In this paper, we examine the stability problem for viscous shock solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations, or $p$-system with real viscosity. We first revisit the work of Matsumura and Nishihara, extending the known parameter regime for which small-amplitude viscous shocks are provably spectrally stable by an optimized version of their original argument. Next, using a novel spectral energy estimate, we show that there are no purely real unstable eigenvalues for any shock strength.
By related estimates, we show that unstable eigenvalues are confined to a bounded region independent of shock strength. Then through an extensive numerical Evans function study, we show that there is no unstable spectrum in the entire right-half plane, thus demonstrating numerically that large-amplitude shocks are spectrally stable up to Mach number $M\approx 3000$ for $1 \le γ\leq 3$. This strongly suggests that shocks are stable independent of amplitude and the adiabatic constant $γ$. We complete our study by showing that finite-difference simulations of perturbed large-amplitude shocks converge to a translate of the original shock wave, as expected.
In this paper, the large time behavior of solutions of 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves is stable for the Cauchy problem provided that the two waves are initially far away from each other. Moreover the strengths of two waves could be arbitrarily large.
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscous coefficient in the presence of the shock wave. Given a shock wave to the corresponding Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the shock wave as the viscosity tends to zero. The proof is given by an elementary energy method.
We consider the stability problem for shock layers in Slemrod's model of an isentropic gas with capillarity. We show that these traveling waves are monotone in the weak capillarity case, and become highly oscillatory as the capillarity strength increases. Using a spectral energy estimate we prove that small-amplitude monotone shocks are spectrally stable. We also show, through the use of a novel spectral energy estimate, that monotone shocks have no unstable real spectrum regardless of amplitude; this implies that any instabilities of these monotone traveling waves, if they exist, must occur t…
The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearl…
In this paper, the asymptotic-time behavior of solutions to an initial boundary value problem in the half space for 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that the viscous shock wave is stable for an impermeable wall problem where the velocity is zero on the boundary provided that the shock wave is initially far away from the boundary. Moreover, the strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. This work essentially improves the result of [A. Matsumura, M. Mei, Convergence to travelling fronts of solutions of the p-system with viscosity in the presence of a bound…
In this work, we study the stability of the expanding configurations for radiation gaseous stars. Such expanding configurations exist for the isentropic model and the thermodynamic model. In particular, we focus on the effect of the monatomic gas viscosity tensor on the expanding configurations. With respect to small perturbation, it is shown the self-similarly expanding homogeneous solutions of the isentropic model is unstable, while the linearly expanding homogeneous solutions of the isentropic model and the thermodynamic model are stable. This is an extensive study of the result in arXiv:16…
By a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function calculations, we establish stability of viscous shock solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations with $γ$-law pressure (i) in the limit as Mach number $M$ goes to infinity, for any $γ\ge 1$ (proved analytically), and (ii) for $M\ge 2,500$, $γ\in [1,2.5]$ (demonstrated numerically). This builds on and completes earlier studies by Matsumura--Nishihara and Barker--Humpherys--Rudd--Zumbrun establishing stability for low and intermediate Mach numbers, respectively, indicating unconditional stability, in…
This paper is concerned with the Riemann problem for the isentropic Chaplygin gas magnetogasdynamics equations and the formation of delta shocks and vacuum states as pressure and magnetic field vanish. Firstly, the Riemann problem of the isentropic magnetogasdynamics equations for Chaplygin gas is solved analytically. Secondly, it is rigorously proved that, as both the pressure and the magnetic field vanish, the Riemann solution containing two shock waves tends to a delta shock solution to the transport equations, and the intermediate density between the two shocks tends to a weighted $δ$-meas…
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
In this paper we construct unstable shocks in the context of 2D isentropic compressible Euler in azimuthal symmetry. More specifically, we construct initial data that when viewed in self-similar coordinates, converges asymptotically to the unstable $C^{\frac15}$ self-similar solution to the Burgers' equation. Moreover, we show the behavior is stable in $C^8$ modulo a two dimensional linear subspace. Under the azimuthal symmetry assumption, one cannot impose additional symmetry assumptions in order to isolate the corresponding manifold of initial data leading to stability: rather, we rely on mo…
For the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with $γ$-law gas equation of state, $γ\ge 1$, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompre…
Nonlinear Stability for the Superposition of Viscous Contact Wave and Rarefaction Waves to Non-isentropic Compressible Navier-Stokes System with General Initial Perturbations
