We classify non-minimal biconservative surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field in $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$. When these surfaces do not lie in $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{H}^n$ and they are not vertical cylinders, we find their explicit (local) equation. We also prove a result on the compactness of biconservative surfaces with constant mean curvature in Hadamard manifolds.
In this article we consider PMC surfaces in complex space forms, and we study the interaction between the notions of PMC, totally real and biconservative. We first consider PMC surfaces in non-flat complex space forms and we prove that they are biconservative if and only if totally real. Then, we find a Simons type formula for a well-chosen vector field constructed from the mean curvature vector field. Next, we prove a rigidity result for CMC biconservative surfaces in 2-dimensional complex space forms. We prove then a reduction codimension result for PMC biconservative surfaces in non-flat co…
In this work we obtain some geometric properties of biconservative surfaces into a Riemannian manifold. In particular, we shall study the relationship between biconservative surfaces and the holomorphicity of a generalized Hopf function. Also, we give a complete classification of CMC biconservative surfaces in a $4$-dimensional space form.
Biconservative surfaces are surfaces with divergence-free stress-bienergy tensor. Simply connected, complete, non-$CMC$ biconservative surfaces in $3$-dimensional space forms were constructed working in extrinsic and intrinsic ways. Then, one raises the question of the uniqueness of such surfaces. In this paper we give a positive answer to this question.
We survey some recent results on biconservative surfaces in $3$-dimensional space forms $N^3(c)$ with a special emphasis on the $c=0$ and $c=1$ cases. We study the local and global properties of such surfaces, from extrinsic and intrinsic point of view. We obtain all non-$CMC$ complete biconservative surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $\mathbb{S}^3$.
We study the uniqueness of complete biconservative surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that the only complete biconservative regular surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are either $CMC$ or certain surfaces of revolution. In particular, any compact biconservative regular surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a round sphere.
We construct simply connected, complete, non-$CMC$ biconservative surfaces in the $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ in an intrinsic and extrinsic way. We obtain three families of such surfaces, and, for each surface, the set of points where the gradient of the mean curvature function does not vanish is dense and has two connected components. In the intrinsic approach, we first construct a simply connected, complete abstract surface and then prove that it admits a unique biconservative immersion in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Working extrinsically, we use the images of the explicit parametric…
In this paper we consider the complete biconservative surfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ and in the unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$. Biconservative surfaces in 3-dimensional space forms are characterized by the fact that the gradient of their mean curvature function is an eigenvector of the shape operator, and we are interested in studying local and global properties of such surfaces with non-constant mean curvature function. We determine the simply connected, complete Riemannian surfaces that admit biconservative immersions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $\mathbb{S}^3$. Moreover, such imm…
In this paper, we study biconservative surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector in $\mathbb{E}^4$. We obtain complete local classification in $\mathbb{E}^4$ for a biconservative PNMCV surface. We also give an example to show the existence of PNMCV biconservative surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^4$.
In this paper, we study biconservative submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ with parallel mean curvature vector field and co-dimension 2. We obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for such submanifolds to be conservative. In particular, we obtain a complete classification of 3-dimensional biconservative submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{4}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{4}\times \mathbb{R}$ with nonzero parallel mean curvature vector field. We also get some results for biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\…
In this paper, we study biconservative hypersurfaces in $\mathbb S^{n}$ and $\mathbb H^{n}$. Further, we obtain complete explicit classification of biconservative hypersurfaces in $4$-dimensional Riemannian space form with exactly three distinct principal curvatures.
Our paper is an attempt to to verify the Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds and to classify biconservative submanifolds. In doing so we provide an affirmative answer to Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds. We prove that every biconservative Lorentz hypersurface $M_{1}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{E}_{1}^{n+1}$ having complex eigenvalues has constant mean curvature. Moreover, every biharmonic Lorentz hypersurface $M_{1}^{n}$ having complex eigenvalues in $\mathbb{E}_{1}^{n+1}$ must be minimal.
