v1: Plain LaTeX, 60 pages. v2, 48 pages: This is a quite modified version of the first one. The residue formula in the first version was not complete, for we used a degenerated metric. We complete it now, using a different path, and some formulas in math.DG/0412389. We explicit the residue in a particular case and correct some minor errors. We dedicate this hard computation to Jim Eells
Our main results are: (1) The complex a Lagrangian points of a non-complex Lagrangian $2n$-dimensional submanifold $F:M\ra N$, immersed with parallel mean curvature and with equal Kaehler angles into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold $(N,J,g)$ of complex dimension $2n$, are zeros of finite order of $\sin^2θ$ and $\cos^2θ$ respectively, where $θ$ is the common $J$-Kaelher angle. (2) If $M$ is a Cayley submanifold of a Calabi-Yau (CY) manifold $N$ of complex dimension 4, then $\bigwedge^2_+NM$ is naturally isomorphic to $\bigwedge^2_+TM$. (3) If $N$ is Ricci-flat (not necessarily CY) and $M$ is a Cayley submanifold, then $ p_1(\bigwedge^2_+NM)= p_1(\bigwedge^2_+TM)$ still holds, but $p_1(\bigwedge^2_-NM)- p_1(\bigwedge^2_-TM)$ may describe a residue on the $J$-complex points, in the sense of Harvey and Lawson. We describe this residue by a PDE on a natural morphism $Φ:TM \to NM$, $Φ(X)=(JX)^{\bot}$, with singularities at the complex points. We give an explicit formula of this residue in a particular case. When $(N,I,J,K,g)$ is an hyper-Kaehler manifold and $M$ is an $I$-complex closed 4-submanifold, the first Weyl curvature invariant of $M$ may be described as a residue on the $J$-Kaehler angle at the $J$_Lagrangian points by a Lelong-Poincaré type formula. We study the almost complex structure $\Jw$ on $M$ induced by $F$.
Given a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension 4, we consider submanifolds of (real) dimension 4, whose Kaehler angles coincide. We call these submanifolds Cayley. We investigate some of their basic properties, and prove that (a) if the ambient manifold is a Calabi-Yau, the minimal Cayley submanifolds are just the Cayley submanifolds as defined by Harvey and Lawson; (b) if the ambient is a Kaehler-Einstein manifold of non-zero scalar curvature, then minimal Cayley submanifolds have to be either complex or Lagrangian.
In this article we study the deformation theory of conically singular Cayley submanifolds. In particular, we prove a result on the expected dimension of a moduli space of Cayley deformations of a conically singular Cayley submanifold. Moreover, when the Cayley submanifold is a two-dimensional complex submanifold of a Calabi--Yau four-fold we show by comparing Cayley and complex deformations that in this special case the moduli space is a smooth manifold. We also perform calculations of some of the quantities discussed for some examples.
Let M be an 8-manifold with a Spin(7)-structure. We first show that closed Cayley submanifolds of M form a smooth moduli space for a generic Spin(7)-structure. Then we study the deformations of a compact, connected Cayley submanifold X of M with non-empty boundary contained in a given submanifold W of M such that X and W meet orthogonally. We show that they are rigid for a generic Spin(7)-structure. We further show that they are also rigid for a generic deformation of W.
We prove an existence theorem for Spin(7)-instantons, which are highly concentrated near a Cayley submanifold; thus giving a partial converse to Tian's foundational compactness theorem. As an application, we show how to construct Spin(7)-instantons on Spin(7)-manifolds with suitable local K3 Cayley fibrations. This recovers an example constructed by Lewis.
We study the deformations of an asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifold inside an asymptotically cylindrical Spin(7)-manifold. We prove an index formula for the operator of Dirac type that arises as the linearisation of the deformation map and show that if the Spin(7)-structure is generic, then there are no obstructions, and hence the moduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold whose dimension is equal to the index of the operator of Dirac type. We further construct examples of asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifolds inside the asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 8-mani…
We classify totally geodesic submanifolds of Damek-Ricci spaces and show that they are either homogeneous (such submanifolds are known to be "smaller" Damek-Ricci spaces) or isometric to rank-one symmetric spaces of negative curvature. As a by-product, we obtain that a totally geodesic submanifold of any known harmonic manifold is by itself harmonic. We prove that the Cayley hyperbolic plane admits no Einstein hypersurfaces and that the only Einstein hypersurfaces in the Cayley projective plane are geodesic spheres of a particular radius; this completes the classification of Einstein hypersurf…
In this paper, the relationship between the existence of special lagrangian submanifolds and the collapsing of Calabi-Yau manifolds is studied. First, special lagrangian fibrations are constructed on some regions of bounded curvature and sufficiently collapsed in Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds. Then, in the opposite direction,it is shown that the existence of special lagrangian submanifolds with small volume implies the collapsing of some regions in the ambient Calabi-Yau manifolds.
