In this paper we investigate regularity aspects for solutions of the nonlinear parabolic equation $$ u_t= Δu^m, \quad m > 1 $$ usually called the porous medium equation. More precisely, we provide sharp regularity estimates for bounded nonnegative weak solutions along the free boundary $\partial\{u>0\}$, when the equation is universally close to the heat equation. As a consequence, local Lipschitz estimates are also established for this scenario.
We show that signed weak solutions to parabolic obstacle problems with porous medium type structure are locally Hölder continuous, provided that the obstacle is Hölder continuous.
Regularity estimates in time and space for solutions to the porous medium equation are shown in the scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, higher spatial regularity for powers of the solutions is obtained. Scaling arguments indicate that these estimates are optimal. In the linear limit, the proven regularity estimates are consistent with the optimal regularity of the linear case.
In this paper we study the existence and partial regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system that models the single-phase miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another in a porous media. The system is singular and involves quadratic nonlinearity. A partial regularity result is obtained via the Fefferman-Stein inequality.
We present a Krylov-Safonov theory approach for the Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions to non-variational porous media type equations. We explore the peculiarity of this type of problem: either the equation falls in a uniformly elliptic regime or the eikonal mechanism takes care of the regularity. Our techniques are based on sliding paraboloids resulting in an ABP-type measure estimate. By combining such estimates, a diminishing of oscillation property is available, resulting in a regularity control in Hölder spaces.
We study regularity properties of the free boundary for solutions of the porous medium equation with the presence of drift. We show the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary, when the solution is directionally monotone in space variable in a local neighborhood. The main challenge lies in establishing a local non-degeneracy estimate (Theorem 1.3 and Proposition 1.5), which appears new even for the zero drift case.
In this paper we consider the incompressible porous media equation in the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^2), s > 2$. We prove that for $T > 0$ the time $T$ solution map $ρ_0 \mapsto ρ(T)$ is nowhere locally uniformly continuous. On the other hand we show that the particle trajectories are analytic curves in $\R^2$.
We study the relations between different regularity assumptions in the definition of weak solutions and supersolutions to the porous medium equation. In particular, we establish the equivalence of the conditions $u^m \in L^2_{\rm loc}(0,T;H^1_{\rm loc}(Ω))$ and $u^\frac{m+1}2 \in L^2_{\rm loc}(0,T;H^1_{\rm loc}(Ω))$ in the definition of weak solutions. Our proof is based on approximation by solutions to obstacle problems.
We consider the porous medium equation on manifolds with conical singularities and show existence, uniqueness and maximal $L^{p}$-regularity of a short time solution. In particular, we obtain information on the short time asymptotics of the solution near the conical point. Our method is based on bounded imaginary powers results for cone differential operators on Mellin-Sobolev spaces and $R$-sectoriality perturbation techniques.
In the present work we establish sharp regularity estimates for the solutions of the porous medium equation, along their zero level-sets. We work under a proximity regime on the exponent governing the nonlinearity of the problem. Then, we prove that solutions are locally of class $\mathcal{C}^{1-,\frac{1}{2}-}$ along free boundary points $x_0\in \partial\left\lbrace u>0\right\rbrace$, both in time and space. Our argument consists of importing information from the heat equation, through approximation and localization methods.
We study the free boundary of the porous medium equation with nonlocal drifts in dimension one. Under the assumption that the initial data has super-quadratic growth at the free boundary, we show that the solution is smooth in space and $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$ in time, and then the free boundary is $C^{2,1}_{\loc}$. Moreover if the drift is local, both the solution and the free boundary are smooth.
We study a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. More precisely, $$ u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u), \quad \ 0<s<1. $$ The problem is posed in $\{x\in\ren, t\in \re\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$ that are integrable and decay at infinity. A previous paper has established the existence of mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions satisfying energy estimates and finite propagation. Here we establish the boundedness and $C^α$ regularity of such weak solutions
We prove optimal regularity for solutions to porous media equations in Sobolev spaces, based on velocity averaging techniques. In particular, the obtained regularity is consistent with the optimal regularity in the linear limit.
