In this paper we are interested with a strongly coupled system of partial differential equations that modelizes free convection in a two-dimensional bounded domain filled with a fluid saturated porous medium. This model is inspired by the one of free convection near a semi-infinite impermeable vertical flat plate embedded in a fluid saturated porous medium. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution for small data in some unusual spaces.
The present work is aimed to find suitable exchange conditions for saturated fluid flow in a porous medium, when a fractal microstructure is embedded in the porous matrix. Two different deterministic models are introduced and rigorously analyzed. Also, numerical experiments for each of them are presented to verify the theoretically predicted behavior of the phenomenon and some probabilistic versions are explored numerically, to gain further insight on the phenomenon.
We consider three-dimensional (3D) Boussinesq convection system of an incompressible fluid in a closed sample of a porous medium. Specifically, we introduce and analyze a 3D Brinkman-Forchheimer-Bénard convection problem describing the behavior of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium between two plates heated from the bottom and cooled from the top. We show the existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions, and the existence of absorbing balls in $L^2$ and $H^1$. Eventually, we comment on the applicability of a data assimilation algorithm to our system.
This paper deals with the analysis of qualitative properties involved in the dynamics of Keller-Segel type systems in which the diffusion mechanisms of the cells are driven by porous-media flux-saturated phenomena. We study the regularization inside the support of a solution with jump discontinuity at the boundary of the support. We analyze the behavior of the size of the support and blow--up of the solution, and the possible convergence in finite time towards a Dirac mass in terms of the three constants of the system: the mass, the flux--saturated characteristic speed, and the chemoattractant…
In this contribution we prove the existence of weak solutions to degenerate parabolic systems arising from the coupled moisture movement, transport of dissolved species and heat transfer through partially saturated porous materials. Physically motivated mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions are considered. Existence of a global weak solution of the problem is proved by means of semidiscretization in time and by passing to the limit from discrete approximations. Degeneration occurs in the nonlinear transport coefficients which are not assumed to be bounded below and…
This paper is concerned with theoretical analysis of a heat and moisture transfer model arising from textile industries, which is described by a degenerate and strongly coupled parabolic system. We prove the global (in time) existence of weak solution by constructing an approximate solution with some standard smoothing. The proof is based on the physcial nature of gas convection, in which the heat (energy) flux in convection is determined by the mass (vapor) flux in convection.
A bidisperse porous medium is one with two porosity scales. There are the usual pores known as macro pores but also cracks or fissures in the skeleton which give rise to micro pores. In this article we develop and analyse a model for thermal convection where a layer of viscous incompressible fluid overlies a layer of bidisperse porous medium. Care has to be taken with the boundary conditions at the interface of the fluid and the porous material and this aspect is investigated. The situation is one in a layer which is heated from below and under appropriate conditions bimodal neutral curves are…
This dissertation resolves a longstanding discussion of a mathematical problem important in contaminant hydrogeology and chemical-reaction engineering, the proper mathematical description for a miscible solute undergoing longitudinal convective-dispersive transport with production, decay, and sorption in a porous medium. Initial and input concentrations may be any continuously differentiable functions and the problem is stated for a finite domain. This domain yields a mass balance which requires Robin (i.e., third-type) boundaries, which describe a continuous flux but a discontinuous resident-…
For a fully-coupled Darcy-Stokes system describing the exchange of fluid and stress balance across the interface between a saturated porous medium and an open very narrow channel, the limiting problem is characterized as the width of the channel converges to zero. It is proven that the limit problem is a fully-coupled system of Darcy flow in the porous medium with Brinkman flow in tangential coordinates of the lower dimensional interface.
In this paper we propose a continuous data assimilation (downscaling) algorithm for the Bénard convection in porous media using only coarse mesh measurements of the temperature. In this algorithm, we incorporate the observables as a feedback (nudging) term in the evolution equation of the temperature. We show that under an appropriate choice of the nudging parameter and the size of the mesh, and under the assumption that the observed data is error free, the solution of the proposed algorithm converges at an exponential rate, asymptotically in time, to the unique exact unknown reference solutio…
We consider the homogenization of a model of reactive flows through periodic porous media involving a single solute which can be absorbed and desorbed on the pore boundaries. This is a system of two convection-diffusion equations, one in the bulk and one on the pore boundaries, coupled by an exchange reaction term. The novelty of our work is to consider a nonlinear reaction term, a so-called Langmuir isotherm, in an asymptotic regime of strong convection. We therefore generalize previous works on a similar linear model [G. Allaire et al, Chemical Engineering Science, 65 (2010), pp.2292-2300], …
A model of saturated hyperelastic porous solids at large strains is formulated and analysed. The material response is assumed to be of a viscoelastic Kelvin-Voigt type and inertial effects are considered, too. The flow of the diffusant is driven by the gradient of the chemical potential and is coupled to the mechanics via the occurrence of swelling and squeezing. Buoyancy effects due to the evolving mass density in a gravity field are covered. Higher-order viscosity is also included, allowing for physically relevant stored energies and local invertibility of the deformation. The whole system i…
In the article, we aim to investigate the well-posedness of solution and the regularity of the global attractor for the couple stress fluid in saturated porous media with the local thermal non-equilibrium effect. To be more specific, we firstly show the existence and uniqueness of global weak solution to the model by making use of the standard Galerkin method. Second, relying on verifying the uniformly compact condition required, we prove the existence of the global attractor of the model in the space where the weak solution resides. Finally, we improve the regularity of global attractor by un…
