Given a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension 4, we consider submanifolds of (real) dimension 4, whose Kaehler angles coincide. We call these submanifolds Cayley. We investigate some of their basic properties, and prove that (a) if the ambient manifold is a Calabi-Yau, the minimal Cayley submanifolds are just the Cayley submanifolds as defined by Harvey and Lawson; (b) if the ambient is a Kaehler-Einstein manifold of non-zero scalar curvature, then minimal Cayley submanifolds have to be either complex or Lagrangian.
In this article we study the deformation theory of conically singular Cayley submanifolds. In particular, we prove a result on the expected dimension of a moduli space of Cayley deformations of a conically singular Cayley submanifold. Moreover, when the Cayley submanifold is a two-dimensional complex submanifold of a Calabi--Yau four-fold we show by comparing Cayley and complex deformations that in this special case the moduli space is a smooth manifold. We also perform calculations of some of the quantities discussed for some examples.
Let M be an 8-manifold with a Spin(7)-structure. We first show that closed Cayley submanifolds of M form a smooth moduli space for a generic Spin(7)-structure. Then we study the deformations of a compact, connected Cayley submanifold X of M with non-empty boundary contained in a given submanifold W of M such that X and W meet orthogonally. We show that they are rigid for a generic Spin(7)-structure. We further show that they are also rigid for a generic deformation of W.
We prove an existence theorem for Spin(7)-instantons, which are highly concentrated near a Cayley submanifold; thus giving a partial converse to Tian's foundational compactness theorem. As an application, we show how to construct Spin(7)-instantons on Spin(7)-manifolds with suitable local K3 Cayley fibrations. This recovers an example constructed by Lewis.
We study the deformations of an asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifold inside an asymptotically cylindrical Spin(7)-manifold. We prove an index formula for the operator of Dirac type that arises as the linearisation of the deformation map and show that if the Spin(7)-structure is generic, then there are no obstructions, and hence the moduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold whose dimension is equal to the index of the operator of Dirac type. We further construct examples of asymptotically cylindrical Cayley submanifolds inside the asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian 8-mani…
We classify totally geodesic submanifolds of Damek-Ricci spaces and show that they are either homogeneous (such submanifolds are known to be "smaller" Damek-Ricci spaces) or isometric to rank-one symmetric spaces of negative curvature. As a by-product, we obtain that a totally geodesic submanifold of any known harmonic manifold is by itself harmonic. We prove that the Cayley hyperbolic plane admits no Einstein hypersurfaces and that the only Einstein hypersurfaces in the Cayley projective plane are geodesic spheres of a particular radius; this completes the classification of Einstein hypersurf…
A nearly parallel $G_{2}$-manifold $Y$ is a Riemannian 7-manifold whose cone $C(Y) = \mathbb{R}_{>0} \times Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$. In other words, it is a spin 7-manifold with a real Killing spinor. We have a special class of calibrated submanifolds called Cayley submanifolds in $C(Y)$. An associative submanifold in $Y$ is a minimal 3-submanifold whose cone is Cayley. We study its deformations, namely, Cayley cone deformations, explicitly when it is homogeneous in the 7-sphere $S^{7}$.
In this article, we consider Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface in a Calabi--Yau four-fold. We will study complex deformations of compact complex submanifolds of Calabi--Yau manifolds with a view to explaining why complex and Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface are the same. We in fact prove that the moduli space of complex deformations of any compact complex embedded submanifold of a Calabi--Yau manifold is a smooth manifold.
Our main results are: (1) The complex a Lagrangian points of a non-complex Lagrangian $2n$-dimensional submanifold $F:M\ra N$, immersed with parallel mean curvature and with equal Kaehler angles into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold $(N,J,g)$ of complex dimension $2n$, are zeros of finite order of $\sin^2θ$ and $\cos^2θ$ respectively, where $θ$ is the common $J$-Kaelher angle. (2) If $M$ is a Cayley submanifold of a Calabi-Yau (CY) manifold $N$ of complex dimension 4, then $\bigwedge^2_+NM$ is naturally isomorphic to $\bigwedge^2_+TM$. (3) If $N$ is Ricci-flat (not necessarily CY) and $M$ is a Cayl…
The principal theory of this paper comprises a technique for constructing associative, coassociative and Cayley submanifolds of Euclidean space with symmetries, using first-order ordinary differential equations. Explicit examples of U(1)-invariant associative cones in R^7 and SU(2)-invariant Cayley 4-folds in R^8 are then produced using this method. Further examples of associative 3-folds are presented, which are ruled, and other systems of differential equations defining calibrated submanifolds in R^7 and R^8 are given.
