We consider the stability problem for shock layers in Slemrod's model of an isentropic gas with capillarity. We show that these traveling waves are monotone in the weak capillarity case, and become highly oscillatory as the capillarity strength increases. Using a spectral energy estimate we prove that small-amplitude monotone shocks are spectrally stable. We also show, through the use of a novel spectral energy estimate, that monotone shocks have no unstable real spectrum regardless of amplitude; this implies that any instabilities of these monotone traveling waves, if they exist, must occur through a Hopf-like bifurcation, where one or more conjugate pairs of eigenvalues cross the imaginary axis. We then conduct a systematic numerical Evans function study, which shows that monotone and mildly oscillatory profiles in an adiabatic gas are spectrally stable for moderate values of shock and capillarity strengths. In particular, we show that the transition from monotone to non-monotone profiles does not appear to trigger any instabilities.
We consider a one-dimensional problem modeling two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media made of two homogeneous subdomains, with discontinuous capillarity at the interface between them. We suppose that the capillary forces vanish inside the domains, but not on the interface. Under the assumption that the gravity forces and the capillary forces are oriented in opposite directions, we show that the limit, for vanishing diffusion, is not in general the optimal entropy solution of the hyperbolic scalar conservation law as in the first paper of the series \cite{NPCX}. A non-classical shock can …
In this paper, we examine the stability problem for viscous shock solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations, or $p$-system with real viscosity. We first revisit the work of Matsumura and Nishihara, extending the known parameter regime for which small-amplitude viscous shocks are provably spectrally stable by an optimized version of their original argument. Next, using a novel spectral energy estimate, we show that there are no purely real unstable eigenvalues for any shock strength. By related estimates, we show that unstable eigenvalues are confined to a bounded region…
This paper is concerned with the Riemann problem for the isentropic Chaplygin gas magnetogasdynamics equations and the formation of delta shocks and vacuum states as pressure and magnetic field vanish. Firstly, the Riemann problem of the isentropic magnetogasdynamics equations for Chaplygin gas is solved analytically. Secondly, it is rigorously proved that, as both the pressure and the magnetic field vanish, the Riemann solution containing two shock waves tends to a delta shock solution to the transport equations, and the intermediate density between the two shocks tends to a weighted $δ$-meas…
In this paper, the large time behavior of solutions of 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that a composite wave consisting of two viscous shock waves is stable for the Cauchy problem provided that the two waves are initially far away from each other. Moreover the strengths of two waves could be arbitrarily large.
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
In this paper, the asymptotic-time behavior of solutions to an initial boundary value problem in the half space for 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated. It is shown that the viscous shock wave is stable for an impermeable wall problem where the velocity is zero on the boundary provided that the shock wave is initially far away from the boundary. Moreover, the strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. This work essentially improves the result of [A. Matsumura, M. Mei, Convergence to travelling fronts of solutions of the p-system with viscosity in the presence of a bound…
In this paper we construct unstable shocks in the context of 2D isentropic compressible Euler in azimuthal symmetry. More specifically, we construct initial data that when viewed in self-similar coordinates, converges asymptotically to the unstable $C^{\frac15}$ self-similar solution to the Burgers' equation. Moreover, we show the behavior is stable in $C^8$ modulo a two dimensional linear subspace. Under the azimuthal symmetry assumption, one cannot impose additional symmetry assumptions in order to isolate the corresponding manifold of initial data leading to stability: rather, we rely on mo…
The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearl…
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscous coefficient in the presence of the shock wave. Given a shock wave to the corresponding Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the shock wave as the viscosity tends to zero. The proof is given by an elementary energy method.
Extending investigations of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun for compressible gas dynamics and Freistühler and Trakhinin for compressible magnetohydrodynamics, we study by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations the one-dimensional stability of parallel isentropic magnetohydrodynamic shock layers over the full range of physical parameters (shock amplitude, strength of imposed magnetic field, viscosity, magnetic permeability, and electrical resistivity) for a $γ$-law gas with $γ\in [1,3]$. Other $γ$-values may be treated similarly, but we…
The behaviour of the solutions to the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler equations when the pressure vanishes is analysed. It is shown that any solution composed of a 1-shock wave and a 2-rarefaction wave tends to a two-shock wave when the pressure gets smaller than a fixed value determined by the Riemann data; by contrast, any solution composed of a 1-rarefaction wave and a 2-shock wave tends to a two-rarefaction wave. The two situations are illustrated with numerical tests.
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
By a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function calculations, we establish stability of viscous shock solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations with $γ$-law pressure (i) in the limit as Mach number $M$ goes to infinity, for any $γ\ge 1$ (proved analytically), and (ii) for $M\ge 2,500$, $γ\in [1,2.5]$ (demonstrated numerically). This builds on and completes earlier studies by Matsumura--Nishihara and Barker--Humpherys--Rudd--Zumbrun establishing stability for low and intermediate Mach numbers, respectively, indicating unconditional stability, in…
We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.
