It is known that for $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$ an unbounded convex domain and $H>0$, there exists a graph $G\subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ of constant mean curvature $H$ over $Ω$ with $\partial G=$ $\partial Ω$ if and only if $Ω$ is included in a strip of width $1/H$. In this paper we obtain results in $\mathbb{H}^{2}\times \mathbb{R}$ in the same direction: given $H\in \left( 0,1/2\right) $, if $Ω$ is included in a region of $\mathbb{ H}^{2}\times \left\{ 0\right\} $ bounded by two equidistant hypercycles $\ell(H)$ apart, we show that, if the geodesic curvature of $\partial Ω$ is bounded from below by $-1,$ then there is an $H$-graph $G$ over $Ω$ with $\partial G=\partial Ω$. We also present more refined existence results involving the curvature of $\partialΩ,$ which can also be less than $-1.$
We classify non-minimal biconservative surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field in $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$. When these surfaces do not lie in $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{H}^n$ and they are not vertical cylinders, we find their explicit (local) equation. We also prove a result on the compactness of biconservative surfaces with constant mean curvature in Hadamard manifolds.
In this paper we generalize the Local Removable Singularity Theorem in [16] for minimal laminations to the case of weak $H$-laminations (with $H\in \mathbb{R}$ constant) in a punctured ball of a Riemannian three-manifold. We also obtain a curvature estimate for any weak CMC foliation (with possibly varying constant mean curvature from leaf to leaf) of a compact Riemannian three-manifold $N$ with boundary solely in terms of a bound of the absolute sectional curvature of $N$ and of the distance to the boundary of $N$. We then apply these results to classify weak CMC foliations of $\mathbb{R}^3$ …
In this note we discuss graphs over a domain $Ω\subset N^2$ in the product manifold $N^2\times \mathbb{R}$. Here $N^2$ is a complete Riemannian surface and $Ω$ has peice-wise smooth boundary. Let $γ\subset\partialΩ$ be a smooth connected arc and $Σ$ be a complete graph in $N^2\times \mathbb{R}$ over $Ω$. We show that if $Σ$ is a minimal or translating graph, then $γ$ is a geodesic in $N^2$. Moreover if $Σ$ is a CMC graph, then $γ$ has constant principle curvature in $N^2$. This explains the infinity value boundary condition upon domains having Jenkins-Serrin theorems on minimal and CMC graphs …
In this paper, we prove a half-space theorem with respect to constant mean curvature $1/2$ entire graphs in $\mathbb{E(-1,τ)}$. If $Σ$ is such an entire graph and $Σ'$ is a properly immersed constant mean curvature $1/2$ surface included in the mean convex side of $Σ$ then $Σ'$ is a vertical translate of $Σ$. We also have an equivalent statement for the non mean convex side of $Σ$.
Inspired by the work of Heller [12], we show that there exists a DPW potential for the Lawson surface $ξ_{k-1, l-1}$ from which it is possible to reconstruct the minimal immersion $f: ξ_{k-1, l-1} \to \mathbb{S}^3$ via the DPW method. Moreover, we extend the result to surfaces immersed in the 3-sphere with constant mean curvature which satisfy a certain symmetric condition.
Let ${\mathscr F}(N\times \mathbb{R})$ be the set of all closed $H$-hypersurfaces $M\subset N\times \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a simply connected complete Riemannian $n$-manifold with sectional curvature $K_{N}\leq -κ^{2}<0$. We show that ${\Hm}(N\times \mathbb{R})=\inf_{M\in {\mathscr F}(N\times \mathbb{R})}\{| H_{M}| \}\geq (n-1)κ/n $.
A triharmonic map is a critical point of the tri-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^n (n\ge 4)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$ with four distinct principal curvatures and the multiplicity of the zero principal curvature is at most one, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. In particular, we obtain any CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^5(c)$ is minimal when $c\le 0$, which supports the generalized Chen's conjecture. We also give some characterizations of CMC pr…
We define a Gauss map $γ:M\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{6}$ of an oriented hypersurface $M$ of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{7}$ and prove that $γ$ is harmonic if and only if $M$ has CMC. Results on the geometry and topology of CMC hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^{7}$, under hypothesis on the image of $γ$, are then obtained. By a Hopf symmetrization process we define a Gauss map for hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ and obtain similar results for CMC hypersurfaces of this space.
