In this paper, we study biconservative surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field ($PNMC$) in the $4$-dimensional unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^4$. First, we study the existence and uniqueness of such surfaces. We obtain that there exists a $2$-parameter family of non-isometric abstract surfaces that admit a (unique) $PNMC$ biconservative immersion in $\mathbb{S}^4$. Then, we obtain the local parametrization of these surfaces in the $5$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^5$.
In this paper, we study biconservative surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector in $\mathbb{E}^4$. We obtain complete local classification in $\mathbb{E}^4$ for a biconservative PNMCV surface. We also give an example to show the existence of PNMCV biconservative surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^4$.
In this paper, we study biconservative hypersurfaces of index 2 in $\mathbb E^{5}_{2}$. We give the complete classification of biconservative hypersurfaces with diagonalizable shape operator at exactly three distinct principal curvatures. We also give an explicit example of biconservative hypersurfaces with four distinct principal curvatures.
In this paper, using the framework of equivariant differential geometry, we study proper $SO(p+1) \times SO(q+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+q+2$) and proper $SO(p+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+2$). Moreover, we show that, in these two classes of invariant families, there exists no proper biharmonic immersion.
A biconservative submanifold of a Riemannian manifold is a sub- manifold with divergence free stress-energy tensor with respect to bienergy. These are generalizations of biharamonic submanifolds. In 2013, B. Y. Chen and M.I. Munteanu proved that $δ(2)$-ideal and $δ(3)$-ideal biharmonic hypersurfaces in Euclidean space are minimal. In this paper, we generalize this result for $δ(2)$-ideal and $δ(3)$-ideal bisonservative hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. Also, we study $δ(4)$-ideal biconservative hypersurfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{6}$ having constant scalar curvature. We prove that su…
In this paper we consider the complete biconservative surfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ and in the unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$. Biconservative surfaces in 3-dimensional space forms are characterized by the fact that the gradient of their mean curvature function is an eigenvector of the shape operator, and we are interested in studying local and global properties of such surfaces with non-constant mean curvature function. We determine the simply connected, complete Riemannian surfaces that admit biconservative immersions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $\mathbb{S}^3$. Moreover, such imm…
We study the uniqueness of complete biconservative surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that the only complete biconservative regular surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are either $CMC$ or certain surfaces of revolution. In particular, any compact biconservative regular surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a round sphere.
In this note we improve a gap result concerning the range of the mean curvature of complete $CMC$ proper-biharmonic hypersurfaces in unit Euclidean spheres.
In the present study we consider knotted spheres in Euclidean $4$-space $ \mathbb{E}^{4}$. Firstly, we give some basic curvature properties of knotted spheres in $ \mathbb{E}^{4}$. Further, we obtained some results related with the conjugate nets and Laplace transforms of these kind of surfaces.
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
We use bifurcation theory to show the existence of infinite sequences isometric embeddings of tori with constant mean curvature (CMC) in Euclidean spheres that are not isometrically congruent to the CMC Clifford tori, and accumulating at some CMC Clifford torus.
We study the existence or not of harmonic diffeomorphisms between certain domains in the Euclidean 2-sphere. In particular, we show harmonic diffeomorphisms from circular domains in the complex plane onto finitely punctured spheres, with at least two punctures. This result follows from a general existence theorem for maximal graphs in the Lorentzian product $M\times\mathbb{R}_1,$ where $M$ is an arbitrary $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold, $n\geq 2.$ In contrast, we show that there is no harmonic diffeomorphism from the unit complex disc onto the once punctured sphere and no harmonic…
We obtain the parametric equations of all biharmonic Legendre curves and Hopf cylinders in the 3-dimensional unit sphere endowed with the modified Sasakian structure defined by Tanno.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of all rotational linear Weingarten surface into the Euclidean sphere S3. These surfaces are characterized by a linear relation aH+bK=c, where H and K stand for their mean and Gaussian curvatures, respectively, whereas a; b and c are real constants.
In this paper we have investigated some aspects of gradient $ρ$-Einstein Ricci soliton in a complete Riemannian manifold. First, we have proved that the compact gradient $ρ$-Einstein soliton is isometric to the Euclidean sphere by showing that the scalar curvature becomes constant. Second, we have showed that in a non-compact gradient $ρ$-Einstein soliton satisfying some integral condition, the scalar curvature vanishes.
Let M be a closed minimal hypersurface in 5-dimensional Euclidean sphere with constant nonnegative scalar curvature. We prove that, if the sum of the cubes of all principal curvatures and the number of distinct principal curvatures are constant, then M is isoparametric. Moreover, We give all possible values for squared length of the second fundamental form of M. This result provides another piece of supporting evidence to the Chern conjecture.
We construct Yang-Mills connections on SO(n)-bundles over spheres equipped with the Euclidean metric. We use a cohomogeneity one group action on the bundle to reduce the Yang-Mills-equation to a system of ordinary differential equations. The system is shown to have solutions by variational methods, using ideas from harmonic map theory. Examples include Yang-Mills connections on each of the countably many principal SO(6)-bundles over $S^6$, and countably many Yang-Mills connections on $TS^n$ for $n\in\{5,...,9\}$.
