We study low regularity behavior of the nonlinear wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$ augmented by the viscous dissipative effects described by the Dirichlet-Neumann operator. Problems of this type arise in fluid-structure interaction where the Dirichlet-Neumann operator models the coupling between a viscous, incompressible fluid and an elastic structure. We show that despite the viscous regularization, the Cauchy problem with initial data $(u,u_t)$ in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, is ill-posed whenever ${0 < s < s_{cr}}$, where the critical exponent $s_{cr}$ depends on the degree of nonlinearity. In particular, for the quintic nonlinearity $u^5$, the critical exponent in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is $s_{cr} = 1/2$, which is the same as the critical exponent for the associated nonlinear wave equation without the viscous term. We then show that if the initial data is perturbed using a Wiener randomization, which perturbs initial data in the frequency space, then the Cauchy problem for the quintic nonlinear viscous wave equation is well-posed almost surely for the supercritical exponents $s$ such that $-1/6 < s \le s_{cr} = 1/2$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result showing ill-posedness and probabilistic well-posedness for the nonlinear viscous wave equation arising in fluid-structure interaction.
We consider a class of viscous fluids with a general monotone dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient. We introduce the concept of dissipative solution to the associated initial boundary value problem inspired by the measure-valued solutions for the inviscid (Euler) system. We show the existence as well as the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of dissipative solutions. Finally, the dissipative solution enjoying certain extra regularity coincides with a strong solution of the same problem.
In this paper, we prove that the 2D viscous shallow water equations is ill-posed in the critical Besov spaces $\B^{\frac2p-1}_{p,1}(\R^2)$ with $p>4$. Our proof mainly depends on the method introduced by the paper \cite{C-M-Z4}.
We consider the equations of a multi-velocity model of a binary mixture of viscous compressible fluids (two-fluid medium) in the case of one-dimensional barotropic motions. We prove the global (in time) existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to the initial-boundary value problem describing the motion in a bounded spatial domain.
In this work we will focus on the existence of weak solutions for a system describing a general compressible viscous fluid in the case of the pressure being a linear function of the density and the viscous stress tensor being a non-linear function of the symmetric velocity gradient. More precisely, we will first prove the existence of dissipative solutions and study under which conditions it is possible to guarantee the existence of weak solutions.
We consider a stress-energy tensor describing a pure radiation viscous fluid with conformal symmetry introduced in arXiv:1708.06255. We show that the corresponding equations of motions are causal in Minkowski background and also when coupled to Einstein's equations, and solve the associated initial-value problem.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible Newtonian fluid in a bounded domain with in and out flux boundary conditions. We show that if the boundary velocity coincides with that of a rigid motion, all solutions converge to an equilibrium state for large times.
Stability of Superposition of Viscous Contact Wave and Rarefaction Waves for Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Degenerate Heat-Conductivity and Large-Data
In this paper, we rigorously derive the governed equations describing the motion of stable stratified fluid, from the mathematical point of view. Specially, we prove that the scaled Boussinesq equations strongly converge to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification as the aspect ration parameter goes to zero, and the rate of convergence is of the same order as the aspect ratio parameter. Moreover, in order to obtain this convergence result, we also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification.
We study well-posedness and ill-posedness for Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations describing the large scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics. By using the Littlewood-Paley analysis technique, in particular Chemin-Lerner's localization method, we prove that the Cauchy problem with Prandtl number $P=1$ is locally well-posed in the Fourier-Besov spaces $[\dot{FB}^{2-\frac{3}{p}}_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1<p\leq\infty,1\leq r<\infty$ and $[\dot{FB}^{-1}_{1,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1\leq r\leq 2$, and globally well-posed in these spaces when the initial data $(u_0…
We consider a boundary-value problem describing the steady motion of a two-component mixture of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids in a bounded domain. We make no simplifying assumptions except for postulating the coincidence of phase temperatures (which is physically justified in certain situations), that is, we retain all summands in equations that are a natural generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier model of the motion of a one-component medium. We prove the existence of weak generalized solutions of the problem.
We study the Cauchy problem of the 2D viscous shallow water equations in some critical Besov spaces $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. As is known, this system is locally well-posed for large initial data as well as globally well-posed for small initial data in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p<4$ and ill-posed in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p>4$. In this paper, we prove that this system is ill-posed for …
We consider a boundary value problem for the system of equations describing the stationary motion of a viscous nonhomogeneous asymmetric fluid in a bounded planar domain having a $C^2$ boundary. We use a stream-function formulation after the manner of N. N. Frolov [Math. Notes, \textbf{53}(5-6), 650--656, 1993] in which the fluid density depends on the stream-function by means of another function determined by the boundary conditions. This allows for dropping some of the equations, most notably the continuity equation. With a fixed point argument we show the existence of solutions to the resul…
We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.