Let $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n+1}$ \ be the half-space model of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}.$ It is proved that if $Γ\subset\left\{ x_{n+1}=0\right\} \subset\partial_{\infty}\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ is a bounded $C^{0}$ Euclidean graph over $\left\{ x_{1}=0,\text{ }x_{n+1}=0\right\} $ then, given $\left\vert H\right\vert <1,$ there is a complete, properly embedded, CMC $H$ hypersurface $Σ$ of $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ such that $\partial_{\infty }S=Γ\cup\left\{ x_{n+1}=+\infty\right\} .$ This result can be seen as a limit case of the existence theorem proved by B. Guan and J. Spruck in \cite{GS} on CMC $…
It is proved that the holomorphic quadratic differential associated to CMC surfaces in Riemannian products $\mathbb{S}^2\times\Rr$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times \Rr$ discovered by U. Abresch and H. Rosenberg could be obtained as a linear combination of usual Hopf differentials. Using this fact, we are able to extend it for Lorentzian products. Families of examples of helicoidal CMC surfaces on these spaces are explicitly described. We also present some characterizations of CMC rotationally invariant discs and spheres. Finally, after establish some height and area estimates, we prove the existence of…
Constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in space forms can be described by their associated $\mathbb C^*$-family of flat $SL(2,\mathbb C)$-connections $\nabla^λ$. In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior (for $λ\to0$) of the gauge equivalence classes of $\nabla^λ$ for compact CMC surfaces of genus $g\geq2.$ We prove (under the assumption of simple umbilics) that the asymptotic behavior of the traces of the monodromy representation of $\nabla^λ$ determines the conformal type as well as the Hopf differential locally in the Teichmüller space.
Given $H\in [0,\infty),$ some sufficient conditions for existence of CMC $H$ graphs with boundary in two parallel planes of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ are presented. Height estimates for outwards-oriented CMC surfaces (horo)cyllindrically bounded are also exhibited.
This thesis lies in the field of constant mean curvature (cmc) hypersurfaces and specifically cmc $1/2$ surfaces in the three-manifold $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. The value $1/2$ is the critical mean curvature for $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, in that there do no exist closed cmc surfaces with mean curvature $1/2$ or less. Daniel and Hauswirth have constructed a one-parameter family of complete, cmc $1/2$ annuli that are symmetric about a reflection in the horizontal plane $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \{0\}$, the horizontal catenoids. In this thesis we prove that these catenoids converge to a si…
In the present paper we give a geometric proof for the existence of cylinders with constant mean curvature $H>H(X)$ in certain simply connected homogeneous three-manifolds $X$ diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$, which always admit a Lie group structure. Here, $H(X)$ denotes the critical value for which constant mean curvature spheres in $X$ exist. Our cylinders are generated by a simple closed curve under a one-parameter group of isometries, induced by left translations along certain geodesics. In the spaces $\operatorname{Sol}_3$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{PSL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ we establish ex…
We prove a theorem about elliptic operators with symmetric potential functions, defined on a function space over a closed loop. The result is similar to a known result for a function space on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These theorems provide accurate numerical methods for finding the spectra of those operators over either type of function space. As an application, we numerically compute the Morse index of constant mean curvature tori of revolution in the unit 3-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, confirming that every such torus has Morse index at least five, and showing that other kno…
In this paper we study triharmonic hypersurfaces immersed in a space form $N^{n+1}(c)$. We prove that any proper CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the sphere $\mathbb S^{n+1}$ has constant scalar curvature; any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^{n+1}$ is minimal. Moreover, we show that any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ is minimal provided that the multiplicity of the principal curvature zero is at most one. In particular, we are able to prove that every CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{6}$ is min…
Let $g$ be a smooth Riemannian metric on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $H>0$ a constant. We establish an upper bound for the corresponding Bartnik mass $\mathfrak m_B(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ assuming that the Gauss curvature $K_g$ is non-negative. Our upper bound approaches the Hawking mass $\mathfrak m_H(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ when either $g$ becomes round or else $H\to 0$, the bound is zero for $H$ sufficiently large, and in any case the bound is not more than $r/2=\mathfrak m_H(\mathbb{S}^2, g, 0)$. We obtain upper bounds on $\mathfrak m_B(\mathbb{S}^2, g, H)$ as well in the case when $g$ is arbitrary and …