Let $M$ be a smooth, connected, compact submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$ without boundary and of dimension $k\geq 2$. Let $\mathbb{S}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^{k+1}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ denote the $k$-dimesnional unit sphere. We show if $M$ has reach equal to one, then its volume satisfies $\text{vol}(M)\geq \text{vol}(\mathbb{S}^k)$ with equality holding only if $M$ is congruent to $\mathbb{S}^k$.
In this study, we investigate the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres. Just as focal curve is the locus of the centers of the osculating spheres, we investigate the geometrical interpretation on the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres. We proved that if the curve is a principal line, the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres of the curve is an evolute curve. Then, we give the relations between this evolute curve and the focal curve. Also, we give some relations between helices, slant helices and the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres of the curve.
Isometric immersions of constant curvature one metrics on the 2-sphere with two conical singularities into Euclidean 3-space: A partial solution to the Gálvez-Hauswirth-Mira problem
We prove that hypersurfaces of $\R^{n+1}$ which are almost extremal for the Reilly inequality on $λ_1$ and have $L^p$-bounded mean curvature ($p>n$) are Hausdorff close to a sphere, have almost constant mean curvature and have a spectrum which asymptotically contains the spectrum of the sphere. We prove the same result for the Hasanis-Koutroufiotis inequality on extrinsic radius. We also prove that when a supplementary $L^q$ bound on the second fundamental is assumed, the almost extremal manifolds are Lipschitz close to a sphere when $q>n$, but not necessarily diffeomorphic to a sphere when $q…
A conformal map from a Riemann surface to a Euclidean space of dimension greater than or equal to three is explained by using the Clifford algebra, in a similar fashion to quaternionic holomorphic geometry of surfaces in the Euclidean three- or four-space. The Weierstrass representation, the spin transform, the Darboux transforms, surfaces of parallel mean curvature vector, families of flat connections associated with a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a sphere are explained. The degree of the spinor bundle associated with a conformal immersion is calculated. Analogues of a polar surface…
In this paper we investigate $m$-dimensional complete minimal submanifolds in Euclidean spheres with index of relative nullity at least $m-2$ at any point. These are austere submanifolds in the sense of Harvey and Lawson \cite{harvey} and were initially studied by Bryant \cite{br}. For any dimension and codimension there is an abundance of non-complete examples fully described by Dajczer and Florit \cite{DF2} in terms of a class of surfaces, called elliptic, for which the ellipse of curvature of a certain order is a circle at any point. Under the assumption of completeness, it turns out that a…
The consideration of the so-called rotation minimizing frames allows for a simple and elegant characterization of plane and spherical curves in Euclidean space via a linear equation relating the coefficients that dictate the frame motion. In this work, we extend these investigations to characterize curves that lie on a geodesic sphere or totally geodesic hypersurface in a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature. Using that geodesic spherical curves are normal curves, i.e., they are the image of an Euclidean spherical curve under the exponential map, we are able to characterize geodesic spher…
We consider the Jacobi operator, defined on a closed oriented hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space with the same volume of the unit sphere. We show a local generalization for the classical result of the Willmore functional for the Euclidean sphere. As a consequence, we prove that the first eigenvalue of the Jacobi operator in the Euclidean sphere is a local maximum and this result is a global one in the closed oriented surfaces space of $\mathbb{R}^3$ and genus zero.
Let $(M,\langle,\rangle_{TM})$ be a Riemannian manifold. It is well-known that the Sasaki metric on $TM$ is very rigid but it has nice properties when restricted to $T^{(r)}M=\{u\in TM,|u|=r \}$. In this paper, we consider a general situation where we replace $TM$ by a vector bundle $E\longrightarrow M$ endowed with a Euclidean product $\langle,\rangle_E$ and a connection $\nabla^E$ which preserves $\langle,\rangle_E$. We define the Sasaki metric on $E$ and we consider its restriction $h$ to $E^{(r)}=\{a\in E,\langle a,a\rangle_E=r^2 \}$. We study the Riemannian geometry of $(E^{(r)},h)$ gener…
We give an example of an eversion of the 2-sphere in the Euclidean 3-space, inspired by Morse theory, with a unique quadruple point. No homotopical tool is used.
We construct large families of harmonic morphisms which are holomorphic with respect to Hermitian structures by finding heierarchies of Weierstrass-type representations. This enables us to find new examples of complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Euclidean spaces and spheres.
