In this paper, we study the compactness of a boundary value problem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds. We show that under certain topological conditions and the positive mean curvature condition on the boundary, a sequence of hyperkaehler triples converges smoothly up to diffeomorphisms if and only if their restrictions to the boundary converge smoothly up to diffeomorphisms. We also generalize this result to torsion-free hypersymplectic triples.
We study the volume growth of hyperkaehler manifolds of type $A_{\infty}$ constructed by Anderson-Kronheimer-LeBrun and Goto. These are noncompact complete 4-dimensional hyperkaehler manifolds of infinite topological type. These manifolds have the same topology but the hyperkaehler metrics are depends on the choice of parameters. By taking a certain parameter, we show that there exists a hyperkaehler manifold of type $A_{\infty}$ whose volume growth is r^a for each 3<a<4.
We generalize the hyperkaehler quotient construction to the situation where there is no group action preserving the hyperkaehler structure but for each complex structure there is an action of a complex group preserving the corresponding complex symplectic structure. Many (known and new) hyperkaehler manifolds arise as quotients in this setting. For example, all hyperkaehler structures on semisimple coadjoint orbits of a complex semisimple Lie group $G$ arise as such quotients of $T^*G$. The generalized Legendre transform construction of Lindstroem and Rocek is also explained in this framework.
We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces
A hyperkaehler manifold with a circle action fixing just one complex structure admits a natural a hyperholomorphic line bundle. This forms the basis for the construction of a corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifold in the work of A.Haydys. We construct in this paper the corresponding holomorphic line bundle on twistor space and compute many examples, including monopole and Higgs bundle moduli spaces. We also show that the bundle on twistor space has a natural meromorphic connection which realizes it as the quantum line bundle for the hyperkaehler family of holomorphic symplectic structures…
We construct examples of compact hyperkaehler manifolds with torsion (HKT manifolds) which are not homogeneous and not locally conformal hyperkaehler. Consider a total space T of a tangent bundle over a hyperkaehler manifold M. The manifold T is hypercomplex, but it is never hyperkaehler, unless M is flat. We show that T admits an HKT-structure. We also prove that a quotient of T by a $\Z$-action $v \arrow q^n v$ is HKT, for any real number $q\in \R$, $q>1$. This quotient is compact, if M is compact. A more general version of this construction holds for all hyperholomorphic bundles with holono…
In this short note we prove that the number of deformation types of compact hyperkaehler manifolds with prescribed second cohomology and second Chern class is finite. The proof uses the finiteness result of Kollar and Matsusaka, a formula by Hitchin and Sawon and the surjectivity of the period map.
A construction is introduced for modifying hyperkaehler manifolds with tri-Hamiltonian circle action, that in favourable situations increases the second Betti number by one. This is based on the symplectic cut construction of Lerman. In 4 or 8 dimensions the construction may be interpreted as adding a D6-brane. A number of examples are given and generalisations to three-Sasaki and hypersymplectic geometry discussed.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we develop a twistor-based method of constructing hyperkaehler metrics from holomorphic functions and elliptic curves. As an application, we revisit the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold and derive in an explicit holomorphic coordinate basis closed-form formulas for, among other things, the metric, the holomorphic symplectic form and all three Kaehler potentials.
Compact hyperkaehler manifolds are higher-dimensional generalizations of K3 surfaces. The classical Global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces, however, does not hold in higher dimensions. More precisely, a compact hyperkaehler manifold is in general not determined by its natural weight-two Hodge structure. The text gives an account of a recent theorem of M. Verbitsky, which can be regarded as a weaker version of the Global Torelli theorem phrased in terms of the injectivity of the period map on the connected components of the moduli space of marked manifolds.
Let M be a compact locally conformal hyperkaehler manifold. We prove a version of Kodaira-Nakano vanishing theorem for M. This is used to show that M admits no holomorphic differential forms, and the cohomology of the structure sheaf $H^i(O_M)$ vanishes for i>1. We also prove that the first Betti number of M is 1. This leads to a structure theorem for locally conformally hyperkaehler manifolds, describing them in terms of 3-Sasakian geometry. Similar results are proven for compact Einstein-Weyl locally conformal Kaehler manifolds.