We consider the Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms describing the stationary flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body moving at a constant velocity and rotating at a constant angular velocity. In a previous paper, we prove a representation formula for weak solutions of the system. Here the representation formula is used to get an asymptotic expansion of respectively velocity and its gradient, and to establish pointwise decay estimates of remainder terms. Our results are based on a fundamental solution proposed by Guenther and Thomann J. Math. Fluid Mech., 8 …
We consider the barotropic Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid confined to a bounded domain driven by time periodic inflow/outflow boundary conditions. We show that the problem admits a time periodic solution in the class of weak solutions satisfying the energy inequality.
We consider the Muskat problem describing the viscous displacement in a two-phase fluid system located in an unbounded two-dimensional porous medium or Hele-Shaw cell. After formulating the mathematical model as an evolution problem for the sharp interface between the fluids, we show that Muskat problem with surface tension is a quasilinear parabolic problem, whereas, in the absence of surface tension effects, the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies a domain of parabolicity for the fully nonlinear problem. Based upon these aspects, we then establish the local well-posedness for arbitrary larg…
We illustrate in a simple setting the instantaneous shock tracking approach to stability of viscous conservation laws introduced by Howard, Mascia, and Zumbrun. This involves a choice of the definition of instanteous location of a viscous shock-- we show that this choice is time-asymptotically equivalent both to the natural choice of least-squares fit pointed out by Goodman and to a simple phase condition used by Guès, Métivier, Williams, and Zumbrun in other contexts. More generally, we show that it is asymptotically equivalent to any location defined by a localized projection
The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, cou…
A class of nonlinear viscous transport equations describing aggregation phenomena in biology is considered. Optimal conditions on an interaction potential are obtained which lead either to the existence or to the nonexistence of global-in-time solutions.
Extending investigations of Métivier&Zumbrun in the hyperbolic case, we treat stability of viscous shock and boundary layers for viscous perturbations of multidimensional hyperbolic systems with characteristics of variable multiplicity, specifically the construction of symmetrizers in the low-frequency regime where variable multiplicity plays a role. At the same time, we extend the boundary-layer theory to ``real'' or partially parabolic viscosities, Neumann or mixed-type parabolic boundary conditions, and systems with nonconservative form, in addition proving a more fundamental version of the…
We consider higher order viscous Burgers' equations with generalized nonlinearity and study the associated initial value problems for given data in the $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. We introduce appropriate time weighted spaces to derive multilinear estimates and use them in the contraction mapping principle argument to prove local well-posedness for data with Sobolev regularity below $L^2$. We also prove ill-posedness for this type of models and show that the local well-posedness results are sharp in some particular cases viz., when the orders of dissipation $p$, and nonlinearity $k+1$, satisfy…
We consider a two-dimensional MHD model describing the evolution of viscous, compressible and electrically conducting fluids under the action of vertical magnetic field without resistivity. Existence of global weak solutions is established for any adiabatic exponent γ>1. Inspired by the approximate scheme proposed in [15], we consider a two-level approximate system with artificial diffusion and pressure term. At the first level, we prove global well-posedness of the regularized system and establish uniform-in-εestimates to the regular solutions. At the second level, we show global existence of…
In this paper we study the well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a diffuse-interface model for the mixture of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects. The governing system consists of modified Navier--Stokes equations coupled with phase-field and energy transport equations. We first derive an energy inequality that illustrates the dissipative nature of the system under the assumption that the initial temperature variation is properly small. Then we establish the existence of weak/strong solutions via the energy method and discuss the long-time dynam…
This paper is concerned with a thermomechanical model describing phase separation phenomena in terms of the entropy balance and equilibrium equations for the microforces. The related system is highly nonlinear and admits singular potentials in the phase equation. Both the viscous and the non-viscous cases are considered in the Cahn--Hilliard relations characterizing the phase dynamics. The entropy balance is written in terms of the absolute temperature and of its logarithm, appearing under time derivative. The initial and boundary value problem is considered for the system of partial different…
We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid in a container with impermeable boundary subject to time periodic heating and under the action of a time periodic potential force. We show the existence of a time periodic weak solution for arbitrarily large physically admissible data.
