We establish stability properties of weak solutions for systems of porous medium type with respect to the exponent $m$. Thereby we treat stability for the local case as well as for Cauchy-Dirichlet problems. Both degenerate and singular cases are covered.
We show that signed weak solutions to parabolic obstacle problems with porous medium type structure are locally Hölder continuous, provided that the obstacle is Hölder continuous.
In this work, we prove a weak Harnack estimate for the weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation. The proof is based on a priori estimates for the supersolutions and measure theoretical arguments.
This work extends Perron's method for the porous medium equation in the slow diffusion case. The main result shows that nonnegative continuous boundary functions are resolutive in a general cylindrical domain.
We study existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions to a fractional nonlinear porous medium equation with a variable density, in one space dimension.
We demonstrate the equivalence between the two popular models of nonlinear diffusion, the porous medium equation and the p-Laplacian equation. The equivalence is shown at the level of selfsimilar solutions.
We derive several new gradient estimates of Aronson-B{é}nilan type for positive solutions of porous medium equation and fast diffusion equation on a complete manifold that satisfies the curvature dimension condition
In the slow diffusion case unbounded supersolutions of the porous medium equation are of two totally different types, depending on whether the pressure is locally integrable or not. This criterion and its consequences are discussed.
It is well-known that solutions for generalised porous medium equations are, in general, only Hölder continuous. In this note, we propose a new variable substitution for such equations which transforms weak solutions into classical.
In this paper, we present a surprising two-dimensional contraction family for porous medium and fast diffusion equations. This approach provides new a priori estimates on the solutions, even for the standard heat equation.
We consider the fractional porous medium flow introduced by Caffarelli-Vazquez and obtain local in time existence, uniqueness, and blow-up criterion for smooth solutions. The proof is based on establishing a commutator estimate involving fractional Laplacian operators.
A degenerate nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation is considered; it can be understood as a porous medium equation whose pressure law is nonlinear and nonlocal. We show the existence of sign changing weak solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. Moreover, we construct explicit compactly supported self-similar solutions which generalize Barenblatt profiles --- the well-known solutions of the classical porous medium equation.
This note is concerned with proving the finite speed of propagation for some non-local porous medium equation by adapting arguments developed by Caffarelli and Vázquez (2010).
Several one-parameter families of explicit self-similar solutions are constructed for the porous medium equations with fractional operators. The corresponding self-similar profiles, also called \emph{Barenblatt profiles}, have the same forms as those of the classic porous medium equations. These new exact solutions complement current theoretical analysis of the underlying equations and are expected to provide insights for further quantitative investigations.
We study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a fractional porous medium equation with a varying density. We establish existence of weak energy solutions; uniqueness and nonuniqueness is studied as well, according with the behavior of the density at infinity.
This paper is concerned with the self-improving property for obstacle problem related to the singular porous medium equation. We establish a local higher integrability result for the spatial gradient of the $m$-th power of nonnegative weak solutions, under some suitable regularity assumptions on the obstacle function.
The main objective of the present work is to discuss the global existence and stability of solutions to the porous medium equations on Riemannian manifolds with singularities. Several different types of solutions are considered. Our proof is based on a Poincare inequality on function space defined on manifolds with singularities.
In this paper, we will first prove a Liouville theorem to a torsion system. As an application, complete resolutions of symmetry group to the porous medium equation of Fujita type are obtained for symmetric spaces.
Weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation are defined by means of smooth test functions under an integral sign. We show that nonnegative weak supersolutions become lower semicontinuous after redefinition on a set of measure zero. This shows that weak supersolutions belong to a class of supersolutions defined by a comparison principle.
We study a quite general family of nonlinear evolution equations of diffusive type with nonlocal effects. More precisely, we study porous medium equations with a fractional Laplacian pressure, and the problem is posed on a bounded space domain. We prove existence of weak solutions and suitable a priori bounds and regularity estimates.
We study families of porous medium equation with nonlocal pressure. We construct their weak solutions via JKO schemes for modified Wasserstein distances. We also establish the regularization effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms.
The nonnegative solution for a linear degenerate diffusion transport eqution is proved. As a result, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution for the fractional porous medium equation in Sobolev spaces $H^α$ with nonnegative initial data, $α>\frac d2+1$. Besides, we correct a mistake in our previous paper \cite{zhou01}.
