Extending to systems of hyperbolic--parabolic conservation laws results of Howard and Zumbrun for strictly parabolic systems, we show for viscous shock profiles of arbitrary amplitude and type that necessary spectral (Evans function) conditions for linearized stability established by Mascia and Zumbrun are also sufficient for linearized and nonlinear phase-asymptotic stability, yielding detailed pointwise estimates and sharp rates of convergence in $L^p$, $1\le p\le \infty$.
For the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with $γ$-law gas equation of state, $γ\ge 1$, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompre…
Extending our earlier work on Lax-type shocks of systems of conservation laws, we establish existence and stability of curved multidimensional shock fronts in the vanishing viscosity limit for general Lax- or undercompressive-type shock waves of nonconservative hyperbolic systems with parabolic regularization. The hyperbolic equations may be of variable multiplicity and the parabolic regularization may be of ``real'', or partially parabolic, type. We prove an existence result for inviscid nonconservative shocks that extends to multidimensional shocks a one-dimensional result of X. Lin proved b…
Using a simplified pointwise iteration scheme, we establish nonlinear phase-asymptotic orbital stability of large-amplitude Lax, undercompressive, overcompressive, and mixed under--overcompressive type shock profiles of strictly parabolic systems of conservation laws with respect to initial perturbations $|u_0(x)|\le E_0 (1+|x|)^{-3/2}$ in $C^{0+α}$, $E_0$ sufficiently small, under the necessary conditions of spectral and hyperbolic stability together with transversality of the connecting profile. This completes the program initiated by Zumbrun and Howard in \cite{ZH}, extending to the general…
Motivated by the study of conditional stability of traveling waves, we give an elementary $H^2$ center stable manifold construction for quasilinear parabolic PDE, sidestepping apparently delicate regularity issues by the combination of a carefully chosen implicit fixed-point scheme and "damping-type" $H^s$ energy estimates of a type familiar from the study of hyperbolic--parabolic and relaxation systems. An important feature of these methods is that they generalize to situations such as the hyperbolic--parabolic or relaxation case for which parabolic-type smoothing estimates are unavailable. A…
Continuing the program initiated by Humpherys, Lyng, & Zumbrun [17] for strong detonation waves, we use a combination of analytical and numerical Evans-function techniques to analyze the spectral stability of weak detonation waves in a simplified model for gas-dynamical combustion. Combining these new spectral stability results with the pointwise Green function analysis of Lyng, Raoofi, Texier, & Zumbrun [22], we conclude that these waves are nonlinearly stable. The principal novelty of this analysis is the treatment of weak detonation waves. In contrast to the case of strong detonation waves,…
Relying on recent advances in the theory of entropy solutions for nonlinear (strongly) degenerate parabolic equations, we present a direct proof of an L^1 error estimate for viscous approximate solutions of the initial value problem for \partial_t w+\mathrm{div} \bigl(V(x)f(w)\bigr)= ΔA(w) where V=V(x) is a vector field, f=f(u) is a scalar function, and A'(.) \geq 0. The viscous approximate solutions are weak solutions of the initial value problem for the uniformly parabolic equation \partial_t w^ε+\mathrm{div} \bigl(V(x) f(w^ε)\bigr) Δ\bigl(A(w^ε)+εw^ε\bigr), ε>0. The error estimate is of ord…
A rigorous proof is given for the convergence of the solutions of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system to the solution of the regularized version of the forward-backward parabolic equation, as the coefficient of the diffusive term goes to 0. Non-homogenous Neumann boundary condition are handled for the chemical potential and the subdifferential of a possible non-smooth double-well functional is considered in the equation. An error estimate for the difference of solutions is also proved in a suitable norm and with a specified rate of convergence.
Extending our previous work in the strictly parabolic case, we show that a linearly unstable Lax-type viscous shock solution of a general quasilinear hyperbolic--parabolic system of conservation laws possesses a translation-invariant center stable manifold within which it is nonlinearly orbitally stable with respect to small $L^1\cap H^3$ perturbations, converging time-asymptotically to a translate of the unperturbed wave. That is, for a shock with $p$ unstable eigenvalues, we establish conditional stability on a codimension-$p$ manifold of initial data, with sharp rates of decay in all $L^p$.…
The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, cou…
We are concerned with viscous profiles (travelling waves and steady solutions) for mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems in one space variable. For a class of systems including the compressible Navier Stokes equation, these profiles satisfy a singular ordinary differential equation in the form \label{e:ab} dU / dt = F(U)/ z (U) . Here U takes values in $R^d$ and $F: R^d \to R^d$ is a regular function. The real valued function $z (U)$ is as well regular, but the equation is singular because $z (U)$ can attain the value 0. We focus on a small enough neighbourhood of a point $\bar U$ satisfying $F(\…
We initiate the study of noncharacteristic boundary layers in hyperbolic-parabolic problems with Neumann boundary conditions. More generally, we study boundary layers with mixed Dirichlet--Neumann boundary conditions where the number of Dirichlet conditions is fewer than the number of hyperbolic characteristic modes entering the domain, that is, the number of boundary conditions needed to specify an outer hyperbolic solution. We have shown previously that this situation prevents the usual WKB approximation involving an outer solution with pure Dirichlet conditions. It also rules out the usual …
A probabilistic representation formula for general systems of linear parabolic equations, coupled only through the zero-order term, is given. On this basis, an implicit probabilistic representation for the vorticity in a 3D viscous fluid (described by the Navier-Stokes equations) is carefully analysed, and a theorem of local existence and uniqueness is proved.
