We prove that the space of free boundary CMC surfaces of bounded topology, bounded area and bounded boundary length is compact in the $C^k$ graphical sense away from a finite set of points. This is a CMC version of a result for minimal surfaces by Fraser-Li \cite{fraser.a-li.m2014}.
With a view to constructing a Morse/Floer homology theory for CMC hypersurfaces, we prove a compactness result modulo broken trajectories for eternal mean curvature flows with forcing term in compact, hyperbolic manifolds.
We develop a bubble-compactness theory for embedded CMC hypersurfaces with bounded index and area inside closed Riemannian manifolds in low dimensions. In particular we show that convergence always occurs with multiplicity one, which implies that the minimal blow-ups (bubbles) are all catenoids. We also provide bounds on the area of separating CMC surfaces of bounded (Morse) index and use this, together with the previous results, to bound their genus.
We give an infinite dimensional generalized Weierstrass representation for spacelike constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in Minkowski 3-space $\real^{2,1}$. The formulation is analogous to that given by Dorfmeister, Pedit and Wu for CMC surfaces in Euclidean space, replacing the group $SU_2$ with $SU_{1,1}$. The non-compactness of the latter group, however, means that the Iwasawa decomposition of the loop group, used to construct the surfaces, is not global. We prove that it is defined on an open dense subset, after doubling the size of the real form $SU_{1,1}$, and prove several results co…
We classify non-minimal biconservative surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field in $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$. When these surfaces do not lie in $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{H}^n$ and they are not vertical cylinders, we find their explicit (local) equation. We also prove a result on the compactness of biconservative surfaces with constant mean curvature in Hadamard manifolds.
We define a Gauss map $γ:M\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{6}$ of an oriented hypersurface $M$ of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{7}$ and prove that $γ$ is harmonic if and only if $M$ has CMC. Results on the geometry and topology of CMC hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^{7}$, under hypothesis on the image of $γ$, are then obtained. By a Hopf symmetrization process we define a Gauss map for hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ and obtain similar results for CMC hypersurfaces of this space.
We give two structural conditions on a codimension $1$ integral $n$-varifold with first variation locally summable to an exponent $p>n$ that imply the following: whenever each orientable portion of the $C^{1}$-embedded part of the varifold (which is non-empty by the Allard regularity theory) is stationarity and the $C^{2}$-immersed part of it is stable with respect to the area functional for volume preserving deformations, its support, except possibly on a closed set of codimension $7$, is an immersed constant-mean-curvature (cmc) hypersurface of class $C^{2}$ that can fail to be embedded only…
We prove that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume does not admit a properly embedded noncompact surface of finite topology with constant mean curvature greater than or equal to 1.
We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal …
In this paper we introduce a flow on the spectral data for symmetric CMC surfaces in the $3$-sphere. The flow is designed in such a way that it changes the topology but fixes the intrinsic (metric) and certain extrinsic (periods) closing conditions of the CMC surfaces. For rational times we obtain closed (possibly branched) connected CMC surfaces of higher genus. We prove the short time existence of this flow near the spectral data of (a class of) CMC tori. In particular we prove that flowing the spectral data for the Clifford torus is equivalent to the flow of Plateau solutions by varying the…
In this paper, we study the space of translational limits T(M) of a surface M properly embedded in R^3 with nonzero constant mean curvature and bounded second fundamental form. There is a natural map T which assigns to any surface M' in T(M), the set T(M') in T(M). Among various dynamics type results we prove that surfaces in minimal T-invariant sets of T(M) are chord-arc. We also show that if M has an infinite number of ends, then there exists a nonempty minimal T-invariant set in T(M) consisting entirely of surfaces with planes of Alexandrov symmetry. Finally, when M has a plane of Alexandro…
We first prove a general gluing theorem which creates new nondegenerate constant mean curvature surfaces by attaching half Delaunay surfaces with small necksize to arbitrary points of any nondegenerate CMC surface. The proof uses the method of Cauchy data matching from \cite{MP}, cf. also \cite{MPP}. In the second part of this paper, we develop the consequences of this result and (at least partially) characterize the image of the map which associates to each complete, Alexandrov-embedded CMC surface with finite topology its associated conformal structure, which is a compact Riemann surface wit…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of geometric models of local isometry classes of locally homogeneous spaces with sectional curvature $|\operatorname{sec}|\leq 1$. Moreover, we show that the set of geometric models is compact in the pointed $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}$-topology.
We prove nonlinear stability for a large class of solutions to the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant and compact spatial topology in arbitrary dimensions, where the spatial metric is Einstein with either positive or negative Einstein constant. The proof uses the CMC Einstein flow and stability follows by an energy argument. We prove in addition that the development of non-CMC initial data close to the background contains a CMC hypersurface, which in turn implies that stability holds for arbitrary perturbations. Furthermore, we construct a one-parameter family of initial …
We prove a lower bound for the first Steklov eigenvalue of embedded minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary in a compact $n$-dimensional manifold which has nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary. When $n=3$, this implies apriori area and curvature estimates for these minimal surfaces in terms of the geometry of the ambient manifold and the topology of the minimal surface. An important consequence of the estimate is a smooth compactness result for embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary when the topological type of these minimal surfaces is fixed.
