This paper is concerned with the construction of special metrics on non-compact 4-manifolds which arise as resolutions of complex orbifold singularities. Our study is close in spirit to the construction of the hyperkaehler gravitational instantons, but we focus on a different class of singularities. We show that any resolution X of an isolated cyclic quotient singularity admits a complete scalar-flat Kaehler metric (which is hyperkaehler if and only if c_1(X)=0), and that if c_1(X)<0 then X also admits a complete (non-Kaehler) self-dual Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature. In particular, complete self-dual Einstein metrics are constructed on simply-connected non-compact 4-manifolds with arbitrary second Betti number.
Deformations of these self-dual Einstein metrics are also constructed: they come in families parameterized, roughly speaking, by free functions of one real variable.
All the metrics constructed here are toric (that is, the isometry group contains a 2-torus) and are essentially explicit. The key to the construction is the remarkable fact that toric self-dual Einstein metrics are given quite generally in terms of linear partial differential equations on the hyperbolic plane.
In this paper we characterize logarithmic surfaces which admit Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative scalar curvature and small edge singularities along a normal crossing divisor.
Einstein's equation is rewritten in an equivalent form, which remains valid at the singularities in some major cases. These cases include the Schwarzschild singularity, the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker Big Bang singularity, isotropic singularities, and a class of warped product singularities. This equation is constructed in terms of the Ricci part of the Riemann curvature (as the Kulkarni-Nomizu product between Einstein's equation and the metric tensor).
We review our study of Sasakian geometry as an agent for proving the existence of Einstein metrics on odd dimensional manifolds. Particular emphasis is given to the Sasakian structures occuring on links of isolated hypersurface singularities.
In this work we initiate the mathematical study of naked singularities for the Einstein vacuum equations in $3+1$ dimensions by constructing solutions which correspond to the exterior region of a naked singularity. A key element is our introduction of a new type of self-similarity for the Einstein vacuum equations. Connected to this is a new geometric twisting phenomenon which plays the leading role in singularity formation. Prior to this work, the only known examples of naked singularities were the solutions constructed by Christodoulou for the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field syst…
We solve for the SO(3)-invariant Kahler-Einstein metric on $\mathbb{P}^2$ with cone singularities along a smooth conic curve using numerical approach. The numerical results show the sharp range of angles ($(π/2,2π]$) for the solvability of equations, and the right limit metric space ($P(1,1,4)$). These results exactly match our theoretical conclusions.
In a previous work [I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Exterior Solution, arXiv:1912.08478] we constructed solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations in 3+1 dimensions which corresponded to the exterior region of a naked singularity. In this work we construct solutions which correspond to the interior region and show that the two solutions may be glued together to produce a naked singularity. Fundamental to our construction is the novel type of self-similarity for the Einstein vacuum equations that we introduced in our previous …
In this paper, we extend the existence and regularity theorems for Kähler-Einstein metrics having conic singularities along a simple normal crossing divisor to the case of normal crossing divisor, i.e. when components of the divisor are allowed to intersect themselves transversely.
We show that any toric Kähler cone with smooth compact cross-section admits a family of Calabi-Yau cone metrics with conical singularities along its toric divisors. The family is parametrized by the Reeb cone and the angles are given explicitly in terms of the Reeb vector field. The result is optimal, in the sense that any toric Calabi-Yau cone metric with conical singularities along the toric divisor (and smooth elsewhere) belongs to this family. We also provide examples and interpret our results in terms of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.
Let (X,D) be a klt pair. Assuming either K_X+D big or -(K_X+D) ample, and that the coefficients of D are greater than 1/2, we show that the Kähler-Einstein metric attached to (X,D) -whenever it exists- has cone singularities along D on the log-smooth locus of the pair intersected with the ample locus of K_X+D (in the negatively curved case).
We extend the framework of K-stability (Tian, Donaldson) to more general algebro-geometric setting, such as partial desingularisations of (fixed) singularities, (not necessarily flat) families over higher dimensional base and the classical birational geometry of surfaces. We also observe that "concavity" of the volume function implies decrease of the (generalised) Donaldson-Futaki invariants along the Minimal Model Program, in our generalised settings. Several related results on the connection with the MMP theory, some of which are new even in the original setting of families over curves, are …
Let X be a Kähler manifold and D be a R-divisor with simple normal crossing support and coefficients between 1/2 and 1. Assuming that K_X+D is ample, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a negatively curved Kahler-Einstein metric on X\D having mixed Poincaré and cone singularities according to the coefficients of D. As an application we prove a vanishing theorem for certain holomorphic tensor fields attached to the pair (X,D).