We study the algebraic dimension a(X) of a compact hyperkaehler manfold of dimension 2n. We show that a(X) is at most n unless X is projective. If a compact Kaehler manifold with algebraic dimension 0 and Kodaira dimension 0 has a minimal model, then only the values 0,n and 2n are possible. In case of middle dimension, the algebraic reduction is holomorphic Lagrangian. If n = 2, then - without any assumptions - the algebraic dimension only takes the values 0,2 and 4. The paper gives structure results for "generalised hyperkaehler" manifolds and studies nef lines bundles.
Paper withdrawn due to errors (superseded by math.AG/0604303). Proposition 11.4 is false, Section 12 is false, and the main statement is true only for bundles $B$ with $c_1(B)$ SU(2)-invariant.
The geometry arising from Michelson & Strominger's study of N=4B supersymmetric quantum mechanics with superconformal D(2,1;alpha)-symmetry is a hyperKaehler manifold with torsion (HKT) together with a special homothety. It is shown that different parameters alpha are related via changes in potentials for the HKT target spaces. For alpha not 0 or -1, we describe how each such HKT 4m-manifold M is derived from a space N of dimension 4m-4 which is quaternionic Kaehler with torsion and carries an Abelian instanton.
Let M be a hyperkaehler manifold, not necessarily compact, and $S\cong CP^1$ the set of complex structures induced by the quaternionic action. Trianalytic subvariety of M is a subvariety which is complex analytic with respect to all $I \in CP^1$. We show that for all $I \in S$ outside of a countable set, all compact complex subvarieties $Z \subset (M,I)$ are trianalytic. For M compact, this result was proven in alg-geom/9403006 using Hodge theory.
We classify those manifolds mentioned in the title which have finite topological type. Namely we show any such connected M is isomorphic to a hyperkaehler quotient of a flat quaternionic vector space by an abelian group. We also show that a compact connected and simply connected 3-Sasakian manifold of dimension 4n-1 whose isometry group has rank n+1 is isometric to a 3-Sasakian quotient of a sphere by a torus. As a corollary, a compact connected quaternion-Kaehler 4n-manifold with positive scalar curvature and isometry group of rank n+1 is isometric to the quaternionic projective space or the …
A holomorphic Lagrangian fibration on a holomorphically symplectic manifold is a holomorphic map with Lagrangian fibers. It is known that a given compact manifold admits only finitely many holomorphic symplectic structures, up to deformation. We prove that a given compact manifold with $b_2 \geq 7$ admits only finitely many deformation types of holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations. We also prove that all known hyperkahler manifolds are never Kobayashi hyperbolic.
Let M be a hypercomplex Hermitian manifold, (M,I) the same manifold considered as a complex Hermitian with a complex structure I induced by the quaternions. The standard linear-algebraic construction produces a canonical nowhere degenerate (2,0)-form on (M,I). It is well known that M is hyperkaehler if and only if the form Ωis closed with respect to the de Rham differential. The M is called HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) if this form is closed with respect to the Dolbeault differential (this condition is weaker. Conjecturally, all compact hypercomplex manifolds admit an HKT-metrics. We exploi…
Let $M$ be the moduli space of complex Lagrangian submanifolds of a hyperKähler manifold $X$, and let $\varpi : \widehat{\mathcal{A}} \rightarrow M$ be the relative Albanese over $M$. We prove that $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ has a natural holomorphic symplectic structure. The projection $\varpi$ defines a completely integrable structure on the symplectic manifold $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$. In particular, the fibers of $\varpi$ are complex Lagrangians with respect to the symplectic form on $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$. We also prove analogous results for the relative Picard over $M$.
Let M be a compact, holomorphically symplectic Kahler manifold, and $η$ a (1,1)-current which is nef (a limit of Kahler forms). Assume that the cohomology class of $η$ is parabolic, that is, its top power vanishes. We prove that all Lelong sets of $η$ are coisotropic. When M is generic, this is used to show that all Lelong numbers of $η$ vanish. We prove that any hyperkahler manifold with Pic(M) of rank 1 has non-trivial coisotropic subvarieties, if a generator of Pic(M) is parabolic.