We study the flow generated by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid in a fractured porous medium. The model consists of a fluid flow governed by Stokes-Volterra equations evolving in a periodic double-porosity medium. Using the multiscale convergence method associated to some recent tools about the convergence of convolution sequences, we show that the equivalent macroscopic model is of the same type as the microscopic one, but in a fixed domain.
We consider a family of fractional porous media equations, recently studied by Caffarelli and Vázquez. We show the construction of a weak solution as Wasserstein gradient flow of a square fractional Sobolev norm. Energy dissipation inequality, regularizing effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms are established. Moreover, we show that a classical porous medium equation can be obtained as a limit case.
We consider a time-independent variable coefficients fractional porous medium equation and formulate an associated inverse problem. We determine both the conductivity and the absorption coefficient from exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Our approach relies on a time-integral transform technique as well as the unique continuation property of the fractional operator.
We study a porous medium equation, with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. We pose the problem in n-dimensional space for all t>0 with bounded and compactly supported initial data, and prove existence of a weak and bounded solution that propagates with finite speed, a property that is nor shared by other fractional diffusion models.
We study the interior Hölder regularity problem for weak solutions of the porous medium equation with external forces. Since the porous medium equation is the typical example of degenerate parabolic equations, Hölder regularity is a delicate matter and does not follow by classical methods. Caffrelli-Friedman, and Caffarelli-Vazquez-Wolansky showed Hölder regularity for the model equation without external forces. DiBenedetto and Friedman showed the Hölder continuity of weak solutions with some integrability conditions of the external forces but they did not obtain the quantitative estimates. Th…
We consider nonlinear nonlocal diffusive evolution equations, governed by fractional Laplace-type operators, fractional time derivative and involving porous medium type nonlinearities. Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions are established using approximating solutions and the theory of maximal monotone operators. Using the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser technique, we prove that the solutions are bounded and Hölder continuous for all positive time.
We consider a fractional porous medium equation that extends the classical porous medium and fractional heat equations. The flow is studied in the space of periodic probability measures endowed with a non-local transportation distance constructed in the spirit of the Benamou-Brenier formula. For initial periodic probability measures, we show the existence of absolutely continuous curves that are generalized minimizing movements associated to Rényi entropy. For that, we need to obtain entropy and distance properties and to develop a subdifferential calculus in our setting.
We consider a two-phase elliptic-parabolic moving boundary problem modelling an evaporation front in a porous medium. Our main result is a proof of short-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the corresponding nonlinear evolution problem in an $L_{p}$-setting. It relies critically on nonstandard optimal regularity results for a linear elliptic-parabolic system with dynamic boundary condition.
We investigate systems of degenerate parabolic equations idealizing reactive solute transport in porous media. Taking advantage of the inherent structure of the system that allows to deduce a scalar Generalized Porous Medium Equation for the sum of the solute concentrations, we show existence of a unique weak solution to the coupled system and derive regularity estimates. We also prove that the system supports solutions propagating with finite speed thus giving rise to free boundaries and interaction of compactly supported initial concentrations of different species.
The singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem is performed when the density (and possibly the viscosity) of the lighter fluid vanishes and the porous medium equation is identified as the limit problem. In particular, the height of the denser fluid is shown to converge towards the solution to the porous medium equation and an explicit rate for this convergence is provided in space dimension d $\le$ 4. Moreover, the limit of the height of the lighter fluid is determined in a certain regime and is given by the corresponding initial condition.
Regularity estimates in time and space for solutions to the porous medium equation are shown in the scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, higher spatial regularity for powers of the solutions is obtained. Scaling arguments indicate that these estimates are optimal. In the linear limit, the proven regularity estimates are consistent with the optimal regularity of the linear case.
We study a kind of generalized porous medium equation with fractional Laplacian and abstract pressure term. For a large class of equations corresponding to the form: $u_t+νΛ^βu=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla Pu)$, we get their local well-posedness in Fourier-Besov spaces for large initial data. If the initial data is small, then the solution becomes global. Furthermore, we prove a blowup criterion for the solutions.
In this paper we are interested with a strongly coupled system of partial differential equations that modelizes free convection in a two-dimensional bounded domain filled with a fluid saturated porous medium. This model is inspired by the one of free convection near a semi-infinite impermeable vertical flat plate embedded in a fluid saturated porous medium. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution for small data in some unusual spaces.
