Following pioneering work by Fan and Slemrod who studied the effect of artificial viscosity terms, we consider the system of conservation laws arising in liquid-vapor phase dynamics with {\sl physical} viscosity and capillarity effects taken into account. Following Dafermos we consider self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem and establish uniform total variation bounds, allowing us to deduce new existence results. Our analysis cover both the hyperbolic and the hyperbolic-elliptic regimes and apply to arbitrarily large Riemann data.
The proofs rely on a new technique of reduction to two coupled scalar equations associated with the two wave fans of the system. Strong $L^1$ convergence to a weak solution of bounded variation is established in the hyperbolic regime, while in the hyperbolic-elliptic regime a stationary singularity near the axis separating the two wave fans, or more generally an almost-stationary oscillating wave pattern (of thickness depending upon the capillarity-viscosity ratio) are observed which prevent the solution to have globally bounded variation.
We study the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a general capillary term. Thanks to recent methods based on Lagrangian change of variables, we obtain local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces (even if the integration index p is different from 2) and for variable viscosity and capillary terms. In the case of constant coefficients and for initial data that are perturbations of a constant state, we are able to prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the capillary coefficient goes to zero, connecting our result to the global existence result obtained by Danchin …
In the first main result of this paper we prove that one can approximate discontinious solutions of the 1d Navier Stokes system with solutions of the 1d Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system as the capilarity parameter tends to 0. Moreover, we allow the viscosity coefficients $μ$ = $μ$ ($ρ$) to degenerate near vaccum. In order to obtain this result, we propose two main technical novelties. First of all, we provide an upper bound for the density verifing NSK that does not degenerate when the capillarity coefficient tends to 0. Second of all, we are able to show that the positive part of the effective v…
Global existence and uniqueness of the density-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with variable capillarity and viscosity coefficients
Soap films at equilibrium are modeled, rather than as surfaces, as regions of small total volume through the introduction of a capillarity problem with a homotopic spanning condition. This point of view introduces a length scale in the classical Plateau's problem, which is in turn recovered in the vanishing volume limit. This approximation of area minimizing hypersurfaces leads to an energy based selection principle for Plateau's problem, points at physical features of soap films that are unaccessible by simply looking at minimal surfaces, and opens several challenging questions.
We study generalized minimizers in the soap film capillarity model introduced in [arXiv:1807.05200,arXiv:1907.00551]. Collapsed regions of generalized minimizers are shown to be smooth outside of dimensionally small singular sets, which are thus empty in physical dimensions. Since generalized minimizers converge to Plateau's type surfaces in the vanishing volume limit, the fact that collapsed regions cannot exhibit $Y$-points and $T$-points (which are possibly present in the limit Plateau's surfaces) gives the first strong indication that singularities of the limit Plateau's surfaces should al…
In this paper we study a singular limit problem for a Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with Coriolis force, in the domain $\R^2\times\,]0,1[\,$ and for general ill-prepared initial data. Taking the Mach and the Rossby numbers to be proportional to a small parameter $\veps$ going to $0$, we perform the incompressible and high rotation limits simultaneously. Moreover, we consider both the constant capillarity and vanishing capillarity regimes. In this last case, the limit problem is identified as a $2$-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the variables orthogonal to the rotation axis. If the …
We study the existence of nontrivial weak solutions for a class of generalized $p(x)$-biharmonic equations with singular nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. The proofs combine variational and topological arguments. The approach developed in this paper allows for the treatment of several classes of singular biharmonic problems with variable growth arising in applied sciences, including the capillarity equation and the mean curvature problem.