Let M be a compact simply connected hyperkähler (or holomorphically symplectic) manifold, \dim H^2(M)=n. Assume that M is not a product of hyperkaehler manifolds. We prove that the Lie algebra so(n-3,3) acts by automorphisms on the cohomology ring H^*(M). Under this action, the space H^2(M) is isomorphic to the fundamental representation of so(n-3,3). Let A^r be the subring of H^*(M) generated by H^2(M). We construct an action of the Lie algebra so(n-2,4) on the space A, which preserves A^r. The space A^r is an irreducible representation of so(n-2,4). This makes it possible to compute the ring…
We study the hyperholomorphic line bundle on a hyperkaehler manifold with circle action introduced by A Haydys, and in particular show how it transforms under a hyperkaehler quotient. Applications include ALE spaces and coadjoint orbits.
We consider locally conformal Kaehler geometry as an equivariant (homothetic) Kaehler geometry: a locally conformal Kaehler manifold is, up to equivalence, a pair (K,Γ) where K is a Kaehler manifold and Γa discrete Lie group of biholomorphic homotheties acting freely and properly discontinuously. We define a new invariant of a locally conformal Kaehler manifold (K,Γ) as the rank of a natural quotient of Γ, and prove its invariance under reduction. This equivariant point of view leads to a proof that locally conformal Kaehler reduction of compact Vaisman manifolds produces Vaisman manifolds and…
A hypercomplex structure on a differentiable manifold consists of three integrable almost complex structures that satisfy quaternionic relations. If, in addition, there exists a metric on the manifold which is Hermitian with respect to the three structures, and such that the corresponding Hermitian forms are closed, the manifold is said to be hyperkaehler. In the paper "Non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections", Kaledin and Verbitsky proved that the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold admits a balanced metric; these were first studied in the article "On the existence of special metrics in com…
We define the Kobayashi quotient of a complex variety by identifying points with vanishing Kobayashi pseudodistance between them and show that if a compact complex manifold has an automorphism whose order is infinite, then the fibers of this quotient map are nontrivial. We prove that the Kobayashi quotients associated to ergodic complex structures on a compact manifold are isomorphic. We also give a proof of Kobayashi's conjecture on the vanishing of the pseudodistance for hyperkähler manifolds having Lagrangian fibrations without multiple fibers in codimension one. For a hyperbolic automorphi…
Rozansky and Witten proposed in 1996 a family of new three-dimensional topological quantum field theories, indexed by compact (or asymptotically flat) hyperkaehler manifolds. As a byproduct they proved that hyperkaehler manifolds also give rise to Vassiliev weight systems. These may be thought of as invariants of hyperkaehler manifolds, so the theory is of interest to geometers as well as to low-dimensional topologists. This paper surveys the geometrical construction of the weight systems, how they may be integrated into the framework of Lie algebra weight systems (joint work with Simon Willer…
Let $X$ be a hyperkaehler manifold. Trianalytic subvarieties of $X$ are subvarieties which are complex analytic with respect to all complex structures induced by the hyperkaehler structure. Given a 2-dimensional complex torus $T$, the Hilbert scheme $T^{[n]}$ classifying zero-dimensional subschemes of $T$ admits a hyperkaehler structure. A finite cover of $T^{[n]}$ is a product of $T$ and a simply connected hyperkaehler manifold $K^{[n-1]}$, called generalized Kummer variety. We show that for $T$ generic, the corresponding generalized Kummer variety has no trianalytic subvarieties. This implie…
A trisymplectic structure on a complex 2n-manifold is a triple of holomorphic symplectic forms such that any linear combination of these forms has constant rank 2n, n or 0, and degenerate forms in $Ω$ belong to a non-degenerate quadric hypersurface. We show that a trisymplectic manifold is equipped with a holomorphic 3-web and the Chern connection of this 3-web is holomorphic, torsion-free, and preserves the three symplectic forms. We construct a trisymplectic structure on the moduli of regular rational curves in the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold, and define a trisymplectic reductio…
Let $(M,I,J,K)$ be a hyperkaehler manifold, $\dim_\R M =4n$. We study positive, Dolbeault-closed $(2p,0)$-forms on $(M,I)$. These forms are quaternionic analogues of the positive $(p,p)$-forms. We construct an injective homomorphism mapping Dolbeault-closed $(2p,0)$-forms to closed $(n+p,n+p)$-forms, and positive $(2p,0)$-forms to positive $(n+p,n+p)$-forms. This construction is used to prove a hyperkaehler version of the classical Skoda-El Mir theorem, which says that a trivial extension of a closed, positive current over a pluripolar set is again closed. We also prove the hyperkaehler versio…
In this paper we study the birational geometry of HyperKaehler manifolds by combining the method of minimal model program and the traditional approach of symplectic geometry.