A $k$-harmonic map is a critical point of the $k$-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^{n} (n\ge 3)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface with at most three distinct principal curvatures in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. This supports the generalized Chen's conjecture when $c\le 0$. When $c=1$, we give an optimal upper bound of the mean curvature $H$ for a non-totally umbilical proper CMC $k$-harmonic hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a sphere. As an application, we …
It is known that complex constant mean curvature ({\sc CMC} for short) immersions in $\mathbb C^3$ are natural complexifications of {\sc CMC}-immersions in $\mathbb R^3$. In this paper, conversely we consider {\it real form surfaces} of a complex {\sc CMC}-immersion, which are defined from real forms of the twisted $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)$ loop algebra $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$, and classify all such surfaces according to the classification of real forms of $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$. There are seven classes of surfaces, which are called {\it integrable surfaces}, and all int…
Constant mean curvature (CMC) tori in Euclidean 3-space are described by an algebraic curve, called the spectral curve, together with a line bundle on this curve and a point on $ S ^ 1 $, called the Sym point. For a given spectral curve the possible choices of line bundle and Sym point are easily described. The space of spectral curves of tori is totally disconnected. Hence to characterise the "moduli space" of CMC tori one should, for each genus $g$, determine the closure $\overline{\mathcal{P}^g}$ of spectral curves of CMC tori within the spectral curves of CMC planes having spectral genus $…
We describe the construction of CMC surfaces with symmetries in $\mathbb S^3$ and $\mathbb R^3$ using a CMC quadrilateral in a fundamental tetrahedron of a tessellation of the space. The fundamental piece is constructed by the generalized Weierstrass representation using a geometric flow on the space of potentials.
We prove that a spacelike spherical symmetric constant mean curvature (SSCMC) surface and a general spacelike constant mean curvature (CMC) surface with certain boundary condition at the future null-infinity in Schwarzschild spacetime are asymptotically hyperbolic in the sense of Wang \cite{Wang2001} and Chruściel-Herzlich \cite{ChruscielHerzlich} respectively. Near the future null-infinity ($s=0$), we derive that the boundary data of spacelike CMC surfaces can be expressed as those on $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ up to three order and obtain a compatibility condition for fourth order derivatives near $s=…
In this paper, we can prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the constant mean curvature (CMC for short) equation with nonzero Neumann boundary data in product manifold $M^{n}\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq2$) complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, and $\mathbb{R}$ is the Euclidean $1$-space. Equivalently, this conclusion gives the existence of CMC graphic hypersurfaces defined over a compact strictly convex domain $Ω\subset M^{n}$ and having arbitrary contact angle.
In this work, we consider $M=(\mathbb{B}^3_r,\bar{g})$ as the Euclidean three-ball with radius $r$ equipped with the metric $\bar{g}=e^{2h}\left\langle , \right\rangle$ conformal to the Euclidean metric. We show that if a free boundary CMC surface $Σ$ in $M$ satisfies a pinching condition on the length of the traceless second fundamental tensor which involves the support function of $Σ$, the positional conformal vector field $\vec{x}$ and its potential function $σ,$ then either $Σ$ is a disk or $Σ$ is an annulus rotationally symmetric. In a particular case, we construct an example of minimal s…
Given $\varepsilon_0>0$, $I\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ and $K_0,H_0\geq0$, let $X$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with injectivity radius $\mbox{Inj}(X)\geq \varepsilon_0$ and with the supremum of absolute sectional curvature at most $K_0$, and let $M \looparrowright X$ be a complete immersed surface of constant mean curvature $H\in [0,H_0]$ with index at most $I$. For such $M \looparrowright X$, we prove Structure Theorem 1.2 which describes how the interesting ambient geometry of the immersion is organized locally around at most $I$ points of $M$ where the norm of the second fundamental…
Let $g$ be a metric on the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ with positive Gaussian curvature and $H$ be a positive constant. Under suitable conditions on $(g, H)$, we construct smooth, asymptotically flat $3$-manifolds $M$ with non-negative scalar curvature, with outer-minimizing boundary isometric to $(\mathbb{S}^2, g)$ and having mean curvature $H$, such that near infinity $M$ is isometric to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold whose mass $m$ can be made arbitrarily close to a constant multiple of the Hawking mass of $(\mathbb{S}^2,g,H)$. Moreover, this constant multiplicative factor depends only on $…
In this paper, firstly, we show the existence of a compact embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurface $Σ_1$ in $\mathbb{S}^{2n}$ of the type $S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{1}$. Moreover, the hypersurface $Σ_1$ exhibits $O(n)\times O(n)$ symmetry. Secondly, we show that there exists a compact embedded CMC-hypersurface $Σ_2 \subset \mathbb{S}^{3n-1}$ of the type $S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{1}$. These results generalize the results of Carlotto and Schulz.
