We study the algebraic dimension a(X) of a compact hyperkaehler manfold of dimension 2n. We show that a(X) is at most n unless X is projective. If a compact Kaehler manifold with algebraic dimension 0 and Kodaira dimension 0 has a minimal model, then only the values 0,n and 2n are possible. In case of middle dimension, the algebraic reduction is holomorphic Lagrangian. If n = 2, then - without any assumptions - the algebraic dimension only takes the values 0,2 and 4. The paper gives structure results for "generalised hyperkaehler" manifolds and studies nef lines bundles.
We construct examples of compact hyperkaehler manifolds with torsion (HKT manifolds) which are not homogeneous and not locally conformal hyperkaehler. Consider a total space T of a tangent bundle over a hyperkaehler manifold M. The manifold T is hypercomplex, but it is never hyperkaehler, unless M is flat. We show that T admits an HKT-structure. We also prove that a quotient of T by a $\Z$-action $v \arrow q^n v$ is HKT, for any real number $q\in \R$, $q>1$. This quotient is compact, if M is compact. A more general version of this construction holds for all hyperholomorphic bundles with holono…
In this short note we prove that the number of deformation types of compact hyperkaehler manifolds with prescribed second cohomology and second Chern class is finite. The proof uses the finiteness result of Kollar and Matsusaka, a formula by Hitchin and Sawon and the surjectivity of the period map.
Compact hyperkaehler manifolds are higher-dimensional generalizations of K3 surfaces. The classical Global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces, however, does not hold in higher dimensions. More precisely, a compact hyperkaehler manifold is in general not determined by its natural weight-two Hodge structure. The text gives an account of a recent theorem of M. Verbitsky, which can be regarded as a weaker version of the Global Torelli theorem phrased in terms of the injectivity of the period map on the connected components of the moduli space of marked manifolds.
Let M be a compact locally conformal hyperkaehler manifold. We prove a version of Kodaira-Nakano vanishing theorem for M. This is used to show that M admits no holomorphic differential forms, and the cohomology of the structure sheaf $H^i(O_M)$ vanishes for i>1. We also prove that the first Betti number of M is 1. This leads to a structure theorem for locally conformally hyperkaehler manifolds, describing them in terms of 3-Sasakian geometry. Similar results are proven for compact Einstein-Weyl locally conformal Kaehler manifolds.
Paper withdrawn due to errors (superseded by math.AG/0604303). Proposition 11.4 is false, Section 12 is false, and the main statement is true only for bundles $B$ with $c_1(B)$ SU(2)-invariant.
Let M be a hyperkaehler manifold, not necessarily compact, and $S\cong CP^1$ the set of complex structures induced by the quaternionic action. Trianalytic subvariety of M is a subvariety which is complex analytic with respect to all $I \in CP^1$. We show that for all $I \in S$ outside of a countable set, all compact complex subvarieties $Z \subset (M,I)$ are trianalytic. For M compact, this result was proven in alg-geom/9403006 using Hodge theory.
We study the volume growth of hyperkaehler manifolds of type $A_{\infty}$ constructed by Anderson-Kronheimer-LeBrun and Goto. These are noncompact complete 4-dimensional hyperkaehler manifolds of infinite topological type. These manifolds have the same topology but the hyperkaehler metrics are depends on the choice of parameters. By taking a certain parameter, we show that there exists a hyperkaehler manifold of type $A_{\infty}$ whose volume growth is r^a for each 3<a<4.
A holomorphic Lagrangian fibration on a holomorphically symplectic manifold is a holomorphic map with Lagrangian fibers. It is known that a given compact manifold admits only finitely many holomorphic symplectic structures, up to deformation. We prove that a given compact manifold with $b_2 \geq 7$ admits only finitely many deformation types of holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations. We also prove that all known hyperkahler manifolds are never Kobayashi hyperbolic.