In this paper, we study biconservative hypersurfaces in the four dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb E^4_1$. We give the complete explicit classification of biconservative hypersurfaces with diagonalizable shape operator in $\mathbb E^4_1$.
In this paper, we study biconservative surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field ($PNMC$) in the $4$-dimensional unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^4$. First, we study the existence and uniqueness of such surfaces. We obtain that there exists a $2$-parameter family of non-isometric abstract surfaces that admit a (unique) $PNMC$ biconservative immersion in $\mathbb{S}^4$. Then, we obtain the local parametrization of these surfaces in the $5$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^5$.
In this paper, using the framework of equivariant differential geometry, we study proper $SO(p+1) \times SO(q+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+q+2$) and proper $SO(p+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+2$). Moreover, we show that, in these two classes of invariant families, there exists no proper biharmonic immersion.
In this paper, we study biconservative hypersurfaces of index 2 in $\mathbb E^{5}_{2}$. We give the complete classification of biconservative hypersurfaces with diagonalizable shape operator at exactly three distinct principal curvatures. We also give an explicit example of biconservative hypersurfaces with four distinct principal curvatures.
In this paper we generalize the Local Removable Singularity Theorem in [16] for minimal laminations to the case of weak $H$-laminations (with $H\in \mathbb{R}$ constant) in a punctured ball of a Riemannian three-manifold. We also obtain a curvature estimate for any weak CMC foliation (with possibly varying constant mean curvature from leaf to leaf) of a compact Riemannian three-manifold $N$ with boundary solely in terms of a bound of the absolute sectional curvature of $N$ and of the distance to the boundary of $N$. We then apply these results to classify weak CMC foliations of $\mathbb{R}^3$ …
In this note we discuss graphs over a domain $Ω\subset N^2$ in the product manifold $N^2\times \mathbb{R}$. Here $N^2$ is a complete Riemannian surface and $Ω$ has peice-wise smooth boundary. Let $γ\subset\partialΩ$ be a smooth connected arc and $Σ$ be a complete graph in $N^2\times \mathbb{R}$ over $Ω$. We show that if $Σ$ is a minimal or translating graph, then $γ$ is a geodesic in $N^2$. Moreover if $Σ$ is a CMC graph, then $γ$ has constant principle curvature in $N^2$. This explains the infinity value boundary condition upon domains having Jenkins-Serrin theorems on minimal and CMC graphs …
In this paper, we prove a half-space theorem with respect to constant mean curvature $1/2$ entire graphs in $\mathbb{E(-1,τ)}$. If $Σ$ is such an entire graph and $Σ'$ is a properly immersed constant mean curvature $1/2$ surface included in the mean convex side of $Σ$ then $Σ'$ is a vertical translate of $Σ$. We also have an equivalent statement for the non mean convex side of $Σ$.
Inspired by the work of Heller [12], we show that there exists a DPW potential for the Lawson surface $ξ_{k-1, l-1}$ from which it is possible to reconstruct the minimal immersion $f: ξ_{k-1, l-1} \to \mathbb{S}^3$ via the DPW method. Moreover, we extend the result to surfaces immersed in the 3-sphere with constant mean curvature which satisfy a certain symmetric condition.
Let ${\mathscr F}(N\times \mathbb{R})$ be the set of all closed $H$-hypersurfaces $M\subset N\times \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a simply connected complete Riemannian $n$-manifold with sectional curvature $K_{N}\leq -κ^{2}<0$. We show that ${\Hm}(N\times \mathbb{R})=\inf_{M\in {\mathscr F}(N\times \mathbb{R})}\{| H_{M}| \}\geq (n-1)κ/n $.
A triharmonic map is a critical point of the tri-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^n (n\ge 4)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$ with four distinct principal curvatures and the multiplicity of the zero principal curvature is at most one, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. In particular, we obtain any CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^5(c)$ is minimal when $c\le 0$, which supports the generalized Chen's conjecture. We also give some characterizations of CMC pr…
We define a Gauss map $γ:M\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{6}$ of an oriented hypersurface $M$ of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{7}$ and prove that $γ$ is harmonic if and only if $M$ has CMC. Results on the geometry and topology of CMC hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^{7}$, under hypothesis on the image of $γ$, are then obtained. By a Hopf symmetrization process we define a Gauss map for hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ and obtain similar results for CMC hypersurfaces of this space.
