The Cauchy problem is considered for the perturbed strictly hyperbolic 2x2 system of quasilinear equations. The unperturbed problem has a persistent solution with two discontinuity lines (shock waves). Both an asymptotics of shock waves position in the plane (x,t) and an asymptotics of the perturbed problem solution are discussed.
We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
In this paper we study large time behaviors toward shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations for 1-D convex scalar conservation laws. The asymptotic stabilities and decay rates of shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations are proved.
Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface positio…
By using an equivalent form of the uniform Lopatinski condition for 1-shocks, we prove that the stability condition found by the energy method in [A. Morando, Y. Trakhinin, P. Trebeschi, Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, Math. Ann. 378 (2020) 1471-1504] for the rectilinear shock waves in two-dimensional flows of compressible isentropic inviscid elastic materials is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability (implying structural nonlinear stability of corresponding curved shock waves). The key point of our spectral analysis is a delicate st…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave of two viscous shocks under spatially periodic perturbations for the 1-D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is proved that as time increases, the solution approaches the background composite wave with a shift for each shock, where the shifts can be uniquely determined if both the periodic perturbations and strengths of two shocks are small. The key of the proof is to construct a suitable ansatz such that the anti-derivative method works.
The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearl…
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…
This paper studies the asymptotic stability of shock profiles and rarefaction waves under space-periodic perturbations for one-dimensional convex scalar viscous conservation laws. For the shock profile, we show that the solution approaches the background shock profile with a constant shift in the $ L^\infty(\mathbb{R}) $ norm at exponential rates. The new phenomena contrasting to the case of localized perturbations is that the constant shift cannot be determined by the initial excessive mass in general, which indicates that the periodic oscillations at infinities make contributions to this shi…
We develop a new approach and employ it to establish the global existence and nonlinear structural stability of attached weak transonic shocks in steady potential flow past three-dimensional wedges; in particular, the restriction that the perturbation is away from the wedge edge in the previous results is removed. One of the key ingredients is to identify a "good" direction of the boundary operator of a boundary condition of the shock along the wedge edge, based on the non-obliqueness of the boundary condition for the weak shock on the edge. With the identification of this direction, an additi…
We develop a theory based on relative entropy to show the uniqueness and L^2 stability (up to a translation) of extremal entropic Rankine-Hugoniot discontinuities for systems of conservation laws (typically 1-shocks, n-shocks, 1-contact discontinuities and n-contact discontinuities of large amplitude) among bounded entropic weak solutions having an additional trace property. The existence of a convex entropy is needed. No BV estimate is needed on the weak solutions considered. The theory holds without smallness condition. The assumptions are quite general. For instance, strict hyperbolicity is…
This paper is dedicated to the construction of a pseudo-norm, for which small shock profiles of the barotropic Navier-Stokes equation have a contraction property. This contraction property holds in the class of any large 1D weak solutions to the barotropic Navier-Stokes equation. It implies a stability condition which is independent of the strength of the viscosity. The proof is based on the relative entropy method, and is reminiscent to the notion of a-contraction first introduced by the authors in the hyperbolic case.
We show the vanishing viscosity limit to entropy shocks for the fractal Burgers equation in one space dimension. More precisely, we quantify the rate of convergence of the inviscid limit in $L^2$ for large initial perturbations around the entropy shock on any bounded time interval. This is the first result on the inviscid limit to entropy shock for the fractal Burgers equation with the quantified convergence, for large initial perturbations.
We consider scalar nonviscous conservation laws with strictly convex flux in one spatial dimension, and we investigate the behavior of bounded L^2 perturbations of shock wave solutions to the Riemann problem using the relative entropy method. We show that up to a time-dependent translation of the shock, the L^2 norm of a perturbed solution relative to the shock wave is bounded above by the L^2 norm of the initial perturbation.
We consider a hyperbolic-parabolic system arising from a chemotaxis model in angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. It is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves). We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost $L^2$-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.
Using a combination of Kawashima- and Goodman-type energy estimates, we establish spectral stability of general small-amplitude relaxation shocks of symmetric dissipative systems. This extends previous results obtained by Plaza and Zumbrun by singular perturbation techniques under an additional technical assumption, namely, that the background equation be noncharacteristic with respect to the shock.