The exterior differential system for constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in a 3-dimensional space form is an elliptic Monge-Ampere system defined on the unit tangent bundle. We determine the infinite sequence of higher-order symmetries and conservation laws via an enhanced prolongation modelled on a loop algebra valued formal Killing field. As a consequence we establish Noether's theorem for the CMC system and there is a canonical isomorphism between the symmetries and conservation laws. A geometric interpretation of the $\mathbb{S}^{1}$-family of associate surfaces leads to an integrable e…
The aim of this paper is to extend classic results of the theory of CMC surfaces in the product spaces to the class of immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{M}^2(κ)\times\mathbb{R}$ whose mean curvature is given as a $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We cover topics such as the existence of a priori curvature estimates for graphs, height estimates for horizontal and vertical compact graphs and a structure-type result, which classifies all the simply connected, properly embedded surfaces with finite topology.
The purpose of this paper is to study immersed surfaces in the product spaces $\mathbb{M}^2(κ)\times\mathbb{R}$, whose mean curvature is given as a $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. This class of surfaces extends widely, among others, the well-known theory of surfaces with constant mean curvature. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of prescribed mean curvature spheres, and we describe complete surfaces of revolution proving that they behave as the Delaunay surfaces of CMC type.
Given $r_0>0$, $I\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ and $K_0,H_0\geq 0$, let $X$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with injectivity radius $\mbox{Inj}(X)\geq r_0$ and with the supremum of absolute sectional curvature at most $K_0$, and let $M\looparrowright X$ be a complete immersed surface of constant mean curvature $H\in [0,H_0]$ and with index at most $I$. We will obtain geometric estimates for such an $M\looparrowright X$ as a consequence of the Hierarchy Structure Theorem in [9]. The Hierarchy Structure Theorem (see Theorem 2.2 below) will be applied to understand global properties of $M\loopa…
We show that constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$, with small and pinched boundary contained in a horizontal slice $P$ are topological disks, provided they are contained in one of the two halfspaces determined by $P$. This is the analogous in $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$ of a result in $\mathbb R^3$ by A. Ros and H. Rosenberg.
In this paper we use the Alexandrov Reflection Method to obtain a characterization to embedded CMC capillary annulus $Σ^2 \subset \mathbb{B}^3$. In especial, but using a new strategy, we present a new characterization to the critical catenoid. Precisely, we show that $Σ\subset \mathbb{B}^3$ being an embedded minimal free boundary annulus in $\mathbb{B}^3$ such that $\partial Σ$ is invariant under reflection through a coordinates planes, then $Σ$ is the critical catenoid. This work is part of the second author thesis which was written in 2019.
In this paper, we discuss complete minimal immersions in $\mathbb{R}^N$($N\geq4$) with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. First, we prove nonexistence for the following cases: (1) genus 1 with 2 embedded planar ends, (2) genus $\neq4$, hyperelliptic with 2 embedded planar ends like the Lagrangian catenoid. Then we show the existence of embedded minimal spheres in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with 3 embedded planar ends. Moreover, we construct genus $g$ examples in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with $d$ embedded planar ends such that $g\geq 1$ and $g+2\leq d\leq 2g+1$. These examples include a family of embed…