Let $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n+1}$ \ be the half-space model of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}.$ It is proved that if $Γ\subset\left\{ x_{n+1}=0\right\} \subset\partial_{\infty}\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ is a bounded $C^{0}$ Euclidean graph over $\left\{ x_{1}=0,\text{ }x_{n+1}=0\right\} $ then, given $\left\vert H\right\vert <1,$ there is a complete, properly embedded, CMC $H$ hypersurface $Σ$ of $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ such that $\partial_{\infty }S=Γ\cup\left\{ x_{n+1}=+\infty\right\} .$ This result can be seen as a limit case of the existence theorem proved by B. Guan and J. Spruck in \cite{GS} on CMC $…
It is proved that the holomorphic quadratic differential associated to CMC surfaces in Riemannian products $\mathbb{S}^2\times\Rr$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times \Rr$ discovered by U. Abresch and H. Rosenberg could be obtained as a linear combination of usual Hopf differentials. Using this fact, we are able to extend it for Lorentzian products. Families of examples of helicoidal CMC surfaces on these spaces are explicitly described. We also present some characterizations of CMC rotationally invariant discs and spheres. Finally, after establish some height and area estimates, we prove the existence of…
It is known that for $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$ an unbounded convex domain and $H>0$, there exists a graph $G\subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ of constant mean curvature $H$ over $Ω$ with $\partial G=$ $\partial Ω$ if and only if $Ω$ is included in a strip of width $1/H$. In this paper we obtain results in $\mathbb{H}^{2}\times \mathbb{R}$ in the same direction: given $H\in \left( 0,1/2\right) $, if $Ω$ is included in a region of $\mathbb{ H}^{2}\times \left\{ 0\right\} $ bounded by two equidistant hypercycles $\ell(H)$ apart, we show that, if the geodesic curvature of $\partial Ω$ is bounded from below …
Constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in space forms can be described by their associated $\mathbb C^*$-family of flat $SL(2,\mathbb C)$-connections $\nabla^λ$. In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior (for $λ\to0$) of the gauge equivalence classes of $\nabla^λ$ for compact CMC surfaces of genus $g\geq2.$ We prove (under the assumption of simple umbilics) that the asymptotic behavior of the traces of the monodromy representation of $\nabla^λ$ determines the conformal type as well as the Hopf differential locally in the Teichmüller space.
Given $H\in [0,\infty),$ some sufficient conditions for existence of CMC $H$ graphs with boundary in two parallel planes of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ are presented. Height estimates for outwards-oriented CMC surfaces (horo)cyllindrically bounded are also exhibited.