In this paper we first prove a characterization formula for biharmonic maps in Euclidean spheres and, as an application, we construct a family of biharmonic maps from a flat $2$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}$ into the $3$-dimensional unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$. Then, for the special case of maps between spheres whose components are given by homogeneous polynomials of the same degree, we find a more specific form for their bitension field. Further, we apply this formula to the case when the degree is $2$, and we obtain the classification of all proper biharmonic quadratic forms from $…
We construct free boundary minimal surfaces (FBMS) embedded in the unit ball in the Euclidean three-space which are compact, lie arbitrarily close to the boundary unit sphere, are of genus zero, and their boundary has an arbitrarily large number of connected boundary components. The construction is by PDE gluing methods and the surfaces are desingularizations of unions of many catenoidal annuli and two flat discs. The union of the boundaries of the catenoidal annuli and discs is the union of a large finite number of parallel circles contained in the unit sphere, with each parallel circle conta…
We give sufficient conditions on initial and target measures supported on the sphere $§^n$ to ensure the solution to the optimal transport problem with the cost $|x-y|^2/2$ is a diffeomorphism.
We extend to higher dimensions earlier sharp bounds for the area of two dimensional free boundary minimal surfaces contained in a geodesic ball of the round sphere. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean case.
There are several well-known characterizations of the sphere as a regular surface in the Euclidean space. By means of a purely synthetic technique, we get a rigidity result for the sphere without any curvature conditions, nor completeness or compactness. As well as a dual result for the hyperbolic plane, the spacelike sphere in the Minkowski space.
We show some characterizations of hyperspheres in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\Bbb E}^{n+1}$ with intrinsic and extrinsic properties such as the $n$-dimensional area of the sections cut off by hyperplanes, the $(n+1)$-dimensional volume of regions between parallel hyperplanes, and the $n$-dimensional surface area of regions between parallel hyperplanes. We also establish two characterizations of elliptic paraboloids in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\Bbb E}^{n+1}$ with the $n$-dimensional area of the sections cut off by hyperplanes and the $(n+1)$-dimensional volume of…
We give a local representation for the pseudoholomorphic surfaces in Euclidean spheres in terms of holomorphic data. Similar to the case of the generalized Weierstrass representation of Hoffman and Osserman, we assign such a surface in $\Sf^{2n}$ to a given set of $n$ holomorphic functions defined on a simply-connected domain in $\C$.
A fibration of a Riemannian manifold is fiberwise homogeneous if there are isometries of the manifold onto itself, taking any given fiber to any other one, and preserving fibers. Examples are fibrations of Euclidean n-space by parallel n-planes, and the Hopf fibrations of the round n-sphere by great n-spheres. In this paper, we describe all the fiberwise homogeneous fibrations of Euclidean and hyperbolic 3-space by geodesics. Our main result is that, up to fiber-preserving isometries, there is precisely a one-parameter family of such fibrations of Euclidean 3-space, and a two-parameter family …
In this paper we consider the equiform motion of a sphere in Euclidean space $\mathbf{E}^7$. We study and analyze the corresponding kinematic three dimensional surface under the hypothesis that its scalar curvature $\mathbf{K}$ is constant. Under this assumption, we prove that $|\mathbf{K}|<2$.
We prove $ε$-closeness of hypersurfaces to a sphere in Euclidean space under the assumption that the traceless second fundamental form is $δ$-small compared to the mean curvature. We give the explicit dependence of $δ$ on $ε$ within the class of uniformly convex hypersurfaces with bounded volume.
In this paper, we give pinching Theorems for the first nonzero eigenvalue $λ$ of the Laplacian on the compact hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space. Indeed, we prove that if the volume of $M$ is 1 then, for any $ε>0$, there exists a constant $C\_ε$ depending on the dimension $n$ of $M$ and the $L\_{\infty}$-norm of the mean curvature $H$, so that if the $L\_{2p}$-norm $\|H\|\_{2p}$ ($p\geq 2$) of $H$ satisfies $n\|H\|\_{2p}-C\_ε<λ$, then the Hausdorff-distance between $M$ and a round sphere of radius $(n/λ)^{1/2}$ is smaller than $ε$. Furthermore, we prove that if $C$ is a small enough constant…
We provide explicit, simple, geometric formulas for free involutions rho of Euclidean spheres that are not conjugate to the antipodal involution. Therefore the quotient S^n/rho is a manifold that is homotopically equivalent but not diffeomorphic to RP^n. We use these formulas for constructing explicit non-trivial elements in pi_1 Diff(S^5) and pi_1 Diff(S^13) and to provide explicit formulas for non-cancellation phenomena in group actions.
We show the regularity of, and derive a-priori estimates for (weakly) harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Euclidean sphere under the assumption that the image avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator. The proofs combine constructions of strictly convex functions and the regularity theory of quasi-linear elliptic systems. We apply these results to the spherical and Euclidean Bernstein problems for minimal hypersurfaces, obtaining new conditions under which compact minimal hypersurfaces in spheres or complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces are trivial.
Non-transitive subgroups of the orthogonal group play an important role in the non-Euclidean geometry. If $G$ is a closed subgroup in the orthogonal group such that the orbit of a single Euclidean unit vector does not cover the (Euclidean) unit sphere centered at the origin then there always exists a non-Euclidean Minkowski functional such that the elements of $G$ preserve the Minkowskian length of vectors. In other words the Minkowski geometry is an alternative of the Euclidean geometry for the subgroup $G$. It is rich of isometries if $G$ is "close enough" to the orthogonal group or at least…