We derive formulas for the mean curvature of associative 3-folds, coassociative 4-folds, and Cayley 4-folds in the general case where the ambient space has intrinsic torsion. Consequently, we are able to characterize those G2-structures (resp., Spin(7)-structures) for which every associative 3-fold (resp. coassociative 4-fold, Cayley 4-fold) is a minimal submanifold. In the process, we obtain new obstructions to the local existence of coassociative 4-folds in G2-structures with torsion.
Given a parallel calibration $ϕ\in Ω^p(M)$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$, I prove that the $ϕ$--critical submanifolds with nonzero critical value are minimal submanifolds. I also show that the $ϕ$--critical submanifolds are precisely the integral manifolds of a $\mathscr{C}^\infty(M)$--linear subspace $\sP \subset Ω^p(M)$. In particular, the calibrated submanifolds are necessarily integral submanifolds of the system. (Examples of parallel calibrations include the special Lagrangian calibration on Calabi-Yau manifolds, (co)associative calibrations on $G_2$--manifolds, and the Cayley calibration …
Using the Cartan-Kahler theory, and results on real algebraic structures, we prove two embedding theorems. First, the interior of a smooth, compact 3-manifold may be isometrically embedded into a G_2-manifold as an associative submanifold. Second, the interior of a smooth, compact 4-manifold K, whose double has a trivial bundle of self-dual 2-forms, may be isometrically embedded into a Spin(7)-manifold as a Cayley submanifold. Along the way, we also show that Bochner's Theorem on real analytic approximation of smooth differential forms, can be obtained using real algebraic tools developed by A…
We study curvature-adapted submanifolds of general symmetric spaces. We generalize Cartan's theorem for isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres and Wang's classification of isoparametric Hopf hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces to any compact symmetric space. Our second objective is to investigate such hypersurfaces in some specific symmetric spaces. Various classification results in the Cayley projective and hyperbolic planes and in complex two-plane Grassmannians are obtained under some additional assumptions.
Associative submanifolds $A$ in nearly parallel $G_2$-manifolds $Y$ are minimal 3-submanifolds in spin 7-manifolds with a real Killing spinor. The Riemannian cone over $Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$ and the Riemannian cone over $A$ is a Cayley submanifold. Infinitesimal deformations of associative submanifolds were considered by the author. This paper is a continuation of the work. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an infinitesimal associative deformation to be integrable (unobstructed) to second order explicitly. As an application, we show that the infi…
We show the total space of the canonical line bundle $\mathbb{L}$ of a Kahler-Einstein manifold $X^n$ supports integrable $SU(n+1)$ structures, or Calabi-Yau structures. The canonical real line bundle $L \subset \mathbb{L}$ over a minimal Lagrangian submanifold $M \subset X$ is calibrated in this setting and hence can be considered as the special Lagrangian lift of $M$. For the integrable $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ structures on spin bundles and bundles of anti-self-dual 2-forms on self-dual Einstein 4-manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, minimal surfaces with vanishing complex quartic form (…
Local SU(3)-structures on an oriented submanifold of Spin(7)-manifold are determined and their types are characterized in terms of the shape operator and the type of the Spin(7)-structure. An application to Bryant \cite{MR89b:53084} and Calabi \cite{MR24 #A558} examples is given. It is shown that the product of a Cayley plane and a minimal surface lying in a four-dimensional orthogonal Cayley plane with the induced complex structure from the octonions described by Bryant in \cite{MR89b:53084} admits a holomorphic local complex volume form exactly when it lies in a three-plane, i.e. it coincide…
We introduce a generalization of structured manifolds as the most general Riemannian metric g associated to an affinor (tensor field of (1,1)-type) F and initiate a study of their semi-invariant submanifolds. These submanifolds are generalization of CR-submanifolds of almost complex geometry and semi-invariant submanifolds of several interesting geometries (almost product, almost contact and others). We characterize the integrability of both invariant and anti-invariant distribution; the special case when F is covariant constant with respect to g gives major simplifications in computations.
