We consider nonlinear nonlocal diffusive evolution equations, governed by fractional Laplace-type operators, fractional time derivative and involving porous medium type nonlinearities. Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions are established using approximating solutions and the theory of maximal monotone operators. Using the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser technique, we prove that the solutions are bounded and Hölder continuous for all positive time.
A degenerate nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation is considered; it can be understood as a porous medium equation whose pressure law is nonlinear and nonlocal. We show the existence of sign changing weak solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. Moreover, we construct explicit compactly supported self-similar solutions which generalize Barenblatt profiles --- the well-known solutions of the classical porous medium equation.
We study a generalization of the porous medium equation involving nonlocal terms. More precisely, explicit self-similar solutions with compact support generalizing the Barenblatt solutions are constructed. We also present a formal argument to get the $L^p$ decay of weak solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem.
We study a quite general family of nonlinear evolution equations of diffusive type with nonlocal effects. More precisely, we study porous medium equations with a fractional Laplacian pressure, and the problem is posed on a bounded space domain. We prove existence of weak solutions and suitable a priori bounds and regularity estimates.
We study families of porous medium equation with nonlocal pressure. We construct their weak solutions via JKO schemes for modified Wasserstein distances. We also establish the regularization effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms.
We study the free boundary of the porous medium equation with nonlocal drifts in dimension one. Under the assumption that the initial data has super-quadratic growth at the free boundary, we show that the solution is smooth in space and $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$ in time, and then the free boundary is $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$. Moreover if the drift is local, both the solution and the free boundary are smooth.
We study the flow generated by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid in a fractured porous medium. The model consists of a fluid flow governed by Stokes-Volterra equations evolving in a periodic double-porosity medium. Using the multiscale convergence method associated to some recent tools about the convergence of convolution sequences, we show that the equivalent macroscopic model is of the same type as the microscopic one, but in a fixed domain.
We study a nonlocal evolution equation that involves a pseudo-parabolic third-order term. The equation models almost uni-directional two-phase flow in Brinkman regimes. We prove the existence of weak solutions for this equation. We also give a series of numerical examples that demonstrate the ability of the equation to support overshooting and explore the behavior of solutions in various limit regimes.
This paper studies the derivation of the quadratic porous medium equation and a class of cross-diffusion systems from nonlocal interactions. We prove convergence of solutions of a nonlocal interaction equation, resp. system, to solutions of the quadratic porous medium equation, resp. cross-diffusion system, in the limit of a localising interaction kernel. The analysis is carried out at the level of the (nonlocal) partial differential equations and we use gradient flow techniques to derive bounds on energy, second order moments, and logarithmic entropy. The dissipation of the latter yields suff…
We consider the fractional porous medium flow introduced by Caffarelli-Vazquez and obtain local in time existence, uniqueness, and blow-up criterion for smooth solutions. The proof is based on establishing a commutator estimate involving fractional Laplacian operators.
We study existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions to a fractional nonlinear porous medium equation with a variable density, in one space dimension.
We study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a fractional porous medium equation with a varying density. We establish existence of weak energy solutions; uniqueness and nonuniqueness is studied as well, according with the behavior of the density at infinity.
We provide a rather complete description of the results obtained so far on the nonlinear diffusion equation $u_t=\nabla\cdot (u^{m-1}\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u)$, which describes a flow through a porous medium driven by a nonlocal pressure. We consider constant parameters $m>1$ and $0<s<1$, we assume that the solutions are non-negative, and the problem is posed in the whole space. We present a theory of existence of solutions, results on uniqueness, and relation to other models. As new results of this paper, we prove the existence of self-similar solutions in the range when $N=1$ and $m>2$, and the asy…
We consider a family of fractional porous media equations, recently studied by Caffarelli and Vázquez. We show the construction of a weak solution as Wasserstein gradient flow of a square fractional Sobolev norm. Energy dissipation inequality, regularizing effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms are established. Moreover, we show that a classical porous medium equation can be obtained as a limit case.
We consider a time-independent variable coefficients fractional porous medium equation and formulate an associated inverse problem. We determine both the conductivity and the absorption coefficient from exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Our approach relies on a time-integral transform technique as well as the unique continuation property of the fractional operator.
Several one-parameter families of explicit self-similar solutions are constructed for the porous medium equations with fractional operators. The corresponding self-similar profiles, also called \emph{Barenblatt profiles}, have the same forms as those of the classic porous medium equations. These new exact solutions complement current theoretical analysis of the underlying equations and are expected to provide insights for further quantitative investigations.