This thesis lies in the field of constant mean curvature (cmc) hypersurfaces and specifically cmc $1/2$ surfaces in the three-manifold $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. The value $1/2$ is the critical mean curvature for $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, in that there do no exist closed cmc surfaces with mean curvature $1/2$ or less. Daniel and Hauswirth have constructed a one-parameter family of complete, cmc $1/2$ annuli that are symmetric about a reflection in the horizontal plane $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \{0\}$, the horizontal catenoids. In this thesis we prove that these catenoids converge to a si…
In the present paper we give a geometric proof for the existence of cylinders with constant mean curvature $H>H(X)$ in certain simply connected homogeneous three-manifolds $X$ diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$, which always admit a Lie group structure. Here, $H(X)$ denotes the critical value for which constant mean curvature spheres in $X$ exist. Our cylinders are generated by a simple closed curve under a one-parameter group of isometries, induced by left translations along certain geodesics. In the spaces $\operatorname{Sol}_3$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{PSL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ we establish ex…
We prove a theorem about elliptic operators with symmetric potential functions, defined on a function space over a closed loop. The result is similar to a known result for a function space on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These theorems provide accurate numerical methods for finding the spectra of those operators over either type of function space. As an application, we numerically compute the Morse index of constant mean curvature tori of revolution in the unit 3-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, confirming that every such torus has Morse index at least five, and showing that other kno…
In this paper we study triharmonic hypersurfaces immersed in a space form $N^{n+1}(c)$. We prove that any proper CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the sphere $\mathbb S^{n+1}$ has constant scalar curvature; any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^{n+1}$ is minimal. Moreover, we show that any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ is minimal provided that the multiplicity of the principal curvature zero is at most one. In particular, we are able to prove that every CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{6}$ is min…
Let $g$ be a smooth Riemannian metric on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $H>0$ a constant. We establish an upper bound for the corresponding Bartnik mass $\mathfrak m_B(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ assuming that the Gauss curvature $K_g$ is non-negative. Our upper bound approaches the Hawking mass $\mathfrak m_H(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ when either $g$ becomes round or else $H\to 0$, the bound is zero for $H$ sufficiently large, and in any case the bound is not more than $r/2=\mathfrak m_H(\mathbb{S}^2, g, 0)$. We obtain upper bounds on $\mathfrak m_B(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ as well in the case when $g$ is arbitrary and …
A $k$-harmonic map is a critical point of the $k$-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^{n} (n\ge 3)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface with at most three distinct principal curvatures in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. This supports the generalized Chen's conjecture when $c\le 0$. When $c=1$, we give an optimal upper bound of the mean curvature $H$ for a non-totally umbilical proper CMC $k$-harmonic hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a sphere. As an application, we …
Constant mean curvature surfaces in $S^3$ can be studied via their associated family of flat connections. In the case of tori this approach has led to a deep understanding of the moduli space of all CMC tori. For compact CMC surfaces of higher genus the theory is far more involved due to the non abelian nature of their fundamental group. In this paper we extend the spectral curve theory for tori developed in \cite{Hi, PiSt} and for genus $2$ surfaces \cite{He3} to CMC surfaces in $S^3$ of genus $g=k\cdot l$ with commuting $\mathbb Z_{k+1}$ and $\mathbb Z_{l+1}$ symmetries. We determine their a…
It is known that complex constant mean curvature ({\sc CMC} for short) immersions in $\mathbb C^3$ are natural complexifications of {\sc CMC}-immersions in $\mathbb R^3$. In this paper, conversely we consider {\it real form surfaces} of a complex {\sc CMC}-immersion, which are defined from real forms of the twisted $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)$ loop algebra $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$, and classify all such surfaces according to the classification of real forms of $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$. There are seven classes of surfaces, which are called {\it integrable surfaces}, and all int…
Constant mean curvature (CMC) tori in Euclidean 3-space are described by an algebraic curve, called the spectral curve, together with a line bundle on this curve and a point on $ S ^ 1 $, called the Sym point. For a given spectral curve the possible choices of line bundle and Sym point are easily described. The space of spectral curves of tori is totally disconnected. Hence to characterise the "moduli space" of CMC tori one should, for each genus $g$, determine the closure $\overline{\mathcal{P}^g}$ of spectral curves of CMC tori within the spectral curves of CMC planes having spectral genus $…
We describe the construction of CMC surfaces with symmetries in $\mathbb S^3$ and $\mathbb R^3$ using a CMC quadrilateral in a fundamental tetrahedron of a tessellation of the space. The fundamental piece is constructed by the generalized Weierstrass representation using a geometric flow on the space of potentials.
We prove that a spacelike spherical symmetric constant mean curvature (SSCMC) surface and a general spacelike constant mean curvature (CMC) surface with certain boundary condition at the future null-infinity in Schwarzschild spacetime are asymptotically hyperbolic in the sense of Wang \cite{Wang2001} and Chruściel-Herzlich \cite{ChruscielHerzlich} respectively. Near the future null-infinity ($s=0$), we derive that the boundary data of spacelike CMC surfaces can be expressed as those on $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ up to three order and obtain a compatibility condition for fourth order derivatives near $s=…
