A central theme in Riemannian geometry is understanding the relationships between the curvature and the topology of a Riemannian manifold. Positive isotropic curvature (PIC) is a natural and much studied curvature condition which includes manifolds with pointwisequarter-pinched sectional curvatures and manifolds with positive curvature operator. By results of Micallef and Moore there is only one topological type of compact simply connected manifold with PIC; namely any such manifold must be homeomorphic to the sphere. On the other hand, there is a large class of nonsimply connected manifolds with PIC. An important open problem has been to understand the result in this direction. We show that the fundamental group of a compact manifold M^n with PIC, n geq 5, does not contain a subgroup isomorphic to \mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}. The techniques used involve minimal surfaces.
In this short paper, we establish a closer relation between the Berwald scalar curvature and the $S$-curvature. In fact, we prove that a Finsler metric has isotropic Berwald scalar curvature if and only if it has weakly isotropic $S$-curvature. For Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature and of weakly isotropic $S$-curvature, they have almost isotropic $S$-curvature if and only if the flag curvature is weakly isotropic.
In this paper, we study the Randers metrics of weakly isotropic scalar curvature. We prove that a Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature must be of isotropic $S$-curvature. Further, we prove that a conformally flat Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature is either Minkowskian or Riemannian.
We classify translation surfaces in isotropic geometry with arbitrary constant isotropic Gaussian and mean curvature under the condition that at least one of translating curves lies in a plane.
In this paper we prove the path connectedness of the moduli spaces of metrics with positive isotropic curvature on certain compact four-dimensional manifolds.
Using a method introduced by R. Bamler to study the behavior of scalar curvature under continuous deformations of Riemannian metrics, we prove that if a sequence of smooth Riemannian metrics gi on a fixed compact manifold M has isotropic curvature bounded from below by a nonnegative function u, and if gi converge in C 0 norm to a smooth metric g, then g has isotropic curvature bounded from below by u. The proof also works for various other bounds from below on the curvature, such has non-negative curvature operator.
In this paper, we study factorable surfaces in a 3-dimensional isotropic space. We classify such surfaces with constant isotropic Gaussian (K) and mean curvature (H). We provide a non-existence result related with the surfaces satisfying H/K=const. Several examples are also illustrated.
In this paper, we study a class of Finsler metrics called general $(α,β)$-metrics, which are defined by a Riemannian metric $α$ and a $1$-form $β$. We classify this class of Finsler metrics with isotropic Berwald curvature under certain condition.
In this paper, we investigate the spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with isotropic S-curvature and obtain a characterized equation. As an application, we prove that these metrics with Douglas type must be Randers metrics or Berwald metrics. This result leads to two classification theorems.
We study two types of isotropic planes: weakly isotropic and strongly isotropic planes. We prove that a Riemannian manifold of indefinite metric is conformally flat if and only if its curvature tensor vanishes on all the strongly isotropic planes. We specialize the plane axiom for Riemannian manifolds of indefinite metrics. We show that manifolds satisfying plane axiom of weakly (strongly) isotropic planes are of constant sectional curvature (conformaly flat). Further we study analogous problems on almost Hermitian manifolds of indefinite metrics.
Isotropic almost complex structures induce a class of Riemannian metrics on tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. In this paper the curvature tensors of these metrics will be calculated.
We show that a closed orientable Riemannian $n$-manifold, $n \ge 5$, with positive isotropic curvature and free fundamental group is homeomorphic to the connected sum of copies of $S^{n-1} \times S^1$.
In this paper, we find a condition on $(α, β)$-metrics under which the notions of isotropic S-curvature, weakly isotropic S-curvature and isotropic mean Berwald curvature are equivalent.
In this paper we study the topology of compact manifolds of positive isotropic curvature (PIC). There are many examples of non-simply connected compact manifolds with positive isotropic curvature. We prove that the fundamental group of a compact Riemannian manifold with PIC, of dimension greater than or equal to 5, does not contain a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface. The proof uses stable minimal surface theory.