We describe two simple obstructions to the existence of Ricci-flat Kahler cone metrics on isolated Gorenstein singularities or, equivalently, to the existence of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on the links of these singularities. In particular, this also leads to new obstructions for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano orbifolds. We present several families of hypersurface singularities that are obstructed, including 3-fold and 4-fold singularities of ADE type that have been studied previously in the physics literature. We show that the AdS/CFT dual of one obstruction is that the R-charge of a gauge inva…
Let $(X, L)$ be a polarized Calabi Yau variety (or canonical polarized variety) with crepant singularity. Suppose $ω_{KE} \in c_1(L)$ (or $ω_{KE} \in c_1(K_X)$) is the unique Ricci flat current (or Kahler Einstein current with negative scalar curvature) with local bounded potential constructed in [18], we show that the local tangent at any point $p \in X$ of metric $ω_{KE}$ is unique
Let $(X, D)$ be a log smooth log canonical pair such that $K_X+D$ is ample. Extending a theorem of Guenancia and building on his techniques, we show that negatively curved Kähler-Einstein crossing edge metrics converge to Kähler-Einstein mixed cusp and edge metrics smoothly away from the divisor when some of the cone angles converge to $0$. We further show that near the divisor such normalized Kähler-Einstein crossing edge metrics converge to a mixed cylinder and edge metric in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff sense when some of the cone angles converge to $0$ at (possibly) different speeds.
We prove that there are just two types of isolated singularities of special Kähler metrics in real dimension two provided the associated holomorphic cubic form does not have essential singularities. We also construct examples of such metrics.
This is the second of a series of three papers which provide proofs of results announced in arXiv:1210.7494. In this paper we consider the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of metrics with cone singularities in the case when the limiting cone angle is less than 2π. We show that these are in a natrual way projective algebraic varieties. In the case when the limiting variety and the limiting divisor are smooth we show that the limiting metric also has standard cone singularities.
This article considers the existence and regularity of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kahler manifold $M$ with edge singularities with cone angle $2πβ$ along a smooth divisor $D$. We prove existence of such metrics with negative, zero and some positive cases for all cone angles $2πβ\leq 2π$. The results in the positive case parallel those in the smooth case. We also establish that solutions of this problem are polyhomogeneous, i.e., have a complete asymptotic expansion with smooth coefficients along $D$ for all $2πβ< 2π$.
We prove that desingularizations of non degenerate Poincaré-Einstein metrics with A1 singularities remain non degenerate. In principle this enables a recursive procedure to desingularize the other Fuchsian singularities. We illustrate this procedure by the A2 case.
An HCMU metric is a conformal metric which has a finite number of singularities on a compact Riemann surface and satisfies the equation of the extremal Kähler metric. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a kind of HCMU metrics which has both cusp singularities and conical singularities.
We study the question of existence of a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature metric on manifolds with the Sullivan-Baas singularities. The manifolds we consider are Spin and simply connected. We prove an analogue of the Gromov-Lawson Conjecture for such manifolds in the case of particular type of singularities. We give an affirmative answer when such manifolds with singularities accept a metric of positive scalar curvature in terms of the index of the Dirac operator valued in the corresponding "K-theories with singularities". The key ideas are based on the construction due to Stolz, …
A series of old and recent theoretical observations suggests that the quantization of gravity would be feasible, and some problems of Quantum Field Theory would go away if, somehow, the spacetime would undergo a dimensional reduction at high energy scales. But an identification of the deep mechanism causing this dimensional reduction would still be desirable. The main contribution of this article is to show that dimensional reduction effects are due to General Relativity at singularities, and do not need to be postulated ad-hoc. Recent advances in understanding the geometry of singularities do…
We proved the convergence of a sequence of 2 dimensional comapct Kahler-Einstein orbifolds with rational quotient singularities and with some uniform bounds on the volumes and on the Euler characteristics of our orbifods to a Kahler-Einstein 2-dimensional orbifold. Our limit orbifold can have worse singularities than the orbifolds in our sequence. We will also derive some estimates on the norms of the sections of plurianticanonical bundles of our orbifolds in the sequence that we are considering and our limit orbifold.
