We investigate the local geometry of a class of Kähler submanifolds $M \subset \R^n$ which generalize surfaces of constant mean curvature. The role of the mean curvature vector is played by the $(1,1)$-part (i.e. the $dz_id\bar z_j$-components) of the second fundamental form $α$, which we call the pluri-mean curvature. We show that these Kähler submanifolds are characterized by the existence of an associated family of isometric submanifolds with rotated second fundamental form. Of particular interest is the isotropic case where this associated family is trivial. We also investigate the properties of the corresponding Gauss map which is pluriharmonic.
We define broadly-pluriminimal immersed 2n-submanifold F: M --> N into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold of complex dimension 2n and scalar curvature R. We prove that, if M is compact, n \geq 2, and R < 0, then: (i) Either F has complex or Lagrangian directions; (ii) If n = 2, M is oriented, and F has no complex directions, then it is a Lagrangian submanifold, generalising the well-known case n = 1 for minimal surfaces due to Wolfson. We also prove that, if F has constant Kaehler angles with no complex directions, and is not Lagrangian, then R = 0 must hold. Our main tool is a formula on the Laplaci…
In the present paper, we study the hemi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds. We study the integrability of distributions involved in the definition of hemi-slant submanifolds. some results are worked out on totally umbilical hemi-slant submanifolds. we study the cohomology class for hemi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds.
In the present paper, we obtain the basic Chen inequalities for submanifolds of quaternion Kaehler-like statistical manifolds. Also, we discuss the same inequality for Lagrangian submanifolds.
We consider $F: M \to N$ a minimal oriented compact real 2n-submanifold M, immersed into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold N of complex dimension 2n, and scalar curvature R. We assume that $n \geq 2$ and F has equal Kaehler angles. Our main result is to prove that, if n = 2 and $R \neq 0$, then F is either a complex submanifold or a Lagrangian submanifold. We also prove that, if $n \geq 3$ and F has no complex points, then: (A) If R < 0, then F is Lagrangian; (B) If R = 0, the Kaehler angle must be constant. We also study pluriminimal submanifolds with equal Kaehler angles, and prove that, if they a…
By making use of the symplectic reduction and the cohomogeneity method, we give a general method for constructing Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in Kaehler manifolds with symmetries. As applications, we construct infinitely many nontrivial complete Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in CP^n and C^n.
B. Y. Chen established sharp inequalities between certain Riemannian invariants and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds in real space form as well as in complex space form. In this paper we generalize Chen inequalities for submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifolds. Moreover, we consider CR-warped product submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifold and establish an inequality for scalar curvature.
It is known that there exist no warped product semi-slant submanifolds in Kaehler manifolds \cite{Sahin}. Recently, Chen and Garay studied pointwise-slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds in \cite{CG} and obtained many new results for such submanifolds. In this paper, we first introduce pointwise semi-slant submanifolds of Kaehler manifolds and then we show that there exists non-trivial warped product pointwise semi-slant submanifolds of Kaehler manifold by giving an example, contrary to the semi-slant case. We present a characterization theorem and establish an inequality for the sq…
The purpose of the present paper is to study the differential geometric properties of a quaternion CR-submanifold in a locally conformal quaternion Kaehler manifold.
We prove that under certain conditions on the mean curvature and on the Kaehler angles, a compact submanifold M of real dimension 2n, immersed into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold N of complex dimension 2n, must be either a complex or a Lagrangian submanifold of N, or have constant Kaehler angle, depending on n=1, n=2, or n \geq 3, and the sign of the scalar curvature of N. These results generalize to non-minimal submanifolds some known results for minimal submanifolds. Our main tool is a Bochner-type technique involving a formula on the Laplacian of a symmetric function on the Kaehler angles and …
In this paper, we investigate Lagrangian submanifolds in the nearly Kaehler $S^3 \times S^3$. We construct a new example which is a at Lagrangian torus. We give a complete classification of all the Lagrangian immersions of spaces of constant sectional curvature in the nearly Kaehler $S^3\times S^3$.
