We deal with the viscous profiles for a class of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems. We focus, in particular, on the case of the compressible Navier Stokes equation in one space variable written in Eulerian coordinates. We describe the link between these profiles and a singular ordinary differential equation in the form $$ dV / dt = F(V) / z (V) . $$ Here $V \in R^d$ and the function F takes values into $R^d$ and is smooth. The real valued function z is as well regular: the equation is singular in the sense that z (V) can attain the value 0.
This paper is concerned with singular shocks for a system of conservation laws modeling incompressible two-phase fluid flow. We prove the existence of viscous profiles using the Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory. Weak convergence and growth rates of the unbounded family of solutions are also obtained.
We show that the 1d viscous Burgers equation considered for complex valued functions develops finite-time singularities from compactly supported smooth data. By means of the Cole-Hopf transformation, the singularities of the solutions are related to zeros of complex-valued solutions of the heat equation. We prove that such zeros are isolated if they are not present in the initial data.
Here we study the nonnegative solutions of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation [u_{t}-Δu+|\nabla u|^{q}=0] in $Q_{Ω,T}=Ω\times(0,T),$ where $q>1,T\in(0,\infty] ,$ and $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}% ^{N}$ containing $0,$ or $Ω=\mathbb{R}^{N}.$ We consider solutions with a possible singularity at point $(x,t)=(0,0).$ We show that if $q\geq q_{\ast}=(N+2)/(N+1)$ the singularity is removable.
We are concerned on the possibility of finite time singularity in a partially viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n=2,3$, namely the MHD with positive viscosity and zero resistivity. In the special case of zero magnetic field the system reduces to the Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^n$. In this paper we exclude the scenario of finite time singularity in the form of self-similarity, under suitable integrability conditions on the velocity and the magnetic field. We also prove the nonexistence of asymptotically self-similar singularity. This provides us information on the beh…
The scalar curvature equation for rotation invariant Kähler metrics on $\mathbb{C}^n \backslash \{0\}$ is reduced to a system of ODEs of order 2. By solving the ODEs, we obtain complete lists of rotation invariant zero or positive csck on $\mathbb{C}^n \backslash \{0\}$ in lower dimensions. We also prove that there does not exist negative csck on $\mathbb{C}^n \backslash \{0\}$ for $n=2,3$.
It was shown by Schecter (2004, J. Differential Equations, 205, 185-210), using the methods of Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory, that the Dafermos regularization $u_t+f(u)_x= εtu_{xx}$ for the Keyfitz-Kranzer system admits an unbounded family of solutions. Inspired by that work, in this paper we provide a more intuitive approach which leads to a stronger result. In addition to the existence of viscous profiles, we also prove the weak convergence and show that the maximum of the solution is of order $ε^{-2}$. This asymptotic behavior is distinct from that obtained in the author's recent w…
We consider a relaxation of the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation induced by the second-order inertial term~$u_{tt}$. The equation also contains a semilinear term $f(u)$ of "singular" type. Namely, the function $f$ is defined only on a bounded interval of ${\mathbb R}$ corresponding to the physically admissible values of the unknown $u$, and diverges as $u$ approaches the extrema of that interval. In view of its interaction with the inertial term $u_{tt}$, the term $f(u)$ is difficult to be treated mathematically. Based on an approach originally devised for the strongly damped wave equation, we p…
We extend in this paper the definition of Caputo derivatives of order in $(0,1)$ to a certain class of locally integrable functions using a convolution group. Our strategy is to define a fractional calculus for a certain class of distributions using the convolution group. When acting on causal functions, this fractional calculus agrees with the traditional Riemann-Liouville definition for $t>0$ but includes some singularities at $t=0$ so that the group property holds. Then, making use of this fractional calculus, we introduce the generalized definition of Caputo derivatives. The new definition…
Asymptotic properties of solutions of odd-order nonlinear dispersion equations are studied. The global in time similarity solutions, which lead to eigenfunctions of the rescaled ODEs, are constructed.
We analyze a diffuse interface model that couples a viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase variable with a diffusion-reaction equation for the nutrient concentration. The system under consideration also takes into account some important mechanisms like chemotaxis, active transport as well as nonlocal interaction of Oono's type. When the spatial dimension is three, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions to the model with singular potentials including the physically relevant logarithmic potential. Then we obtain some regularity properties of the weak solutions when …
The quasi-neutral limit of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system modeling a viscous plasma with vanishing viscosity coefficients in the half-space $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{+}$ is rigorously proved under a Navier-slip boundary condition for velocity and the Dirichlet boundary condition for electric potential. This is achieved by establishing the nonlinear stability of the approximation solutions involving the strong boundary layer in density and electric potential, which comes from the break-down of the quasi-neutrality near the boundary, and dealing with the difficulty of the interaction of this strong bou…
In this paper, we investigate the stabilization of a linear Bresse system with one singular local frictional damping acting in the longitudinal displacement, under fully Dirichlet boundary conditions. First, we prove the strong stability of our system. Next, using a frequency domain approach combined with the multiplier method, we establish the exponential stability of the solution if and only if the three waves have the same speed of propagation. On the contrary, we prove that the energy of our system decays polynomially with rates $t^{-1}$ or $t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$.
