We describe the construction of CMC surfaces with symmetries in $\mathbb S^3$ and $\mathbb R^3$ using a CMC quadrilateral in a fundamental tetrahedron of a tessellation of the space. The fundamental piece is constructed by the generalized Weierstrass representation using a geometric flow on the space of potentials.
For a manifold with an affine connection, we prove formulas which infinitesimally quantify the gap in a certain naturally defined open geodesic quadrilateral associated to a pair of tangent vectors $u$, $v$ at a point of the manifold. We show that the 1st order infinitesimal obstruction to the quadrilateral to close is always zero, the 2nd order infinitesimal obstruction to the quadrilateral to close is $-T(u,v)$ where $T$ is the torsion tensor of the connection, and if $T = 0$ then the 3rd order infinitesimal obstruction to the quadrilateral to close is $(1/2)R(u,v)(u+v)$ in terms of the curv…
The square-peg problem asks if every Jordan curve in the plane has four points which are the vertices of a square. The problem is open for continuous Jordan curves, but it has been resolved for various regularity classes of curves between continuous and $C^1$-smooth Jordan curves. Here, in a generalization of the square-peg problem, we consider embedded curves in space, and ask if they have inscribed quadrilaterals with equal sides and equal diagonals. We call these quadrilaterals "square-like". We give a regularity class (finite total curvature without cusps) in which we can prove that every …
We introduce fourth fundamental form $IV,$ and $i$-th curvature formulas of hypersurfaces in the four dimensional Euclidean geometry ${\mathbb{E}}^{4}$. Defining fourth fundamental form and $i$-th curvatures for hypersurfaces, we calculate them on rotational hypersurface. In addition we study rotational hypersurface satisfying $Δ^{IV}\mathbf{x=Ax}$ for some $4\times 4$ matrix $\mathbf{A.}$
This paper presents an investigation of the relation between some positivity of the curvature and the finiteness of fundamental groups in semi-Riemannian geometry. We consider semi-Riemannian submersions $π: (E, g) \rightarrow (B, -g_{B}) $ under the condition with $(B, g_{B})$ Riemannian, the fiber closed Riemannian, and the horizontal distribution integrable. Then we prove that, if the lightlike geodesically complete or timelike geodesically complete semi-Riemannian manifold $E$ has some positivity of curvature, then the fundamental group of the fiber is finite. Moreover we construct an exam…
Let M be a Riemannian n-manifold with n greater than or equal to 3. For k between 1 and n, we say M has k-positive Ricci curvature if at every point of M the sum of any k eigenvalues of the Ricci curvature is strictly positive. In particular, one positive Ricci curvature is equivalent to positive Ricci curvature and n-positive Ricci curvature is equivalent to positive scalar curvature. Let G be the fundamental group of the closed manifold M. We say that G is virtually free if G contains a free subgroup of finite index, or equivalently, if some finite cover of M has a fundamental group that is …
We construct a sequence of smooth minimizing surfaces in a sequence of metrics converging to the standard Euclidean metric, so that they have diverging $L^2$ norm of second fundamental form.
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the traceless part of the second fundamental form of a complete constant mean curvature hypersurface immersed in a space of constant sectional curvature in order to show that it is totally umbilical.