We construct and classify, in the case of two complex dimensions, the possible tangent cones at points of limit spaces of non-collapsed sequences of Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
In the category of metrics with conical singularities along a smooth divisor with angle in $(0, 2π)$, we show that locally defined weak solutions ($C^{1,1}-$solutions) to the Kähler-Einstein equations actually possess maximum regularity, which means the metrics are actually Hölder continuous in the singular polar coordinates. This shows the weak Kähler-Einstein metrics constructed by Guenancia-Paun \cite{GP}, and independently by Yao \cite{GT}, are all actually strong-conical Kähler-Einstein metrics. The key step is to establish a Liouville-type theorem for weak-conical Kähler-Ricci flat metri…
In this note we use the Calabi ansatz, in the context of metrics with conical singularities along a divisor, to produce regular Calabi-Yau cones and Kähler-Einstein metrics of negative Ricci with a cuspidal point. As an application, we describe singularities and cuspidal ends of the completions of the complex hyperbolic metrics on the moduli spaces of ordered configurations of points in the projective line introduced by Thurston and Deligne-Mostow.
The purpose of this note is to introduce a new method for proving the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on certain simply connected odd dimensional manifolds. We then apply this method to prove the existence of new Sasakian-Einstein metrics on $\scriptstyle{S^2\times S^3}$ and on $\scriptstyle{(S^2\times S^3)# (S^2\times S^3).}$ These give the first known examples of non-regular Sasakian-Einstein 5-manifolds. Our method involves describing the Sasakian-Einstein structures as links of certain isolated hypersurface singularities, and makes use of the recent work of Demailly and Kollár, AG/9…
The purpose of this paper is to prove the a priori estimates for constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics with conic singularities along normal crossing divisors. The zero order estimates are proved by a reformulated version of Alexandrov's maximum principle. The higher order estimates follow from Chen-Cheng's frame work, equipped with new techniques to handle the singularities. Finally, we extend these estimates to the twisted equations.
In General Relativity the metric can be recovered from the structure of the lightcones and a measure giving the volume element. Since the causal structure seems to be simpler than the Lorentzian manifold structure, this suggests that it is more fundamental. But there are cases when seemingly healthy causal structure and measure determine a singular metric. Here it is shown that this is not a bug, but a feature, because big-bang and black hole singularities are instances of this situation. But while the metric is special at singularities, being singular, the causal structure and the measure are…
We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.
We show that the anti-canonical volume of an $n$-dimensional Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety is bounded from above by certain invariants of the local singularities, namely $\mathrm{lct}^n\cdot\mathrm{mult}$ for ideals and the normalized volume function for real valuations. This refines a recent result by Fujita. As an application, we get sharp volume upper bounds for Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties with quotient singularities. Based on very recent results by Li and the author, we show that a Fano manifold is K-semistable if and only if a de Fernex-Ein-Mustaţă type inequality holds on …
By constructing an ODE through a kind of meromorphic 1-forms, we will give an explicit construction of a kind of conformal metrics of constant curvature on Riemann surfaces with singularities. As an application, we will classify constant curvature one metrics on $S^{2}$ with two conical singularities, which was first proved by Troyanov in \cite{Tr89} by using projective connection.
We study one parameter degenerations of complex projective manifolds by introducing certain type of Hodge metrics coming from the pluricanonical forms. We show that degenerations with at most canonical singularities are all in the finite distance boundary of moduli spaces. We also propose the converse to be true in the sense that finite distance degenerations admit birational models which have at most canonical singularities in the degenerate fiber. We verify this for curves and show that the Calabi-Yau case follows from the minimal model conjecture.
A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of a conformal metric on 2-sphere of constant curvature 1 and with three conical singularities of prescribed order is given.
We prove an existence theorem for Asymptotically Conical Ricci Flat Kahler metrics in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with cone singularities along a smooth complex curve. These metrics are expected to arise as blow up limits of non collapsed sequences of Kahler Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
We develop some foundations for the study of Kahler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities transverse to a divisor. The main goal is a treatment of the deformation of the cone angle.
We prove the existence of non-positively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities along a given simple normal crossing divisor on a compact Kähler manifold, under a technical condition on the cone angles, and we also discuss the case of positively-curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities. As an application we extend to this setting classical results of Lichnerowicz and Kobayashi on the parallelism and vanishing of appropriate holomorphic tensor fields.