We study a porous medium equation, with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. We pose the problem in n-dimensional space for all t>0 with bounded and compactly supported initial data, and prove existence of a weak and bounded solution that propagates with finite speed, a property that is nor shared by other fractional diffusion models.
In this paper, we study a nonlocal degenerate parabolic equation of order α + 2 for 0<α<2. The equation is a generalization of the one arising in the modeling of hydraulic fractures studied by Imbert and Mellet in 2011. Using the same approach, we prove the existence of solutions for this equation for 0<α<2 and for nonnegative initial data satisfying appropriate assumptions. The main difference is the compactness results due to different Sobolev embeddings. Furthermore, for α > 1, we construct a nonnegative solution for nonnegative initial data under weaker assumptions.
The nonnegative solution for a linear degenerate diffusion transport eqution is proved. As a result, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution for the fractional porous medium equation in Sobolev spaces $H^α$ with nonnegative initial data, $α>\frac d2+1$. Besides, we correct a mistake in our previous paper \cite{zhou01}.
We consider a fractional porous medium equation that extends the classical porous medium and fractional heat equations. The flow is studied in the space of periodic probability measures endowed with a non-local transportation distance constructed in the spirit of the Benamou-Brenier formula. For initial periodic probability measures, we show the existence of absolutely continuous curves that are generalized minimizing movements associated to Rényi entropy. For that, we need to obtain entropy and distance properties and to develop a subdifferential calculus in our setting.
We are concerned with the long time behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with a variable spatial density. We prove that if the density decays slowly at infinity, then the solution approaches the Barenblatt-type solution of a proper singular fractional problem. If, on the contrary, the density decays rapidly at infinity, we show that the minimal solution multiplied by a suitable power of the time variable converges to the minimal solution of a certain fractional sublinear elliptic equation.
We perform asymptotic analysis for the Euler--Riesz system posed in either $\mathbb{T}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ in the high-force regime and establish a quantified relaxation limit result from the Euler--Riesz system to the fractional porous medium equation. We provide a unified approach for asymptotic analysis regardless of the presence of pressure, based on the modulated energy estimates, the Wasserstein distance of order $2$, and the bounded Lipschitz distance.
We study a porous medium equation with right hand side. The operator has nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. The derivative in time is also fractional of Caputo-type and which takes into account "memory''. The precise model is \[ D_t^α u - \text{div}(u(-Δ)^{-σ} u) = f, \quad 0<σ<1/2. \] We pose the problem over $\{t\in {\mathbb R}^+, x\in {\mathbb R}^n\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(0,x)\geq 0 $ as well as right hand side $f\geq 0$. We first prove existence for weak solutions when $f,u(0,x)$ have exponential decay at infinity. Our main result is H…
We prove existence and Sobolev regularity of solutions of a nonlinear system of degenerate-parabolic PDEs with self- and cross-diffusion, transport/confinement and nonlocal interaction terms. The macroscopic system of PDEs is formally derived from a large particle system and models the evolution of an arbitrary number of species with quadratic porous-medium interactions in a bounded domain $Ω$ in any spatial dimension. The cross interactions between different species are scaled by a parameter $δ<1$, with the $δ= 0$ case corresponding to no interactions across species. A smallness condition on …
Following the methodology of [Brasco and Volzone, Adv. Math. 2022], we study the long-time behavior for the signed Fractional Porous Medium Equation in open bounded sets with smooth boundary. Homogeneous exterior Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. We prove that if the initial datum has sufficiently small energy, then the solution, once suitably rescaled, converges to a nontrivial constant sign solution of a sublinear fractional Lane-Emden equation. Furthermore, we give a nonlocal sufficient energetic criterion on the initial datum, which is important to identify the exact limit prof…
We develop a theory of existence, uniqueness and regularity for a porous medium equation with fractional diffusion, $\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + (-Δ)^{1/2} (|u|^{m-1}u)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $m>m_*=(N-1)/N$, $N\ge1$ and $f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. An $L^1$-contraction semigroup is constructed and the continuous dependence on data and exponent is established. Nonnegative solutions are proved to be continuous and strictly positive for all $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$, $t>0$.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of fundamental solutions for the fractional porous medium equation introduced in \cite{PQRV1}. They are self-similar functions of the form $u(x,t)= t^{-α} f(|x|\,t^{-β})$ with suitable $α$ and $β$. As a main application of this construction, we prove that the asymptotic behaviour of general solutions is represented by such special solutions. Among other interesting qualitative properties of the equation we prove an Aleksandrov reflection principle.