The aim of this paper is to study variational properties for $f$-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kähler manifolds with real holomorphy potentials. Examples of submanifolds of this kind incuding soliton solutions for Lagrangian mean curvature flow (LMCF). We derive second variation formula for $f$-minimal Lagrangians as a generalization of Chen and Oh's formula for minimal Lagrangians. As a corollary, we obtain stability of expanding and translating solitons for LMCF. We also define calibrated submanifolds with respect to $f$-volume in gradient steady Kähler--Ricci solitons as generalization…
This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bun…
Associative submanifolds of the 7-sphere S^7 are 3-dimensional minimal submanifolds which are the links of calibrated 4-dimensional cones in R^8 called Cayley cones. Examples of associative 3-folds are thus given by the links of complex and special Lagrangian cones in C^4, as well as Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler 6-sphere. By classifying the associative group orbits, we exhibit the first known explicit example of an associative 3-fold in S^7 which does not arise from other geometries. We then study associative 3-folds satisfying the curvature constraint known as Chen's equality,…
Our goal is to generalize the Choe-Hoppe helicoid and Clifford cones in Euclidean space. By sweeping out $L$ indpendent Clifford cones in ${\mathbb{R}}^{2N+2}$ via the multi-screw motion, we construct minimal submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)+1}$. Also, we sweep out the $L$-rays Clifford cone (introduced in Section 2.3) in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)}$ to construct minimal submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)+1}$. Our minimal submanifolds unify various interesting examples: Choe-Hoppe's helicoid of codimension one, cone over Lawson's ruled minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb{S}}^{3}$, Barbosa-Dajc…
In this paper, we first introduce the concept of $ξ$-submanifold which is a natural generalization of self-shrinkers for the mean curvature flow and also an extension of $λ$-hypersurfaces to the higher codimension. Then, as the main result, we prove a rigidity theorem for Lagrangian $ξ$-submanifold in the complex $2$-plane $\bbc^2$.
We consider a generalization of Calabi-Yau structures in the context of $α$-Sasakian manifolds. We study deformations of a special class of Legendrian submanifolds and classify invariant contact Calabi-Yau structures on 5-dimensional nilmanifolds. Finally we generalize to codimension $r$.
We derive total mean curvature integration formulae of a three co-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{F}^{n}$ on a screen integrable half-lightlike submanifold, $M^{n+1}$ in a semi-Riemannian manifold $\overline{M}^{n+3}$. We give generalized differential equations relating to mean curvatures of a totally umbilical half-lightlike submanifold admitting a totally umbilical screen distribution, and show that they are generalizations of those given by [4].
We prove a generalization of Thom's transversality theorem. It gives conditions under which the jet map $f_*|_Y:Y\subseteq J^r(D,M)\ra J^r(D,N)$ is generically (for $f:M\ra N$) transverse to a submanifold $Z\subseteq J^r(D,N)$. We apply this to study transversality properties of a restriction of a fixed map $g:M\ra P$ to the preimage $(j^sf)^{-1}(A)$ of a submanifold $A\subseteq J^s(M,N)$ in terms of transversality properties of the original map $f$. Our main result is that for a reasonable class of submanifolds $A$ and a generic map $f$ the restriction $g|_{(j^sf)^{-1}(A)}$ is also generic. W…
As a generalization of slant submanifolds and semi-slant submanifolds, we introduce the notions of pointwise slant submanifolds and pointwise semi-slant sunmanifolds of an almost contact metric manifold. We obtain a characterization at each notion, investigate the topological properties of pointwise slant submanifolds, and give some examples of them. We also consider some distributions on cosymplectic, Sasakian, Kenmotsu manifolds and deal with some properties of warped product pointwise semi-slant submanifolds. Finally, we give some inequalities for the squared norm of the second fundamental …
A structure on an almost contact metric manifold is defined as a generalization of well-known cases: Sasakian, quasi-Sasakian, Kenmotsu and cosymplectic. Then we consider a semi-invariant $ξ^{\bot}$-submanifold of a manifold endowed with such a structure and two topics are studied: the integrability of distributions defined by this submanifold and characterizations for the totally umbilical case. In particular we recover results of Kenmotsu, Eum and Papaghiuc.