Let M be a hypercomplex Hermitian manifold, (M,I) the same manifold considered as a complex Hermitian with a complex structure I induced by the quaternions. The standard linear-algebraic construction produces a canonical nowhere degenerate (2,0)-form on (M,I). It is well known that M is hyperkaehler if and only if the form Ωis closed with respect to the de Rham differential. The M is called HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) if this form is closed with respect to the Dolbeault differential (this condition is weaker. Conjecturally, all compact hypercomplex manifolds admit an HKT-metrics. We exploi…
We study the hyperkaehler geometry of a regular semisimple adjoint orbit of SL(k,C) via the algebraic geometry of the corresponding reducible spectral curve.
We generalize the hyperkaehler quotient construction to the situation where there is no group action preserving the hyperkaehler structure but for each complex structure there is an action of a complex group preserving the corresponding complex symplectic structure. Many (known and new) hyperkaehler manifolds arise as quotients in this setting. For example, all hyperkaehler structures on semisimple coadjoint orbits of a complex semisimple Lie group $G$ arise as such quotients of $T^*G$. The generalized Legendre transform construction of Lindstroem and Rocek is also explained in this framework.
In this paper, we study the compactness of a boundary value problem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds. We show that under certain topological conditions and the positive mean curvature condition on the boundary, a sequence of hyperkaehler triples converges smoothly up to diffeomorphisms if and only if their restrictions to the boundary converge smoothly up to diffeomorphisms. We also generalize this result to torsion-free hypersymplectic triples.
We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces
Let $M$ be the moduli space of complex Lagrangian submanifolds of a hyperKähler manifold $X$, and let $\varpi : \widehat{\mathcal{A}} \rightarrow M$ be the relative Albanese over $M$. We prove that $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ has a natural holomorphic symplectic structure. The projection $\varpi$ defines a completely integrable structure on the symplectic manifold $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$. In particular, the fibers of $\varpi$ are complex Lagrangians with respect to the symplectic form on $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$. We also prove analogous results for the relative Picard over $M$.
Let M be a compact, holomorphically symplectic Kahler manifold, and $η$ a (1,1)-current which is nef (a limit of Kahler forms). Assume that the cohomology class of $η$ is parabolic, that is, its top power vanishes. We prove that all Lelong sets of $η$ are coisotropic. When M is generic, this is used to show that all Lelong numbers of $η$ vanish. We prove that any hyperkahler manifold with Pic(M) of rank 1 has non-trivial coisotropic subvarieties, if a generator of Pic(M) is parabolic.
A construction is introduced for modifying hyperkaehler manifolds with tri-Hamiltonian circle action, that in favourable situations increases the second Betti number by one. This is based on the symplectic cut construction of Lerman. In 4 or 8 dimensions the construction may be interpreted as adding a D6-brane. A number of examples are given and generalisations to three-Sasaki and hypersymplectic geometry discussed.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we develop a twistor-based method of constructing hyperkaehler metrics from holomorphic functions and elliptic curves. As an application, we revisit the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold and derive in an explicit holomorphic coordinate basis closed-form formulas for, among other things, the metric, the holomorphic symplectic form and all three Kaehler potentials.
Let M be a compact simply connected hyperkähler (or holomorphically symplectic) manifold, \dim H^2(M)=n. Assume that M is not a product of hyperkaehler manifolds. We prove that the Lie algebra so(n-3,3) acts by automorphisms on the cohomology ring H^*(M). Under this action, the space H^2(M) is isomorphic to the fundamental representation of so(n-3,3). Let A^r be the subring of H^*(M) generated by H^2(M). We construct an action of the Lie algebra so(n-2,4) on the space A, which preserves A^r. The space A^r is an irreducible representation of so(n-2,4). This makes it possible to compute the ring…
The geometry arising from Michelson & Strominger's study of N=4B supersymmetric quantum mechanics with superconformal D(2,1;alpha)-symmetry is a hyperKaehler manifold with torsion (HKT) together with a special homothety. It is shown that different parameters alpha are related via changes in potentials for the HKT target spaces. For alpha not 0 or -1, we describe how each such HKT 4m-manifold M is derived from a space N of dimension 4m-4 which is quaternionic Kaehler with torsion and carries an Abelian instanton.