We provide a measure based topology for certain unions of C2 rectifiable submanifolds of mixed dimensions in Rn. In this topology lower dimensional sets remain in the limit as measures when higher dimensional sets collapse down to them. For example a decreasing sequence of spheres may have a limit consisting of just a point. The n-1 dimensional space of outward pointing vectors can be used for such a measure. It represents all C2 rectifiable sets of codimension at least one of Rn as rectifiable sets in RnXSn-1 with n-1 dimensional Hausdorff measure. When viewed as (n-1)-rectifiable varifolds o…
In this paper, we mainly study the compactness and local structure of immersing surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with local uniform bounded area and small total curvature $\int_{Σ\cap B_1(0)} |A|^2$. A key ingredient is a new quantity which we call isothermal radius. Using the estimate of the isothermal radius we establish a compactness theorem of such surfaces in intrinsic $L^p$-topology and extrinsic $W^{2,2}$-weak topology. As applications, we can explain Leon Simon's decomposition theorem\cite{LS} in the viewpoint of convergence and prove a non-collapsing version of Hélein's convergence theorem\…
In this paper we consider the compactness of $β$-symplectic critical surfaces in a Kähler surface. Let $M$ be a compact Kähler surface and $Σ_i\subset M$ be a sequence of closed $β_i$-symplectic critical surfaces with $β_i\toβ_0\in (0,\infty)$. Suppose the quantity $\int_{Σ_i}\frac{1}{\cos^qα_i}dμ_i$ (for some $q>4$) and the genus of $Σ_{i}$ are bounded, then there exists a finite set of points ${\mathcal S}\subset M$ and a subsequence $Σ_{i'}$ that converges uniformly in the $C^l$ topology (for any $l<\infty$) on compact subsets of $M\backslash {\mathcal S}$ to a $β_0$-symplectic critical sur…
We prove that the family of normal currents in the sense of Rumin in a Carnot group is compact in the flat topology. This result is obtained through a dual compactness argument for Rumin forms, using the pseudo-differential calculus in groups developed by Folland, Christ-Geller-G lowacki-Polin and Rumin. As an application, imitating de Pauw-Moonens-Pfeffer, we describe the space of charges on a Carnot group.
The regularity of limit spaces of Riemannian manifolds with L^p curvature bounds, $p > n/2$, is investigated under no apriori non-collapsing assumption. A regular subset, defined by a local volume growth condition for a limit measure, is shown to carry the structure of a Riemannian manifold. One consequence of this is a compactness theorem for Riemannian manifolds with $L^p$ curvature bounds and an a priori volume growth assumption in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topology. A different notion of convergence is also studied, which replaces the exhaustion by balls in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topo…
The aim of this paper is to extend classic results of the theory of CMC surfaces in the product spaces to the class of immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{M}^2(κ)\times\mathbb{R}$ whose mean curvature is given as a $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We cover topics such as the existence of a priori curvature estimates for graphs, height estimates for horizontal and vertical compact graphs and a structure-type result, which classifies all the simply connected, properly embedded surfaces with finite topology.
For $n\ge 3$, let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $R^n$ and $N$ be a compact Riemannian manifold in $R^L$ without boundary. Suppose that $u_n\in W^{1,n}(Ω,N)$ are the Palais-Smale sequences of the Dirichlet $n$-energy functional and $u_n$ converges weakly in $W^{1,n}$ to a map $u\in W^{1,n}(Ω,N)$. Then $u$ is a $n$-harmonic map. In particular, the space of $n$-harmonic maps is sequentially compact for the weak $W^{1,n}$-topology.
We show compactness in the locally smooth topology for certain natural families of asymptotically conical self-expanding solutions of mean curvature flow. Specifically, we show such compactness for the set of all two-dimensional self-expanders of a fixed topological type and, in all dimensions, for the set of self-expanders of low entropy and for the set of mean convex self-expanders with strictly mean convex asymptotic cones. From this we deduce that the natural projection map from the space of parameterizations of asymptotically conical self-expanders to the space of parameterizations of the…
In this paper, we consider immersed two-sided minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite total curvature. We prove that the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the Jacobi operator is bounded from below by a linear function of the number of ends and the first Betti number of the hypersurface. When $n=4$, we are able to drop the nullity term by a careful study for the rigidity case. Our result is the first effective generalization of Li-Wang. Using our index estimates and ideas from the recent work of Chodosh-Ketover-Maximo, we prove compactness and finiteness results of minimal h…
We introduce a natural definition of $L^p$-convergence of maps, $p \ge 1$, in the case where the domain is a convergent sequence of measured metric space with respect to the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology and the target is a Gromov-Hausdorff convergent sequence. With the $L^p$-convergence, we establish a theory of variational convergences. We prove that the Poincaré inequality with some additional condition implies the asymptotic compactness. The asymptotic compactness is equivalent to the Gromov-Hausdorff compactness of the energy-sublevel sets. Supposing that the targets are $\CAT(0)$-sp…
Let $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ be the set of $n$-dimensional compact Kahler-Einstein manifolds $(X, g)$ satisfying $Ric(g)= - g$ with volume bounded above by $V$. We prove that after passing to a subsequence, any sequence $\{ (X_j, g_j)\}_{j=1}^\infty$ in $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ converges, in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology, to a finite union of complete Kahler-Einstein metric spaces without loss of volume. The convergence is smooth off a closed singular set of Hausdorff dimension no greater than $2n-4$, and the limiting metric space is biholomorphic to an $n$-dimensional semi-log canonical model w…
In this article, we study the Kapustin-Witten equations on a closed, simply-connected, four-dimensional manifold which were introduced by Kapustin and Witten. We use the Taubes' compactness theorem in arXiv:1307.6447v4 to prove that if $(A,ϕ)$ is a smooth solution of Kapustin-Witten equations and the connection $A$ is closed to a $generic$ ASD connection $A_{\infty}$, then $(A,ϕ)$ must be a trivial solution. We also prove that the moduli space of the solutions of Kapustin-Witten equations is non-connected if the connections on the compactification of moduli space of ASD connections are all $ge…