We introduce the notion of affine Legendrian submanifolds in Sasakian manifolds and define a canonical volume called the $ϕ$-volume as odd dimensional analogues of affine Lagrangian (totally real or purely real) geometry. Then we derive the second variation formula of the $ϕ$-volume to obtain the stability result in some $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifolds. It also implies the convexity of the $ϕ$-volume functional on the space of affine Legendrian submanifolds. Next, we introduce the notion of special affine Legendrian submanifolds in Sasaki-Einstein manifolds as a generalization of that of speci…
In this paper we construct new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex hyperbolic space with large symmetry groups, obtaining three 1-parameter families with cohomegeneity one. We characterize them as the only minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n foliated by umbilical hypersurfaces of Lagrangian subspaces RH^n of CH^n. Several suitable generalizations of the above construction allow us to get new families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n from curves in CH^1 and (n-1)-dimensional minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex space forms CP^n-1, CH^n-1 and C^n-1.…
For a given minimal Legendrian submanifold $L$ of a Sasaki-Einstein manifold we construct two families of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of $L$ and we give a lower bound for the dimension of the corresponding eigenspace. Moreover, in the case the lower bound is attained, we prove that $L$ is totally geodesic and a rigidity result about the ambient manifold. This is a generalization of a result for the standard Sasakian sphere done by Lê and Wang.
Atiyah's formulation of what is nowadays called the convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg has two parts: (a) the image of the moment map arising from a Hamiltonian action of a torus on a symplectic manifold is a convex polytope, and (b) all preimages of the moment map are connected. Part (a) was generalized by Terng to the wider context of isoparametric submanifolds in euclidean space. In this paper we prove a generalization of part (b) for a certain class of isoparametric submanifolds (more precisely, for those with all multiplicities strictly greater than 1). For generalized real f…
We prove that a submanifold with parallel focal structure, which is a generalization of isoparametric and equifocal submanifolds, induces a singular Riemannian foliation of the ambient space by its parallel and focal manifolds.
By a theorem of Mclean, the deformation space of an associative submanifold Y of an integrable G_2 manifold (M,ϕ) can be identified with the kernel of a Dirac operator D:Ω^{0}(ν) -->Ω^{0}(ν) on the normal bundle νof Y. Here, we generalize this to the non-integrable case, and also show that the deformation space becomes smooth after perturbing it by natural parameters, which corresponds to moving Y through `pseudo-associative' submanifolds. Infinitesimally, this corresponds to twisting the Dirac operator D --> D_{A} with connections A of ν. Furthermore, the normal bundles of the associative sub…
In this paper, we prove a classification theorem for the stable compact minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of an $m_1$-dimensional ($m_1\geq3$) hypersurface $M_1$ in the Euclidean space and any Riemannian manifold $M_2$, when the sectional curvature $K_{M_1}$ of $M_1$ satisfies $\frac{1}{\sqrt{m_1-1}}\leq K_{M_1}\leq 1.$ This gives a generalization to the results of F. Torralbo and F. Urbano [9], where they obtained a classification theorem for the stable minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of a sphere and any Riemannian manifold. In particular, when the ambient space is…
We give an optimal estimate for the norm of any submanifold's second fundamental form in terms of its focal radius and the lower sectional curvature bound of the ambient manifold. This is a special case of a similar theorem for intermediate Ricci curvature, and leads to a $C^{1,α}$ compactness result for submanifolds, as well as a "soul-type" structure theorem for manifolds with nonnegative $k^{th}$--intermediate Ricci curvature that have a closed submanifold with dimension $\geq k$ and infinite focal radius. To prove these results, we use the comparison lemma for Jacobi fields from arXiv:1603…
We give a spinorial representation of a submanifold of any dimension and co-dimension in a symmetric space $G/H,$ where $G$ is a complex semi-simple Lie group and $H$ is a compact real form of $G.$ This in particular includes $SL_n(\mathbb{C})/SU(n),$ and extends the previously known spinorial representation of a surface in $\mathbb{H}^3$ if $n=2.$ We also recover the Bryant representation of a surface with constant mean curvature 1 in $\mathbb{H}^3$ and its generalization for a surface with holomorphic right Gauss map in $SL_n(\mathbb{C})/SU(n).$ As a new application, we obtain a fundamental …
The warped product $N_1\times_f N_2$ of two Riemannian manifolds $(N_1,g_1)$ and $(N_2,g_2)$ is the product manifold $N_1\times N_2$ equipped with the warped product metric $g=g_1+f^2 g_2$, where $f$ is a positive function on $N_1$. The notion of warped product manifolds is one of the most fruitful generalizations of Riemannian products. Such notion plays very important roles in differential geometry as well as in physics, especially in general relativity. Warped product manifolds have been studied for a long period of time. In contrast, the study of warped product submanifolds was only initia…
In this paper we prove the existence of families of n-dimensional complete embedded minimal submanifolds of C^n with a prescribed configuration of k>1 asymptotic planes. These submanifolds are obtained by desingularizing the intersection of the asymptotes, using a gluing theorem applied to a generalization of a special lagrangian "hyperbola" found by Lawlor.