In this paper, authors have established Chen's inequalities for the submanifolds of quaternionic Kaehler manifolds characterized by Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection. Other than these inequalities, we have also derived generalized normalized Casorati curvature inequalities for the same submanifolds.
In this paper, we prove that, if a full irreducible infinite dimensional anti-Kaehler isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one has $J$-diagonalizable shape operators, then it is homogeneous.
Non-existence of warped product semi-slant submanifolds of Kaehler manifolds was proved in [17], it is interesting to find their existence. In this paper, we prove the existence of warped product semi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds by a characterization. To this end we obtain an inequality for the squared norm of second fundamental form in terms of the warping function and the slant angle. The equality case is also discussed.
We introduce a new class of lightlike submanifolds, namely, Screen Transversal Cauchy Riemann (STCR)-lightlike submanifolds, of indefinite Kaehler manifolds. We show that this new class is an umbrella of screen transversal lightlike, screen transversal totally real lightlike and CR-lightlike submanifolds. We give a few examples of a STCR lightlike submanifold, investigate the integrability of various distributions, obtain a characterization of such lightlike submanifolds in a complex space form and find new conditions for the induced connection to be a metric connection. Moreover, we investiga…
For a Legendrian submanifold $M$ of a Sasaki manifold $N$, we study harmonicity and biharmonicity of the corresponding Lagrangian cone submanifold C(M) of a Kaehler manifold C(N). We show that, if $C(M)$ is biharmonic in C(N), then it is harmonic; and $M$ is proper biharmonic in $N$ if and only if C(M) has a non-zero eigen-section of the Jacobi operator with the eigenvalue $m=dim M$.
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+\ell}$, $n \geq 5$, denote a conformal immersion into Euclidean space with codimension $\ell$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n$ and free of flat points. For codimensions $\ell=1,2$ we show that such a submanifold can always be locally obtained in a rather simple way, namely, from an isometric immersion of the Kaehler manifold $M^{2n}$ into either $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$, the latter being a class of submanifolds already extensively studied.
Warped product manifolds have been studied for a long period of time. In contrast, the study of warped product submanifolds from extrinsic point of view was initiated by the first author around the beginning of this century in [7, 8]. Since then the study of warped product submanifolds has been investigated by many geometers. The notion of slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds was introduced in [5]. Bi-slant submanifolds in almost contact metric manifolds were defined in [4] by J. L. Cabrerizo et al. In [26], we studied bi-slant submanifolds and warped product bi-slant submanifolds …
In the present paper, we introduce screen almost semi-invariant (SASI) lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Keahler manifolds. We obtain the neccesary and sufficient condition for the induced connection to be a metric connection on SASI-lightlike submanifolds and construct an example for this manifold. Also we find some conditions for integrability of distributions and investigate certain characterizations.
Let $M$ be a real $l$-dimensional minimal submanifold with flat normal connection in a kaehler product manifold $\overline{M}^m\times \overline{M}^n$ where $\overline{M}^m$ and $\overline{M}^n$ are complex $m$-dimensional and complex $n$-dimensional kaehler manifolds with constant holomorphic sectional curvature $c_1$ and $c_2$ respectively. We give a formula for the Laplacian of the second fundamental form of $M$. Specially we discuss the F-anti invariant case. We also give some applications of this formula.
In this paper, we prove that, if a full irreducible infinite dimensional anti-Kaehler isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one has $J$-diagonalizable shape operators, then it is an orbit of the action of a Banach Lie group generated by one-parameter transformation groups induced by holomorphic Killing vector fields defined entirely on the ambient Hilbert space.
We show that generic rank conditions on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+p}$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 2$ into Euclidean space with low codimension $p$ implies that the submanifold has to be minimal. If $M^{2n}$ if simply connected, this amounts to the existence of a one-parameter associated family of isometric minimal immersions unless $f$ is holomorphic.
We present several local and global results on isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds $M^{2n}$ into hyperbolic space $\Hy^{2n+p}$. For instance, a classification is given in the case of dimension $n\geq 4$ and codimension $p=2$. Moreover, as corollaries of general results, we conclude that there are no isometric immersion in codimension $p\leq n-2$ if the Kaehler manifold is of dimension $n\geq 4$ and either has a point of positive holomorphic sectional curvature or is compact.