Every Finsler metric naturally induces a spray but not so for the converse. The notion for sprays of scalar (resp. isotropic) curvature has been known as a generalization for Finsler metrics of scalar (resp. isotropic) flag curvature. In this paper, a new notion, sprays of constant curvature, is introduced and especially it shows that a spray of isotropic curvature is not necessarily of constant curvature even in dimension $n\ge3$. Further, complete conditions are given for sprays of isotropic (resp. constant) curvature to be Finsler-metrizabile. As applications of such a result, the local str…
In the current paper, first we give the correct version of the formula for mean Berwald curvature of a spherically symmetric Finsler metric given in paper \cite{YCheWSon2015}. Further, we establish differential equations characterizing projectively as well as dually flat spherically symmetric Finsler metrics. Finally, we obtain a rigidity result on spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with isotropic $E$-Curvature.
We prove a conjecture of Gromov's to the effect that manifolds with isotropic curvature bounded below by 1 (after possibly rescaling) are macroscopically 1-dimensional on the scales greater than 1. As a consequence we prove that compact manifolds with positive isotropic curvature have virtually free fundamental groups. Our main technique is modeled on Donaldson's version of Hörmander technique to produce (almost) holomorphic sections which we use to construct destabilizing sections.
We show that a four-dimensional complete gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with positive isotropic curvature is either a quotient of S^4 or a quotient of S^3 cross R. This gives a clean classification result removing the earlier additional assumptions in [13] by Wallach and the second author.
We study a positivity condition for the curvature of oriented Riemannian 4-manifolds: The half-$PIC$ condition. It is a slight weakening of the positive isotropic curvature ($PIC$) condition introduced by M. Micallef and J. Moore. We observe that the half-$PIC$ condition is preserved by the Ricci flow and satisfies a maximality property among all Ricci flow invariant positivity conditions on the curvature of oriented 4-manifolds. We also study some geometric and topological aspects of half-$PIC$ manifolds.
Let $(M^n,g)$, $n \ge 4$, be a compact simply-connected Riemannian manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature. Given $0<l\le L$, we prove that there exists $\eps = \eps (l,L,n)$ satisfying the following: If the scalar curvature $s$ of $g$ satisfies $$ l \le s \le L $$ and the Einstein tensor satisfies $$ | Ric - \frac {s}{n}g | \le \eps$$ then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a symmetric space of compact type. This is a smooth analogue of the result of S. Brendle that a compact Einstein manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature is isometric to a locally symmetric space.
An $(α,β)$-metric is defined by a Riemannian metric and $1$-form. In this paper, we investigate the known characterization for $(α,β)$-metrics of isotropic S-curvature. We show that such a characterization should hold in dimension $n\ge 3$, and for the 2-dimensional case, there is one more class of isotropic S-curvature than the higher dimensional ones. Further, we construct corresponding examples for every two-dimensional class, especially for the class that the norm of $β$ with respect to $α$ is not a constant.
In this paper, we construct a new class of Finsler manifolds called generalized isotropic Berwald manifolds which is an extension of the class of isotropic Berwald manifolds. We prove that every generalized isotropic Berwald manifold is a generalized Douglas-Weyl manifold. On a compact generalized isotropic Berwald manifold, we show that the notions of stretch and Landsberg curvatures are equivalent. Then we prove that on these manifolds, a Finsler metric is R-quadratic if and only if it is a stretch metric with vanishing E -curvature. Finally, we determine the flag curvature of generalized is…
We classify complete orientable hypersurfaces of constant isotropic curvature in space forms. We show that such a hypersurface has constant mean curvature only if it is an isoparametric hypersurface, and that it is minimal if and only if it is totally geodesic or it is the Clifford minimal hypersurface ${\mathbb S}^{3}(\frac{4c}{3})\times {\mathbb S}^{1}(4c)$ in ${\mathbb S}^{5}(c).$
In this paper, we give a complete classification of critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$ having positive isotropic curvature. We prove that for a pair $(f, κ)$ of a nontrivial smooth function $f: M \to {\Bbb R}$ and a nonnegative real number $κ$, if $(M, g)$ having positive isotropic curvature satisfies $$ Ddf - (Δf)g - f{\rm Ric} = κg, $$ then $(M, g)$ is isometric to a geodesic ball in ${\Bbb S}^n$ when $κ>0$, and either $M$ isometric to ${\Bbb S}^n_+$, or the product $I \times {\Bbb S}^{n-1}$, up to finite cover when $κ=0$.
There exist four non-equivalent types of the translation hypersurfaces in the 4-dimensional isotropic space $\mathbb{I}^{4}$ generated by translating the curves lying in perpendicular $k-$planes $\left(k=2,3\right)$, due to its absolute figure. In arbitrary dimensional case; constant Gauss-Kronecker and mean curvature translation hypersurfaces of type 1, i.e. the hypersurfaces whose the translating curves lie in perpendicular isotropic $2- $planes, were investigated by the same authors in \cite{AO}. The present study concerns such hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{I}^{4}$ of other three types.