We show that locally bounded solutions of the inhomogeneous porous medium equation $$u_{t} - {\rm div} \left( m |u|^{m-1} \nabla u \right) = f \in L^{q,r}, \quad m >1 ,$$ are locally Hölder continuous, with exponent $$γ=\min \left\{ \frac{α_{0}^-}{m}, \frac{[(2q - n)r -2q]}{q[(mr - (m-1)]} \right\},$$ where $α_{0}$ denotes the optimal Hölder exponent for solutions of the homogeneous case. The proof relies on an approximation lemma and geometric iteration in the appropriate intrinsic scaling.
We prove the optimal global regularity of nonnegative solutions to the porous medium equation in smooth bounded domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition after certain waiting time $T^*$. More precisely, we show that solutions are $C^{2,α}(\overlineΩ)$ in space, with $α=\frac1m$, and $C^\infty$ in time (uniformly in $x\in \overlineΩ$), for $t>T^*$. Furthermore, this allows us to refine the asymptotics of solutions for large times, improving the best known results so far in two ways: we establish a faster rate of convergence $O(t^{-1-γ})$, and we prove that the convergence holds in the…
Let $u$ be a nonnegative, local, weak solution to the porous medium equation for $m\ge2$ in a space-time cylinder $Ω_T$. Fix a point $(x_o,t_o)\inΩ_T$: if the average \[ a{\buildrel\mbox{def}\over{=}}\frac1{|B_r(x_o)|}\int_{B_r(x_o)}u(x,t_o)\,dx>0, \] then the quantity $|\nabla u^{m-1}|$ is locally bounded in a proper cylinder, whose center lies at time $t_o+a^{1-m}r^2$. This implies that in the same cylinder the solution $u$ is Hölder continuous with exponent $α=\frac1{m-1}$, which is known to be optimal. Moreover, $u$ presents a sort of instantaneous regularisation, which we quantify.
We study the boundary regularity of solutions to the porous medium equation $u_t = Δu^m$ in the degenerate range $m>1$. In particular, we show that in cylinders the Dirichlet problem with positive continuous boundary data on the parabolic boundary has a solution which attains the boundary values, provided that the spatial domain satisfies the elliptic Wiener criterion. This condition is known to be optimal, and it is a consequence of our main theorem which establishes a barrier characterization of regular boundary points for general -- not necessarily cylindrical -- domains in ${\bf R}^{n+1}$.…
We prove existence and Sobolev regularity of solutions of a nonlinear system of degenerate-parabolic PDEs with self- and cross-diffusion, transport/confinement and nonlocal interaction terms. The macroscopic system of PDEs is formally derived from a large particle system and models the evolution of an arbitrary number of species with quadratic porous-medium interactions in a bounded domain $Ω$ in any spatial dimension. The cross interactions between different species are scaled by a parameter $δ<1$, with the $δ= 0$ case corresponding to no interactions across species. A smallness condition on …
We study the interior Hölder regularity problem for weak solutions of the porous medium equation with external forces. Since the porous medium equation is the typical example of degenerate parabolic equations, Hölder regularity is a delicate matter and does not follow by classical methods. Caffrelli-Friedman, and Caffarelli-Vazquez-Wolansky showed Hölder regularity for the model equation without external forces. DiBenedetto and Friedman showed the Hölder continuity of weak solutions with some integrability conditions of the external forces but they did not obtain the quantitative estimates. Th…
We study the regularity of a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. The precise model is $u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-1/2}u).$ For definiteness, the problem is posed in $\{x\in\mathbb{R}^N, t\in \mathbb{R}\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$ that are integrable and decay at infinity. Previous papers have established the existence of mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions satisfying energy estimates and finite propagation, as well as the boundedness of nonnegative solutions with $L^1$ data, for the more general fam…