We deal with the obstacle problem for the porous medium equation in the slow diffusion regime $m>1$. Our main interest is to treat fairly irregular obstacles assuming only boundedness and lower semicontinuity. In particular, the considered obstacles are not regular enough to work with the classical notion of variational solutions, and a different approach is needed. We prove the existence of a solution in the sense of the minimal supersolution lying above the obstacle. As a consequence, we can show that non-negative weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation can be approximated by a seq…
Under a sharp asymptotic growth condition at infinity, we prove a Liouville type theorem for the inhomogeneous porous medium equation, provided it stays universally close to the heat equation. Additionally, for the homogeneous equation, we show that for the conclusion to hold, it is enough to assume the sharp asymptotic growth at infinity only in the space variable. The results are optimal, meaning that the growth condition at infinity cannot be weakened.
In this paper we investigate regularity aspects for solutions of the nonlinear parabolic equation $$ u_t= Δu^m, \quad m > 1 $$ usually called the porous medium equation. More precisely, we provide sharp regularity estimates for bounded nonnegative weak solutions along the free boundary $\partial\{u>0\}$, when the equation is universally close to the heat equation. As a consequence, local Lipschitz estimates are also established for this scenario.
We study regularity properties of the free boundary for solutions of the porous medium equation with the presence of drift. We show the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary, when the solution is directionally monotone in space variable in a local neighborhood. The main challenge lies in establishing a local non-degeneracy estimate (Theorem 1.3 and Proposition 1.5), which appears new even for the zero drift case.
We consider a coupled system consisting of a degenerate porous medium type of Keller-Segel system and Stokes system modeling the motion of swimming bacteria living in fluid and consuming oxygen. We establish the global existence of weak solutions and Hölder continuous solutions in dimension three, under the assumption that the power of degeneracy is above a certain number depending on given parameter values. To show Hölder continuity of weak solutions, we consider a single degenerate porous medium equation with lower order terms, and via a unified method of proof, we obtain Hölder regularity, …
We consider the porous medium equation (PME) on a locally finite graph and identify suitable curvature-dimension (CD) conditions under which a discrete version of the fundamental Aronson-Bénilan estimate holds true for positive solutions of the PME. We also show that these estimates allow to prove Harnack inequalities which are structurally similar to the continuous case. The new CD conditions are illustrated with several concrete examples, e.g.\ complete and chain-like graphs.
We study the free boundary of the porous medium equation with nonlocal drifts in dimension one. Under the assumption that the initial data has super-quadratic growth at the free boundary, we show that the solution is smooth in space and $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$ in time, and then the free boundary is $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$. Moreover if the drift is local, both the solution and the free boundary are smooth.
We perform asymptotic analysis for the Euler--Riesz system posed in either $\mathbb{T}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ in the high-force regime and establish a quantified relaxation limit result from the Euler--Riesz system to the fractional porous medium equation. We provide a unified approach for asymptotic analysis regardless of the presence of pressure, based on the modulated energy estimates, the Wasserstein distance of order $2$, and the bounded Lipschitz distance.
We consider a degenerate partial differential equation arising in population dynamics, namely the porous medium equation with a bistable reaction term. We study its asymptotic behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We prove the rapid formation of transition layers which then propagate. We prove the convergence to a sharp interface limit whose normal velocity, at each point, is that of the underlying degenerate travelling wave.
We show that the gradient of solutions to degenerate parabolic equations of porous medium-type satisfies a reverse Hölder inequality in suitable intrinsic cylinders. We modify the by-now classical Gehring lemma by introducing an intrinsic Calderón-Zygmund covering argument, and we are able to prove local higher integrability of the gradient of a proper power of the solution $u$.
Given $\Bbb R^2, $ with a ``good'' complete metric, we show that the unique solution of the Ricci flow approaches a soliton at time infinity. Solitons are solutions of the Ricci flow, which move only by diffeomorphism. The Ricci flow on $\Bbb R^2$ is the limiting case of the porous medium equation when $m$ is zero. The results in the Ricci flow may therefore be interpreted as sufficient conditions on the initial data, which guarantee that the corresponding unique solution for the porous medium equation on the entire plane asymptotically behaves like a ``soliton-solution''.
