In this paper we analyze the large time asymptotic behavior of the discrete solutions of numerical approximation schemes for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws. We consider three monotone conservative schemes that are consistent with the one-sided Lipschitz condition (OSLC): Lax-Friedrichs, Engquist-Osher and Godunov. We mainly focus on the inviscid Burgers equation, for which we know that the large time behavior is of self-similar nature, described by a two-parameter family of N-waves. We prove that, at the numerical level, the large time dynamics depends on the amount of numerical viscosity introduced by the scheme: while Engquist-Osher and Godunov yield the same N-wave asymptotic behavior, the Lax-Friedrichs scheme leads to viscous self-similar profiles, corresponding to the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the continuous viscous Burgers equation. The same problem is analyzed in the context of self-similar variables that lead to a better numerical performance but to the same dichotomy on the asymptotic behavior: N-waves versus viscous ones. We also give some hints to extend the results to more general fluxes. Some numerical experiments illustrating the accuracy of the results of the paper are also presented.
In this paper, we solve nonlinear conservation laws using the radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) method. Nonlinear conservation laws have solutions that entail strong discontinuities and shocks, which give rise to numerical instabilities when the solution is approximated by a numerical method. We introduce a residual-based artificial viscosity (RV) stabilization framework adjusted to the RBF-FD method, where the residual of the conservation law adaptively locates discontinuities and shocks. The RV stabilization framework is applied to the collocation RBF-FD method and t…
In this paper, we develop an adaptive multiresolution discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws in multidimensions. Compared with previous work for linear hyperbolic equations \cite{guo2016transport, guo2017adaptive}, a class of interpolatory multiwavelets are applied to efficiently compute the nonlinear integrals over elements and edges in DG schemes. The resulting algorithm, therefore can achieve similar computational complexity as the sparse grid DG method for smooth solutions. Theoretical and numerical studies are performed taking into consideration of accu…

We prove the conservation of energy for weak and statistical solutions of the two-dimensional Euler equations, generated as strong (in an appropriate topology) limits of the underlying Navier-Stokes equations and a Monte Carlo-Spectral Viscosity numerical approximation, respectively. We characterize this conservation of energy in terms of a uniform decay of the so-called structure function, allowing us to extend existing results on energy conservation. Moreover, we present numerical experiments with a wide variety of initial data to validate our theory and to observe energy conservation in a l…
In this work, we introduce a novel approach to formulating an artificial viscosity for shock capturing in nonlinear hyperbolic systems by utilizing the property that the solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not reversible in time in the vicinity of shocks. The proposed approach does not require any additional governing equations or a priori knowledge of the hyperbolic system in question, is independent of the mesh and approximation order, and requires the use of only one tunable parameter. The primary novelty is that the resulting artificial viscosity is unique for each component of t…

We consider a semi-discrete finite volume scheme for a degenerate fractional conservation laws driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. Making use of the bounded variation (BV) estimates, Young measure theory, and a clever adaptation of classical Kruzkov theory, we provide estimates on the rate of convergence for approximate solutions to fractional problems. The main difficulty stems from the degenerate fractional operator, and requires a significant departure from the existing strategy to establish Kato's type of inequality. Finally, as an application of this theory, we demonstrate numerical c…
This paper addresses the design of linear and nonlinear stabilization procedures for high-order continuous Galerkin (CG) finite element discretizations of scalar conservation laws. We prove that the standard CG method is entropy conservative for the square entropy. In general, the rate of entropy production/dissipation depends on the residual of the governing equation and on the accuracy of the finite element approximation to the entropy variable. The inclusion of linear high-order stabilization generates an additional source/sink in the entropy budget equation. To balance the amount of entrop…
This paper presents a spectral scheme for the numerical solution of nonlinear conservation laws in non-periodic domains under arbitrary boundary conditions. The approach relies on the use of the Fourier Continuation (FC) method for spectral representation of non-periodic functions in conjunction with smooth localized artificial viscosity assignments produced by means of a Shock-Detecting Neural Network (SDNN). Like previous shock capturing schemes and artificial viscosity techniques, the combined FC-SDNN strategy effectively controls spurious oscillations in the proximity of discontinuities. T…

Applying the concept of S-convergence, based on averaging in the spirit of Strong Law of Large Numbers, the vanishing viscosity solutions of the Euler system are studied. We show how to efficiently compute a viscosity solution of the Euler system as the S-limit of numerical solutions obtained by the Viscosity Finite Volume method. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations of the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability problem.
The first part of this paper introduces sufficient conditions to determine conservation laws of diffusion equations of arbitrary fractional order in time. Numerical methods that satisfy a discrete analogue of these conditions have conservation laws that approximate the continuous ones. In the second part of the paper, we propose a method that combines a finite difference method in space with a spectral integrator in time. The time integrator has already been applied in literature to solve time fractional equations with Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$. It is here generalised t…
The paper is concerned with a posteriori error bounds for a wide class of numerical schemes, for $n\times n$ hyperbolic conservation laws in one space dimension. These estimates are achieved by a "post-processing algorithm", checking that the numerical solution retains small total variation, and computing its oscillation on suitable subdomains. The results apply, in particular, to solutions obtained by the Godunov or the Lax-Friedrichs scheme, backward Euler approximations, and the method of periodic smoothing. Some numerical implementations are presented.

Numerical strategy on the grid orientation effect in the simulation for two-phase flow in porous media by using the adaptive artificial viscosity method
While traditional approaches to prevent the carbuncle phenomenon in gas dynamics simulations increase the viscosity on entropy and shear waves near shocks, it was quite recently suggested to instead decrease the viscosity on the acoustic waves for low Mach numbers. The goal is to achieve what, in this paper, we call Mach number consistency: for all waves, the numerical viscosity decreases with the same order of the Mach number when the Mach number tends to zero. We take the simple approach that was used for the proof of concept together with the simple model for the increased numerical viscosi…