Extending investigations of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun for compressible gas dynamics and Freistühler and Trakhinin for compressible magnetohydrodynamics, we study by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations the one-dimensional stability of parallel isentropic magnetohydrodynamic shock layers over the full range of physical parameters (shock amplitude, strength of imposed magnetic field, viscosity, magnetic permeability, and electrical resistivity) for a $γ$-law gas with $γ\in [1,3]$. Other $γ$-values may be treated similarly, but we…
The behaviour of the solutions to the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler equations when the pressure vanishes is analysed. It is shown that any solution composed of a 1-shock wave and a 2-rarefaction wave tends to a two-shock wave when the pressure gets smaller than a fixed value determined by the Riemann data; by contrast, any solution composed of a 1-rarefaction wave and a 2-shock wave tends to a two-rarefaction wave. The two situations are illustrated with numerical tests.
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.
We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
We study the system of equations which describes barotropic (isentropic) flows of viscous compressible multi-fluids (mixtures of fluids). We study the relations between pressure, densities, concentrations, viscosities and other parameters of the flow and of the medium.
We consider the Riemann problem composed of two shocks for the 1D Euler system. We show that the Riemann solution with two shocks is stable and unique in the class of weak inviscid limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data with bounded energy. This work extends to the case of two shocks a previous result of the authors in the case of a single shock. It is based on the method of weighted relative entropy with shifts known as $a$-contraction theory. A major difficulty due to the method is that very little control is available on the shifts. A modification of the constr…
We consider the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations, with pressure law $p(ρ) = (\sfrac{1}γ) ρ^γ$, with $γ>1$. We provide an elementary constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, and with {nontrivial vorticity}. We prove that for initial data which has minimum slope $- {\sfrac{1}{ \eps}}$, for $ \eps>0$ taken sufficiently small relative to the $\OO(1)$ amplitude, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a shock in time $\OO(\eps)$. The blowup time and location can be explicitly computed and solutions at …
We investigate non-contraction of large perturbations around intermediate entropic shock waves and contact discontinuities for the three-dimensional planar compressible isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To do that, we take advantage of criteria developed by Kang and Vasseur in [6], and non-contraction property is measured by pseudo distance based on relative entropy.
We analyze the shock formation process for the 3d non-isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law, in which sounds waves interact with entropy waves to produce vorticity. Building on our theory for isentropic flows in [3,4], we give a constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial data. Specifically, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Euler equations which form a generic stable shock with explicitly computable blowup time, location, and direction. This is achieved by establishing the asymptotic stability of a generic shock profile in modulated sel…
Building on work of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun in the shock wave case, we study stability of compressive, or "shock-like", boundary layers of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with gamma-law pressure by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations. Our results indicate stability for gamma in the interval [1, 3] for all compressive boundary-layers, independent of amplitude, save for inflow layers in the characteristic limit (not treated). Expansive inflow boundary-layers have been shown to be stable for all amplitudes b…
In this paper we consider the isentropic compressible Euler equations in two space dimensions together with particular initial data. The latter consists only of two constant states, where one state lies on the lower and the other state on the upper half plane. The aim is to investigate if there exists a unique entropy solution or if the convex integration method produces infinitely many entropy solutions. For some initial states this question has been answered by E. Feireisl and O. Kreml, and also G.-Q. Chen and J. Chen, where there exists a unique entropy solution. For other initial states E.…
We solve the Riemann problems for isentropic compressible Euler equations of polytropic gases in the class of Radon measures, and the solutions admit the concentration of mass. It is found that, under the requirement of satisfying the over-compressing entropy condition: (i) there is a unique delta shock solution, corresponding to the case that has two strong classical Lax shocks; (ii) for the initial data that the classical Riemann solution contains a shock wave and a rarefaction wave, or two shocks with one being weak, there are infinitely many solutions, each consists of a delta shock and a …
This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system. We show that the combination of viscous contact wave with rarefaction waves for the non-isentropic polytropic gas is stable under \emph{large} initial perturbation without the condition that the adiabatic exponent $γ$ is close to 1, provided the strength of the combination waves is suitably small.