We define the Kobayashi quotient of a complex variety by identifying points with vanishing Kobayashi pseudodistance between them and show that if a compact complex manifold has an automorphism whose order is infinite, then the fibers of this quotient map are nontrivial. We prove that the Kobayashi quotients associated to ergodic complex structures on a compact manifold are isomorphic. We also give a proof of Kobayashi's conjecture on the vanishing of the pseudodistance for hyperkähler manifolds having Lagrangian fibrations without multiple fibers in codimension one. For a hyperbolic automorphi…
A hyperkaehler manifold with a circle action fixing just one complex structure admits a natural a hyperholomorphic line bundle. This forms the basis for the construction of a corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifold in the work of A.Haydys. We construct in this paper the corresponding holomorphic line bundle on twistor space and compute many examples, including monopole and Higgs bundle moduli spaces. We also show that the bundle on twistor space has a natural meromorphic connection which realizes it as the quantum line bundle for the hyperkaehler family of holomorphic symplectic structures…
We classify those manifolds mentioned in the title which have finite topological type. Namely we show any such connected M is isomorphic to a hyperkaehler quotient of a flat quaternionic vector space by an abelian group. We also show that a compact connected and simply connected 3-Sasakian manifold of dimension 4n-1 whose isometry group has rank n+1 is isometric to a 3-Sasakian quotient of a sphere by a torus. As a corollary, a compact connected quaternion-Kaehler 4n-manifold with positive scalar curvature and isometry group of rank n+1 is isometric to the quaternionic projective space or the …
Let $X$ be a hyperkaehler manifold. Trianalytic subvarieties of $X$ are subvarieties which are complex analytic with respect to all complex structures induced by the hyperkaehler structure. Given a 2-dimensional complex torus $T$, the Hilbert scheme $T^{[n]}$ classifying zero-dimensional subschemes of $T$ admits a hyperkaehler structure. A finite cover of $T^{[n]}$ is a product of $T$ and a simply connected hyperkaehler manifold $K^{[n-1]}$, called generalized Kummer variety. We show that for $T$ generic, the corresponding generalized Kummer variety has no trianalytic subvarieties. This implie…
A trisymplectic structure on a complex 2n-manifold is a triple of holomorphic symplectic forms such that any linear combination of these forms has constant rank 2n, n or 0, and degenerate forms in $Ω$ belong to a non-degenerate quadric hypersurface. We show that a trisymplectic manifold is equipped with a holomorphic 3-web and the Chern connection of this 3-web is holomorphic, torsion-free, and preserves the three symplectic forms. We construct a trisymplectic structure on the moduli of regular rational curves in the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold, and define a trisymplectic reductio…
We consider locally conformal Kaehler geometry as an equivariant (homothetic) Kaehler geometry: a locally conformal Kaehler manifold is, up to equivalence, a pair (K,Γ) where K is a Kaehler manifold and Γa discrete Lie group of biholomorphic homotheties acting freely and properly discontinuously. We define a new invariant of a locally conformal Kaehler manifold (K,Γ) as the rank of a natural quotient of Γ, and prove its invariance under reduction. This equivariant point of view leads to a proof that locally conformal Kaehler reduction of compact Vaisman manifolds produces Vaisman manifolds and…
Let $(M,I,J,K)$ be a hyperkaehler manifold, $\dim_\R M =4n$. We study positive, Dolbeault-closed $(2p,0)$-forms on $(M,I)$. These forms are quaternionic analogues of the positive $(p,p)$-forms. We construct an injective homomorphism mapping Dolbeault-closed $(2p,0)$-forms to closed $(n+p,n+p)$-forms, and positive $(2p,0)$-forms to positive $(n+p,n+p)$-forms. This construction is used to prove a hyperkaehler version of the classical Skoda-El Mir theorem, which says that a trivial extension of a closed, positive current over a pluripolar set is again closed. We also prove the hyperkaehler versio…
In this paper we study the birational geometry of HyperKaehler manifolds by combining the method of minimal model program and the traditional approach of symplectic geometry.
Rozansky and Witten proposed in 1996 a family of new three-dimensional topological quantum field theories, indexed by compact (or asymptotically flat) hyperkaehler manifolds. As a byproduct they proved that hyperkaehler manifolds also give rise to Vassiliev weight systems. These may be thought of as invariants of hyperkaehler manifolds, so the theory is of interest to geometers as well as to low-dimensional topologists. This paper surveys the geometrical construction of the weight systems, how they may be integrated into the framework of Lie algebra weight systems (joint work with Simon Willer…
We study the hyperholomorphic line bundle on a hyperkaehler manifold with circle action introduced by A Haydys, and in particular show how it transforms under a hyperkaehler quotient. Applications include ALE spaces and coadjoint orbits.
