Rozansky and Witten proposed in 1996 a family of new three-dimensional topological quantum field theories, indexed by compact (or asymptotically flat) hyperkaehler manifolds. As a byproduct they proved that hyperkaehler manifolds also give rise to Vassiliev weight systems. These may be thought of as invariants of hyperkaehler manifolds, so the theory is of interest to geometers as well as to low-dimensional topologists. This paper surveys the geometrical construction of the weight systems, how they may be integrated into the framework of Lie algebra weight systems (joint work with Simon Willerton), their applications, and an approach to a rigorous construction of the TQFTs (joint work with Justin Sawon and Simon Willerton).

Generalisations of Rozansky-Witten invariants

We survey briefly the definition of the Rozansky-Witten invariants, and review their relevance to the study of compact hyperkahler manifolds. We consider how various generalisations of the invariants might prove useful for the study of non-compact hyperkahler manifolds, of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds, and of relations between hyperkahler manifolds and Lie algebras. The paper concludes with a list of additional problems.

Rozansky-Witten invariants via formal geometry

We show that recently constructed invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds and of hyperkaehler manifolds (L.Rozansky and E.Witten, hep-th/9612216) come from characteristic classes of foliations and from Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. On the Rozansky-Witten weight systems

Ideas of Rozansky and Witten, as developed by Kapranov, show that a complex symplectic manifold X gives rise to Vassiliev weight systems. In this paper we study these weight systems by using D(X), the derived category of coherent sheaves on X. The main idea (stated here a little imprecisely) is that D(X) is the category of modules over the shifted tangent sheaf, which is a Lie algebra object in D(X); the weight systems then arise from this Lie algebra in a standard way. Equivariant Rozansky-Witten classes and TFTs

We first construct the Rozansky-Witten model coupled to BF theory and Chern-Simons theory using the Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) method. Then we apply the machinery developed in some earlier papers about AKSZ theories and characteristic classes to these concrete models: the BF-Rozansky-Witten model and the Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten model. Rozansky-Witten-type invariants from symplectic Lie pairs

We introduce symplectic structures on "Lie pairs" of (real or complex) algebroids as studied by Chen, Stienon and the second author (From Atiyah classes to homotopy Leibniz algebras, arXiv:1204.1075), encompassing homogeneous symplectic spaces, symplectic manifolds with a $\mathfrak g$-action and holomorphic symplectic manifolds. We show that to each such symplectic Lie pair are associated Rozansky-Witten-type invariants of three-manifolds and knots, given respectively by weight systems on trivalent and chord diagrams.

Rozansky-Witten invariants via Atiyah classes

Recently, L.Rozansky and E.Witten (hep-th/9612216) associated to any hyperKaehler manifold X a system of "weights" (numbers, one for each trivalent graph) and used them to construct invariants of topological 3-manifolds. We give a very simple cohomological definition of these weights in terms of the Atiyah class of X (the obstruction to existence of a holomorphic connection). BV quantization of the Rozansky-Witten model

We investigate the perturbative aspects of Rozansky-Witten's 3d $σ$-model using Costello's approach to the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Rozansky-Witten geometry of Coulomb branches and logarithmic knot invariants

By studying Rozansky-Witten theory with non-compact target spaces we find new connections with knot invariants whose physical interpretation was not known. This opens up several new avenues, which include a new formulation of $q$-series invariants of 3-manifolds in terms of affine Grassmannians and a generalization of Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki knot invariants.

Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten topological field theory

We construct and study a new topological field theory in three dimensions. It is a hybrid between Chern-Simons and Rozansky-Witten theory and can be regarded as a topologically-twisted version of the N=4 d=3 supersymmetric gauge theory recently discovered by Gaiotto and Witten. Formal Global Perturbative Quantization of the Rozansky-Witten Model in the BV-BFV Formalism

We describe a globalization construction for the Rozansky-Witten model in the BV-BFV formalism for a source manifold with and without boundary in the classical and quantum case. Topological quantum field theory and hyperkähler geometry

Rozansky and Witten proposed a 3-dimensional sigma-model whose target space is a hyperkähler manifold. They conjectured that this theory has an associated TQFT, with Hilbert spaces given by certain cohomology groups of the hyperkähler manifold. On the other hand, there is a certain modified TQFT constructed by Murakami and Ohtsuki using the universal quantum invariant. We explain how the Rozansky-Witten TQFT can be obtained from the latter by applying a `hyperkähler weight system'.

Extended TQFTs and Algebraic Geometry

We study a potential method for constructing the Rozansky--Witten TQFT as an extended $(1+1+1)$-TQFT. We construct a $2$-category consisting of schemes, complexes of sheaves and sheaf morphisms and show that there are $(1+1)$-TQFTs valued in the truncation of this category which have state spaces that agree with the Rozansky--Witten TQFT. However, we also show that if such a TQFT is based on a reduced Noetherian scheme, it cannot be extended upwards to a $(1+1+1)$-TQFT.

Lie algebras in symmetric monoidal categories

We study algebras defined by identities in symmetric monoidal categories. Our focus is on Lie algebras. Besides usual Lie algebras, there are examples appearing in the study of knot invariants and Rozansky-Witten invariants. Our main result is a proof of Westbury's conjecture for K3-surface: there exists a Lie algebra homomorphism from Vogel's universal simple Lie algebra to the Lie algebra describing the Rozansky-Witten invariants of a K3-surface. Most of the paper involves setting up a proper language to discuss the problem and we formulate nine open questions as we proceed.
