We consider a hyperbolic system of conservation laws u_t + f(u)_x = 0 and u(0,\cdot) = u_0, where each characteristic field is either linearly degenerate or genuinely nonlinear. Under the assumption of coinciding shock and rarefaction curves and the existence of a set of Riemann coordinates $w$, we prove that there exists a semigroup of solutions $u(t) = \mathcal{S}_t u_0$, defined on initial data $u_0 \in L^\infty$. The semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ is continuous w.r.t. time and the initial data $u_0$ in the $L^1_{\text{loc}}$ topology. Moreover $\mathcal{S}$ is unique and its trajectories are obtained as limits of wave front tracking approximations.
This paper studies the asymptotic stability of solution to an initial-boundary value problem for a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system on two-dimensional half space, where the data on the boundary and at the far field are prescribed as $u_-$ and $u_+$. We show that the solution to the problem converges to the corresponding planar rarefaction wave for $0\le u_-<u_+$ as time tends to infinity under smallness assumptions on the initial perturbation and wave strength. These results are based on the analysis of div-curl decomposition, the standard $L^2$-energy method, $L^1$-estimate, and the monoton…
In this paper, we describe certain crucial steps in the development of an algorithm for finding the Riemann solution in systems of conservation laws. We relax the classical hypotheses of strict hyperbolicity and genuine nonlinearity of Lax. First, we present a procedure for continuing wave curves beyond points where characteristic speeds coincide, i.e., at wave curve points of maximal codimensionality. This procedure requires strict hyperbolicity on both sides of the coincidence locus. Loss of strict hyperbolicity is regularized a Generalized Jordan Chain, which serves to construct a four-fold…
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the viscosity is of non-Newtonian type, including a pseudo-plastic case. When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, under a condition on nonlinearity of the viscosity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the rarefaction wave as time goes to infinity, without any smallne…
In this note we consider two different singular limits to hyperbolic system of conservation laws, namely the standard backward schemes for non linear semigroups and the semidiscrete scheme. Under the assumption that the rarefaction curve of the corresponding hyperbolic system are straight lines, we prove the stability of the solution and the convergence to the perturbed system to the unique solution of the limit system for initial data with small total variation.
It is well-known that the rarefaction wave, one of the basic wave patterns to the hyperbolic conservation laws, is nonlinearly stable to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations (cf. [14,15,12,17]). In the present paper we proved the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of the planar rarefaction wave to the two-dimensional compressible and isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, which gives the first stability result of the planar rarefaction wave to the multi-dimensional system with physical viscosities.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of the solution to an initial-boundary value problem on the half line for a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system of the radiating gas, where the data on the boundary and at the far field state are defined as $u_-$ and $u_+$ satisfying $u_-<u_+$. For the scalar viscous conservation law case, it is known by the work of Liu, Matsumura, and Nishihara (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 29 (1998) 293-308) that the solution tends toward rarefaction wave or stationary solution or superposition of these two kind of waves depending on the distribution of $u_\pm$. Mo…
We study the large-time asymptotic behavior of solutions toward the combination of a viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves for the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations coupling with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force (called the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations). It includes the electrodynamic effects into the dissipative structure of the hyperbolic-parabolic system and turns out to be more complicated than that in the simpler compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Based on a new observation of the specific structure of the Maxwell equations in the Lagrangia…
Consider two hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension with the same eigenvalues and (right) eigenvectors. We prove that solutions to Cauchy problems with the same initial data differ at third order in the total variation of the initial datum. As a first application, relying on the classical Glimm-Lax result, we obtain estimates improving those in by Saint Raymond on the distance between solutions to the isentropic and non-isentropic inviscid compressible Euler equations, under general equations of state. Further applications are to the general scalar case, where rather pr…
The convergence of the Boltzmann equaiton to the compressible Euler equations when the Knudsen number tends to zero has been a long standing open problem in the kinetic theory. In the setting of Riemann solution that contains the generic superposition of shock, rarefaction wave and contact discontinuity to the Euler equations, we succeed in justifying this limit by introducing hyperbolic waves with different solution backgrounds to capture the extra masses carried by the hyperbolic approximation of the rarefaction wave and the diffusion approximation of contact discontinuity.
In this paper, we investigate the global structure of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the viscous/diffusive flux $σ(v) \sim |\, v \,|^p$ is of non-Newtonian type (i.e., $p>0$), including a pseudo-plastic case (i.e., $p<0$). When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, under a condition on nonlinearity of the viscosity, it has been recently proved by Matsumura-Yoshida \cite{matsumura-yoshi…
A quasi-linear hyperbolic partial differential equation with a discontinuous flux models geologic carbon dioxide migration and storage. Dual flux curves characterize the model, giving rise to flux discontinuities. One convex flux describes the invasion of the plume into pore space, and the other captures the flow as the plume leaves carbon dioxide bubbles behind, which are then trapped in the pore space. We investigate the method of characteristics, the structure of shock and rarefaction waves, and the result of binary wave interactions. The dual flux property introduces unexpected differences…
