We introduce fourth fundamental form $IV,$ and $i$-th curvature formulas of hypersurfaces in the four dimensional Euclidean geometry ${\mathbb{E}}^{4}$. Defining fourth fundamental form and $i$-th curvatures for hypersurfaces, we calculate them on rotational hypersurface. In addition we study rotational hypersurface satisfying $Δ^{IV}\mathbf{x=Ax}$ for some $4\times 4$ matrix $\mathbf{A.}$
We study a class of fourth order curvature flows on a compact Riemannian manifold, which includes the gradient flows of a number of quadratic geometric functionals, as for instance the L2 norm of the curvature. Such flows can develop a special kind of singularities, that could not appear in the Ricci flow, namely singularities where the manifold collapses with bounded curvature. We show that this phenomenon cannot occur if we assume a uniform positive lower bound on the Yamabe invariant. In particular, for a number of gradient flows in dimension four, such a lower bound exists if we assume a b…
We show precompactness results for solutions to parabolic fourth order geometric evolution equations. As part of the proof we obtain smoothing estimates for these flows in the presence of a curvature bound, an improvement on prior results which also require a Sobolev constant bound. As consequences of these results we show that for any solution with a finite time singularity, the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the curvature must go to infinity. Furthermore, we characterize the behavior at infinity of solutions with bounded curvature.
We prove the compactness of solutions to general fourth order elliptic equations which are L^1-perturbations of the Q-curvature equation on compact Riemannian 4-maniods. Consequently, we prove the global existence and convergence of the Q-curvature flow on a generic class of Riemannian 4-manifolds. As a by product, we give a positive answer to an open question by A. Malchiodi on the existence of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the Q-curvature problem when the Paneitz operator is positive with trivial kernel.
It is well known that a system of homogeneous second-order ordinary differential equations (spray) is necessarily isotropic in order to be metrizable by a Finsler function of scalar flag curvature. In Theorem 3.1 we show that the isotropy condition, together with three other conditions on the Jacobi endomorphism, characterize sprays that are metrizable by Finsler functions of scalar flag curvature. The proof of Theorem 3.1 provides an algorithm to construct the Finsler function of scalar flag curvature, in the case when a given spray is metrizable. One condition of Theorem 3.1, regarding the r…
Let $(\mathbf{M}^{3},J,θ_{0})$ be a closed pseudohermitian 3-manifold. Suppose the associated torsion vanishes and the associated $Q$-curvature has no kernel part with respect to the associated Paneitz operator. On such a background pseudohermitian 3-manifold, we study the change of the contact form according to a certain version of normalized $Q$-curvature flow. This is a fourth order evolution equation. We prove that the solution exists for all time and converges smoothly to a contact form of zero $Q$ -curvature. We also consider other background conditions and obtain a priori bounds up to h…
We study the biharmonic Steklov eigenvalue problem on a compact Riemannian manifold $Ω$ with smooth boundary. We give a computable, sharp lower bound of the first eigenvalue of this problem, which depends only on the dimension, a lower bound of the Ricci curvature of the domain, a lower bound of the mean curvature of its boundary and the inner radius. The proof is obtained by estimating the isoperimetric ratio of non-negative subharmonic functions on $Ω$, which is of independent interest. We also give a comparison theorem for geodesic balls.
Calabi and Cheng-Yau's Bernstein-type theorem asserts that an entire zero mean curvature graph in Lorentz-Minkowski $(n+1)$-space $\boldsymbol R^{n+1}_1$ which admits only space-like points is a hyperplane. Recently, the third and fourth authors proved a line theorem for hypersurfaces at their degenerate light-like points. Using this, we give an improvement of the Bernstein-type theorem, and we show that an entire zero mean curvature graph in $\boldsymbol R^{n+1}_1$ consisting only of space-like or light-like points is a hyperplane. This is a generalization of the first, third and fourth autho…
Chen's flow is a fourth-order curvature flow motivated by the spectral decomposition of immersions, a program classically pushed by B.-Y. Chen since the 1970s. In curvature flow terms the flow sits at the critical level of scaling together with the most popular extrinsic fourth-order curvature flow, the Willmore and surface diffusion flows. Unlike them however the famous Chen conjecture indicates that there should be no stationary nonminimal data, and so in particular the flow should drive all closed submanifolds to singularities. We investigate this idea, proving that (1) closed data becomes …
In this paper we prove a positive energy theorem related to fourth-order gravitational theories, which is a higher-order analogue of the classical ADM positive energy theorem of general relativity. We will also show that, in parallel to the corresponding situation in general relativity, this result intersects several important problems in geometric analysis. For instance, it underlies positive mass theorems associated to the Paneitz operator, playing a similar role in the positive $Q$-curvature conformal prescription problem as the Schoen-Yau positive energy theorem does for the Yamabe problem…
We introduce the discrete Einstein metrics as critical points of discrete energy on triangulated 3-manifolds, and study them by discrete curvature flow of second (fourth) order. We also study the convergence of the discrete curvature flow. Discrete curvature flow of second order is an analogue of smooth Ricci flow.