For the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with $γ$-law gas equation of state, $γ\ge 1$, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompre…
We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
We consider the Riemann problem composed of two shocks for the 1D Euler system. We show that the Riemann solution with two shocks is stable and unique in the class of weak inviscid limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data with bounded energy. This work extends to the case of two shocks a previous result of the authors in the case of a single shock. It is based on the method of weighted relative entropy with shifts known as $a$-contraction theory. A major difficulty due to the method is that very little control is available on the shifts. A modification of the constr…
We consider the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations, with pressure law $p(ρ) = (\sfrac{1}γ) ρ^γ$, with $γ>1$. We provide an elementary constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, and with {nontrivial vorticity}. We prove that for initial data which has minimum slope $- {\sfrac{1}{ \eps}}$, for $ \eps>0$ taken sufficiently small relative to the $\OO(1)$ amplitude, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a shock in time $\OO(\eps)$. The blowup time and location can be explicitly computed and solutions at …
We investigate non-contraction of large perturbations around intermediate entropic shock waves and contact discontinuities for the three-dimensional planar compressible isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To do that, we take advantage of criteria developed by Kang and Vasseur in [6], and non-contraction property is measured by pseudo distance based on relative entropy.
We analyze the shock formation process for the 3d non-isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law, in which sounds waves interact with entropy waves to produce vorticity. Building on our theory for isentropic flows in [3,4], we give a constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial data. Specifically, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Euler equations which form a generic stable shock with explicitly computable blowup time, location, and direction. This is achieved by establishing the asymptotic stability of a generic shock profile in modulated sel…
Building on work of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun in the shock wave case, we study stability of compressive, or "shock-like", boundary layers of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with gamma-law pressure by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations. Our results indicate stability for gamma in the interval [1, 3] for all compressive boundary-layers, independent of amplitude, save for inflow layers in the characteristic limit (not treated). Expansive inflow boundary-layers have been shown to be stable for all amplitudes b…
A class of differentiable solutions is proved for the isentropic Euler equations in two and three space dimensions. The solutions are explicitly given in terms of solutions to inviscid Burgers equations, and several directions of propagation. The relative orientation of the directions is critical. Within the directional constraints, the Burgers solutions are arbitrary. The several velocities add, and the pressures combine nonlinearly. These solutions cannot exist beyond the time when shocks develop in any of the Burgers solutions.
In this paper we consider the isentropic compressible Euler equations in two space dimensions together with particular initial data. The latter consists only of two constant states, where one state lies on the lower and the other state on the upper half plane. The aim is to investigate if there exists a unique entropy solution or if the convex integration method produces infinitely many entropy solutions. For some initial states this question has been answered by E. Feireisl and O. Kreml, and also G.-Q. Chen and J. Chen, where there exists a unique entropy solution. For other initial states E.…
We solve the Riemann problems for isentropic compressible Euler equations of polytropic gases in the class of Radon measures, and the solutions admit the concentration of mass. It is found that, under the requirement of satisfying the over-compressing entropy condition: (i) there is a unique delta shock solution, corresponding to the case that has two strong classical Lax shocks; (ii) for the initial data that the classical Riemann solution contains a shock wave and a rarefaction wave, or two shocks with one being weak, there are infinitely many solutions, each consists of a delta shock and a …
Guderley's 1942 work on radial shock waves provides cases of self-similar Euler flows exhibiting blowup of primary (undifferentiated) flow variables: a converging shock wave invades a quiescent region, and the velocity and pressure in its immediate wake become unbounded at time of collapse. However, these solutions are of border-line physicality: the pressure vanishes within the quiescent region due to vanishing temperature there. It is reasonable that the lack of upstream counter-pressure is conducive to large speeds, with concomitant large amplitudes. Based on Guderley's original solutions i…
We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.
We define compressive and rarefactive waves and give the differential equations describing smooth wave steepening for the compressible Euler equations with a varying entropy profile and general pressure laws. Using these differential equations, we directly generalize P. Lax's singularity (shock) formation results for hyperbolic systems with two variables to the compressible Euler equations for a polytropic ideal gas. Our results are valid globally without restriction on the size of the variation of initial data.
For the Euler equations of isentropic gas dynamics in one space dimension, also knowns as p-system in Lagrangian coordinate, it is known that the density can be arbitrarily close to zero as time goes to infinity, even when initial density is uniformly away from zero. In this paper, for uniform positive initial density, we prove the density in any Lipschitz continuous solutions for Cauchy problem has a sharp positive lower bound in the order of O(1/(1+t)), which is identified by explicit examples in [9](Courant and Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, 1948.).