We prove the convergence of quasilinear parabolic viscous approximations to the entropy solution (in the sense of Bardos-Leroux-Nedelec) of a scalar conservation law, considered on a bounded domain in $\R^d$.
We consider the Muskat problem describing the viscous displacement in a two-phase fluid system located in an unbounded two-dimensional porous medium or Hele-Shaw cell. After formulating the mathematical model as an evolution problem for the sharp interface between the fluids, we show that Muskat problem with surface tension is a quasilinear parabolic problem, whereas, in the absence of surface tension effects, the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies a domain of parabolicity for the fully nonlinear problem. Based upon these aspects, we then establish the local well-posedness for arbitrary larg…
Extending investigations of Métivier&Zumbrun in the hyperbolic case, we treat stability of viscous shock and boundary layers for viscous perturbations of multidimensional hyperbolic systems with characteristics of variable multiplicity, specifically the construction of symmetrizers in the low-frequency regime where variable multiplicity plays a role. At the same time, we extend the boundary-layer theory to ``real'' or partially parabolic viscosities, Neumann or mixed-type parabolic boundary conditions, and systems with nonconservative form, in addition proving a more fundamental version of the…
We extend the relative entropy identity to the class of hyperbolic-parabolic systems whose hyperbolic part is symmetrizable. The resulting identity, in the general theory, is useful to provide stability of viscous solutions and yields a convergence result in the zero-viscosity limit to smooth solutions in an $L^p$ framework. Also it provides measure valued weak versus strong uniqueness theorems for the hyperbolic problem. The relative entropy identity is also developed for the system of gas dynamics for viscous and heat conducting gases, and for the system of thermoviscoelasticity with viscosi…
In this paper we apply classical and recent techniques from quaternionic analysis using parabolic Dirac type operators and related Teodorescu and Cauchy-Bitzadse type operators to set up some analytic representation formulas for the solutions to the time depedendent incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations on some conformally flat manifolds, such as cylinders and tori associated with different spinor bundles. Also in this context a special variant of hypercomplex Eisenstein series related to the parabolic Dirac operator serve as kernel functions.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equa- tion with forcing. By using the vanishing viscosity method we obtain generalized solutions. We prove some regularity results about this generalized solutions.
We investigate the $L^p $ asymptotic behavior $(1\le p \le \infty)$ of a perturbation of a Lax or overcompressive type shock wave solution to a system of conservation law in one dimension. The system of the equations can be strictly parabolic, or have real viscosity matrix (partially parabolic, e.g., compressible Navier--Stokes equations or equations of Magnetohydrodynamics). We use known pointwise Green function bounds for the linearized equation around the shock to show that the perturbation of such a solution can be decomposed into a part corresponding to shift in shock position or shape, a…
Extending work of Texier and Zumbrun in the semilinear non-re ection symmetric case, we study O(2) transverse Hopf bifurcation, or \cellular instability," of viscous shock waves in a channel, for a class of quasilinear hyperbolic{parabolic systems including the equations of thermoviscoelasticity. The main difficulties are to (i) obtain Fr'echet differentiability of the time-T solution operator by appropriate hyperbolic{parabolic energy estimates, and (ii) handle O(2) symmetry in the absence of either center manifold reduction (due to lack of spectral gap) or (due to nonstandard quasilinear hyp…
The failure of uniform dependence on the data is an interesting property of classical solution for a hyperbolic system. In this paper, we consider the solution map of the Cauchy problem to the 2D viscous shallow water equations which is a hyperbolic-parabolic system. We prove that the solution map of this problem is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s\times H^{s}$ for $s>2$.
