We consider the asymptotic behavior of perturbations of Lax and overcompressive type viscous shock profiles arising in systems of regularized conservation laws with strictly parabolic viscosity, and also in systems of conservation laws with partially parabolic regularizations such as arise in the case of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations and in the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. Under the necessary conditions of spectral and hyperbolic stability, together with transversality of the connecting profile, we establish detailed pointwise estimates on perturbations from a sum of the viscous shock profile under consideration and a family of diffusion waves which propagate perturbation signals along outgoing characteristics. Our approach combines the recent $L^p$-space analysis of Raoofi [$L^p$ Asympototic Behavior of Perturbed Viscous Shock Profiles, to appear J. Hyperbolic Differential Equations] with a straightforward bootstrapping argument that relies on a refined description of nonlinear signal interactions, which we develop through convolution estimates involving Green's functions for the linear evolutionary PDE that arises upon linearization of the regularized conservation law about the distinguished profile. Our estimates are similar to, though slightly weaker than, those developed by Liu in his landmark result on the case of weak Lax type profiles arising in the case of identity viscosity [Pointwise Convergence to Shock Waves for Viscous Conservation Laws, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 50 (1997) 1113--1182].
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
In the previous paper \cite{J1}, we established pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with spatially periodic traveling waves $\bar u$ of a system of reaction diffusion equations, and also obtained pointwise nonlinear stability and behavior of $\bar u$ under small perturbations. In this paper, using periodic resolvent kernels and the Bloch-decomposition, we establish pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with periodic standing waves $\bar u$ of a system of conservation laws. We also show pointwise nonlinear stabili…
Refining previous work in \cite{Z.3, MaZ.3, Ra, HZ, HR}, we derive sharp pointwise bounds on behavior of perturbed viscous shock profiles for large-amplitude Lax or overcompressive type shocks and physical viscosity. These extend well-known results of Liu \cite{Liu97} obtained by somewhat different techniques for small-amplitude Lax type shocks and artificial viscosity, completing a program set out in \cite{ZH}. As pointed out in \cite{Liu91, Liu97}, the key to obtaining sharp bounds is to take account of cancellation associated with the property that the solution decays faster along character…
We consider the motion of a point mass in a one-dimensional viscous compressible barotropic fluid. The fluid--point mass system is governed by the barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations and Newton's equation of motion. Our main result concerns the long-time behavior of the fluid and the point mass, and it gives pointwise convergence estimates of the volume ratio and the velocity of the fluid to their equilibrium values. As a corollary, it is shown that the velocity $V(t)$ of the point mass satisfies a decay estimate $|V(t)|=O(t^{-3/2})$ --- a faster decay compared to $t^{-1/2}$ known…
We study well-posedness for fluid-structure interaction driven by stochastic forcing. This is of particular interest in real-life applications where forcing and/or data have a strong stochastic component. The prototype model studied here is a stochastic viscous wave equation, which arises in modeling the interaction between Stokes flow and an elastic membrane. To account for stochastic perturbations, the viscous wave equation is perturbed by spacetime white noise scaled by a nonlinear Lipschitz function, which depends on the solution. We prove the existence of a unique function-valued stochast…
We investigate the $L^p $ asymptotic behavior $(1\le p \le \infty)$ of a perturbation of a Lax or overcompressive type shock wave solution to a system of conservation law in one dimension. The system of the equations can be strictly parabolic, or have real viscosity matrix (partially parabolic, e.g., compressible Navier--Stokes equations or equations of Magnetohydrodynamics). We use known pointwise Green function bounds for the linearized equation around the shock to show that the perturbation of such a solution can be decomposed into a part corresponding to shift in shock position or shape, a…
In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a 3-D perturbed viscous circulatory flow around an infinite long cylinder. This flow is described by 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. By introducing some suitably weighted energy spaces and establishing a priori estimates, we show that the 3-D cylindrical symmetric circulatory flow is globally stable in time when the corresponding initial states are perturbed suitably small.
We study the large-time behavior of the 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes flow perturbed from Riemann data generating a composition of two shock waves with small amplitudes. We prove that the perturbed Navier-Stokes flow converges, uniformly in space, towards a composition of two viscous shock waves as time goes to infinity, up to dynamical shifts. Especially, the strengths of the two waves can be chosen independently. This is the first result for the convergence to a composite wave of two viscous shocks with independently small amplitudes.
Extending to systems of hyperbolic--parabolic conservation laws results of Howard and Zumbrun for strictly parabolic systems, we show for viscous shock profiles of arbitrary amplitude and type that necessary spectral (Evans function) conditions for linearized stability established by Mascia and Zumbrun are also sufficient for linearized and nonlinear phase-asymptotic stability, yielding detailed pointwise estimates and sharp rates of convergence in $L^p$, $1\le p\le \infty$.