We prove that if $(M^n,g)$, $n \ge 4$, is a compact, orientable, locally irreducible Riemannian manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature, then one of the following possibilities hold: (i) $M$ admits a metric with positive isotropic curvature (ii) $(M,g)$ is isometric to a locally symmetric space (iii) $(M,g)$ is Kähler and biholomorphic to $\C P^\frac {n}{2}$. (iv) $(M,g)$ is quaternionic-Kähler. This is implied by the following result: Let $(M^{2n},g)$ be a compact, locally irreducible Kähler manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature. Then either $M$ is biholomorphic to $\C P^n$ or i…
We show that in dimensions $n \geq 12$, a non-flat complete gradient shrinking solitons with uniformly positive isotropic curvature (PIC) must be a quotient of either the round sphere $S^n$ or the cylinder $S^{n-1} \times \mathbb{R}$. We also observe that in dimensions $n \geq 5$, a complete gradient shrinking soliton that is strictly PIC and weakly PIC2 must be a quotient of either the round sphere $S^n$ or the cylinder $S^{n-1} \times \mathbb{R}$.
In this paper we study the Ricci flow on compact four-manifolds with positive isotropic curvature and with no essential incompressible space form. Our purpose is two-fold. One is to give a complete proof of Hamilton's classification theorem on four-manifolds with positive isotropic curvature and with no essential incompressible space form; the other is to extend some recent results of Perelman on the three-dimensional Ricci flow to four-manifolds. During the the proof we have actually provided, up to slight modifications, all necessary details for the part from Section 1 to Section 5 of Perelm…
We show that no exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ admits a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive isotropic curvature and with bounded geometry. This is essentially a corollary of the main result in [Hu1], and was stated in [Hu2] without proof. In the process of the proof we also show that the diffeomorphism type of an infinite connected sum of some connected smooth $n$-manifolds ($n\geq 2$) according to a locally finite graph does not depend on the gluing maps used.
In this paper we study invariant almost Hermitian geometry on generalized flag manifolds which the isotropy representation decompose into two or three irreducible components. We will provide a classification of such flag manifolds admitting Kähler like scalar curvature metric, that is, almost Hermitian structures $(g,J)$ satisfying $s=2s_C$ where $s$ is Riemannian scalar curvature and $s_C$ is the Chern scalar curvature.
The isotropic 3-space I^3 which is one of the Cayley--Klein spaces is obtained from the Euclidean space by substituting the usual Euclidean distance with the isotropic distance. In the present paper, we give several classifications on the surfaces in I^3 with the constant relative curvature (analogue of the Gaussian curvature) and the constant isotropic mean curvature. In particular, we classify the helicoidal surfaces in I^3 with constant curvature and analyze some special curves on these.
The critical point equation arises as a critical point of the total scalar curvature functional defined on the space of constant scalar curvature metrics of a unit volume on a compact manifold. In this equation, there exists a function $f$ on the manifold that satisfies the following $$ (1+f){\rm Ric} = Ddf + \frac{nf +n-1}{n(n-1)}sg. $$ It has been conjectured that if $(g, f)$ is a solution of the critical point equation, then $g$ is Einstein and so $(M, g)$ is isometric to a standard sphere. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is true if the given Riemannian metric has positive isotr…
Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature play an important role to show the complexity and richness of general Finsler metrics. In this paper, on an $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ we study the Finsler metric $F=F(x,y)$ of scalar flag curvature ${\bf K} = {\bf K}(x,y)$ and discover some equations ${\bf K}$ should be satisfied. As an application, we mainly study the metric $F$ of weakly isotropic flag curvature ${\bf K} = \frac{3 θ}{F} + σ$, where $θ=θ_i(x) y^i \neq 0$ is a $1$-form and $σ=σ(x)$ is a scalar function. We prove that in this case, $F$ must be a Randers metric when $dim(M) \geq 3$. Fu…
In this paper, we study the rotational surfaces in the isotropic 3-space I^3. satisfying Weingarten conditions in terms of the relative curvature K (analogue of the Gaussian curvature) and the isotropic mean curvature H. In particular, we classify such surfaces of linear Weingarten type in I^3.
