By Gromov's compactness theorem for metric spaces, every uniformly compact sequence of metric spaces admits an isometric embedding into a common compact metric space in which a subsequence converges with respect to the Hausdorff distance. Working in the class or oriented $k$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (with boundary) and, more generally, integral currents in metric spaces in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim and replacing the Hausdorff distance with the filling volume or flat distance, we prove an analogous compactness theorem in which we replace uniform compactness of the sequence with uniform bounds on volume and diameter.
We prove a compactness theorem for metrics with Bounded Integral Curvature on a fixed closed surface $Σ$. As a corollary, we obtain a compactification of the space of Riemannian metrics with conical singularities, where an accumulation of singularities is allowed.
We prove a compactness result for minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, which can be thought of as an extension of the compactness theorem of Choi-Schoen (Invent. Math. 1985) to higher dimensions.
A compactness theorem is proved for a family of Kähler surfaces with constant scalar curvature and volume bounded from below, diameter bounded from above, Ricci curvature bounded and the signature bounded from below. Furthermore, a splitting theorem and some rigidity theorems are proved for Einstein-Maxwell systems.
In this note we establish several versions of a compactness theorem for submanifolds. In particular we require only bounds on the second fundamental form and do not assume volume or diameter bounds. As an application we prove a compactness theorem for mean curvature flows and use it to construct smooth blow-up limits as singularity models.
We present the Tetrahedral Compactness Theorem which states that sequences of Riemannian manifolds with a uniform upper bound on volume and diameter that satisfy a uniform tetrahedral property have a subsequence which converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a countably $\mathcal{H}^m$ rectifiable metric space of the same dimension. The tetrahedral property depends only on distances between points in spheres, yet we show it provides a lower bound on the volumes of balls. The proof is based upon intrinsic flat convergence and a new notion called the sliced filling volume of a ball.
For Riemannian manifolds with a smooth measure $(M, g, e^{-f}dv_{g})$, we prove a generalized Myers compactness theorem when Bakry--Emery Ricci tensor is bounded from below and $f$ is bounded.
In this paper, we prove the compactness theorem for gradient Ricci solitons. Let $(M_α, g_α)$ be a sequence of compact gradient Ricci solitons of dimension $n\geq 4$, whose curvatures have uniformly bounded $L^{\frac{n}{2}}$ norms, whose Ricci curvatures are uniformly bounded from below with uniformly lower bounded volume and with uniformly upper bounded diameter, then there must exists a subsequence $(M_α, g_α)$ converging to a compact orbifold $(M_{\infty}, g_{\infty})$ with finitly many isolated singularities, where $g_{\infty}$ is a gradient Ricci soliton metric in an orbifold sense.
Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimenion less than eight, we prove a compactness result for the space of closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces satisfying a volume bound and a uniform lower bound on the first eigenvalue of the stability operator. When the latter assumption is replaced by a uniform lower bound on the p-th Jacobi eigenvalue for p greater or equal than 2 one gains strong convergence to a smooth limit submanifold away from at most p-1 points.
In this paper, we establish compactness for various geometric curvature energies including integral Menger curvature, and tangent-point repulsive potentials, defined a priori on the class of compact, embedded $m$-dimensional Lipschitz submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$. It turns out that due to a smoothing effect any sequence of submanifolds with uniformly bounded energy contains a subsequence converging in $C^1$ to a limit submanifold. This result has two applications. The first one is an isotopy finiteness theorem: there are only finitely many isotopy types of such submanifolds below a given e…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with convex boundary in a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian for closed embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces contained in $Ω$. Using this estimate, we prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded $f$-minimal surfaces with the uniform upper bounds of genus and diameter in a complete $3$-manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant and admitting an exhaustion by bounded doma…
Recently, a new embedding/compactness theorem for integral currents in a sequence of metric spaces has been established by the second author. We present a version of this result for locally integral currents in a sequence of pointed metric spaces. To this end we introduce another variant of the Ambrosio--Kirchheim theory of currents in metric spaces, including currents with finite mass in bounded sets.