We consider Liouville-type and partial regularity results for the nonlinear fourth-order problem $$ Δ^2 u=|u|^{p-1}u\ \{in} \ \R^n,$$ where $ p>1$ and $n\ge1$. We give a complete classification of stable and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign changing), in the full exponent range. We also compute an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of extremal solutions. Our approach is motivated by Fleming's tangent cone analysis technique for minimal surfaces and Federer's dimension reduction principle in partial regularity theory. A key tool is the monotonicity …
We study compactness for nonnegative solutions of the fourth order constant $Q$-curvature equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. If the $Q$-curvature equals $-1$, we prove that all solutions are universally bounded. If the $Q$-curvature is $1$, assuming that Paneitz operator's kernel is trivial and its Green function is positive, we establish universal energy bounds on manifolds which are either locally conformally flat (LCF) or of dimension $\le 9$. Moreover, assuming in addition that a positive mass type theorem holds for the Paneitz operator, we prove compact…
In this paper, we introduce a monotonicity formula for the mean curvature flow. We also apply this monotonicity formula to study the asymptotic behavior of eternal solutions.
Motivated and inspired by the recent work of Colding [5] and Colding-Minicozzi [6] we derive several families of monotonicity formulas for manifolds with nonnegative Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature, extending the formulas in [5, 6].
This paper derives an explicit formula for Branson's Q-curvature in even-dimensional conformal geometry. The ingredients in the formula come from the Poincare metric in one higher dimension; hence the formula is called holographic. When specialized to the conformally flat case, the holographic formula expresses Q-curvature as a multiple of the Pfaffian and the divergence of a natural one-form. The paper also outlines the relation between holographic formulae for Q-curvature and a new theory of conformally covariant families of differential operators due to the second author.
We prove a monotonicity formula for mean curvature flow with surgery. This formula differs from Huisken's monotonicity formula by an extra term involving the mean curvature. As a consequence, we show that a surgically modified flow which is sufficiently close to a smooth flow in the sense of geometric measure theory is, in fact, free of surgeries. This result has applications to the longtime behavior of mean curvature flow with surgery in Riemannian three-manifolds.
In this paper we compute the Leray Schauder degree for a fourth order elliptic boundary value problem with exponential nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. This will be made by proving a Poincare'-Hopf type theorem. Moreover by using this result, together with some quantitative results about the formal set of barycenters, we are able to establish a direct and geometrically clear degree counting formula for our problem. We remark that this formula has been proven with complete different methods by Lin Wei and Wang by using blow-up type estimates.
We describe GJMS-operators as linear combinations of compositions of natural second-order differential operators. These are defined in terms of Poincaré-Einstein metrics and renormalized volume coefficients. As special cases, we find explicit formulas for conformally covariant third and fourth powers of the Laplacian. Moreover, we prove related formulas for all Branson's $Q$-curvatures. The results settle and refine conjectural statements in earlier works. The proofs rest on the theory of residue families.
For any hypersurface $M$ of a Riemannian manifold $X$, recent works introduced the notions of extrinsic conformal Laplacians and extrinsic $Q$-curvatures. Here we derive explicit formulas for the extrinsic version ${\bf P}_4$ of the Paneitz operator and the corresponding extrinsic fourth-order $Q$-curvature ${\bf Q}_4$ in general dimensions. This result involves a series of obvious local conformal invariants of the embedding $M^4 \hookrightarrow X^5$ (defined in terms of the Weyl tensor and the trace-free second fundamental form) and a non-trivial local conformal invariant $\mathcal{C}$. In tu…
We introduce a fourth order CR invariant operator on pluriharmonic functions on a three-dimensional CR manifold, generalizing to the abstract setting the operator discovered by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo. For a distinguished class of contact forms, all of which have vanishing Hirachi-$Q$ curvature, these operators determine a new scalar invariant with properties analogous to the usual $Q$-curvature. We discuss how these are similar to the (conformal) Paneitz operator and $Q$-curvature of a four-manifold, and describe its relation to some problems for three-dimensional CR manifolds.
For a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic function $u$ on a open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and $F$ a $C^{1}$ nondecreasing function on $\mathbf{R}^{*}_{+}$, we investigate the complex partial differential equations $$Δ_{g}\log\det(u_{i\bar j})=F(\det(u_{i\bar j}))\Vert\nabla_{g}\log\det(u_{i\bar j})\Vert_{g}^{2},$$ where $Δ_{g}$, $\Vert . \Vert_{g}$ and $\nabla_{g}$ are the Laplacian, tensor norm and the Levi-Civita connexion , respectively, with respect to the Kähler metric $g=\partial\bar\partial u$. We show that the above PDE's has a Bernstein property, i.e $\det(u_{i\bar j})=\hbox{constant…
We establish several nonuniqueness results for the problem of finding complete conformal metrics with constant (fourth-order) $Q$-curvature on compact and noncompact manifolds of dimension $\geq5$. Infinitely many branches of metrics with constant $Q$-curvature, but without constant scalar curvature, are found to bifurcate from Berger metrics on spheres and complex projective spaces. These provide examples of nonisometric metrics with the same constant negative $Q$-curvature in a conformal class with negative Yamabe invariant, echoing the absence of a Maximum Principle. We also discover infini…
In this paper we discuss curvature tensors in the context of Absolute Parallelism geometry. Different curvature tensors are expressed in a compact form in terms of the torsion tensor of the canonical connection. Using the Bianchi identities some other identities are derived from the expressions obtained. These identities, in turn, are used to reveal some of the properties satisfied by an intriguing fourth order tensor which we refer to as Wanas tensor. A further condition on the canonical connection is imposed, assuming it is semi-symmetric. The formulae thus obtained, together with other form…