We consider the compressible Navier--Stokes equation in a perturbed half-space with an outflow boundary condition as well as the supersonic condition. For a half-space, it has been known that a certain planar stationary solution exist and it is time-asymptotically stable. The planar stationary solution is independent of the tangential directions and its velocities of the tangential directions are zero. In this paper, we show the unique existence of stationary solutions for the perturbed half-space. The feature of our work is that our stationary solution depends on all directions and has multid…
Generalizing similar results for viscous shock and relaxation waves, we establish sharp pointwise Green function bounds and linearized and nonlinear stability for traveling wave solutions of an abstract viscous combustion model including both Majda's model and the full reacting compressible Navier--Stokes equations with artificial viscosity with general multi-species reaction and reaction-dependent equation of state, % under the necessary conditions of strong spectral stability, i.e., stable point spectrum of the linearized operator about the wave, transversality of the profile as a connection…
Proceeding from the method of stochastic perturbation of a Langevin system associated with the non-viscous Burgers equation we construct a solution to the Riemann problem for the non-interacting particles and sticky particles systems. We analyze the difference in the behavior of discontinuous solutions for these two models and relations between them.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
Motivated by physical and numerical observations of time oscillatory ``galloping'', ``spinning'', and ``cellular'' instabilities of detonation waves, we study Poincaré--Hopf bifurcation of traveling-wave solutions of viscous conservation laws. The main difficulty is the absence of a spectral gap between oscillatory modes and essential spectrum, preventing standard reduction to a finite-dimensional center manifold. We overcome this by direct Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction, using detailed pointwise bounds on the linearized solution operator to carry out a nonstandard implicit function construction …
It was pointed out in [P.L. Lions, G. Papanicolaou, S. Varadhan, Homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equation, unpublished preprint (1987)] that, for first order Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equations, homogenization starting with affine initial data implies homogenization for general uniformly continuous initial data. The argument makes use of some properties of the HJ semi-group, in particular, the finite speed of propagation. The last property is lost for viscous HJ equations. In this paper we prove the above mentioned implication in both viscous and non-viscous cases. Our proof relies on a variant o…
In this paper, we investigate and prove the nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave solutions of a scalar viscous conservation law, using the methods developed for general systems of conservation laws by Howard, Mascia, Zumbrun and others, based on instantaneous tracking of the location of the perturbed viscous shock wave. In some sense, this paper extends the treatment in a previous expository work of Zumbrun ["Instantaneous shock location ..."] on Burgers equation to the general case, giving an exposition of these methods in the simplest setting of scalar equations. In particular we give b…
Motivated by the study of conditional stability of traveling waves, we give an elementary $H^2$ center stable manifold construction for quasilinear parabolic PDE, sidestepping apparently delicate regularity issues by the combination of a carefully chosen implicit fixed-point scheme and "damping-type" $H^s$ energy estimates of a type familiar from the study of hyperbolic--parabolic and relaxation systems. An important feature of these methods is that they generalize to situations such as the hyperbolic--parabolic or relaxation case for which parabolic-type smoothing estimates are unavailable. A…
Continuing the program initiated by Humpherys, Lyng, & Zumbrun [17] for strong detonation waves, we use a combination of analytical and numerical Evans-function techniques to analyze the spectral stability of weak detonation waves in a simplified model for gas-dynamical combustion. Combining these new spectral stability results with the pointwise Green function analysis of Lyng, Raoofi, Texier, & Zumbrun [22], we conclude that these waves are nonlinearly stable. The principal novelty of this analysis is the treatment of weak detonation waves. In contrast to the case of strong detonation waves,…
In order to understand the nonlinear stability of many types of time-periodic travelling waves on unbounded domains, one must overcome two main difficulties: the presence of embedded neutral eigenvalues and the time-dependence of the associated linear operator. This problem is studied in the context of time-periodic Lax shocks in systems of viscous conservation laws. Using spatial dynamics and a decomposition into separate Floquet eigenmodes, it is shown that the linear evolution for the time-dependent operator can be represented using a contour integral similar to that of the standard time-in…
Combining pointwise Green's function bounds obtained in a companion paper [MZ.2] with earlier, spectral stability results obtained in [HuZ], we establish nonlinear orbital stability of small amplitude viscous shock profiles for the class of dissipative symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic systems identified by Kawashima [Kaw], notably including compressible Navier--Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, obtaining sharp rates of decay in $L^p$ with respect to small $L^1\cap H^3$ perturbations, $2\le p\le \infty$. Our analysis follows the approach introduced in [MZ.1] to treat sta…