In this paper we generalize examples of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds constructed by Lee and Wang in $\mathbb{C}^m$ to toric almost Calabi-Yau manifolds. We construct examples of weighted Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds in toric almost Calabi-Yau manifolds and solutions of generalized Lagrangian mean curvature flows starting from these examples. We allow these flows to have some singularities and topological changes.
We consider a generalization of Calabi-Yau structures in the context of $α$-Sasakian manifolds. We study deformations of a special class of Legendrian submanifolds and classify invariant contact Calabi-Yau structures on 5-dimensional nilmanifolds. Finally we generalize to codimension $r$.
In this article, we consider Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface in a Calabi--Yau four-fold. We will study complex deformations of compact complex submanifolds of Calabi--Yau manifolds with a view to explaining why complex and Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface are the same. We in fact prove that the moduli space of complex deformations of any compact complex embedded submanifold of a Calabi--Yau manifold is a smooth manifold.
A nearly parallel $G_{2}$-manifold $Y$ is a Riemannian 7-manifold whose cone $C(Y) = \mathbb{R}_{>0} \times Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$. In other words, it is a spin 7-manifold with a real Killing spinor. We have a special class of calibrated submanifolds called Cayley submanifolds in $C(Y)$. An associative submanifold in $Y$ is a minimal 3-submanifold whose cone is Cayley. We study its deformations, namely, Cayley cone deformations, explicitly when it is homogeneous in the 7-sphere $S^{7}$.
It is known that there exist Calabi-Yau structures on the complexifications of symmetric spaces of compact type. In this paper, we describe the Calabi-Yau structures of the complexified symmetric spaces in terms of the Schwarz's theorem in detail. We consider the case where the Calabi-Yau structure arises from the Riemannian metric corresponding to the Stenzel metric. In the complexified symmetric spaces equipped with such a Calabi-Yau structure, we give constructions of special Lagrangian submanifolds of any phase which are invariant under the actions of symmetric subgroups of the isometry gr…
The principal theory of this paper comprises a technique for constructing associative, coassociative and Cayley submanifolds of Euclidean space with symmetries, using first-order ordinary differential equations. Explicit examples of U(1)-invariant associative cones in R^7 and SU(2)-invariant Cayley 4-folds in R^8 are then produced using this method. Further examples of associative 3-folds are presented, which are ruled, and other systems of differential equations defining calibrated submanifolds in R^7 and R^8 are given.
Our purpose is to show the existence of a Calabi-Yau structure on the punctured cotangent bundle $T^{*}_{0}(P^2\mathbb{O})$ of the Cayley projective plane $P^{2}\mathbb{O}$ and to construct a Bargmann type transformation from a space of holomorphic functions on $T^{*}_{0}(P^2\mathbb{O})$ to $L_{2}$-space on $P^{2}\mathbb{O}$. The space of holomorphic functions corresponds to the Fock space in the case of the original Bargmann transformation. A Kähler structure on $T^{*}_{0}(P^{2}\mathbb{O})$ was shown by identifying it with a quadrics in the complex space $\mathbb{C}^{27}\backslash\{0\}$ and t…
We prove that certain Riemannian manifolds can be isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds. For example we prove that given any real-analytic one parameter family of Riemannian metrics $g_t$ on a 3-dimensional manifold $Y$ with volume form independent of $t$ and with a real-analytic family of nowhere vanishing harmonic one forms $θ_t$, then $(Y, g_t)$ can be realized as a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$. We also prove that certain principal torus bundles can be equivariantly and isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds with torus actio…
We show a method to construct a special Lagrangian submanifold L' from a given special Lagrangian submanifold L in a Calabi-Yau manifold with the use of generalized perpendicular symmetries. We use moment maps of the actions of Lie groups, which are not necessarily abelian. By our method, we construct some non-trivial examples in the cotangent bundles of the spheres which are non-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with the Stenzel metrics.
Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be special Lagrangian submanifolds of a compact Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ that intersect transversely at a single point. We can then think of $M_1\cup M_2$ as a singular special Lagrangian submanifold of $X$ with a single isolated singularity. We investigate when we can regularize $M_1\cup M_2$ in the following sense: There exists a family of Calabi-Yau structures $X_α$ on $X$ and a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds $M_α$ of $X_α$ such that $M_α$ converges to $M_1\cup M_2$ and $X_α$ converges to the original Calabi-Yau structure on $X$. We prove that a regularization …
In this paper, we study the rigidity theorem of closed minimally immersed Legendrian submanifolds in the unit sphere. Utilizing the maximum principle, we obtain a new characterization of the Calabi torus in the unit sphere which is the minimal Calabi product Legendrian immersion of a point and the totally geodesic Legendrian sphere. We also establish an optimal Simons' type integral inequality in terms of the second fundamental form of three dimensional closed minimal Legendrian submanifolds in the unit sphere.
We derive formulas for the mean curvature of associative 3-folds, coassociative 4-folds, and Cayley 4-folds in the general case where the ambient space has intrinsic torsion. Consequently, we are able to characterize those G2-structures (resp., Spin(7)-structures) for which every associative 3-fold (resp. coassociative 4-fold, Cayley 4-fold) is a minimal submanifold. In the process, we obtain new obstructions to the local existence of coassociative 4-folds in G2-structures with torsion.
Starting with an orientable compact real-analytic Riemannian manifold $(L,g)$ with $χ(L)=0$, we show that a small neighbourhood $ \textrm{Op}(L) $ of the zero section in the cotangent bundle $T^{*}L$ carries a Calabi-Yau structure such that the zero section is an isometrically embedded special Lagrangian submanifold.
We study curvature-adapted submanifolds of general symmetric spaces. We generalize Cartan's theorem for isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres and Wang's classification of isoparametric Hopf hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces to any compact symmetric space. Our second objective is to investigate such hypersurfaces in some specific symmetric spaces. Various classification results in the Cayley projective and hyperbolic planes and in complex two-plane Grassmannians are obtained under some additional assumptions.
R.C.McLean showed that the moduli space of nearby submanifolds of a smooth, compact, orientable special Lagrangian submanifold L in a Calabi-Yau manifold X is a smooth manifold and its tangent space at L is identified with the space of harmonic one forms on L. In this paper, we will extend this result from Calabi-Yau manifolds to the symplectic manifolds with non-integrable almost complex structure.
We introduce special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m and in (almost) Calabi-Yau manifolds, and survey recent results on singularities of special Lagrangian submanifolds, and their application to the SYZ Conjecture. The paper is aimed at graduate students in Geometry, String Theorists, and others wishing to learn the subject. Special Lagrangian m-folds in C^m are defined, and ways of constructing them described. 'Almost Calabi-Yau manifolds' (a generalization of Calabi-Yau manifolds useful in special Lagrangian geometry) are introduced, and the deformation theory, obstruction theory, and moduli …
We construct examples of cohomogeneity one special Lagrangian submanifolds in the cotangent bundle over the complex projective space, whose Calabi-Yau structure was given by Stenzel. For each example, we describe the condition of special Lagrangian as an ordinary differential equation. Our method is based on a moment map technique and the classification of cohomogeneity one actions on the complex projective space classified by Takagi.
This is a survey of our work on spacelike graphic submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian products, namely on Heinz-Chern and Bernstein-Calabi results and on the mean curvature flow, with applications to the homotopy of maps between Riemannian manifolds.
We study the existence of special Lagrangian submanifolds of log Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with the complete Ricci-flat Kähler metric constructed by Tian-Yau. We prove that if $X$ is a Tian-Yau manifold, and if the compact Calabi-Yau manifold at infinty admits a single special Lagrangian, then $X$ admits infinitely many disjoint special Lagrangians. In complex dimension $2$, we prove that if $Y$ is a del Pezzo surface, or a rational elliptic surface, and $D\in |-K_{Y}|$ is a smooth divisor with $D^2=d$, then $X= Y\backslash D$ admits a special Lagrangian torus fibration, as conjectured by …
In this paper we study the geometry of manifolds with vector cross product and its complexification. First we develop the theory of instantons and branes and study their deformations. For example they are (i) holomorphic curves and Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds and (ii) associative submanifolds and coassociative submanifolds in G_2-manifolds. Second we classify Kahler manifolds with the complex analog of vector cross product, namely they are Calabi-Yau manifolds and hyperkahler manifolds. Furthermore we study instantons, Neumann branes and Dirichlet branes on these manifolds.…
n this paper we define an invariant of a pair of 6 dimensional symplectic %optional manifold with vanishing 1st Chern class and its Lagrangian submanifold with vanishing Maslov index. This invariant is a function on the set of the path connected components of the bounding cochains (solution of A infinity version of Maurer-Cartan equation of the filtered A infinity algebra associated to the Lagrangian submanifold). In the case when the Lagrangian submanifold is a rational homology sphere, it becomes a numerical invariant. This invariant depends on the choice of almost complex structure. The way…
Generalizing the construction of the Maslov class for a Lagrangian embedding in a symplectic vector space, we prove that it is possible to give a consistent definition of this class for any Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau manifold. Moreover, we prove that this class can be represented by the contraction of the Kaehler form associated to the Calabi-Yau metric, with the mean curvature vector field of the Lagrangian embedding. Finally, we suggest a possible generalization of the Maslov class for Lagrangian submanifolds of any symplectic manifold, via the mean curvature representation.