This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional compressible fluid models of Korteweg type with density- and temperature-dependent viscosity, capillarity, and heat conductivity coefficients, which models the motions of compressible viscous fluids with internal capillarity. We show that the combination of the viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves is asymptotically stable with a large initial perturbation if the strength of the composite wave and the heat conductivity coefficient satisfy some smallness conditions. The proof…
In this paper, we present strong numerical evidences that the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients and smooth initial data of finite energy develop a potential finite-time locally self-similar singularity at the origin. An important feature of this potential singularity is that the solution develops a two-scale traveling wave that travels towards the origin. The two-scale feature is characterized by the scaling property that the center of the traveling wave is located at a ring of radius $O((T-t)^{1/2})$ surrounding the symmetry axis while the thic…
In the present paper we study a singular perturbation problem for a Navier-Stokes-Korteweg model with Coriolis force. Namely, we perform the incompressible and fast rotation asymptotics simultaneously, while we keep the capillarity coefficient constant in order to capture surface tension effects in the limit. We consider here the case of variable rotation axis: we prove the convergence to a linear parabolic-type equation with variable coefficients. The proof of the result relies on compensated compactness arguments. Besides, we look for minimal regularity assumptions on the variations of the a…
We study one-dimensional very singular parabolic equations with periodic boundary conditions and initial data in $BV$, which is the energy space. We show existence of solutions in this energy space and then we prove that they are viscosity solutions in the sense of Giga-Giga.
Given a first-order nonlinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws endowed with a convex entropy-entropy flux pair, we can consider the class of weak solutions containing shock waves depending upon some small scale parameters. In this Note, we define and derive several classes of entropy-dissipating augmented models, as we call them, which involve (possibly nonlinear) second- and third-order augmentation terms. Such terms typically arise in continuum physics and model the viscosity and capillarity effects in a fluid, for instance. By introducing a new notion of positive entropy production th…
The paper studies the asymptotic analysis of a model coupling elastoplasticity and damage depending on three parameters -- governing viscosity, plastic hardening, and convergence rate of plastic strain and displacement to equilibrium -- as they vanish in different orders. The notion of limit evolution obtained is proven to coincide in any case with a notion introduced by Crismale and Rossi in 2019; moreover, such solutions are closely related to those obtained in the vanishing-viscosity limit by Crismale and Lazzaroni in 2016, for the analogous model where only the viscosity parameter was pres…
In this note we study the singular vanishing-viscosity limit of a gradient flow set in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and driven by a smooth, but possibly non convex, time-dependent energy functional. We resort to ideas and techniques from the variational approach to gradient flows and rate-independent evolution to show that, under suitable assumptions, the solutions to the singularly perturbed problem converge to a curve of stationary points of the energy, whose behavior at jump points is characterized in terms of the notion of Dissipative Viscosity solution. We also provide sufficient co…
We prove global existence and uniqueness of solutions to a Cahn-Hilliard system with nonlinear viscosity terms and nonlinear dynamic boundary conditions. The problem is highly nonlinear, characterized by four nonlinearities and two separate diffusive terms, all acting in the interior of the domain or on its boundary. Through a suitable approximation of the problem based on abstract theory of doubly nonlinear evolution equations, existence and uniqueness of solutions are proved using compactness and monotonicity arguments. The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions as the the diffusion operator …
The main purpose of this paper is to study the global propagation of singularities of viscosity solution to discounted Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{equation}\label{eq:discount 1}\tag{HJ$_λ$} λv(x)+H( x, Dv(x) )=0 , \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^n. \end{equation} We reduce the problem for equation \eqref{eq:discount 1} into that for a time-dependent evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We proved that the singularities of the viscosity solution of \eqref{eq:discount 1} propagate along locally Lipschitz singular characteristics which can extend to $+\infty$. We also obtained the homotopy equivalence…
In this paper, we show that the minimal solution of a backward stochastic differential equation gives a probabilistic representation of the minimal viscosity solution of an integro-partial differential equation both with a singular terminal condition. Singularity means that at the final time, the value of the solution can be equal to infinity. Different types of regularity of this viscosity solution are investigated: Sobolev, H{ö}lder or strong regularity.