In this paper, we study transport equations with nonlocal velocity fields with rough initial data. We address the global existence of weak solutions of an one dimensional model of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation and the incompressible porous media equation, and one dimensional and $n$ dimensional models of the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations and the dissipative incompressible porous media equation.
In this work we prove that the time-fractional porous medium equation on the half-line with Dirichlet boundary condition has a unique compactly supported solution. The approach we make is based on a transformation of the fractional integro-differential equation into a nonlinear Volterra integral equation. Then, the shooting method is applied in order to facilitate the analysis of the free-boundary problem. We further show that there exists an exactly one choice of initial conditions for which the solution has a zero which guarantees the no-flux condition. Then, our previous considerations impl…
We consider a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. In a previous paper we have found mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions of the equation satisfying energy estimates. The equation is posed in the whole space R^n. Here we establish the large-time behaviour. We first find selfsimilar nonnegative solutions by solving an elliptic obstacle problem with fractional Laplacian for the pair pressure-density, which we call obstacle Barenblatt solutions. The theory for elliptic fractional problems with obstacles has been recently …
We introduce a fractional variant of the Cahn-Hilliard equation settled in a bounded domain $Ω$ of $R^N$ and complemented with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions of solid type (i.e., imposed in the entire complement of $Ω$). After setting a proper functional framework, we prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the related initial-boundary value problem. Then, we investigate some significant singular limits obtained as the order of either of the fractional Laplacians appearing in the equation is let tend to 0. In particular, we can rigorously prove that the fractional Allen-…
We study a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. More precisely, $$ u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u), \quad \ 0<s<1. $$ The problem is posed in $\{x\in\ren, t\in \re\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$ that are integrable and decay at infinity. A previous paper has established the existence of mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions satisfying energy estimates and finite propagation. Here we establish the boundedness and $C^α$ regularity of such weak solutions
We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the one dimensional fractional version of the porous medium equation introduced by Caffarelli and Vázquez, where the pressure is obtained as a Riesz potential associated to the density. We take advantage of the displacement convexity of the Riesz potential in one dimension to show a functional inequality involving the entropy, entropy dissipation, and the Euclidean transport distance. An argument by approximation shows that this functional inequality is enough to deduce the exponential convergence of solutions in self-similar variables to the…
In this manuscript we consider a non-local porous medium equation with non-local diffusion effects given by a fractional heat operator \begin{equation*} \partial_t u = \mbox{div}(u\nabla p),\qquad \partial_t p = -(-Δ)^s p + u^2, \end{equation*} in three space dimensions for $3/4\le s < 1$ and analyze the long time asymptotics. The proof is based on energy methods and leads to algebraic decay towards the stationary solution $u=0$ and $\nabla p=0$ in the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$-norm. The decay rate depends on the exponent $s$. We also show weak-strong uniqueness of solutions and continuous dependenc…
We study a porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure: $$ \partial_t u= \nabla \cdot (u^{m-1} \nabla p), \quad p=(-Δ)^{-s}u, $$ for $m>1$, $0<s<1$ and $u(x,t)\ge 0$. The problem is posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, and $t>0$. The initial data $u(x,0)$ is assumed to be a bounded function with compact support or fast decay at infinity. We establish existence of a class of weak solutions for which we determine whether the property of compact support is conserved in time depending on the parameter $m$, starting from the result of finite propagation known for $m=2$. We find t…
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of porous media equations driven by the fractional Laplacian when the initial data are positive finite Radon measures on the Euclidean space. For given solutions without a prescribed initial condition, the problem of existence and uniqueness of the initial trace is also addressed. By the same methods we can also treat weighted fractional porous media equations, with a weight that can be singular at the origin, and must have a sufficiently slow decay at infinity (power-like). In particular, we show that the Barenblatt-type solutions exis…
In this paper we prove existence of entropy solutions to the time-fractional porous medium type equation, $$\partial_t[k\ast(u-u_0)]-\operatorname{div} (A(t,x)\nablaφ(u))=f\text{ in }Q_T=(0,T)\timesΩ,$$ with Dirichlet boundary condition, initial condition $u(0,\cdot)=u_0$ in $Ω$, and $L^1$-data $f\in L^1((0,T)\timesΩ), u_0\in L^1(Ω)$. To this end we approximate the data by $L^\infty$-functions, use a known existence result of weak solutions for these more regular data, and additionally a known contraction principle for weak solutions, which can be adopted to the entropy solutions.