We prove probabilistic well-posedness for a 2D viscous nonlinear wave equation modeling fluid-structure interaction between a 3D incompressible, viscous Stokes flow and nonlinear elastodynamics of a 2D stretched membrane. The focus is on (rough) data, often arising in real-life problems, for which it is known that the deterministic problem is ill-posed. We show that random perturbations of such data give rise almost surely to the existence of a unique solution. More specifically, we prove almost sure global well-posedness for a viscous nonlinear wave equation with the subcritical initial data …
We study low regularity behavior of the nonlinear wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$ augmented by the viscous dissipative effects described by the Dirichlet-Neumann operator. Problems of this type arise in fluid-structure interaction where the Dirichlet-Neumann operator models the coupling between a viscous, incompressible fluid and an elastic structure. We show that despite the viscous regularization, the Cauchy problem with initial data $(u,u_t)$ in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, is ill-posed whenever ${0 < s < s_{cr}}$, where the critical exponent $s_{cr}$ depends on the degr…
We establish long-time stability of multi-dimensional viscous shocks of a general class of symmetric hyperbolic--parabolic systems with variable multiplicities, notably including the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in dimensions $d\ge 2$. This extends the existing result established by K. Zumbrun for systems with characteristics of constant multiplicity to the ones with variable multiplicity, yielding the first such a stability result for (fast) MHD shocks. At the same time, we are able to drop a technical assumption on structure of the so--called glancing set that was nec…
We extend our recent work with K. Zumbrun on long-time stability of multi-dimensional noncharacteristic viscous boundary layers of a class of symmetrizable hyperbolic-parabolic systems. Our main improvements are (i) to establish the stability for a larger class of systems in dimensions $d\ge 2$, yielding the result for certain magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) layers; (ii) to drop a technical assumption on the so--called glancing set which was required in previous works. We also provide a different proof of low-frequency estimates by employing the method of Kreiss' symmetrizers, replacing the one rel…
We consider an incompressible viscous flow without surface tension in a finite- depth domain of three dimension, with free top boundary. This system is governed by a Naiver-Stokes equation in a moving domain and a transport equation for the top boundary. Traditionally, we consider this problem in Lagrangian coordinate and perturbed linear form. In [1], I. Tice and Y. Guo introduced a new framework using geometric structure in Eulerian coordinate to study both local and global wellposedness of this system. Following this path, we extend their result in local wellposedness from small data case t…
We introduce a special stochastic perturbation of the flow of diffuse matter as a curve in the group of diffeomorphisms of flat n-dimensional torus such that the perturbed system yields a solution of Burgers equation in the tangent space at unit of the diffeomorphism group. The same perturbation of the flow of perfect incompressible fluid yields a solution of Reynolds type equation but under some special external force on the diffeomorphism group it transforms into a solution of Navier-Stokes equation without external force.
We consider the \emph{KdV} equation with an additional non-local perturbation term defined through the Hilbert transform, also known as the OST-equation. We prove that the solutions $u(t,x)$ has a pointwise decay in spatial variable: $\vert u(t,x)\vert \lesssim \frac{1}{1 + |x|^{2}}$, provided that the initial data has the same decaying and moreover we find the asymptotic profile of $u(t,x)$ when $|x| \to +\infty$. Next, we show that decay rate given above is optimal when the initial data is not a zero-mean function and in this case we derive an estimate from below $\frac{1}{\vert x\vert^2} \l…
We study the long-time behavior of \textit{several} point particles in a 1D viscous compressible fluid. It is shown that the velocities of the point particles all obey the power law $t^{-3/2}$. This result extends author's previous works on the long-time behavior of a \textit{single} point particle. New difficulties arise in the derivation of pointwise estimates of Green's functions due to infinite reflections of waves in-between the point particles. In particular, the differential equation technique used in previous works alone does not suffice. We overcome this by carefully analyzing the str…
From the steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes models, a penalization method has been considered by several authors for approximating those fluid equations around obstacles. In this work, we present a justification for using fictitious domains to study obstacles immersed in incompressible viscous fluids through a simplified version of Brinkman's law for porous media. If the scalar function $ψ$ is considered as the inverse of permeability, it is possible to study the singularities of $ψ$ as approximations of obstacles (when $ψ$ tends to $\infty$) or of the domain corresponding to the fluid (when $ψ= …
We establish pointwise bounds for the Green function and consequent linearized stability for multidimensional planar relaxation shocks of general relaxation systems whose equilibrium model is scalar, under the necessary assumption of spectral stability. Moreover, we obtain nonlinear $L^{2}$ asymptotic behavior/sharp decay rate of perturbed weak shocks of general simultaneously symmetrizable relaxation systems, under small $L^{1}\cap H^{[d/2]+3}$ perturbations with first moment in the normal direction to the front.