We introduce the concept of k-strictly convexity to describe the accurate convexity of convex domains some directions of which boundary may be flat. Basing this accurate convexity, we construct sub-solutions the Dirichlet problem for some degenerate-singular Monge-Ampère type equations and prove the sharp boundary estimates for convex viscosity solutions of the problem. As a result, we obtain the optimal global Hölder regularity of the convex viscosity solutions.
We prove that viscosity solutions of geometric equations in step two Carnot groups can be equivalently reformulated by restricting the set of test functions at the singular points. These are characteristic points for the level sets of the solutions and are usually difficult to deal with. A similar property is known in the euclidian space, and in Carnot groups is based on appropriate properties of a suitable homogeneous norm. We also use this idea to extend to Carnot groups the definition of generalised flow, and it works similarly to the euclidian setting. These results simplify the handling o…
We study singular perturbation problems for second order HJB equations in an unbounded setting. The main applications are large deviations estimates for the short maturity asymptotics of stochastic systems affected by a stochastic volatility, where the volatility is modelled by a process evolving at a faster time scale and satisfying some condition implying ergodicity.
Main purpose of this paper is to study the local propagation of singularities of viscosity solution to contact type evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$ D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0. $$ An important issue of this topic is the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the strict singular characteristic. We apply the recent existence and regularity results on the Herglotz' type variational problem to the aforementioned Hamilton-Jacobi equation with smooth initial data. We obtain some new results on the local structure of the cut set of the viscosity solution near non-conjugate singular …
We establish an optimal C^{1,α}-regularity for viscosity solutions of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear elliptic equations by finding minimal regularity requirements on the associated operator.
In this manuscript, we prove existence of viscosity solutions to singular parabolic equations in Carnot groups. We develop the analysis by constructing appropriate deterministic games adapted to the algebraic and differential structures of Carnot groups. We point out that the proof of existence does not require comparison and it is based on an Arzela-Ascoli-type theorem.
We investigate the regularity of the solutions for a class of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. In the degenerate scenario, we establish that there exists at least one viscosity solution of class $C_{loc}^{1, α}$, for some constant $α\in (0, 1)$. In addition, under suitable conditions on $σ$, we prove regularity estimates in Hölder spaces for any viscosity solution. We also examine the singular setting and prove Hölder regularity estimates for the gradient of the solutions.
Singular vorticty solutions of the incompressible 3D-Euler equation are constructed which satisfy the BKM criterion (cf. [2]). The construction is done by inviscid limits of vorticity solutions of transformed incompressible Navier Stokes type equations with a damping potential term, where the latter equations admit a global regular solution for positive viscosity. The inviscid limit vorticity solution of the incompressible Euler vorticity equation becomes singular at a point of the boundary of a finite domain.
We provide an informal overview of recent developments concerning the singular local limit of nonlocal conservation laws. In particular, we discuss some counterexamples to convergence and we highlight the role of numerical viscosity in the numerical investigation of the nonlocal-to-local limit. We also state some open questions and describe recent related progress.
We study in this paper compression effects in heterogeneous media with maximal packing constraint. Starting from compressible Brinkman equations, where maximal packing is encoded in a singular pressure and a singular bulk viscosity, we show that the global weak solutions converge (up to a subsequence) to global weak solutions of the two-phase compressible/incompressible Brinkman equations with respect to a parameter $\varepsilon$ which measures effects close to the maximal packing value. Depending on the importance of the bulk viscosity with respect to the pressure in the dense regimes, memory…
This paper studies the dynamics of two incompressible immiscible fluids in 2D modeled by the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that if initially the viscosity contrast is small then there is global-in-time regularity. This result has been proved recently in [32] for $H^{5/2}$ Sobolev regularity of the interface. Here we provide a new approach which allows to obtain preservation of the natural $C^{1+γ}$ Hölder regularity of the interface for all $0<γ<1$. Our proof is direct and allows for low Sobolev regularity of the initial velocity without any extra technicality. It uses new qu…