This paper is a follow-up to an earlier paper math.DG/0410260 on desingularizations of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a conical singularity. In math.DG/0410260 we study Calabi-Yau 3-folds M_0 with a conical singularity at x modelled on some Calabi-Yau cone V, and construct a desingularization of M_0 by gluing in an Asymptotically Conical (AC) Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y to M_0 at x. In this paper, we shall investigate a similar desingularization problem on special Lagrangian (SL) 3-folds in the corresponding Calabi-Yau 3-folds. More precisely, suppose M_0 is now a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with finitely many conical…
We survey what is known about singularities of special Lagrangian submanifolds (SL m-folds) in (almost) Calabi-Yau manifolds. The bulk of the paper summarizes the author's five papers math.DG/0211294, math.DG/0211295, math.DG/0302355, math.DG/0302356, math.DG/0303272 on SL m-folds X with isolated conical singularities. That is, near each singular point x, X is modelled on an SL cone C in C^m with isolated singularity at 0. We also discuss directions for future research, and give a list of open problems.
We give a simple proof of the local version of a result of R. Bryant, stating that any 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be isometrically embedded as a special Lagrangian submanifold in a Calabi-Yau manifold. We refine the theorem proving that a certain class of one-parameter families of metrics on a 3-torus can be isometrically embedded in a Calabi-Yau manifold as a one-parameter family of special Lagrangian submanifolds. We use our examples of one-parameter families to show that the semi-flat metric on the mirror manifold proposed be N. Hitchin is not necessarily Ricci-flat in dimension …
We construct a family of Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex sphere with a SO(n)-invariance property. Among them we find those which are special Lagrangian with respect with the Calabi-Yau structure defined by the Stenzel metric.
The purpose of this paper is to prove a gluing theorem for a given special Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The proof will be an adaption of the gluing techniques in J-holomorphic curve theory. It is a well known procedure in geometric analysis to construct new solutions to a given nonlinear partial differential equation by gluing known solutions. First an approximate solution is constructed and then using analytic methods it is perturbed to a real solution. In this paper the gluing theorem will be used for smoothing a singularity of a special Lagrangian submanifold. In particula…
The self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows have been defined and studied on the Euclidean space. In this paper we initiate a general treatment of the self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows on Riemannian cone manifolds. As a typical result we extend the well-known result of Huisken about the asymptotic behavior for the singularities of the mean curvature flows. We also extend the results on special Lagrangian submanifolds on $\mathbb C^n$ to the toric Calabi-Yau cones over Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.
We construct some examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds and Lagrangian self-similar solutions in almost Calabi-Yau cones over toric Sasaki manifolds. For example, for any integer g>0, we can construct a real 6 dimensional Calabi-Yau cone M_g and a 3 dimensional special Lagrangian submanifold L^1_g in M_g which is diffeomorphic to the product of a closed surface of genus g and the real line R, and a 3 dimensional compact Lagrangian self-shrinker L^2_g in M_g which is diffeomorphic to the product of the closed surface of genus g and a circle S^1.
We introduce a homology theory whose Euler characteristics counts ASD bundles over four dimensional co-associative submanifolds in (almost) G_2 manifolds. As a TQFT, in relative situations, we have the Fukaya-Floer category of Lagrangians intersection in the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in CY threefolds.
We show the total space of the canonical line bundle $\mathbb{L}$ of a Kahler-Einstein manifold $X^n$ supports integrable $SU(n+1)$ structures, or Calabi-Yau structures. The canonical real line bundle $L \subset \mathbb{L}$ over a minimal Lagrangian submanifold $M \subset X$ is calibrated in this setting and hence can be considered as the special Lagrangian lift of $M$. For the integrable $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ structures on spin bundles and bundles of anti-self-dual 2-forms on self-dual Einstein 4-manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, minimal surfaces with vanishing complex quartic form (…
In an earlier paper, we proved that, under certain hypotheses, the moduli space of an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold with fixed boundary of an asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-fold is a smooth manifold. Here we prove the analogous result for an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold with moving boundary.