In this paper, we establish some compactness results of conformally compact Einstein metrics on $4$-dimensional manifolds. Our results were proved under assumptions on the behavior of some local and non-local conformal invariants, on the compactness of the boundary metrics at the conformal infinity, and on the topology of the manifolds.
In this paper, we establish compactness results of some class of conformally compact Einstein 4-manifolds. In the first part of the paper, we improve the earlier results obtained by Chang-Ge. In the second part of the paper, as applications, we derive some compactness results under perturbation conditions when the L^2-norm of the Weyl curvature is small. We also derive the global uniqueness of conformally compact Einstein metrics on the 4-Ball constructed in the earlier work of Graham-Lee.
In this paper we prove a compactness theorem for constant mean curvature surfaces with area and genus bound in three manifold with positive Ricci curvature. As an application, we give a lower bound of first eigenvalue of constant mean curvature surfaces in three manifold with positive Ricci curvature.
We prove a lower bound for the first Steklov eigenvalue of embedded minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary in a compact $n$-dimensional manifold which has nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary. When $n=3$, this implies apriori area and curvature estimates for these minimal surfaces in terms of the geometry of the ambient manifold and the topology of the minimal surface. An important consequence of the estimate is a smooth compactness result for embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary when the topological type of these minimal surfaces is fixed.
Gromov and Sormani conjectured that sequences of compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and area of minimal surfaces bounded below should have subsequences which converge in the intrinsic flat sense to limit spaces which have nonnegative generalized scalar curvature and Euclidean tangent cones almost everywhere. In this paper we prove this conjecture for sequences of rotationally symmetric warped product manifolds. We show that the limit spaces have $H^1$ warping function that has nonnegative scalar curvature in a weak sense, and have Euclidean tangent cones almost ever…
In this short paper, we improve the result of Phong-Song-Sturm on degeneration of Fano Kähler-Ricci solitons by removing the assumption on the uniform bound of the Futaki invariant. Let $\mathcal{KR}(n)$ be the space of Kähler-Ricci solitons on $n$-dimensional Fano manifolds. We show that after passing to a subsequence, any sequence in $\mathcal{KR}(n)$ converge in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a Kähler-Ricci soliton on an $n$-dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety with log terminal singularities.
We show that a complete simply-connected hyperkaehler 4-manifold with an isometric triholomorphic circle action is obtained from the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz with some suitable harmonic function.
For a conformally compact Poincaré-Einstein manifold $(X,g_+)$, we consider two types of compactifications for it. One is $\bar{g}=ρ^2g_+$, where $ρ$ is a fixed smooth defining function; the other is the adapted (including Fefferman-Graham) compactification $\bar{g}_s=ρ^2_sg_+$ with a continuous parameter $s>\frac{n}{2}$. In this paper, we mainly prove that for a set of conformally compact Poincaré-Einstein manifolds $\{(X, g_{+}^{(i)})\}$ with conformal infinity of positive Yamabe type, $\{\bar{g}^{(i)}\}$ is compact in $C^{k,α}(\overline{X})$ topology if and only if $\{\bar{g}_s^{(i)}\}$ is …
In this work, we prove a compactness theorem on the space of all Hamiltonian stationay Lagrangian submanifolds in a compact symplectic manifold with uniform bounds on area and total extrinsic curvature.