We analyse a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation that corresponds to a viscous shallow water equation (of the Camassa--Holm type) perturbed by a convective, position-dependent noise term. We establish the existence of weak solutions in $H^m$ ($m\in\mathbb{N}$) using Galerkin approximations and the stochastic compactness method. We derive a series of a priori estimates that combine a model-specific energy law with non-standard regularity estimates. We make systematic use of a stochastic Gronwall inequality and also stopping time techniques. The proof of convergence to a solution …
In this paper, we consider an incompressible viscous flow without surface tension in a finite-depth domain of three dimensions, with free top boundary and fixed bottom boundary. This system is governed by a Naiver-Stokes equation in above moving domain and a transport equation for the top boundary. Traditionally, we consider this problem in Lagrangian coordinates with perturbed linear form. In the series of papers [1], [2] and [3], I. Tice and Y. Guo introduced a new framework using geometric structure in Eulerian coordinates to study both local and global wellposedness of this system. Followi…
In the present study we are interested in the Davey-Stewartson equations (DSE) that model packets of surface and capillary-gravity waves. We focus on the elliptic-elliptic case, for which it is known that DSE may develop a finite-time singularity. We propose three systems of non-viscous regularization to the DSE in variety of parameter regimes under which the finite blow-up of solutions to the DSE occurs. We establish the global well-posedness of the regularized systems for all initial data. The regularized systems, which are inspired by the $α$-models of turbulence and therefore are called th…
A technical obstruction preventing the conclusion of nonlinear stability of large-Froude number roll waves of the St. Venant equations for inclined thin film flow is the "slope condition" of Johnson-Noble-Zumbrun, used to obtain pointwise symmetrizability of the linearized equations and thereby high-frequency resolvent bounds and a crucial H s nonlinear damping estimate. Numerically, this condition is seen to hold for Froude numbers 2 \textless{} F 3.5, but to fail for 3.5 F. As hydraulic engineering applications typically involve Froude number 3 F 5, this issue is indeed relevant to practical…
In this paper, we examine the stability problem for viscous shock solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations, or $p$-system with real viscosity. We first revisit the work of Matsumura and Nishihara, extending the known parameter regime for which small-amplitude viscous shocks are provably spectrally stable by an optimized version of their original argument. Next, using a novel spectral energy estimate, we show that there are no purely real unstable eigenvalues for any shock strength. By related estimates, we show that unstable eigenvalues are confined to a bounded region…
We study the long-time behavior of a point mass moving in a one-dimensional viscous compressible fluid. Previously, we showed that the velocity of the point mass $V(t)$ satisfies a decay estimate $V(t)=O(t^{-3/2})$~[K. Koike, J. Differential Equations \textbf{271} (2021) 356--413]. This result was obtained as a corollary to pointwise estimates of solutions to a free boundary problem of barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations. In this paper, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition on the initial data for the decay estimate $V(t)=O(t^{-3/2})$ to be optimal. This is achieved …
We consider the large time behavior of strong solutions to a kind of stochastic Burgers equation, where the position x is perturbed by a Brownian noise. It is well known that both the rarefaction wave and viscous shock wave are time-asymptotically stable for deterministic Burgers equation since the pioneer work of A. Ilin and O. Oleinik [21] in 1964. However, the stability of these wave patterns under stochastic perturbation is not known until now. In this paper, we give a definite answer to the stability problem of the rarefaction and viscous shock waves for the 1-d stochastic Burgers equatio…
We extend our result of [1] and show that one can associate with the stochastically perturbed non-viscid Burgers equation a system of viscous balance laws. The Cauchy data for the Burgers equation generates the data for this system. Till the moment of the shock formation in the solution to the Burgers equation the above system of viscous balance laws can be reduced to the pressureless gas dynamics system (in a limit as the parameters of perturbation tend to zero). If the solution to the Burgers equation contains shocks, the limit system is equivalent to the system with a specific pressure, in …
This work investigates a nonlocal sinh-Gordon equation with a singularly perturbed parameter in a ball. Under the Robin boundary condition, the solution asymptotically forms a quite steep boundary layer in a thin annular region, and rapidly becomes a flat curve outside this region. {Focusing more particularly on the structure of the thin annular layer in this region, the pointwise asymptotic expansion involving the domain-size is evaluated more sharply, where the domain-size exactly appears in the second term of the asymptotic expansion.} It should be stressed that the standard argument of mat…
We consider the Langevin equation describing a stochastically perturbed by uniform noise non-viscous Burgers fluid and introduce a deterministic function that corresponds to the mean of the velocity when we keep the value of position fixed. We study interrelations between this function and the solution of the non-perturbed Burgers equation. Especially we are interested in the property of the solution of the latter equation to develop unbounded gradients within a finite time. We study the question how the initial distribution of particles for the Langevin equation influences this blowup phenome…