Guderley's 1942 work on radial shock waves provides cases of self-similar Euler flows exhibiting blowup of primary (undifferentiated) flow variables: a converging shock wave invades a quiescent region, and the velocity and pressure in its immediate wake become unbounded at time of collapse. However, these solutions are of border-line physicality: the pressure vanishes within the quiescent region due to vanishing temperature there. It is reasonable that the lack of upstream counter-pressure is conducive to large speeds, with concomitant large amplitudes. Based on Guderley's original solutions i…
We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.
For the Euler equations of isentropic gas dynamics in one space dimension, also knowns as p-system in Lagrangian coordinate, it is known that the density can be arbitrarily close to zero as time goes to infinity, even when initial density is uniformly away from zero. In this paper, for uniform positive initial density, we prove the density in any Lipschitz continuous solutions for Cauchy problem has a sharp positive lower bound in the order of O(1/(1+t)), which is identified by explicit examples in [9](Courant and Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, 1948.).
We establish the local in time well-posedness of strong solutions to the vacuum free boundary problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in the spherically symmetric and isentropic motion. Our result captures the physical vacuum boundary behavior of the Lane-Emden star configurations for all adiabatic exponents $γ>{6/5}$.
In the present paper, it is shown that the large amplitude viscous shock wave is nonlinearly stable for isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, in which the pressure could be general and includes $γ$-law, and the viscosity coefficient is a smooth function of density. The strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. The proof is given by introducing a new variable, which can formulate the original system into a new one, and the elementary energy method introduced in Matsumura-Nishihara [On the stability of travelling wave solutions of a one-dimensional model system for compressible viscous ga…
We study the two-dimensional structural stability of shock waves in a compressible isentropic inviscid elastic fluid in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous shock front solutions of the equations of compressible elastodynamics in two space dimensions. By the energy method based on a symmetrization of the wave equation and giving an a priori estimate without loss of derivatives for solutions of the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a condition sufficient for the uniform stability of rectilinear shock waves. Comparing this condition with that fo…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves to the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional system of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We extend the results by Huang-Matsumura \cite{Huang-Matsumura} where they treated the equation of viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas. That is, even forthe non-viscous and heat-conductive case, we show that if the strengths of the viscous shock waves and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global solution in time exists and asymptotically tends toward the correspo…
We illustrate in a simple setting the instantaneous shock tracking approach to stability of viscous conservation laws introduced by Howard, Mascia, and Zumbrun. This involves a choice of the definition of instanteous location of a viscous shock-- we show that this choice is time-asymptotically equivalent both to the natural choice of least-squares fit pointed out by Goodman and to a simple phase condition used by Guès, Métivier, Williams, and Zumbrun in other contexts. More generally, we show that it is asymptotically equivalent to any location defined by a localized projection
In this paper, we investigate and prove the nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave solutions of a scalar viscous conservation law, using the methods developed for general systems of conservation laws by Howard, Mascia, Zumbrun and others, based on instantaneous tracking of the location of the perturbed viscous shock wave. In some sense, this paper extends the treatment in a previous expository work of Zumbrun ["Instantaneous shock location ..."] on Burgers equation to the general case, giving an exposition of these methods in the simplest setting of scalar equations. In particular we give b…
In this paper we study small shocks of 1D scalar viscous conservation laws with uniformly convex flux and nonlinear dissipation. We show that such shocks are L2 stable independent of the strength of the dissipation, even with large perturbations. The proof uses the relative entropy method with a spatially-inhomogeneous psuedo-norm.