We study the two-dimensional structural stability of shock waves in a compressible isentropic inviscid elastic fluid in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous shock front solutions of the equations of compressible elastodynamics in two space dimensions. By the energy method based on a symmetrization of the wave equation and giving an a priori estimate without loss of derivatives for solutions of the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a condition sufficient for the uniform stability of rectilinear shock waves. Comparing this condition with that fo…
The interaction of elementary waves for isentropic flow in a variable cross-section duct is obtained (\cite{ShengZhang}). The authors have discussed rarefaction wave or shock wave interacts with stationary wave. In this paper, we extend their results to the nonisentropic flow. It can be proved that if one changes $(u,ρ)$ plane in isentropic flow with $(u,p)$ plane in nonisentropic case, the interaction results of rarefaction wave or shock wave with stationary wave can be moved parallel from the isentropic case when contact discontinuity is involved. Thus we mainly focus on the interactions bet…
In this paper, we solve constructively the piston problem for one-dimensional isentropic Euler equations of modified Chaplygin gas. In solutions, we prove rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of a shock wave separating constant states ahead of the piston when the piston pushed forward into the gas. It is quite different from the results of Chaplygin gas or generalized Chaplygin gas in which a Radon measure solution is constructed to deal with concentration of mass on the piston. When the piston pulled back from the gas, we strictly confirm only the first family rarefaction wave exist…
In the present paper, it is shown that the large amplitude viscous shock wave is nonlinearly stable for isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, in which the pressure could be general and includes $γ$-law, and the viscosity coefficient is a smooth function of density. The strength of shock wave could be arbitrarily large. The proof is given by introducing a new variable, which can formulate the original system into a new one, and the elementary energy method introduced in Matsumura-Nishihara [On the stability of travelling wave solutions of a one-dimensional model system for compressible viscous ga…
By using an equivalent form of the uniform Lopatinski condition for 1-shocks, we prove that the stability condition found by the energy method in [A. Morando, Y. Trakhinin, P. Trebeschi, Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, Math. Ann. 378 (2020) 1471-1504] for the rectilinear shock waves in two-dimensional flows of compressible isentropic inviscid elastic materials is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability (implying structural nonlinear stability of corresponding curved shock waves). The key point of our spectral analysis is a delicate st…
Given a first-order nonlinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws endowed with a convex entropy-entropy flux pair, we can consider the class of weak solutions containing shock waves depending upon some small scale parameters. In this Note, we define and derive several classes of entropy-dissipating augmented models, as we call them, which involve (possibly nonlinear) second- and third-order augmentation terms. Such terms typically arise in continuum physics and model the viscosity and capillarity effects in a fluid, for instance. By introducing a new notion of positive entropy production th…
In this paper, we are concerned with the instability problem of a 3-D transonic oblique shock wave for the steady supersonic flow past an infinitely long sharp wedge. The flow is assumed to be isentropic and irrotational. It was indicated in pages 317 of [9] that if a steady supersonic flow comes from minus infinity and hits a sharp symmetric wedge, then it follows from the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions and the physical entropy condition that there possibly appear a weak shock or a strong shock attached at the edge of the sharp wedge, which corresponds to a supersonic shock or a transonic shock,…
We study the Riemann problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations in two space dimensions with the pressure law describing the Chaplygin gas. It is well known that there are Riemann initial data for which the 1D Riemann problem does not have a classical $BV$ solution, instead a $δ$-shock appears, which can be viewed as a generalized measure-valued solution with a concentration measure in the density component. We prove that in the case of two space dimensions there exists infinitely many bounded admissible weak solutions starting from the same initial data. Moreover, we show the sam…
It is well-known that one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics has two elementary waves, i.e., shock wave and rarefaction wave. Among the two waves, only the rarefaction wave can be connected with vacuum. Given a rarefaction wave with one-side vacuum state to the compressible Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the above rarefaction wave with vacuum as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, the uniform convergence rate is obtained. The proof consists of a scaling argument and elementary en…
We show uniqueness and stability in $L^2$ and for all time for piecewise-smooth solutions to hyperbolic balance laws. We have in mind applications to gas dynamics, the isentropic Euler system and the full Euler system for a polytropic gas in particular. We assume the discontinuity in the piecewise smooth solution is an extremal shock. We use only mild hypotheses on the system. Our techniques and result hold without smallness assumptions on the solutions. We can handle shocks of any size. We work in the class of bounded, measurable solutions satisfying a single entropy condition. We also assume…
We are concerned with a model of ideal compressible isentropic two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Introducing an entropy-like function, we reduce the equations of two-fluid MHD to a symmetric form which looks like the classical MHD system written in the nonconservative form in terms of the pressure, the velocity, the magnetic field and the entropy. This gives a number of instant results. In particular, we conclude that all compressive extreme shock waves exist locally in time in the limit of weak magnetic field. We write down a condition sufficient for the local-in-time existence of current…

The Evans function has become a standard tool in the mathematical study of nonlinear wave stability. In particular, computation of its zero set gives a convenient numerical method for determining the point spectrum of the associated linear operator (and thus the spectral stability of the wave in question). We report on an unexpected complication that frustrates this computation for viscous shock profiles in gas dynamics. Although this phenomenon---related to the choice of Eulerian or Lagrangian coordinate system used to describe the gas---is present already in the one-dimensional setting, its …