We study bi-warped product submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds which are the natural extension of warped products. We prove that every bi-warped product submanifold of the form $M=M_T\times_{f_1}\! M_\perp\times_{f_2}\! M_θ$ in a nearly Kaehler manifold satisfies the following sharp inequality: $$\|h\|^2\geq 2p\|\nabla (\ln f_1)\|^2+4q\left(1+{\small \frac{10}{9}}\cot^2θ\right)\|\nabla(\ln f_2)\|^2,$$ where $p=\dim M_\perp$, $q=\frac{1}{2}\dim M_θ$, and $f_1,\,f_2$ are smooth positive functions on $M_T$. We also investigate the equality case of this inequality. Further, some applications …
The warped product $N_1\times_f N_2$ of two Riemannian manifolds $(N_1,g_1)$ and $(N_2,g_2)$ is the product manifold $N_1\times N_2$ equipped with the warped product metric $g=g_1+f^2 g_2$, where $f$ is a positive function on $N_1$. Warped products play very important roles in differential geometry as well as in physics. A submanifold $M$ of a Kaehler manifold $\tilde M$ is called a $CR$-warped product if it is a warped product $M_T\times_f N_\perp$ of a complex submanifold $M_T$ and a totally real submanifold $M_\perp$ of $\tilde M$. In this article we survey recent results on warped product …
Given a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension 4, we consider submanifolds of (real) dimension 4, whose Kaehler angles coincide. We call these submanifolds Cayley. We investigate some of their basic properties, and prove that (a) if the ambient manifold is a Calabi-Yau, the minimal Cayley submanifolds are just the Cayley submanifolds as defined by Harvey and Lawson; (b) if the ambient is a Kaehler-Einstein manifold of non-zero scalar curvature, then minimal Cayley submanifolds have to be either complex or Lagrangian.
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ be an isometric immersion of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 5$ into Euclidean space with complex rank at least $5$ everywhere. Our main result is that, along each connected component of an open dense subset of $M^{2n}$, either $f$ is holomorphic in $\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}\cong\mathbb{C}^{n+2}$ or it is in a unique way a composition $f=F\circ h$ of isometric immersions. In the latter case, we have that $h\colon M^{2n}\to N^{2n+2}$ is holomorphic and $F\colon N^{2n+2}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ belongs to the class, by now quite well understood, of n…
The properties of Kaehler submanifolds with recurrent the second fundamental form in spaces of constant holomorphic sectional curvature are being studied in this article.
In generalized complex geometry, we revisit linear subspaces and submanifolds that have an induced generalized complex structure. We give an expression of the induced structure that allows us to deduce a smoothness criteria, we dualize the results to submersions and we make a few comments on generalized complex mappings. Then, we discuss submanifolds of generalized Kaehler manifolds that have an induced generalized Kaehler structure. These turn out to be the common invariant submanifolds of the two classical complex structures of the generalized Kaehler manifold.
In this paper we show that two Kähler manifolds which do not share a Kähler submanifold, do not share either a Levi degenerate CR-submanifold with constant dimension Levi kernel. In particular, they do not share a CR-product. Further, we obtain that a Levi degenerate CR-submanifold of $\mathbb C^n$ cannot be isometrically immersed into a flag manifold.
Given a minimal Lagrangian submanifold L in a negative Kaehler--Einstein manifold M, we show that any small Kaehler--Einstein perturbation of M induces a deformation of L which is minimal Lagrangian with respect to the new structure. This provides a new source of examples of minimal Lagrangians. More generally, the same is true for the larger class of totally real J-minimal submanifolds in Kaehler manifolds with negative definite Ricci curvature.
This paper consists of two main results. In the first one we describe all Kaehler immersions of a bounded symmetric domain into the infinite dimensional complex projective space in terms of the Wallach set of the domain. In the second one we exhibit an example of complete and non-homogeneous Kaehler-Einstein metric with negative scalar curvature which admits a Kaehler immersion into the infinite dimensional complex projective space.
