We are concerned on the possibility of finite time singularity in a partially viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n=2,3$, namely the MHD with positive viscosity and zero resistivity. In the special case of zero magnetic field the system reduces to the Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^n$.
In this paper we exclude the scenario of finite time singularity in the form of self-similarity, under suitable integrability conditions on the velocity and the magnetic field. We also prove the nonexistence of asymptotically self-similar singularity. This provides us information on the behavior of solutions near possible singularity of general type as described in Corollary 1.1 below.
In this paper we exclude the scenario of apparition of finite time singularity in the form of self-similar singularities in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations, assuming suitable integrability conditions on the vorticity and the magnetic field. We also consider more sophisticated possibility of asymptotically self-similar singularities, which means that the local classical solution converges to the self-similar profile as we approaches to the possible time of singularity. The scenario of asymptotically self-similar singularity is also excluded under suitable conditions on the profile. In t…
We prove the nonexistence of finite time self-similar singularities in an ideal viscoelastic flow in $R^3$. We exclude the occurrence of Leray-type self-similar singularities under suitable integrability conditions on velocity and deformation tensor. We also prove the nonexistence of asymptotically self-similar singularities in our system. The present work extends the results obtained by Chae in the case of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD).
We prove the global-in-time existence of H^2 solutions of the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics with zero magnetic resistivity in three space dimensions. Initial data are taken to be small in H^2 modulo a constant state and initial densities are positive and essentially bounded. The present work generalizes the results obtained by Kawashima.
We consider an initial-boundary value problem for the one-dimensional equations of compressible isentropic viscous and non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic flows. The global well-posedness of strong solutions with general large data is established. Moreover, the vanishing resistivity limit is justified and the thickness of magnetic boundary layers is analyzed. The proofs of these results are based on a full use of the so-called "effective viscous flux", the material derivative and the structure of the equations.
We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in $\R^3$ for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system. We also prove that the solution to the incompressible MHD system can be obtained as the incompressible limit of the corresponding compressible system. We apply methods in extracting weak dissipative structure which were suggested by Lei-Liu-Zhou.
In this paper we prove that under some integrability conditions for the density and the velocity fields the only stationary weak solutions to the compressible fluid equations on $\Bbb R^N$ correspond to the zero density. In the case of compressible magnetohydrodynamics equations similar integrability conditions for density, velocity and the magnetic fields lead to the zero density and the zero magnetic field.
In this paper we derive a criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda's breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids. In $\mathbb{R}^2$ we establish global weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity for initial data in Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$.
We consider a generalization of the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations to the case of non-Newtonian fluid in the whole space. The viscosity tensor is assumed to be coercive with an exponent $q>1.$ We prove that if the total mass and momentum of the system are conserved, then one can find a constant $q_0>1$ depending on the dimension of space $n$ and the heat ratio $γ$ such that for $q\in [q_0,n)$ there exists no global in time smooth solution to the Cauchy problem. We prove also an analogous result for solutions to equations of magnetohydrodynamic non-Newtonian fluid in 3D space.
In this brief note we study the $n$-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equations with hyper-viscosity and zero resistivity. We prove global regularity of solutions when the hyper-viscosity is sufficiently strong.
