We study nonlinear time-asymptotic stability of small--amplitude planar Lax shocks in a model consisting of a system of multi--dimensional conservation laws coupled with an elliptic system. Such a model can be found in context of dynamics of a gas in presence of radiation. Our main result asserts that the standard uniform Evans stability condition implies nonlinear stability. The main analysis is based on the earlier developments by Zumbrun for multi-dimensional viscous shock waves and by Lattanzio-Mascia-Nguyen-Plaza-Zumbrun for one--dimensional radiative shock profiles.
We continue our study of initial-value problems for fully nonlinear systems exhibiting strong or weak defects of hyperbolicity. We prove that, regardless of the initial Sobolev regularity, the initial-value problem has no local $H^s$ solutions, for $s > s_0 + d/2,$ if the principal symbol has a strong, or even weak, defect of hyperbolicity, and the purely imaginary eigenvalues of the principal symbol are semi-simple and have constant multiplicity. The index $s_0 > 0$ depends on the severity of the defect of hyperbolicity. These results recover and extend previous work from G. Métivier [{\it Re…
We study by a combination of analytical and numerical Evans function techniques multi-D viscous and inviscid stability and associated transverse bifurcation of planar slow Lax MHD shocks in a channel with periodic boundary conditions. Notably, this includes the first multi-D numerical Evans function study for viscous MHD. Our results suggest that, rather than a planar shock, a nonplanar traveling wave with the same normal velocity is the typical mode of propagation in the slow Lax mode. Moreover, viscous and inviscid stability transitions appear to agree, answering (for this particular model a…
We utilize a three-dimensional manifold to solve Riemann Problems that arise from a system of two conservation laws with quadratic flux functions. Points in this manifold represent potential shock waves, hence its name wave manifold. This manifold is subdivided into regions according to the Lax admissibility inequalities for shocks. Finally, we present solutions for the Riemann Problems for various cases and exhibit continuity relative to $L$ and $R$ data, despite the fact that the system is not strictly hyperbolic. The usage of this manifold regularizes the solutions despite the presence of a…
For strictly entropic Riemann shock solutions of strictly hyperbolic systems of balance laws, we prove that exponential spectral stability implies large-time asymptotic orbital stability. As a preparation, we also prove similar results for constant solutions of initial value and initial boundary value problems, that seem to be new in this generality. Main key technical ingredients include the design of a nonlinear change of variables providing a hypocoercive Kawashima-type structure with dissipative boundary conditions in the high-frequency regime and the explicit identification of most singul…
Godunov type numerical schemes for the class of hyperbolic systems, admitting non-classical $δ-$ shocks are proposed. It is shown that the numerical approximations converge to the solution and preserve the physical properties of the system such as positive density and bounded velocity. The scheme has been extended to positivity preserving and velocity bound preserving second-order accurate scheme by using appropriate slope limiters. The numerical results are compared with the existing the literature and the scheme is shown to capture the solution efficiently. The paper presents a hyperbolic sy…
In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first order conservation law $\partial_t u+\partial_x F(u)+\partial_y G(u)=0$ with smooth initial data $u_0(x,y)$. It is well-known that the smooth solution $u$ will blow up on the time $T^*=-\frac{1}{\min{H(ξ,η)}}$ when $\min{H(ξ,η})<0$ holds for $H(ξ,η)=\partial_ξ(F'(u_0(ξ,η)))+\partial_η(G'(u_0(ξ,η)))$, more precisely, only the first order derivatives $\nabla_{t,x,y}u$ blow up on $t=T^*$ meanwhile $u$ itself is still continuous until $t=T^*$. Under the generic nondegenerate condition…
This paper studies the uniform and weak Lopatinski\uı conditions associated to classical (Lax) shock fronts of arbitrary amplitude for compressible hyperelastic materials of Hadamard type in several space dimensions. Thanks to the seminal works of Majda (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 43 (1983), no. 281; Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 41 (1983), no. 275) and Métivier (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 296 (1986), pp. 431-479; Comm. Partial Diff. Eqs. 15 (1990), no. 7, pp. 983-1028), the uniform Lopatinski\uı condition ensures the local-in-time, multidimensional, nonlinear stability of such fronts. The stability function …