A hypercomplex structure on a differentiable manifold consists of three integrable almost complex structures that satisfy quaternionic relations. If, in addition, there exists a metric on the manifold which is Hermitian with respect to the three structures, and such that the corresponding Hermitian forms are closed, the manifold is said to be hyperkaehler. In the paper "Non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections", Kaledin and Verbitsky proved that the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold admits a balanced metric; these were first studied in the article "On the existence of special metrics in com…
We study generalized Killing spinors on compact Einstein manifolds with positive scalar curvature. This problem is related to the existence compact Einstein hypersurfaces in manifolds with parallel spinors, or equivalently, in Riemannian products of flat spaces, Calabi-Yau, hyperkaehler, G_2 and Spin(7) manifolds.
We show that recently constructed invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds and of hyperkaehler manifolds (L.Rozansky and E.Witten, hep-th/9612216) come from characteristic classes of foliations and from Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. In particular, any symplectic foliation gives invariants of 3-manifolds. Our preprint has many intersections with the preprint alg-geom/9704009 by M.Kapranov.
We show that a complete simply-connected hyperkaehler 4-manifold with an isometric triholomorphic circle action is obtained from the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz with some suitable harmonic function.
The cohomology of a compact Kaehler (resp. hyperKaehler) manifold admits the action of the Lie algebra so(2,1) (resp. so(4,1)). In this paper we show, following an idea of Witten, how this action follows from supersymmetry, in particular from the symmetries of certain supersymmetric sigma models. In addition, many of the fundamental identities in Hodge-Lefschetz theory are also naturally derived from supersymmetry.
In a previous paper we proved a lower bound for the spectrum of the Dirac operator on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds. In the present article we show that the only manifolds in the limit case, i.e. the only manifolds where the lower bound is attained as an eigenvalue, are the quaternionic projective spaces. We use the equivalent formulation in terms of the quaternionic Killing equation and show that a nontrivial solution defines a parallel spinor on the associated hyperkaehler manifold.
We present a novel formulation of the instanton equations in 8-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. This formulation reveals these equations as the last member of a series of gauge-theoretical equations associated with the real division algebras, including flatness in dimension 2 and (anti-)self-duality in 4. Using this formulation we prove that (in flat space) these equations can be understood in terms of moment maps on the space of connections and the moduli space of solutions is obtained via a generalised symplectic quotient: a Kaehler quotient in dimension 2, a hyperkaehler quotient in dimension…
Tubular neighborhoods play an important role in differential topology. We have applied these constructions to geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. At first, we consider deformations of tensor structures on a normal tubular neighborhood of a submanifold in a Riemannian manifold.Further, an almost hyperHermitian structure has been constructed on the tangent bundle TM with help of the Riemannian connection of an almost Hermitian structure on a manifold M then, we consider an embedding of the almost Hermitian manifold M in the corresponding normal tubular neighborhood of the null section in the…
We define and study certain hyperkaehler manifolds which capture the asymptotic behaviour of the SU(2)-monopole metric in regions where monopoles break down into monopoles of lower charges. The rate at which these new metrics approximate the monopole metric is exponential, as for the Gibbons-Manton metric.
This paper is concerned with the construction of special metrics on non-compact 4-manifolds which arise as resolutions of complex orbifold singularities. Our study is close in spirit to the construction of the hyperkaehler gravitational instantons, but we focus on a different class of singularities. We show that any resolution X of an isolated cyclic quotient singularity admits a complete scalar-flat Kaehler metric (which is hyperkaehler if and only if c_1(X)=0), and that if c_1(X)<0 then X also admits a complete (non-Kaehler) self-dual Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature. In particul…
In this paper we continue to study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Kahler manifolds and algebraic geometry. Our main focus is on the algebro-geometric meaning of Riemannian tangent cones and rescaled limits.