We establish two main inequalities; one for the norm of the second fundamental form and the other for the matrix of the shape operator. The results obtained are for cosymplectic manifolds and, for these, we show that the contact warped product submanifolds naturally possess a geometric property; namely $\mathcal{D}_1$-minimality which, by means of the Gauss equation, allows us to obtain an optimal general inequality. For sake of generalization, we state our hypotheses for nearly cosymplectic manifolds, then we obtain them as particular cases for cosymplectic manifolds. For the other part of th…
Unlike Legendrian submanifolds, the deformation problem of coisotropic submanifolds can be obstructed. Starting from this observation, we single out in the contact setting the special class of integral coisotropic submanifolds as the direct generalization of Legendrian submanifolds for what concerns deformation and moduli theory. Indeed, being integral coisotropic is proved to be a rigid condition, and moreover the integral coisotropic deformation problem is unobstructed with discrete moduli space.
We develop a unifed theory to study geometry of manifolds with different holonomy groups. They are classified by (1) real, complex, quaternion or octonion number they are defined over and (2) being special or not. Specialty is an orientation with respect to the corresponding normed algebra A. For example, special Riemannian A-manifolds are oriented Riemannian, Calabi-Yau, Hyperkahler and G_2-manifolds respectively. For vector bundles over such manifolds, we introduce (special) A-connections. They include holomorphic, Hermitian Yang-Mills, Anti-Self-Dual and Donaldson-Thomas connections. Simila…
Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds (HSLAG) are a natural generalization of special Lagrangian manifolds (SLAG). The latter only make sense on Calabi-Yau manifolds whereas the former are defined for any almost Kähler manifold. Special Lagrangians, and, more specificaly, fibrations by special Lagrangians play an important role in the context of the geometric mirror symmetry conjecture. However, these objects are rather scarce in nature. On the contrary, we show that HSLAG submanifolds, or fibrations, arise quite often. Many examples of HSLAG fibrations are provided by toric Käh-ler g…
The exceptional holonomy groups are G2 in 7 dimensions, and Spin(7) in 8 dimensions. Riemannian manifolds with these holonomy groups are Ricci-flat. This is a survey paper on exceptional holonomy, in two parts. Part I introduces the exceptional holonomy groups, and explains constructions for compact 7- and 8-manifolds with holonomy G2 and Spin(7). The simplest such constructions work by using techniques from complex geometry and Calabi-Yau analysis to resolve the singularities of a torus orbifold T^7/G or T^8/G, for G a finite group preserving a flat G2 or Spin(7)-structure on T^7 or T^8. Ther…
We define and study noncommutative generalizations of submanifolds and quotient manifolds, for the derivation-based differential calculus introduced by M.~Dubois-Violette and P.~Michor. We give examples to illustrate these definitions.
Isoparametric submanifolds and hypersurfaces in space forms are geometric objects that have been studied since E. Cartan. Another important class of geometric objects is the orbits of a polar action on a Riemannian manifold,e.g., the orbits of the adjoint action of a Lie group on itself. These two classes of submanifolds share comon properties. For example, they are leaves of a singular Riemannian foliation with sections (s.r.f.s. for short). The purpose of this paper is to review some results of the theory of s.r.f.s., which have been developed by the author. In addition, we give an alternati…
A conformally invariant generalization of the Willmore energy for compact immersed submanifolds of even dimension in a Riemannian manifold is derived and studied. The energy arises as the coefficient of the log term in the renormalized area expansion of a minimal submanifold in a Poincare-Einstein space with prescribed boundary at infinity. Its first variation is identified as the obstruction to smoothness of the minimal submanifold. The energy is explicitly identified for the case of submanifolds of dimension four. Variational properties of this four-dimensional energy are studied in detail w…
The Reynolds Transport Theorem, colloquially known as 'differentiation under the integral sign', is a central tool of applied mathematics, finding application in a variety of disciplines such as fluid dynamics, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics. In this work we state and prove generalizations thereof to submanifolds with corners evolving in a manifold via the flow of a smooth time-independent or time-dependent vector field. Thereby we close a practically important gap in the mathematical literature, as related works require various 'boundedness conditions' on domain or integrand that …