We prove probabilistic well-posedness for a 2D viscous nonlinear wave equation modeling fluid-structure interaction between a 3D incompressible, viscous Stokes flow and nonlinear elastodynamics of a 2D stretched membrane. The focus is on (rough) data, often arising in real-life problems, for which it is known that the deterministic problem is ill-posed. We show that random perturbations of such data give rise almost surely to the existence of a unique solution. More specifically, we prove almost sure global well-posedness for a viscous nonlinear wave equation with the subcritical initial data …
We consider the Cauchy problem for a model of non-linear acoustics, named the Kuznetsov equation, describing sound propagation in thermo-viscous elastic media. For the viscous case, it is a weakly quasi-linear strongly damped wave equation, for which we prove the global existence in time of regular solutions for sufficiently small initial data, the size of which is specified, and give the corresponding energy estimates. In the non-viscous case, we update the known results of John for quasi-linear wave equations, obtaining the well-posedness results for less regular initial data. We obtain, usi…
Using a simple and well-motivated modification of the stress-energy tensor for a viscous fluid proposed by Lichnerowicz, we prove that Einstein's equations coupled to a relativistic version of the Navier-Stokes equations are well-posed in a suitable Gevrey class if the fluid is incompressible and irrotational. These last two conditions are given an appropriate relativistic interpretation. The solutions enjoy the domain of dependence or finite propagation speed property. We also derive a full set of equations, describing a relativistic fluid that is not necessarily incompressible or irrotationa…
This paper presents the generalized Fourier series solution for the longitudinal vibrations of a bar subjected to viscous boundary conditions at each end. The model of the system produces a non-selfadjoint eigenvalue problem which does not yield a self-orthogonal set of eigenfunctions with respect to the usual inner product. Therefore, these functions cannot be used to calculate the coefficients of expansion in the Fourier series. Furthermore, the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are complex-valued. The eigenfunctions can be utilized if the space of the wave operator is extended and a suitable i…
The derivation of shallow water models from Navier-Stokes equations is revisited yielding a class of two-layer shallow water models. An improved velocity profile is proposed, based on the superposition of an ideal fluid and a viscous layer inspired by the Interactive Boundary Layer interaction used in aeronautics. This leads to a new friction law which depends not only on velocity and depth but of the variations of velocity and thickness of boundary layer. The resulting system is an extended shallow water model consisting of three depth-integrated equations: the first two are mass and momentum …
We illustrate an alternative derivation of the viscous regularization of the diffusion equation which was studied in [A. Novick-Cohen and R. L. Pego. {\em Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.}, 324:331--351]. We provide an alternative proof of existence of solutions, based on the Galerkin method and on compactness arguments. In addition, we propose a "non-smooth" variant of the viscous regularization which we believe may result in interesting hysteretic effects.
We consider a differential model describing nonisothermal fast phase separation processes taking place in a three-dimensional bounded domain. This model consists of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation characterized by the presence of an inertial term $χ_{tt}$, $χ$ being the order parameter, which is linearly coupled with an evolution equation for the (relative) temperature $\teta$. The latter can be of hyperbolic type if the Cattaneo-Maxwell heat conduction law is assumed. The state variables and the chemical potential are subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We first provide c…
We study a nonlinear, unsteady, moving boundary, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem arising in modeling blood flow through elastic and viscoelastic arteries. The fluid flow, which is driven by the time-dependent pressure data, is governed by 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the elastodynamics of the cylindrical wall is modeled by the 1D cylindrical Koiter shell model. Two cases are considered: the linearly viscoelastic and the linearly elastic Koiter shell. The fluid and structure are fully coupled (2-way coupling) via the kinematic and dynamic lateral boundary condition…
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous compressible fluid interacting with the outer world through general in/out flux boundary conditions. We consider a hard--sphere type pressure EOS and show that all trajectories eventually enter a bounded absorbing set. In particular, the associated omega-limit sets are compact and support a stationary statistical solution.
The Navier-Stokes-Fourier system is a well established model for describing the motion of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids. We study the existence of time-periodic weak solutions and improve the known result in the following sense: we extend the class of pressure functions (i.e. consider lower exponent $γ$) and include also the effect of radiation on the boundary.
Within the framework of variational modelling we derive a one-phase moving boundary problem describing the motion of a semipermeable membrane enclosing a viscous liquid, driven by osmotic pressure and surface tension of the membrane. For this problem we prove the existence of classical solutions for a short time.
We consider a nonlinear, moving boundary, fluid-structure interaction problem between a time dependent incompressible, viscous fluid flow, and an elastic structure composed of a cylindrical shell supported by a mesh of elastic rods. The fluid flow is modeled by the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations in a three-dimensional cylindrical domain, while the lateral wall of the cylinder is modeled by the two-dimensional linearly elastic Koiter shell equations coupled to a one-dimensional system of conservation laws defined on a graph domain, describing a mesh of curved rods. The mesh supported sh…
Continuing the program initiated by Humpherys, Lyng, & Zumbrun [17] for strong detonation waves, we use a combination of analytical and numerical Evans-function techniques to analyze the spectral stability of weak detonation waves in a simplified model for gas-dynamical combustion. Combining these new spectral stability results with the pointwise Green function analysis of Lyng, Raoofi, Texier, & Zumbrun [22], we conclude that these waves are nonlinearly stable. The principal novelty of this analysis is the treatment of weak detonation waves. In contrast to the case of strong detonation waves,…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous fluid confined to a straight layer $Ω_δ=(0,δ)\times\mathbb{R}^2$. We show that the weak solutions in the 3D domain converge strongly to the solution of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) when the Mach number $ε$ tends to zero as well as $δ\rightarrow 0$ (and the viscosity goes to zero).
The collective behavior of animals can be modeled by a system of equations of continuum mechanics endowed with extra terms describing repulsive and attractive forces between the individuals. This system can be viewed as a generalization of the compressible Euler equations with all of its unpleasant consequences, e.g., the non-uniqueness of solutions. In this paper, we analyze the equations describing a viscous approximation of a generalized compressible Euler system and we show that its dissipative measure-valued solutions tend to a strong solution of the Euler system as viscosity tends to 0, …
Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface positio…
