonuniqueness of shock-type solutions and also nonexistence of any entropy-type description of proper unique solutions. A difficult free-boundary setting, with extra conditions specified on shocks, are necessary to restore uniqueness in such problems.
Some higher-order quasilinear parabolic, hyperbolic, and nonlinear dispersion equations are shown to admit various blow-up, extinction, and travelling wave solutions, which reduce to variational problems admitting countable families of compactly supported solutions.
Various formal blow-up scenarious for the Navier--Stokes equaitons in 3D are discussed. A particular interest is payed to "twistor mechanisms" based on angular logarithmic blow-up travelling waves, and to a formation of "blow-up tornado" about the singular stationary Slezkin--Landau solutions (1934--44) of a submerged jet. A survey on various related aspects of singularity analysis for nonlinear parabolic PDEs is enclosed.
We consider the large time behavior of strong solutions to a kind of stochastic Burgers equation, where the position x is perturbed by a Brownian noise. It is well known that both the rarefaction wave and viscous shock wave are time-asymptotically stable for deterministic Burgers equation since the pioneer work of A. Ilin and O. Oleinik [21] in 1964. However, the stability of these wave patterns under stochastic perturbation is not known until now. In this paper, we give a definite answer to the stability problem of the rarefaction and viscous shock waves for the 1-d stochastic Burgers equatio…
Three classes of higher-order nonlinear parabolic hyperbolic, and nonlinear dispersion equations are shown to admit exact blow-up or compacton solutions, which are induced by elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearities. Variational techniques give countable families of various compactly supported solutions with oscllatory behaviour cloase to the interfaces. Overall, the whole set of such compact patterns reveals certain chaotic properties and contains solutions of arbitrary complexity.
In this paper we study the effect of the addition of a convective term, and of the resulting increased dissipation rate, on the growth of solutions to a general class of non-linear parabolic PDEs. In particular, we show that blow-up in these models can always be prevented if the added drift has a small enough dissipation time. We also prove a general result relating the dissipation time and the effective diffusivity of stationary cellular flows, which allows us to obtain examples of simple incompressible flows with arbitrarily small dissipation times. As an application, we show that blow-up in…
In this paper we present a weighted $L_p$-theory of second-order parabolic partial differential equations defined on $C^1$ domains. The leading coefficients are assumed to be measurable in time variable and have VMO (vanishing mean oscillation) or small BMO (bounded mean oscillation) with respect to space variables, and lower order coefficients are allowed to be unbounded and to blow up near the boundary. Our BMO condition is slightly relaxed than the others in the literature.
We consider a vector-valued blow-up solution with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$ for the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension (this is a system of PDEs). We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as an m-parameter family. Then, we show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic cases. Our analysis is not just a simple adaptation of the already handled real or complex case. In particular, there is a new structure of the set a stationary solutio…
We study the Cauchy problem for fully nonlinear (stochastic) parabolic partial differential equations. We provide both in deterministic and stochastic case the existence of a maximal defined solution for the problem and we provide suitable blow-up criterion. The key idea is the use of the paradifferential operator calculus in order to reduce the fully nonlinear problem into an abstract quasilinear (stochastic) parabolic equation. This allows us to use some recent results on abstract quasilinear (stochastic) evolution equations in Banach spaces. To do so, we analyse the properties of the paradi…
For some deterministic nonlinear PDEs on the torus whose solutions may blow up in finite time, we show that, under suitable conditions on the nonlinear term, the blow-up is delayed by multiplicative noise of transport type in a certain scaling limit. The main result is applied to the 3D Keller-Segel, 3D Fisher-KPP and 2D Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations, yielding long-time existence for large initial data with high probability.
The initial boundary-value problem (IBVP) and the Cauchy problem for the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation and other related $2m$th-order semilinear parabolic partial differential equations in one and N dimensions are considered. Global existence and blow-up as well as uniform bounds are reviewed by using: (i) classic tools of interpolation theory and Galerkin methods, (ii) eigenfunction and nonlinear capacity methods, (iii) Henry's version of weighted Gronwall's inequalities, and (vi) two types of scaling (blow-up) arguments. For the IBVPs, existence of global solutions is proved for both Dirich…
Blow-up in second and fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered in bounded regions of one, two and three spatial dimensions with uniform initial data. A phenomenon whereby singularities form at multiple points simultaneously is exhibited and explained by means of a singular perturbation theory. In the second order case we pre- dict that points furthest from the boundary are selected by the dynamics of the PDE for singularity. In the fourth order case, singularities can form simultaneously at multiple locations, even in one spatial dimension. In two …
This paper is a continuation of Part I of this project, where we developed a new local well-posedness theory for nonlinear stochastic PDEs with Gaussian noise. In the current Part II we consider blow-up criteria and regularization phenomena. As in Part I we can allow nonlinearities with polynomial growth, and rough initial values from critical spaces. In the first main result we obtain several new blow-up criteria for quasi- and semilinear stochastic evolution equations. In particular, for semilinear equations we obtain a Serrin type blow-up criterium, which extends a recent result of Prüss-Si…