In this study, we deal with the local structure of curves and surfaces immersed in a pseudo-isotropic space I_{p}^{3} that is a particular Cayley-Klein space. We provide the formulas of curvature, torsion and Frenet trihedron in order for spacelike and timelike curves. The causal character of all admissible surfaces in I_{p}^{3} has to be timelike or lightlike up to its absolute. We introduce the formulas of Gaussian and mean curvature for timelike surfaces in I_{p}^{3}. As applications, we describe the surfaces of revolution which are the orbits of a plane curve under a hyperbolic rotation wi…
In this paper we consider some properties of the three-dimensional homogeneous SO(2)-isotropic Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we determine the geodesics, the totally geodesic surfaces, the totally umbilical surfaces and the geodesics of the rotational surfaces.
We show that every $n$-dimensional, $κ$-noncollapsed, noncompact, complete ancient solution to the Ricci flow with uniformly PIC for $n=4$ or $n\ge 12$ has weakly PIC$_2$ and bounded curvature. Combining this with earlier results, we prove that any such solution is isometric to either a family of shrinking cylinders (or a quotient thereof) or the Bryant soliton. Also, we classify all complex 2-dimensional, $κ$-noncollapsed, complete ancient solutions to the Kähler Ricci flow with weakly PIC.
In this note we prove the following result: Let $X$ be a complete, connected 4-manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature, with bounded geometry and with no essential incompressible space form. Then $X$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{S}^4$, or $\mathbb{RP}^4$, or $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{S}^1$, or $\mathbb{S}^3\widetilde{\times} \mathbb{S}^1$, or a possibly infinite connected sum of them. This extends work of Hamilton and Chen-Zhu to the noncompact case. The proof uses Ricci flow with surgery on complete 4-manifolds, and is inspired by recent work of Bessi$\grave{e}$res, Besson and …
In this paper, the concept of isotropic projective Ricci curvature has been investigated. By classification of Randers metric of isotropic projective Ricci curvature, it is shown that Randers metric of projective Ricci curvature is reversible if and only if it is of square projective Ricci curvature.
In this paper we study warped product Finsler metrics and show that the notion of isotropic $E$-curvature and isotropic $S$-curvature are equivalent for this class of metrics.
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold and suppose $p\in M$. For each unit vector $v \in T_p M$, the $\textit{Jacobi operator}$, $\mathcal{J}_v: v^\perp \rightarrow v^\perp$ is the symmetric endomorphism, $\mathcal{J}_v(w) = R(w,v)v$. Then $p$ is an $\textit{isotropic point}$ if there exists a constant $κ_p \in \mathbf{R}$ such that $\mathcal{J}_v = κ_p \textit{ Id}_{v^\perp}$ for each unit vector $v \in T_pM$. If all points are isotropic, then $M$ is said to be isotropic; it is a classical result of Schur that isotropic manifolds of dimension at least 3 have constant sectional curvatures. …
We prove the following result: Let $(X,g_0)$ be a complete, connected 4-manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature and with bounded geometry. Then there is a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of manifolds of the form $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{R} /G$, where $G$ is a discrete subgroup of the isometry group of the round cylinder $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ on which $G$ acts freely, such that $X$ is diffeomorphic to a possibly infinite connected sum of $\mathbb{S}^4,\mathbb{RP}^4$ and members of $\mathcal{F}$. This extends recent work of Chen-Tang-Zhu and Huang. We also extend the a…

In this paper, we define some non-Riemannian curvature properties for Cartan spaces. We consider Cartan space with the m-th root metric. We prove that every m-th root Cartan space of isotropic Landsberg curvature, or isotropic mean Landsberg curvature, or isotropic mean Berwald curvature reduces to a Landsberg, weakly Landsberg and weakly Berwald space, respectively. Then we show that m-th root Cartan space of almost vanishing H-curvature satisfies H = 0.
In this paper, we study the second approximate Matsumoto metric on a manifold M. We prove that F is of scalar flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature if and only if it is isotropic Berwald metric with almost isotropic flag curvature.
In this paper, we prove two rigidity results for non-positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. Our first main result yields an extension of Hu-Deng's well-known result proven for the Randers metrics. Indeed, we prove that every connected homogeneous Finsler space with non-positive flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We extend the Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces and show that homogeneous isotropic Berwald metrics with non-positive flag curvature are Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We prove that a homogeneous $(α, β)$-metrics has i…