In this paper we study the short time existence problem for the (generalized) Lagrangian mean curvature flow in (almost) Calabi--Yau manifolds when the initial Lagrangian submanifold has isolated conical singularities modelled on stable special Lagrangian cones. Given a Lagrangian submanifold $F_0:L\rightarrow M$ in an almost Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ with isolated conical singularities at $x_1,...,x_n\in M$ modelled on stable special Lagrangian cones $C_1,...,C_n$ in $\mathbb{C}^m$, we show that for a short time there exist one-parameter families of points $x_1(t),... x_n(t)\in M$ and a one pa…
In this article we study the tangent cones at first time singularity of a Lagrangian mean curvature flow. If the initial compact submanifold is Lagrangian and almost calibrated by ReΩin a Calabi-Yau n-fold (M,Ω), and T>0 is the first blow-up time of the mean curvature flow, then the tangent cone of the mean curvature flow at a singular point (X,T) is a stationary Lagrangian integer multiplicity current in R\sup 2n with volume density greater than one at X. When n=2, the tangent cone consists of a finite union of more than one 2-planes in R\sup 4 which are complex in a complex structure on R\su…
We define the quantum correction of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ Φ(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $Φ$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperkähler m…
H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in general Kähler manifolds generalize special Lagrangian submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we will use the deformation theory of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kähler manifolds to construct minimal Lagrangian torus in certain Kähler-Einstein manifolds with negative first Chern class.
This paper gives a leisurely introduction to Calabi-Yau manifolds and special Lagrangian submanifolds from the differential geometric point of view, followed by a survey of recent results on singularities of special Lagrangian submanifolds, and their application to the SYZ Conjecture. It is aimed at graduate students in Geometry, String Theorists, and others wishing to learn the subject, and is designed to be fairly self-contained. It is based on lecture courses given at Nordfjordeid, Norway and MSRI, Berkeley in June and July 2001. We introduce Calabi-Yau m-folds via holonomy groups, Kahler g…
Special Lagrangian submanifolds are submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau manifold calibrated by the real part of the holomorphic volume form. In this paper we use elliptic theory for edge-degenerate differential operators on singular manifolds to study the moduli space of deformations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with edge singularities. We obtain a general theorem describing the local structure of the moduli space. When the obstruction space vanishes the moduli space is a smooth, finite dimensional manifold.
Let $\OO$ be an orbit of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms acting on the space of Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold $(X,ω).$ We define a functional $\CC:\OO \to \R$ for each differential form $β$ of middle degree satisfying $β\wedge ω= 0$ and an exactness condition. If the exactness condition does not hold, $\CC$ is defined on the universal cover of $\OO.$ A particular instance of $\CC$ recovers the Calabi homomorphism. If $β$ is the imaginary part of a holomorphic volume form, the critical points of $\CC$ are special Lagrangian submanifolds. We present evidence that $…
We study gluings of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds in asymptotically cylindrical Calabi--Yau manifolds. We prove both that there is a well-defined gluing map, and, after reviewing the deformation theory for special Lagrangians, prove that this gluing map defines a local diffeomorphism from matching pairs of deformations of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangians to deformations of special Lagrangians. We also give some examples of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds to which these results apply.
Given an asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifold L in an asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-fold X, we determine conditions on a decay rate gamma which make the moduli space of (local) special Lagrangian deformations of L in X a smooth manifold and show that it has dimension equal to the dimension of the image of H^1_{cs}(L,R) in H^1(L,R) under the natural inclusion map.
Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds (HSLAG) are a natural generalization of special Lagrangian manifolds (SLAG). The latter only make sense on Calabi-Yau manifolds whereas the former are defined for any almost Kähler manifold. Special Lagrangians, and, more specificaly, fibrations by special Lagrangians play an important role in the context of the geometric mirror symmetry conjecture. However, these objects are rather scarce in nature. On the contrary, we show that HSLAG submanifolds, or fibrations, arise quite often. Many examples of HSLAG fibrations are provided by toric Käh-ler g…
We generalize Calabi-Yau 3-folds from the special Lagrangian perspective. More precisely, we study SU(3)-structures which admit as "nice" a local special Lagrangian geometry as the flat $\mathbf{C}^3$ or a Calabi-Yau structure does. The underlying almost complex structure may not be integrable. Such SU(3)-structures are called {\it admissible}. Among these, we are particularly interested in a subclass of SU(3)-structures called {\it nearly Calabi-Yau}. We discuss the local generalities of admissible SU(3)-structures and nearly Calabi-Yau structures in Cartan's sense. Examples of nearly Calabi-…