Let $(M^{n+1},g,e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete smooth metric measure space with $2\leq n\leq 6$ and Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces in $M$ with uniform upper bounds on $f$-index and weighted volume. As a corollary, we obtain a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $2\leq n\leq 6$. We also prove some estimates on the $f$-index of $f$-minimal hypersurfaces, and give a conformal structure of $f$-minimal surface with…
We prove precompactness in an orbifold Cheeger-Gromov sense of complete gradient Ricci shrinkers with a lower bound on their entropy and a local integral Riemann bound. We do not need any pointwise curvature assumptions, volume or diameter bounds. In dimension four, under a technical assumption, we can replace the local integral Riemann bound by an upper bound for the Euler characteristic. The proof relies on a Gauss-Bonnet with cutoff argument.
In this paper, we first prove the $f$-mean curvature comparison in a smooth metric measure space when the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is bounded from below and $|f|$ is bounded. Based on this, we define a Myers-type compactness theorem by generalizing the results of Cheeger, Gromov, and Taylor and of Wan for the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor. Moreover, we improve a result from Soylu by using a weaker condition on a derivative $f'(t)$.
We prove the compactness of self-shrinkers in $\mathbb R^3$ with bounded entropy and fixed genus. As a corollary, we show that numbers of ends of such surfaces are uniformly bounded by the entropy and genus.
We make rigorous an old idea of using mean curvature flow to prove a theorem of Richard Hamilton on the compactness of proper hypersurfaces with pinched, bounded curvature.
In this paper we prove a compactness result for Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature and entropy. It states that given any sequence of such Ricci flows, we can pass to a subsequence that converges to a metric space which is smooth away from a set of codimension $\geq 4$. The result has two main consequences: First, it implies that singularities in Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature have codimension $\geq 4$ and, second, it establishes a general form of the Hamilton-Tian Conjecture, which is even true in the Riemannian case. In the course of the proof, we will also establish the fol…
We prove that for the mean curvature flow of closed embedded hypersurfaces, the intrinsic diameter stays uniformly bounded as the flow approaches the first singular time, provided all singularities are of neck or conical type. In particular, assuming Ilmanen's multiplicity one conjecture and no cylinder conjecture, we conclude that in the two-dimensional case, the diameter always stays bounded. We also obtain sharp $L^{n-1}$ bound for the curvature. The key ingredients for our proof are the Lojasiewicz inequalities by Colding-Minicozzi and Chodosh-Schulze, and the solution of the mean-convex n…
By considering intrinsic geometric conditions, we introduce a new class of domains in complex Euclidean space. This class is invariant under biholomorphism and includes strongly pseudoconvex domains, finite type domains in dimension two, convex domains, $\mathbb{C}$-convex domains, and homogeneous domains. For this class of domains, we show that compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator on $(0,q)$-forms is equivalent to the boundary not containing any $q$-dimensional analytic varieties (assuming only that the boundary is a topological submanifold). We also prove, for this class of d…
In this article, we extend the compactness theorems proved by Sprouse and Hwang-Lee to a weighted manifold under the assumption that the weighted Ricci curvature is bounded below in terms of its weight function. With the help of the $\varepsilon$-range, we treat the case that the effective dimension is at most $1$ in addition to the case that the effective dimension is at least the dimension of the manifold. To show these theorems, we extend the segment inequality of Cheeger-Colding to a weighted manifold.
A fundamental tool in the analysis of Ricci flow is a compactness result of Hamilton in the spirit of the work of Cheeger, Gromov and others. Roughly speaking it allows one to take a sequence of Ricci flows with uniformly bounded curvature and uniformly controlled injectivity radius, and extract a subsequence that converges to a complete limiting Ricci flow. A widely quoted extension of this result allows the curvature to be bounded uniformly only in a local sense. However, in this note we give a counterexample.
In 1996, Shi generalized the epsilon-regularity theorem of Schoen and Uhlenbeck to energy-minimizing harmonic maps from a domain equipped with a bounded measurable Riemannian metric. In the present work we prove a compactness result for such energy-minimizing maps. As an application, we combine our result with Shi's theorem to give an improved bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set, assuming that the map has bounded energy at all scales. This last assumption can be removed when the target manifold is simply-connected.