We prove the non-uniqueness of weak solutions to 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD for short) equations. The constructed weak solutions do not conserve the magnetic helicity and can be close to any given smooth, divergence-free and mean-free velocity and magnetic fields. Furthermore, we prove that the weak solutions constructed by Beekie-Buckmaster-Vicol [2] for the ideal MHD can be obtained as a strong vanishing viscosity and resistivity limit of a sequence of weak solutions to MHD equations. This shows that, in contrast to the weak ideal limits, Taylor's conjecture does not hold along the vanishin…

We investigate the stability and instability of the magnetic Rayleigh--Bénard problem with zero resistivity. An stability criterion is established, under which the magnetic Bénard problem is stable. The proof mainly is based on a three-layers energy method and an idea of magnetic inhibition mechanism. The stable result first mathematically verifies Chandrasekhar's assertion in 1955 that the thermal instability can be inhibited by strong magnetic field in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid with zero resistivity (based on a linearized steady magnetic Bénard equations). In addition, we also provide …
In this article, we prove various illposedness results for the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Hall- and electron-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations without resistivity. These PDEs are fluid descriptions of plasmas, where the effect of collisions is neglected (no resistivity), while the motion of the electrons relative to the ions (Hall current term) is taken into account. The Hall current term endows the magnetic field equation with a quasilinear dispersive character, which is key to our mechanism for illposedness. Perhaps the most striking conclusion of this article is that the Cauchy…
Extending investigations of Barker, Humpherys, Lafitte, Rudd, and Zumbrun for compressible gas dynamics and Freistühler and Trakhinin for compressible magnetohydrodynamics, we study by a combination of asymptotic ODE estimates and numerical Evans function computations the one-dimensional stability of parallel isentropic magnetohydrodynamic shock layers over the full range of physical parameters (shock amplitude, strength of imposed magnetic field, viscosity, magnetic permeability, and electrical resistivity) for a $γ$-law gas with $γ\in [1,3]$. Other $γ$-values may be treated similarly, but we…
We investigate the existence and uniqueness issues of the 3D incompressible Hall-magnetohydrodynamic system supplemented with initial velocity $u_0$ and magnetic field $B_0$ in critical regularity spaces. In the case where $u_0,$ $B_0$ and the current $J_0:=\nabla\times B_0$ belong to the homogeneous Besov space $\dot B^{\frac 3p-1}_{p,1},$ $\:1\leq p<\infty,$ and are small enough, we establish a global result and the conservation of higher regularity. If the viscosity is equal to the magnetic resistivity, then we obtain the global well-posedness provided $u_0,$ $B_0$ and $J_0$ are small enough …
We investigate the nonlinear instability of a smooth Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solution (including the case of heavier density with increasing height) to the three-dimensional incompressible nonhomogeneous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of zero resistivity in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. We first analyze the linearized equations around the steady-state solution. Then we construct solutions of the linearized problem that grow in time in the Sobolev space $H^k$, thus leading to the linear instability. With the help of the constructed unstable solutions of the linearized…
We prove the non-uniqueness of weak solutions to 3D hyper viscous and resistive MHD in the class $L^γ_tW^{s,p}_x$, where the exponents $(s,γ,p)$ lie in two supercritical regimes. The result reveals that the scaling-invariant Ladyženskaja-Prodi-Serrin (LPS) condition is the right criterion to detect non-uniqueness, even in the highly viscous and resistive regime beyond the Lions exponent. In particular, for the classical viscous and resistive MHD, the non-uniqueness is sharp near the endpoint $(0,2,\infty)$ of the LPS condition. Moreover, the constructed weak solutions admit the partial regular…
In this paper, we consider the motion of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with resistivity in a domain bounded by a free surface. The free boundary problem for MHD is an important problem not only for mathematical fluid dynamics but also some application to the field of engineering In fact, when a thermonuclear reaction is caused artificially, a high-temperature plasma is sometimes subjected to a magnetic field and held in the air, and the boundary of the fluid at this time is a free one. In this paper, an electromagnetic field generated by some currents in an external domain keeps an…
For the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with $γ$-law gas equation of state, $γ\ge 1$, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompre…

We investigate the stabilizing effects of the magnetic fields in the linearized magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) problem of a nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic fluid of zero resistivity in the presence of a uniform gravitational field in a three-dimensional bounded domain, in which the velocity of the fluid is non-slip on the boundary. By adapting a modified variational method and careful deriving \emph{a priori} estimates, we establish a criterion for the instability/stability of the linearized problem around a magnetic RT equilibrium state. In the criterion, we find a ne…
We study the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two incompressible, immiscible, viscous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, with zero resistivity, surface tension (or without surface tenstion) and special initial magnetic field, evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. First, we reformulate in Lagrangian coordinates MHD equations in a infinite slab as one for the Navier-Stokes equations with a force term induced by the fluid flow map. Then we analyze the linearized problem around the steady state which describes a denser immiscible fluid lying above a light one wi…
Inspired by an approach proposed previously for the incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations, we present a general framework for the a posteriori analysis of the equations of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) on a torus of arbitrary dimension d; this setting involves a Sobolev space of infinite order, made of C^infinity vector fields (with vanishing divergence and mean) on the torus. Given any approximate solution of the MHD Cauchy problem, its a posteriori analysis with the method of the present work allows to infer a lower bound on the time of existence of the exact solution, and …