Concerning the problem of classifying complete submanifolds of Euclidean space with codimension two admitting genuine isometric deformations, until now the only known examples with the maximal possible rank four are the real Kaehler minimal submanifolds classified by Dajczer-Gromoll \cite{dg3} in parametric form. These submanifolds behave like minimal surfaces, namely, if simple connected either they admit a nontrivial one-parameter associated family of isometric deformations or are holomorphic. In this paper, we characterize a new class of complete minimal genuinely deformable Euclidean subma…
A Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifold of a Kaehler manifold is a Lagrangian submanifold whose volume is stationary under Hamiltonian variations. We find a sufficient condition on the curvature of a Kaehler manifold of real dimension four that guarantees the existence of a family of small Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian tori.
Austere submanifolds of Euclidean space were introduced in 1982 by Harvey and Lawson in their foundational work on calibrated geometries. In general, the austerity condition is much stronger than minimality since it express that the nonzero eigenvalues of the shape operator of the submanifold appear in opposite pairs for any normal vector at any point. Thereafter, the challenging task of finding non-trivial explicit examples, other than minimal immersions of Kaehler manifolds, only turned out submanifolds of rank two, and these are of limited interest in the sense that in this special situatio…
We prove an extension of a theorem of A.Ros on a characterization of seven compact Kaehler submanifolds by holomorphic pinching to certain submanifolds of the complex Grassmannian manifolds.
We show that, in toric manifolds, one can characterize the sign of the Ricci curvature in terms of the convexity of the volume functional. More generally we discuss relationships between (i) Ricci curvature and volume, (ii) totally real and Lagrangian submanifolds, (iii) pluri-subharmonic functions and convexity.
In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,J…
In this paper, we introduce the stress-energy tensors of the partial energies E'(f) and E"(f) of maps between Kaehler manifolds. Assuming the domain manifolds poss some special exhaustion functions, we use these stress-energy tensors to establish some monotonicity formulae of the partial energies of pluriharmonic maps into any Kaehler manifolds and harmonic maps into Kaehler manifolds with strongly semi-negative curvature respectively. These monotonicity inequalities enable us to derive some holomorphicity and Liouville type results for these pluriharmonic maps and harmonic maps. We also use t…
In this article, we construct a new para-Kähler structure $({\mathcal G},{\mathcal J},Ω)$ in the space of oriented geodesics ${\mathbb L}(M)$ in a non-flat, real space form $M$. We first show that the para-Kähler metric ${\mathcal G}$ is scalar flat and when $M$ is a 3-dimensional real space form, ${\mathcal G}$ is locally conformally flat. Furthermore, we prove that the space of oriented geodesics in hyperbolic $n$-space, equipped with the constructed metric ${\mathcal G}$, is minimally isometric embedded in the tangent bundle of the hyperbolic $n$-space. We then study the submanifold theory,…
Our main results are: (1) The complex a Lagrangian points of a non-complex Lagrangian $2n$-dimensional submanifold $F:M\ra N$, immersed with parallel mean curvature and with equal Kaehler angles into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold $(N,J,g)$ of complex dimension $2n$, are zeros of finite order of $\sin^2θ$ and $\cos^2θ$ respectively, where $θ$ is the common $J$-Kaelher angle. (2) If $M$ is a Cayley submanifold of a Calabi-Yau (CY) manifold $N$ of complex dimension 4, then $\bigwedge^2_+NM$ is naturally isomorphic to $\bigwedge^2_+TM$. (3) If $N$ is Ricci-flat (not necessarily CY) and $M$ is a Cayl…
In this paper, we initiate the study of $\p R$-warped products in para-Kähler manifolds and prove some fundamental results on such submanifolds. In particular, we establish a general optimal inequality for $\p R$-warped products in para-Kähler manifolds involving only the warping function and the second fundamental form. Moreover, we completely classify $\p R$-warped products in the flat para-Kähler manifold with least codimension which satisfy the equality case of the inequality.