In this paper we consider the Hilbert-Einstein-Dirac functional, whose critical points are pairs, metrics-spinors, that satisfy a system coupling the Riemannian and the spinorial part. Under some assumptions, on the sign of the scalar curvature and the diameter, we prove a compactness result for this class of pairs, in dimension three and four. This can be seen as the equivalent of the study of compactness of sequences of Einstein manifolds as in \cite{And0,N}. Indeed, we study the compactness of sequences of critical points of the Hilbert-Einstein-Dirac functional which is an extension of the…
Let $ρ_n(V)$ be the number of complete hyperbolic manifolds of dimension n with volume less than $V$. Burger, Gelander, Lubotzky, and Moses showed that when n>3 there exist a,b>0 depending on the dimension such that aV log(V) < log(ρ_n(V)) < bV log(V), for V >> 0. In this note, we use their methods to bound the number of hyperbolic manifolds with diameter less than d and show that the number grows double-exponentially. Additionally, this bound holds in dimension 3.
In this paper we prove the compactness result for compact Kähler Ricci gradient shrinking solitons. If $(M_i,g_i)$ is a sequence of Kähler Ricci solitons of real dimension $n \ge 4$, whose curvatures have uniformly bounded $L^{n/2}$ norms, whose Ricci curvatures are uniformly bounded from below and $μ(g_i,1/2) \ge A$ (where $μ$ is Perelman's functional), there is a subsequence $(M_i,g_i)$ converging to a compact orbifold $(M_{\infty},g_{\infty})$ with finitely many isolated singularitites, where $g_{\infty}$ is a Kähler Ricci soliton metric in an orbifold sense (satisfies a soliton equation aw…
This work proves certain general orbifold compactness results for spaces of Riemannian metrics, generalizing earlier results along these lines for Einstein metrics or metrics with bounded Ricci curvature. This is then applied to prove such compactness for spaces of Bach-flat (for example half-conformally flat) metrics on 4-manifolds, and related results for metrics which are critical points of other natural Riemannian functionals on the space of metrics.
This paper aims to study the $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold. This article shows that a complete and connected Riemannian manifold under certain conditions becomes compact. Also, we have determined an upper bound of the diameter for such a manifold. It is also exhibited that the potential function acquiesces to the Hodge-de Rham potential up to a real constant in an $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold. Later, some triviality and integral conditions are established for a non-compact complete $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold having finite volume. Finally, it is proved that with some certain constrain…
We prove a bubble tree convergence theorem for a sequence of closed Hamiltonian Stationary Lagrangian surfaces with bounded areas and Willmore energies in a complete K{ä}hler surface. We also prove two strong compactness theorems on the space of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb C^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^2$ respectively.
We study integral and pointwise bounds on the second fundamental form of properly immersed self-shrinkers with boundedHA. As applications, we discuss gap and compactness results for self-shrinkers.
In \cite{CM5}, Colding and Minicozzi describe a type of compactness property possessed by sequences of embedded minimal surfaces in $\Real^3$ with finite genus and with boundaries going to $\infty$. They show that any such sequence either contains a sub-sequence with uniformly bounded curvature or the sub-sequence has certain prescribed singular behavior. In this paper, we sharpen their description of the singular behavior when the surfaces have connected boundary. Using this, we deduce certain additional compactness properties of the space of genus-$g$ helicoids.
Two main theorems are proved in this paper. Theorem 1: There is a constant C(n, D) depending only on n and D such that for a closed Riemannian n-manifold satisfying Ric > -(n-1) and Diam < D, the ith bounded Betti number is bounded by C(n, D). Here the ith bounded Betti number is defined as the dimension of the image of the ith bounded cohomology in the ith real cohomology. Theorem 2: There are only finitely many isometric isomorphism types of bounded cohomology groups among closed Riemannian n-manifolds satisfying K > -1 and Diam < D. The dimension of the ith bounded cohomology might be infin…
Let $(M,\bar{g}, e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete metric measure space with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove that, in $M$, there is no complete two-sided $L_f$-stable immersed $f$-minimal hypersurface with finite weighted volume. Further, if $M$ is a 3-manifold, we prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal surfaces in $M$ with the uniform upper bounds of genus and weighted volume, which generalizes the compactness theorem for complete self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by Colding-Minicozzi.
In this paper we prove convergence and compactness results for Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature and entropy. More specifically, we show that Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature converge smoothly away from a singular set of codimension $\geq 4$. We also establish a general form of the Hamilton-Tian Conjecture, which is even true in the Riemannian case. These results are based on a compactness theorem for Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature, which states that any sequence of such Ricci flows converges, after passing to a subsequence, to a metric space that is smooth away fro…