The purpose of this paper is to establish a Nadel vanishing theorem for big line bundles with multiplier ideal sheaves of singular metrics admitting an analytic Zariski decomposition (such as, metrics with minimal singularities and Siu's metrics). For this purpose, we apply the theory of harmonic integrals and generalize Enoki's proof of Koll'ar's injectivity theorem. Moreover we investigate the asymptotic behavior of harmonic forms with respect to a family of regularized metrics.
We consider conformal metrics of constant curvature 1 on a Riemann surface, with finitely many prescribed conic singularities and prescribed angles at these singularities. Especially interesting case which was studied by C. L. Chai, C. S Lin and C. L. Wang is described in some detail, with simplified proofs.
In this paper, we consider a CscK metric defined away from divisor and with metric upper bound and lower bound going to zero in certain rate. And we'll prove that this "nicely" behaved metric is a smooth CscK metric across the divisor.
We construct Ricci flat Kahler metrics with cone singularities along a complex hypersurface. This construction is inspired in part by R. Mazzeo's program in the case of negative Einstein constant, and uses the linear theory developed recently by S. Donaldson.
A construction of Kaehler-Einstein metrics using Galois coverings, studied by Arezzo-Ghigi-Pirola, is generalized to orbifolds. By applying it to certain orbifold covers of P^n which are trivial set theoretically, one obtains new Einstein metrics on odd-dimensional spheres. The method also gives Kaehler-Einstein metrics on degree 2 Del Pezzo surfaces with A_1 or A_2-singularities.
We prove a removal of singularities result for Bach-flat metrics in dimension 4 under the assumption of bounded L^2 norm of curvature, bounded Sobolev constant and a volume growth bound. This result extends the removal of singularities result for special classes of Bach-flat metrics obtained in \cite{TVMOD}. For the proof we analyze the decay rates of solutions to the Bach-flat equation linearized around a flat metric. This classification is used to prove that Bach-flat cones are in fact ALE of order $τ$ for any $τ< 2$. This result is then used to prove the removal of singularities theorem.
We study the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics that have cone singularities along a divisor, with a particular focus on certain specific classes of such metrics that enjoy some curvature estimates. Our main result is that, on the projective completion of a pluricanonical bundle over a product of Kähler--Einstein Fano manifolds with the second Betti number 1, momentum-constructed constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics with cone singularities along the $\infty$-section exist if and only if the log Futaki invariant vanishes on the fibrewise $\mathbb{C}^*$-action, giving a supporting evidence t…
In this article we introduce a generalization of locally conformally Kaehler metrics from complex manifolds to complex analytic spaces with singularities and study which properties of locally conformally Kaehler manifolds still hold in this new setting. We prove that if a complex analytic space has only quotient singularities, then it admits a locally conformally Kaehler metric if and only if its universal cover admits a Kaehler metric such that the deck automorphisms act by homotheties of the Kaehler metric. We also prove that the blow-up at a point of a LCK complex space is also LCK.
Given a weighted line arrangement in the projective plane, with weights satisfying natural constraint conditions, we show the existence of a Ricci-flat Kähler metric with cone singularities along the lines asymptotic to a polyhedral Kähler cone at each multiple point. Moreover, we discuss a Chern-Weil formula that expresses the energy of the metric as a `logarithmic' Euler characteristic with points weighted according to the volume density of the metric.
In this article we give a criterion for the existence of a metric of curvature $1$ on a $2$-sphere with $n$ conical singularities of prescribed angles $2π\vartheta_1,\dots,2π\vartheta_n$ and non-coaxial holonomy. Such a necessary and sufficient condition is expressed in terms of linear inequalities in $\vartheta_1,\dots,\vartheta_n$.
We construct ALE Calabi-Yau metrics with cone singularities along the exceptional set of resolutions of $\mathbb{C}^n / Γ$ with non-positive discrepancies. In particular, this includes the case of the minimal resolution of two dimensional quotient singularities for any finite subgroup $Γ\subset U(2)$ acting freely on the three-sphere, hence generalizing Kronheimer's construction of smooth ALE gravitational instantons. Finally, we show how our results extend to the more general asymptotically conical setting.
We show that for given four points on the sphere and prescribed angles at these points, which are not multiples of $2π$, the number of metrics of curvature 1 having conic singularities with these angles at these points is finite.