In this article, we study minimal isometric immersions of Kähler manifolds into product of two real space forms. We analyse the obstruction conditions to the existence of pluriharmonic isometric immersions of a Kähler manifold into those spaces and we prove that the only ones into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{m-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ are the minimal isometric immersions of Riemannian surfaces. Futhermore, we show that the existence of a minimal isometric immersion of a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{m-k}\times \mathbb{H}^k…
We present Chen-Ricci inequality and improved Chen-Ricci inequality for curvature like tensors. Applying our improved Chen-Ricci inequality we study Lagrangian and Kaehlerian slant submanifolds of complex space forms and C-totally real submanifolds of Sasakian space forms.
This article sets out to serve a dual purpose. On the one hand, we give an explicit description of the Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kaehler 6-sphere which are ruled by circles of constant radius using Weierstrass formulae. On the other, we recognise all previous known examples of these Lagrangians as being ruled by such circles. Therefore, we describe all families of Lagrangians in the 6-sphere whose second fundamental form satisfies natural pointwise conditions: so-called second order families.
We show that, in toric Kaehler geometry, the sign of the Ricci curvature corresponds exactly to convexity properties of the volume functional. We also discuss analogous relationships in the more general context of quasi-homogeneous manifolds, and existence results for minimal Lagrangian submanifolds.
In this article we study complex properties of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kaehler ambient spaces, and how they depend on the ambient curvature. In particular, we prove that, in the negative curvature case, minimal Lagrangians do not admit fillings by holomorphic discs. The proof relies on a mix of holomorphic curve techniques and on certain convexity results.
A quaternionic Kähler manifold M is called {\it positive} if it has positive scalar curvature. The main purpose of this paper is to prove several connectedness theorems for quaternionic immersions in a quaternionic Kähler manifold, e.g. the Barth-Lefschetz type connectedness theorem for quaternionic submanifolds in a positive quaternionic Kähler manifold. As applications we prove that, among others, a 4m-dimensional positive quaternionic Kähler manifold with symmetry rank at least (m-2) must be either isometric to \Bbb HP^m or Gr_2(\Bbb C^{m+2}), if m\ge 10.
We characterize isometric actions on compact Kaehler manifolds admitting a Lagrangian orbit, describing under which condition the Lagrangian orbit is unique. We furthermore give the complete classification of simple groups acting on the complex projective space with a Lagrangian orbit, and we give the explicit list of these orbits.
A classical result of D. McDuff asserts that a simply-connected complete Kaehler manifold $(M,g,ω)$ with non positive sectional curvature admits global symplectic coordinates through a symplectomorphism $Ψ: M\rightarrow R^{2n}$ (where $n$ is the complex dimension of $M$), satisfying the following property (proved by E. Ciriza): the image $Ψ(T)$ of any complex totally geodesic submanifold $T\subset M$ through the point $p$ such that $Ψ(p)=0$, is a complex linear subspace of $C^n \simeq R^{2n}$. The aim of this paper is to exhibit, for all positive integers $n$, examples of $n$-dimensional compl…
An introduction is provided to some current research trends in stability in geometric invariant theory and the problem of Kaehler metrics of constant scalar curvature. Besides classical notions such as Chow-Mumford stability, the emphasis is on several new stability conditions, such as K-stability, Donaldson's infinite-dimensional GIT, and conditions on the closure of orbits of almost-complex structures under the diffeomorphism group. Related analytic methods are also discussed, including estimates for energy functionals, Tian-Yau-Zelditch approximations, estimates for moment maps, complex Mon…
Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kaehler manifold are called Hamiltonian-stationary (or $H$-stationary for short) if it is a critical point of the area functional restricted to compactly supported Hamiltonian variations. In [B. Y. Chen, F. Dillen, L. Verstraelen and L. Vrancken, Lagrangian isometric immersions of a real-space-form $M^{n}(c)$ into a complex-space-form $\tilde{M}^{n}(4c)$, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philo. Soc. 124 (1998), 107-125], an effective method to constructing Lagrangian submanifolds of constant curvature $\varepsilon$ in complex space form $M^n(4\varepsilon)$ was introduced. In …