A free boundary problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations is investigated. The asymptotic stability of the viscous shock wave is established under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by an elementary energy estimate.
Stability of Superposition of Viscous Contact Wave and Rarefaction Waves for Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Degenerate Heat-Conductivity and Large-Data
This paper is concerned with singular shocks for a system of conservation laws modeling incompressible two-phase fluid flow. We prove the existence of viscous profiles using the Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory. Weak convergence and growth rates of the unbounded family of solutions are also obtained.
This paper is concerned with the time-asymptotic behavior of strong solutions to an initial-boundary value problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system on the half line $\mathbb{R}^+$. The asymptotic profile of the problem is shown to be a shifted viscous shock profile, which is suitably away from the boundary. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data around the shifted viscous shock profile and the strength of the shifted viscous shock profile are sufficiently small, then the problem has a unique global strong solution, which tends to the shifted viscous shock profile as time …
We study the large-time behavior of the 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes flow perturbed from Riemann data generating a composition of two shock waves with small amplitudes. We prove that the perturbed Navier-Stokes flow converges, uniformly in space, towards a composition of two viscous shock waves as time goes to infinity, up to dynamical shifts. Especially, the strengths of the two waves can be chosen independently. This is the first result for the convergence to a composite wave of two viscous shocks with independently small amplitudes.
This paper is concerned with the inflow problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. For such a problem, F. M. Huang, A. Matsumura and X. D. Shi showed that there exists viscous shock wave solution to the inflow problem and both the boundary layer solution, the viscous shock wave, and their superposition are time-asymptotically nonlinear stable under small initial perturbation. The main purpose of this paper is to show that similar stability results still hold for a class of large initial perturbation which can allow the initial density to have large oscillations. The …
We study by a combination of analytical and numerical Evans function techniques multi-D viscous and inviscid stability and associated transverse bifurcation of planar slow Lax MHD shocks in a channel with periodic boundary conditions. Notably, this includes the first multi-D numerical Evans function study for viscous MHD. Our results suggest that, rather than a planar shock, a nonplanar traveling wave with the same normal velocity is the typical mode of propagation in the slow Lax mode. Moreover, viscous and inviscid stability transitions appear to agree, answering (for this particular model a…
We study the $L^2$-type contraction property of large perturbations around shock waves of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. The contraction holds up to a shift, and it is measured by a weighted related entropy, for which we choose an appropriate entropy associated with the strictly convex flux. In particular, we handle shocks with small amplitude. This result improves the recent article [18] of the author and Vasseur on $L^2$-contraction property of shocks to scalar viscous conservation laws with a special flux, that is almost the Burgers flux…
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…
We consider inviscid limits to shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws in one space dimension, with strict convex fluxes. We show that we can obtain sharp estimates in $L^2$, for a class of large perturbations and for any bounded time interval. Those perturbations can be chosen big enough to destroy the viscous layer. This shows that the fast convergence to the shock does not depend on the fine structure of the viscous layers. This is the first application of the relative entropy method developed in [22], [23] to the study of an inviscid limit to a shock.
Continuing a line of investigation initiated by Texier and Zumbrun on dynamics of viscous shock and detonation waves, we show that a linearly unstable Lax-type viscous shock solution of a semilinear strictly parabolic system of conservation laws possesses a translation-invariant center stable manifold within which it is nonlinearly orbitally stable with respect to small $L^1\cap H^2$ perturbatoins, converging time-asymptotically to a translate of the unperturbed wave. That is, for a shock with $p$ unstable eigenvalues, we establish conditional stability on a codimension-$p$ manifold of initial…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of a composite wave of two viscous shocks under spatially periodic perturbations for the 1-D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is proved that as time increases, the solution approaches the background composite wave with a shift for each shock, where the shifts can be uniquely determined if both the periodic perturbations and strengths of two shocks are small. The key of the proof is to construct a suitable ansatz such that the anti-derivative method works.
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