We study the stochastic viscous nonlinear wave equations (SvNLW) on $\mathbb T^2$, forced by a fractional derivative of the space-time white noise $ξ$. In particular, we consider SvNLW with the singular additive forcing $D^\frac{1}{2}ξ$ such that solutions are expected to be merely distributions. By introducing an appropriate renormalization, we prove local well-posedness of SvNLW. By establishing an energy bound via a Yudovich-type argument, we also prove global well-posedness of the defocusing cubic SvNLW. Lastly, in the defocusing case, we prove almost sure global well-posedness of SvNLW wi…
We study the boundary value problem with measures for (E1) $-\Gd u+g(|\nabla u|)=0$ in a bounded domain $\Gw$ in $\BBR^N$, satisfying (E2) $ u=\gm$ on $\prt\Gw$ and prove that if $g\in L^1(1,\infty;t^{-(2N+1)/N}dt)$ is nondecreasing (E1)-(E2) can be solved with any positive bounded measure. When $g(r)\geq r^q$ with $q>1$ we prove that any positive function satisfying (E1) admits a boundary trace which is an outer regular Borel measure, not necessarily bounded. When $g(r)=r^q$ with $1
We consider a system of nonlinear equations which can be reduced to a degenerate parabolic equation. In the case $x\in\bR^2$ we obtained necessary conditions for the existence of a weakly singular solution of heat wave type ($\codim\sing\supp=1$) and of vortex type ($\codim\sing\supp=2$). These conditions have the form of a sequence of differential equations and allow one to calculate the dynamics of the singularity support. In contrast to the methods used traditionally for degenerate parabolic equations, our approach is not based on comparison theorems.
A boundary control problem for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equations with possibly singular potentials and dynamic boundary conditions is studied and first order necessary conditions for optimality are proved. Key words: Cahn-Hilliard equation, dynamic boundary conditions, phase separation, singular potentials, optimal control, optimality conditions, adjoint state system
In the present contribution we study a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system where a further leading term in the expression for the chemical potential $ μ$ is present. This term consists of a subdifferential operator $S$ in $L^2(Ω)$ (where $Ω$ is the domain where the evolution takes place) acting on the difference of the phase variable $φ$ and a given state $φ^* $, which is prescribed and may depend on space and time. We prove existence and continuous dependence results in case of both homogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the chemical potential $μ$. Next, by assuming that $S=ρ\,$si…
The large time behavior of solutions to Cauchy problem for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation is classified. The large time asymptotics are given by very singular self-similar solutions on one hand and by self-similar viscosity solutions on the other hand
In the present study we are interested in the Davey-Stewartson equations (DSE) that model packets of surface and capillary-gravity waves. We focus on the elliptic-elliptic case, for which it is known that DSE may develop a finite-time singularity. We propose three systems of non-viscous regularization to the DSE in variety of parameter regimes under which the finite blow-up of solutions to the DSE occurs. We establish the global well-posedness of the regularized systems for all initial data. The regularized systems, which are inspired by the $α$-models of turbulence and therefore are called th…
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
Due to the highly degeneracy and singularities of the entropy equation, the physical entropy for viscous and heat conductive polytropic gases behave singularly in the presence of vacuum and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the uniform boundedness of the entropy and the inhomogeneous Sobolev regularities of the velocity and temperature can be propagated for viscous and heat conductive gases in $\mathbb R^3$, provided that the initial vacuum occurs only at far fields with suitably slow decay of the initial density. Precisely, it is proved that for any …
Analytic continuation of viscous shock solution for the generalized Burgers equation with polynomial nonlinear source term is investigated. We show that a pertubated wave recovers its analyticity in the space variable in the strip limited by the first pair of singularities of the wave.
The notion of singular reduction operators, i.e., of singular operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of partial differential equations in two independent variables is introduced. All possible reductions of these equations to first-order ODEs are are exhaustively described. As examples, properties of singular reduction operators of (1+1)-dimensional evolution and wave equations are studied. It is shown how to favourably enhance the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for this class by an in-depth prior study of the corresponding singular vector fields.