We present a theory of well-posedness and a priori estimates for bounded distributional (or very weak) solutions of $$\partial_tu-\mathfrak{L}^{σ,μ}[φ(u)]=g(x,t)\quad\quad\text{in}\quad\quad \mathbb{R}^N\times(0,T),$$ where $φ$ is merely continuous and nondecreasing and $\mathfrak{L}^{σ,μ}$ is the generator of a general symmetric Lévy process. This means that $\mathfrak{L}^{σ,μ}$ can have both local and nonlocal parts like e.g. $\mathfrak{L}^{σ,μ}=Δ-(-Δ)^{\frac12}$. New uniqueness results for bounded distributional solutions of this problem and the corresponding elliptic equation are presented…
We investigate the behaviour of the solutions $u_m(x,t)$ of the fractional porous medium equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^s (u^m)=0, \quad x\in {\mathbb{R}}^N, \ t>0. $$ with initial data $u(x,0)\ge 0$, $x\in {\mathbb{R}}^N$, in the limit as $m\to\infty$ with fixed $s\in (0,1)$. We first identify the limit of the Barenblatt solutions as the solution of a fractional obstacle problem, and we observe that, contrary to the case $s=1$, the limit is not compactly supported but exhibits a typical fractional tail with power-like decay. In other words, we do not get a plain mesa in the limit, but a mesa with tails…
We consider nonlinear diffusive evolution equations posed on bounded space domains, governed by fractional Laplace-type operators, and involving porous medium type nonlinearities. We establish existence and uniqueness results in a suitable class of solutions using the theory of maximal monotone operators on dual spaces. Then we describe the long-time asymptotics in terms of separate-variables solutions of the friendly giant type. As a by-product, we obtain an existence and uniqueness result for semilinear elliptic non local equations with sub-linear nonlinearities. The Appendix contains a revi…
We consider four different models of nonlinear diffusion equations involving fractional Laplacians and study the existence and properties of classes of self-similar solutions. Such solutions are an important tool in developing the general theory. We introduce a number of transformations that allow us to map complete classes of solutions of one equation into those of another one, thus providing us with a number of new solutions, as well as interesting connections. Special attention is paid to the property of finite propagation.
We investigate the existence, uniqueness, and $L^1$-contractivity of weak solutions to a porous medium equation with fractional diffusion on an evolving hypersurface. To settle the existence, we reformulate the equation as a local problem on a semi-infinite cylinder, regularise the porous medium nonlinearity and truncate the cylinder. Then we pass to the limit first in the truncation parameter and then in the nonlinearity, and the identification of limits is done using the theory of subdifferentials of convex functionals. In order to facilitate all of this, we begin by studying (in the setting…
In this paper, we developed the group analysis to the time Fractional Porous Medium Equation (FPME) and the time Fractional Dual Porous Medium Equation (FDPME). The symmetry groups and the corresponding optimal systems of these two equations are obtained. Based on the above results, similarity reductions are performed and some explicit group invariant solutions are constructed.
We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analys…
Boundary value problems for nonlocal fractional elliptic equations with parameter in Banach spaces are studied. Uniform $L_p$-separability properties and sharp resolvent estimates are obtained for elliptic equations in terms of fractional derivatives. Particularly, it is proven that the fractional ellipitic operator generated by these equations is sectorial and also is a generator of an analytic semigroup. Moreover, maximal regularity properties of nonlocal fractional abstract parabolic equation are established. As an application, the nonlocal anisotropic fractional differential equations and …
In this paper we study the heat transfer with a general fractional diffusion term of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium governed by Darcy's law. We show formation of singularities with infinite energy and for finite energy we obtain existence and uniqueness results of strong solutions for the sub-critical and critical cases. We prove global existence of weak solutions for different cases. Moreover, we obtain the decay of the solution in $L^p$, for any $p\geq2$, and the asymptotic behavior is shown. Finally, we prove the existence of an attractor in a weak sense and, for the sub-critica…
We study the general nonlinear diffusion equation $u_t=\nabla\cdot (u^{m-1}\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u)$ that describes a flow through a porous medium which is driven by a nonlocal pressure. We consider constant parameters $m>1$ and $0<s<1$, we assume that the solutions are non-negative and the problem is posed in the whole space. In this paper we prove existence of weak solutions for all integrable initial data $u_0 \ge 0$ and for all exponents $m>1$ by developing a new approximation method that allows to treat the range $m\ge 3$ that could not be covered by previous works. We also extend the class of …
We study generalized fractional $p$-Laplacian equations to prove local boundedness and Hölder continuity of weak solutions to such nonlocal problems by finding a suitable fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inquality.
