A stochastic and variational aspect of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme was applied to hyperbolic scalar conservation laws by Soga [arXiv: 1205.2167v1]. The results for the Lax-Friedrichs scheme are extended here to show its time-global stability, the large-time behavior, and error estimates. The proofs essentially rely on the calculus of variations in the Lax-Friedrichs scheme and on the theory of viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations corresponding to the hyperbolic scalar conservation laws. Also provided are basic facts that are useful in the numerical analysis and simulation of the weak Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory. As one application, a finite difference approximation to KAM tori is rigorously treated.

The paper is concerned with a posteriori error bounds for a wide class of numerical schemes, for $n\times n$ hyperbolic conservation laws in one space dimension. These estimates are achieved by a "post-processing algorithm", checking that the numerical solution retains small total variation, and computing its oscillation on suitable subdomains. The results apply, in particular, to solutions obtained by the Godunov or the Lax-Friedrichs scheme, backward Euler approximations, and the method of periodic smoothing. Some numerical implementations are presented.
The algebraic flux correction (AFC) schemes presented in this work constrain a standard continuous finite element discretization of a nonlinear hyperbolic problem to satisfy relevant maximum principles and entropy stability conditions. The desired properties are enforced by applying a limiter to antidiffusive fluxes that represent the difference between the high-order baseline scheme and a property-preserving approximation of Lax--Friedrichs type. In the first step of the limiting procedure, the given target fluxes are adjusted in a way that guarantees preservation of local and/or global bound…
The weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methods are popular and effective spatial discretization methods for nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations. Although these methods are formally first-order accurate when a shock is present, they still have uniform high-order accuracy right up to the shock location. In this paper, we propose a novel third-order numerical method for solving optimal control problems subject to scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. It is based on the first-disretize-then-optimize approach and combines a discrete adjoint WENO scheme of third ord…
We study a class of variational problems for regularized conservation laws with Lax's entropy-entropy flux pairs. We first introduce a modified optimal transport space based on conservation laws with diffusion. Using this space, we demonstrate that conservation laws with diffusion are "flux--gradient flows". We next construct variational problems for these flows, for which we derive dual PDE systems for regularized conservation laws. Several examples, including traffic flow and Burgers' equation, are presented. Incorporating both primal-dual algorithms and monotone schemes, we successfully com…
We propose a class of weighted compact central (WCC) schemes for solving hyperbolic conservation laws. The linear version can be considered as a high-order extension of the central Lax-Friedrichs (LxF) scheme and the central conservation element and solution element (CESE) scheme. On every cell, the solution is approximated by a Pth order polynomial of which all the DOFs are stored and updated separately. The cell average is updated by a classical finite volume scheme which is constructed based on space-time staggered meshes such that the fluxes are continuous across the interfaces of the adja…
In this work, we discuss and develop multidimensional limiting techniques for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. To ensure that each cell average satisfies a local discrete maximum principle (DMP), we impose inequality constraints on the local Lax-Friedrichs fluxes of a piecewise-linear (P1) approximation. Since the piecewise-constant (P0) version corresponds to a property-preserving low-order finite volume method, the validity of DMP conditions can always be enforced using slope and/or flux limiters. We show that the (currently rather uncommon) use of d…