We give an answer to a question posed in [P. Amorim, R. Colombo, and A. Teixeira, ESAIM Math. Model. Numerics. Anal. 2015], which can be loosely speaking formulated as follows. Consider a family of continuity equations where the velocity depends on the solution via the convolution by a regular kernel. In the singular limit where the convolution kernel is replaced by a Dirac delta, one formally recovers a conservation law: can we rigorously justify this formal limit? We exhibit counterexamples showing that, despite numerical evidence suggesting a positive answer, one in general does not have co…
These notes describe some applications of the analysis of ordinary differential equations to the study of the viscous approximation of conservation laws in one space dimension. The exposition mostly focuses on the analysis of invariant manifolds like the center manifold and the stable manifold. The last section addresses a more specific issue and describes a possible way of extending the notions of center and stable manifold to some classes of singular ordinary differential equations arising in the study of the Navier-Stokes equation in one space variable.
In this paper we establish second-order sufficient optimality conditions for a boundary control problem that has been introduced and studied by three of the authors in the preprint arXiv:1407.3916. This control problem regards the viscous Cahn--Hilliard equation with possibly singular potentials and dynamic boundary conditions.
Motivated by radiation hydrodynamics, we analyse a 2x2 system consisting of a one-dimensional viscous conservation law with strictly convex flux -- the viscous Burgers' equation being a paradigmatic example -- coupled with an elliptic equation, named viscous Hamer-type system. In the regime of small viscosity and for large shocks, namely when the profile of the corresponding underlying inviscid model undergoes a discontinuity -- usually called sub-shock -- it is proved the existence of a smooth propagating front, regularising the jump of the corresponding inviscid equation. The proof is based …
In this paper linear stochastic transport and continuity equations with drift in critical $L^{p}$ spaces are considered. In this situation noise prevents shocks for the transport equation and singularities in the density for the continuity equation, starting from smooth initial conditions. Specifically, we first prove a result of Sobolev regularity of solutions, which is false for the corresponding deterministic equation. The technique needed to reach the critical case is new and based on parabolic equations satisfied by moments of first derivatives of the solution, opposite to previous works …
We consider a system of two equations that can be used to describe nonlinear chromatography and produce a coherent explanation and description of the unbounded solutions (singular shocks) that appear in M. Mazzotti's model. We use the methods of Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory, to show existence of a viscous solution to Dafermos-DiPerna regularization.
We establish the local and global well-posedness of strong solutions to the two- and three-dimensional anelastic equations of stratified viscous flows. In this model, the interaction of the density profile with the velocity field is taken into account, and the density background profile is permitted to have physical vacuum singularity. The existing time of the solutions is infinite in two dimensions, with general initial data, and in three dimensions with small initial data.
We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.
In this paper, we present a data-driven reduced order model of viscous Moore-Greitzer (MG) partial differential equation (PDE) by threading together ideas from principal component analysis (PCA) and autoencoder neural networks to sparse regression and compressed sensing. Numerical simulation of the infinite dimensional viscous MG system is reduced into low dimensional data using PCA and autoencoder neural networks based reduced order modelling (ROM) approaches. Based on the observation that MG equations close to bifurcations have a sparse representation (normal form) with respect to high-dimen…
We are concerned with viscous profiles (travelling waves and steady solutions) for mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems in one space variable. For a class of systems including the compressible Navier Stokes equation, these profiles satisfy a singular ordinary differential equation in the form \label{e:ab} dU / dt = F(U)/ z (U) . Here U takes values in $R^d$ and $F: R^d \to R^d$ is a regular function. The real valued function $z (U)$ is as well regular, but the equation is singular because $z (U)$ can attain the value 0. We focus on a small enough neighbourhood of a point $\bar U$ satisfying $F(\…
In this note, we show the existence of regular solutions to the stationary version of the Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids with a density dependent viscosity, known as the shallow water equations. For arbitrary large forcing we are able to construct a solution, provided the total mass is sufficiently large. The main mathematical part is located in the construction of solutions. Uniqueness is impossible to obtain, since the gradient of the velocity is of magnitude of the force. The investigation is connected to the corresponding singular limit as Mach number goes to zero and methods…
In this paper, we extend the results of [1] by proving exponential asymptotic $H^1$-convergence of solutions to a one-dimensional singular heat equation with $L^2$-source term that describe evolution of viscous thin liquid sheets while considered in the Lagrange coordinates. Furthermore, we extend this asymptotic convergence result to the case of a time inhomogeneous source. This study has also independent interest for the porous medium equation theory.
Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface positio…