In this paper we present a mathematical theory and a numerical method to study the propagation of a three-dimensional (3-D) weak shock front into a polytropic gas in a uniform state and at rest, though the method can be extended to shocks moving into nonuniform flows. The theory is based on the use of 3-D kinematical conservation laws (KCL), which govern the evolution of a surface in general and a shock front in particular. The 3-D KCL, derived purely on geometrical considerations, form an under-determined system of conservation laws. In the present paper the 3-D KCL system is closed by using …
We consider inviscid limits to shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws in one space dimension, with strict convex fluxes. We show that we can obtain sharp estimates in $L^2$, for a class of large perturbations and for any bounded time interval. Those perturbations can be chosen big enough to destroy the viscous layer. This shows that the fast convergence to the shock does not depend on the fine structure of the viscous layers. This is the first application of the relative entropy method developed in [22], [23] to the study of an inviscid limit to a shock.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves to the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional system of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We extend the results by Huang-Matsumura \cite{Huang-Matsumura} where they treated the equation of viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas. That is, even forthe non-viscous and heat-conductive case, we show that if the strengths of the viscous shock waves and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global solution in time exists and asymptotically tends toward the correspo…
We investigate the $L^p $ asymptotic behavior $(1\le p \le \infty)$ of a perturbation of a Lax or overcompressive type shock wave solution to a system of conservation law in one dimension. The system of the equations can be strictly parabolic, or have real viscosity matrix (partially parabolic, e.g., compressible Navier--Stokes equations or equations of Magnetohydrodynamics). We use known pointwise Green function bounds for the linearized equation around the shock to show that the perturbation of such a solution can be decomposed into a part corresponding to shift in shock position or shape, a…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of perturbations of Lax and overcompressive type viscous shock profiles arising in systems of regularized conservation laws with strictly parabolic viscosity, and also in systems of conservation laws with partially parabolic regularizations such as arise in the case of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations and in the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. Under the necessary conditions of spectral and hyperbolic stability, together with transversality of the connecting profile, we establish detailed pointwise estimates on perturbations from a sum of the visc…
This paper is concerned with the inflow problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. For such a problem, F. M. Huang, A. Matsumura and X. D. Shi showed that there exists viscous shock wave solution to the inflow problem and both the boundary layer solution, the viscous shock wave, and their superposition are time-asymptotically nonlinear stable under small initial perturbation. The main purpose of this paper is to show that similar stability results still hold for a class of large initial perturbation which can allow the initial density to have large oscillations. The …
This paper studies the stability of weak dispersive shock profiles for a quantum hydrodynamics system in one space dimension with nonlinear viscosity and dispersive (quantum) effects due to a Bohm potential. It is shown that, if the shock amplitude is sufficiently small, then the profiles are spectrally stable. This analytical result is consistent with numerical estimations of the location of the spectrum (Lattanzio, Zhelyazov, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 31, 2021). The proof is based on energy estimates at the spectral level, on the choice of an appropriate weighted energy function for th…
Asymptotic decay laws for planar and nonplanar shock waves and the first order associated discontinuities that catch up with the shock from behind are obtained using four different approximation methods. The singular surface theory is used to derive a pair of transport equations for the shock strength and the associated first order discontinuity, which represents the effect of precursor disturbances that overtake the shock from behind. The asymptotic behaviour of both the discontinuities is completely analysed. It is noticed that the decay of a first order discontinuity is much faster than the…
We prove the nonlinear stability of the planar viscous shock up to a time-dependent shift for the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes equations under the generic perturbations, in particular, without zero mass conditions. Moreover, the time-dependent shift function keeps the shock profile shape time-asymptotically. Our stability result is unconditional for the weak planar Navier-Stokes shock. Our proof is motivated by the $a$-contraction method (a kind of weighted $L^2$-relative entropy method) with time-dependent shift introduced in [10,11,13] for the stability of viscous shock …
We establish pointwise bounds for the Green function and consequent linearized stability for multidimensional planar relaxation shocks of general relaxation systems whose equilibrium model is scalar, under the necessary assumption of spectral stability. Moreover, we obtain nonlinear $L^{2}$ asymptotic behavior/sharp decay rate of perturbed weak shocks of general simultaneously symmetrizable relaxation systems, under small $L^{1}\cap H^{[d/2]+3}$ perturbations with first moment in the normal direction to the front.
We prove the large-time asymptotic orbital stability of strictly entropic Riemann shock solutions of first order scalar hyperbolic balance laws, under piecewise regular perturbations provided that the source term is dissipative about endstates of the shock. Moreover the convergence towards a shifted reference state is exponential with a rate predicted by the linearized equations about constant endstates.
We consider systems of conservation laws endowed with a convex entropy. We show the contraction, up to a translation, to extremal entropic shocks, for a pseudo-distance based on the notion of relative entropy. The contraction holds for bounded entropic weak solutions having an additional trace property. The pseudo-distance depends only on the fixed extremal entropic shocks in play. In particular, it can be chosen uniformly for any entropic weak solutions which are compared to a fixed shock. The boundedness of the solutions controls the strength of the shift needed to get the contraction. Howev…
In this paper, we consider the large time asymptotic nonlinear stability of a superposition of shock waves with contact discontinuities for the one dimensional Jin-Xin relaxation system with small initial perturbations, provided that the strengths of waves are small with the same order. The results are obtained by elementary weighted energy estimates based on the underlying wave structure and an estimate on the heat equation.
We consider the $L^2$-contraction up to a shift for viscous shocks of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. In the case of a flux which is a small perturbation of the quadratic burgers flux, we show that any viscous shock induces a contraction in $L^2$, up to a shift. That is, the $L^2$ norm of the difference of any solution of the viscous conservation law, with an appropriate shift of the shock wave, does not increase in time. If, in addition, the difference between the initial value of the solution and the shock wave is also bounded in $L^1$, th…
We investigate one- and multi-dimensional stability of noncharacteristic boundary layers in the limit approaching a standing planar shock wave $\bar U(x_1)$, $x_1>0$, obtaining necessary conditions of (i) weak stability of the limiting shock, (ii) weak stability of the constant layer $u\equiv U_-:=\lim_{z\to -\infty} \bar U(z)$, and (iii) nonnegativity of a modified Lopatinski determinant similar to that of the inviscid shock case. For Lax 1-shocks, we obtain equally simple sufficient conditions; for $p$-shocks, $p>1$, the situation appears to be more complicated. Using these results, we deter…
The paper is concerned with the propagation of ion-acoustic shock waves in a collision dominated plasma. We firstly establish the existence and uniqueness of a small-amplitude smooth travelling wave, then justify its approximation to the shock profile of the KdV-Burgers equations in a suitable asymptotic regime where dissipation in terms of viscosity coefficient is much stronger than dispersion by the Debye length, and prove in the end the large time asymptotic stability of travelling waves under suitably small smooth perturbations.
We consider shock reflection which has a well-known local non-uniqueness: the reflected shock can be either of two choices, called weak and strong. We consider cases where existence of a global solution with weak reflected shock has been proven, for compressible potential flow. If there was a global strong-shock solution as well, then potential flow would be ill-posed. However, we prove non-existence of strong-shock analogues in a natural class of candidates.