In this article we derive rigorously a nonlinear, steady, bifurcation through spectral bifurcation (i.e., eigenvalues of the linearized equation crossing the imaginary axis) for a class of hyperbolic-parabolic model in a strip. This is related to "cellular instabilities" occuring in detonation and MHD. Our results extend to multiple dimensions the results of Franz Achleitner and Peter Szmolyan (Saddle-node bifurcation of viscous profiles) on 1D steady bifurcation of viscous shock profiles; en passant, changing to an appropriate moving coordinate frame, we recover and somewhat sharpen results o…
Combining pointwise Green's function bounds obtained in a companion paper [MZ.2] with earlier, spectral stability results obtained in [HuZ], we establish nonlinear orbital stability of small amplitude viscous shock profiles for the class of dissipative symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic systems identified by Kawashima [Kaw], notably including compressible Navier--Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, obtaining sharp rates of decay in $L^p$ with respect to small $L^1\cap H^3$ perturbations, $2\le p\le \infty$. Our analysis follows the approach introduced in [MZ.1] to treat sta…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of perturbations of Lax and overcompressive type viscous shock profiles arising in systems of regularized conservation laws with strictly parabolic viscosity, and also in systems of conservation laws with partially parabolic regularizations such as arise in the case of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations and in the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. Under the necessary conditions of spectral and hyperbolic stability, together with transversality of the connecting profile, we establish detailed pointwise estimates on perturbations from a sum of the visc…
Extending results of Oh--Zumbrun and Johnson--Zumbrun for parabolic conservation laws, we show that spectral stability implies nonlinear stability for spatially periodic viscous roll wave solutions of the one-dimensional St. Venant equations for shallow water flow down an inclined ramp. The main new issues to be overcome are incomplete parabolicity and the nonconservative form of the equations, which leads to undifferentiated quadratic source terms that cannot be handled using the estimates of the conservative case. The first is resolved by treating the equations in the more favorable Lagrangi…
Continuing a line of investigation initiated by Texier and Zumbrun on dynamics of viscous shock and detonation waves, we show that a linearly unstable Lax-type viscous shock solution of a semilinear strictly parabolic system of conservation laws possesses a translation-invariant center stable manifold within which it is nonlinearly orbitally stable with respect to small $L^1\cap H^2$ perturbatoins, converging time-asymptotically to a translate of the unperturbed wave. That is, for a shock with $p$ unstable eigenvalues, we establish conditional stability on a codimension-$p$ manifold of initial…
We consider a hyperbolic-parabolic system arising from a chemotaxis model in angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. It is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves). We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost $L^2$-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.
Extending our previous results for artificial viscosity systems, we show, under suitable spectral hypotheses, that shock wave solutions of compressible Navier--Stokes (cNS) and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations undergo Hopf bifurcation to nearby time-periodic solutions. The main new difficulty associated with physical viscosity and the corresponding absence of parabolic smoothing is the need to show that the difference between nonlinear and linearized solution operators is quadratically small in $H^s$ for data in $H^s$. We accomplish this by a novel energy estimate carried out in Lagrangian…
The global dynamics and regularity of parabolic-hyperbolic systems is an interesting topic in PDEs due to the coupling of competing dissipation and hyperbolic effects. This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of a parabolic-hyperbolic system derived from a chemotaxis model describing the dynamics of the initiation of tumor angiogenesis. It is shown that, as time tends to infinity, the Cauchy problem with large-amplitude discontinuous data admit global weak solutions which converge to a constant state (resp. a viscous shock wave) if the asymptotic states of initial values at far field ar…
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…
We provide a detailed analysis of the boundary layers for mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems in one space dimension and small amplitude regimes. As an application of our results, we describe the solution of the so-called boundary Riemann problem recovered as the zero viscosity limit of the physical viscous approximation. In particular, we tackle the so called doubly characteristic case, which is considerably more demanding from the technical viewpoint and occurs when the boundary is characteristic for both the mixed hyperbolic-parabolic system and for the hyperbolic system obtained by neglecti…
Answering a question left open in \cite{MZ2}, we show for general symmetric hyperbolic boundary problems with constant coefficients, including in particular systems with characteristics of variable multiplicity, that the uniform Lopatinski condition implies strong $L^2$ well-posedness, with no further structural assumptions. The result applies, more generally, to any system that is strongly $L^2$ well-posed for at least one boundary condition. The proof is completely elementary, avoiding reference to Kreiss symmetrizers or other specific techniques. On the other hand, it is specific to the con…
We consider a system of nonlinear equations which can be reduced to a degenerate parabolic equation. In the case $x\in\bR^2$ we obtained necessary conditions for the existence of a weakly singular solution of heat wave type ($\codim\sing\supp=1$) and of vortex type ($\codim\sing\supp=2$). These conditions have the form of a sequence of differential equations and allow one to calculate the dynamics of the singularity support. In contrast to the methods used traditionally for degenerate parabolic equations, our approach is not based on comparison theorems.