In this thesis, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and algebraic Poisson schemes in the framework of Kodaira-Spencer's analytic deformation theory and Grothendieck's algebraic deformation theory.
In this paper we study regular irreducible algebraic monoids over $\fldc$ equipped with the euclidean topology. It is shown that, in such monoids, the Green classes and the spaces of idempotents in the Green classes all have natural manifold structures. The interactions of these manifold structures and the semigroup structures in these monoids have been investigated. Relations between these manifolds and Grassmann manifolds have been established. A generalisation of a result on the dimension of the manifold of rank $k$ idempotents in the semigroup of linear endomorphisms over $\fldc$ has been …
Let X be a projective manifold. We prove that the Mabuchi Energy of X is bounded below on all degenerations in B (the space of Bergman metrics) if and only if it is bounded below uniformly on B.
We consider natural algebraic differential operations acting on geometric quantities over smooth manifolds. We introduce a method of study and classification of such operations, called IT-reduction. It reduces the study of natural operations to the study of polynomial maps between (vector) spaces of jets which are equivariant with respect to certain algebraic groups. Using the IT-reduction, we obtain short and conceptual proofs of some known results on the classification of certain natural operations (the Schouten theorem, etc) together with new results including the non-existence of a univers…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold with vanishing Riemann curvature. We prove that there exists a manifold $X'$, deformation equivalent to $X$, which is not an analytification of any projective variety, if and only if $H^0(X, Ω^2) \neq 0$. Using this, we recover a recent theorem of Catanese and Demleitner, which states that a rigid smooth quotient of a complex torus is always projective. We also produce many examples of non-algebraic flat Kähler manifolds with vanishing first Betti number.
In this paper we provide a family of algebraic space-like surfaces in the three dimensional anti de Sitter space that shows that this Lorentzian manifold admits algebraic maximal examples of any order. Then, we classify all the space-like order two algebraic maximal hypersurfaces in the anti de Sitter $N$-dimensional space. Finally, we provide two families of examples of Lorentzian order two algebraic zero mean curvature in the de Sitter space.
We lay down an elementary yet fundamental lemma concerning a finite algebraicness property of a smooth map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a smooth manifold. This gives us a starting point to build a synthetic (synonymously, $C^{\infty}$-algebraic) symplectic geometry and calibrated geometry that are both tailored to and guided by D-brane phenomena in string theory and along the line of our previous works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]).
We study almost Kaehler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the third curvature condition of Gray. We show that the study of manifolds within this class reduces to the study of a subclass having the property that the torsion of the first canonical Hermitian connection has the simplest possible algebraic form. This allows to understand the structure of the Kaehler nullity of an almost Kaehler manifold with parallel torsion.
In this paper, we prove that the $L^4$-norm of Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded along a Kähler-Ricci flow on any minimal algebraic manifold. As an application, we show that on any minimal algebraic manifold $M$ of general type and with dimension $n\le 3$, any solution of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow converges to the unique singular Kähler-Einstein metric on the canonical model of $M$ in the Cheeger-Gromov topology.
We show that compact complex manifolds of algebraic dimension zero bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type have infinite fundamental group. This generalizes the main Theorem in [DM] where the same result was proved for the special cases of holomorphic affine connections and holomorphic conformal structures.
Results on characterization of manifolds in terms of certain Lie algebras growing on them, especially Lie algebras of differential operators, are reviewed and extended. In particular, we prove that a smooth (real-analytic, Stein) manifold is characterized by the corresponding Lie algebra of linear differential operators, i.e. isomorphisms of such Lie algebras are induced by the appropriate class of diffeomorphisms of the underlaying manifolds.
Together with spaces of constant sectional curvature and products of a real line with a manifold of constant curvature, the socalled Egorov spaces and $\varepsilon$-spaces exhaust the class of $n$-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds admitting a group of isometries of dimension at least ${1/2} n(n-1)+1$, for almost all values of $n$ [Patrangenaru V., Geom. Dedicata 102 (2003), 25-33]. We shall prove that the curvature tensor of these spaces satisfy several interesting algebraic properties. In particular, we will show that Egorov spaces are Ivanov-Petrova manifolds, curvature-Ricci commuting (indee…