Let a sequence of conformal Riemannian metrics $\{g_k=u_k^2g_0\}$ be isospectral to $g_0$ over a compact boundaryless smooth 4-dimension manifold $(M,g_0)$. We prove that the subsequence of conformal factors $\{u_k\}$ converges to $u$ weakly in $W^{2,p}_{loc}(M\setminus \mathcal{S})$ for some $p<2$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite set of points and $u\in W^{2,p}(M,g_0)$. Moreover, if the isospectral invariant $\frac{\int_M R(g_k)dV_{g_k}}{6\sqrt{\mathrm{Vol}(M,g_k)}}$ is strictly smaller than the Yamabe constant of the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^4$, then the subsequence of distance functions …
On a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ we extend the known analytic results on Yang-Mills connections to the class of connections called $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections, where $Ω$ is a smooth, not necessarily closed, $(n-4)$-form. Special cases include $Ω$-anti-self-dual connections and Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex manifolds. By a key observation, a weak compactness result is obtained for moduli space of smooth $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections with uniformly $L^2$ bounded curvature, and it can be improved in the case of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex man…
We show that recently constructed invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds and of hyperkaehler manifolds (L.Rozansky and E.Witten, hep-th/9612216) come from characteristic classes of foliations and from Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. In particular, any symplectic foliation gives invariants of 3-manifolds. Our preprint has many intersections with the preprint alg-geom/9704009 by M.Kapranov.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with convex boundary in a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian for closed embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces contained in $Ω$. Using this estimate, we prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded $f$-minimal surfaces with the uniform upper bounds of genus and diameter in a complete $3$-manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant and admitting an exhaustion by bounded doma…
We study the problem of conformal deformation of Riemannian structure to constant scalar curvature with zero mean curvature on the boundary. We prove compactness for the full set of solutions when the boundary is umbilic and the dimension $n \leq 24$. The Weyl Vanishing Theorem is also established under these hypotheses, and we provide counter-examples to compactness when $n \geq 25$. Lastly, our methods point towards a vanishing theorem for the umbilicity tensor, which is anticipated to be fundamental for a study of the nonumbilic case.
We prove that a sequence of Fueter sections of a bundle of compact hyperkahler manifolds $\mathfrak X$ over a $3$-manifold $M$ with bounded energy converges (after passing to a subsequence) outside a $1$-dimensional closed rectifiable subset $S \subset M$. The non-compactness along $S$ has two sources: (1) Bubbling-off of holomorphic spheres in the fibres of $\mathfrak X$ transverse to a subset $Γ\subset S$, whose tangent directions satisfy strong rigidity properties. (2) The formation of non-removable singularities in a set of $\mathcal H^1$-measure zero. Our analysis is based on the ideas an…
We define and study certain hyperkaehler manifolds which capture the asymptotic behaviour of the SU(2)-monopole metric in regions where monopoles break down into monopoles of lower charges. The rate at which these new metrics approximate the monopole metric is exponential, as for the Gibbons-Manton metric.
By Gromov's compactness theorem for metric spaces, every uniformly compact sequence of metric spaces admits an isometric embedding into a common compact metric space in which a subsequence converges with respect to the Hausdorff distance. Working in the class or oriented $k$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (with boundary) and, more generally, integral currents in metric spaces in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim and replacing the Hausdorff distance with the filling volume or flat distance, we prove an analogous compactness theorem in which we replace uniform compactness of the sequence with un…
We investigate compactness phenomena involving free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than eight. We provide natural geometric conditions that ensure strong one-sheeted graphical subsequential convergence, discuss the limit behaviour when multi-sheeted convergence happens and derive various consequences in terms of finiteness and topological control.
We concern $C^2$-compactness of the solution set of the boundary Yamabe problem on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary provided that their dimensions are $4$, $5$ or $6$. By conducting a quantitative analysis of a linear equation associated with the problem, we prove that the trace-free second fundamental form must vanish at possible blow-up points of a sequence of blowing-up solutions. Applying this result and the positive mass theorem, we deduce the $C^2$-compactness for all $4$-manifolds (which may be non-umbilic). For the $5$-dimensional case, we also establish that a sum of …
The cohomology of a compact Kaehler (resp. hyperKaehler) manifold admits the action of the Lie algebra so(2,1) (resp. so(4,1)). In this paper we show, following an idea of Witten, how this action follows from supersymmetry, in particular from the symmetries of certain supersymmetric sigma models. In addition, many of the fundamental identities in Hodge-Lefschetz theory are also naturally derived from supersymmetry.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian three-dimensional manifold with boundary. We prove the compactness of the set of scalar-flat metrics which are in the conformal class of g and have the boundary as a constant mean curvature hypersurface. This involves a blow-up analysis of a Yamabe-type equation with critical Sobolev exponent on the boundary.
In this paper we consider the Hilbert-Einstein-Dirac functional, whose critical points are pairs, metrics-spinors, that satisfy a system coupling the Riemannian and the spinorial part. Under some assumptions, on the sign of the scalar curvature and the diameter, we prove a compactness result for this class of pairs, in dimension three and four. This can be seen as the equivalent of the study of compactness of sequences of Einstein manifolds as in \cite{And0,N}. Indeed, we study the compactness of sequences of critical points of the Hilbert-Einstein-Dirac functional which is an extension of the…