We study the large-time asymptotic behavior of solutions toward the combination of a viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves for the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations coupling with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force (called the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations). It includes the electrodynamic effects into the dissipative structure of the hyperbolic-parabolic system and turns out to be more complicated than that in the simpler compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Based on a new observation of the specific structure of the Maxwell equations in the Lagrangia…
The motion of an elastic solid inside of an incompressible viscous fluid is ubiquitous in nature. Mathematically, such motion is described by a PDE system that couples the parabolic and hyperbolic phases, the latter inducing a loss of regularity which has left the basic question of existence open until now. In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of such motions (locally in time), when the elastic solid is the linear Kirchhoff elastic material. The solution is found using a topological fixed-point theorem that requires the analysis of a linear problem consisting of the coupling be…
We establish long-time stability of multi-dimensional viscous shocks of a general class of symmetric hyperbolic--parabolic systems with variable multiplicities, notably including the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in dimensions $d\ge 2$. This extends the existing result established by K. Zumbrun for systems with characteristics of constant multiplicity to the ones with variable multiplicity, yielding the first such a stability result for (fast) MHD shocks. At the same time, we are able to drop a technical assumption on structure of the so--called glancing set that was nec…
We deal with the viscous profiles for a class of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems. We focus, in particular, on the case of the compressible Navier Stokes equation in one space variable written in Eulerian coordinates. We describe the link between these profiles and a singular ordinary differential equation in the form $$ dV / dt = F(V) / z (V) . $$ Here $V \in R^d$ and the function F takes values into $R^d$ and is smooth. The real valued function z is as well regular: the equation is singular in the sense that z (V) can attain the value 0.
For a general class of hyperbolic-parabolic systems including the compressible Navier-Stokes and compressible MHD equations, we prove existence and stability of noncharacteristic viscous boundary layers for a variety of boundary conditions including classical Navier-Stokes boundary conditions. Our first main result, using the abstract framework established by the authors in the companion work \cite{GMWZ6}, is to show that existence and stability of arbitrary amplitude exact boundary-layer solutions follow from a uniform spectral stability condition on layer profiles that is expressible in term…
We consider a one-dimensional system arising from a chemotaxis model in tumour angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. This hyperbolic-parabolic system is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves), and in literature, their nonlinear stabilities have been considered in the class of certain mean-zero small perturbations. We show the global existence of the solution without assuming the mean-zero condition for any initial data as arbitrarily large perturbations around traveling waves in the Sobolev space $H^1$ while the shock strength…
We extend our recent work with K. Zumbrun on long-time stability of multi-dimensional noncharacteristic viscous boundary layers of a class of symmetrizable hyperbolic-parabolic systems. Our main improvements are (i) to establish the stability for a larger class of systems in dimensions $d\ge 2$, yielding the result for certain magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) layers; (ii) to drop a technical assumption on the so--called glancing set which was required in previous works. We also provide a different proof of low-frequency estimates by employing the method of Kreiss' symmetrizers, replacing the one rel…
In this paper the model for a highly viscous droplet sliding down an inclined plane is analyzed. It is shown that, provided the slope is not too steep, the corresponding moving boundary problem possesses classical solutions. Well-posedness is lost when the relevant linearization ceases to be parabolic. This occurs above a critical incline which depends on the shape of the initial wetted region as well as on the liquid's mass. It is also shown that translating circular solutions are asymptotically stable if the kinematic boundary condition is given by an affine functionand provided the incline …
In this paper we introduce a concept of "regulated function" $v(t,x)$ of two variables, which reduces to the classical definition when $v$ is independent of $t$. We then consider a scalar conservation law of the form $u_t+F(v(t,x),u)_x=0$, where $F$ is smooth and $v$ is a regulated function, possibly discontinuous w.r.t.both $t$ and $x$. By adding a small viscosity, one obtains a well posed parabolic equation. As the viscous term goes to zero, the uniqueness of the vanishing viscosity limit is proved, relying on comparison estimates for solutions to the corresponding Hamilton--Jacobi equation.…
The Cauchy problem for a quasilinear system of hyperbolic-parabolic equations is addressed with the method of linearization and fixed point. Coupling between the hyperbolic and parabolic variables is allowed in the linearization and we do not assume the Friedrich's symmetrizability of the system. This coupling results in linear energy estimates that prevent the application of Banach's contraction principle. A metric fixed point theorem is developed in order to conclude the local existence and uniqueness of solutions. We show that the boundedness in the high norm and contraction in the low norm…
The present contribution proves the asymptotic orbital stability of viscous regularizations of stable Riemann shocks of scalar balance laws, uniformly with respect to the viscosity/diffusion parameter $ε$. The uniformity is understood in the sense that all constants involved in the stability statements are uniform and that the corresponding multiscale $ε$-dependent topology reduces to the classical $W^{1,\infty}$-topology when restricted to functions supported away from the shock location. Main difficulties include that uniformity precludes any use of parabolic regularization to close regulari…