We study the positivity and regularity of solutions to the fractional porous medium equations $u_t+(-Δ)^su^m=0$ in $(0,\infty)\timesΩ$, for $m>1$ and $s\in (0,1)$ and with Dirichlet boundary data $u=0$ in $(0,\infty)\times({\mathbb R}^N\setminusΩ)$, and nonnegative initial condition $u(0,\cdot)=u_0\geq0$. Our first result is a quantitative lower bound for solutions which holds for all positive times $t>0$. As a consequence, we find a global Harnack principle stating that for any $t>0$ solutions are comparable to $d^{s/m}$, where $d$ is the distance to $\partialΩ$. This is in sharp contrast wit…
This article is concerned with a porous medium equation whose pressure law is both nonlinear and nonlocal, namely $\partial_t u = { \nabla \cdot} \left(u \nabla(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}-1}u^{m-1} \right)$ where $u:\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}_+$, for $0<α<2$ and $m\geq2$. We prove that the $L^1\cap L^\infty$ weak solutions constructed by Biler, Imbert and Karch (2015) are locally H{ö}lder-continuous in time and space. In this article, the classical parabolic De Giorgi techniques for the regularity of PDEs are tailored to fit this particular variant of the PME equation. In the spirit of…
In this paper we consider the problem $$(P)\qquad \{{array}{rclll} u_t-\D u^m&=&|\n u|^q +\,f(x,t),&\quad u\ge 0 \hbox{in} Ω_T\equiv Ω\times (0,T), u(x,t)&=&0 &\quad \hbox{on} \partialΩ\times (0,T) u(x,0)&=&u_0(x),&\quad x\in Ω{array}. $$ where $Ø\subset \ren$, $N\ge 2$, is a bounded regular domain, $1<q\le 2$, and $f\ge 0$, $u_0\ge 0$ are in a suitable class of functions. We obtain some results for elliptic-parabolic problems with measure data related to problem $(P)$ that we use to study the existence of solutions to problem $(P)$ according with the values of the parameters $q$ and $m$.
We study the porous medium equation on manifolds with conical singularities. Given strictly positive initial values, we show that the solution exists in the maximal $L^{q}$-regularity space for all times and is instantaneously smooth in space and time, where the maximal $L^{q}$-regularity is obtained in the sense of Mellin-Sobolev spaces. Moreover, we obtain precise information concerning the asymptotic behavior of the solution close to the singularity. Finally, we show the existence of generalized solutions for non-negative initial data.
In the article, we aim to investigate the well-posedness of solution and the regularity of the global attractor for the couple stress fluid in saturated porous media with the local thermal non-equilibrium effect. To be more specific, we firstly show the existence and uniqueness of global weak solution to the model by making use of the standard Galerkin method. Second, relying on verifying the uniformly compact condition required, we prove the existence of the global attractor of the model in the space where the weak solution resides. Finally, we improve the regularity of global attractor by un…
This paper is concerned with theoretical analysis of a heat and moisture transfer model arising from textile industries, which is described by a degenerate and strongly coupled parabolic system. We prove the global (in time) existence of weak solution by constructing an approximate solution with some standard smoothing. The proof is based on the physcial nature of gas convection, in which the heat (energy) flux in convection is determined by the mass (vapor) flux in convection.
We prove optimal regularity estimates in Sobolev spaces in time and space for solutions to stochastic porous medium equations. The noise term considered here is multiplicative, white in time and coloured in space. The coefficients are assumed to be Hölder continuous and the cases of smooth coefficients of at most linear growth as well as $\sqrt{u}$ are covered by our assumptions. The regularity obtained is consistent with the optimal regularity derived for the deterministic porous medium equation in [Gess 2020] and [Gess, Sauer, Tadmor 2020] and the presence of the temporal white noise. The pr…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of fundamental solutions for the fractional porous medium equation introduced in \cite{PQRV1}. They are self-similar functions of the form $u(x,t)= t^{-α} f(|x|\,t^{-β})$ with suitable $α$ and $β$. As a main application of this construction, we prove that the asymptotic behaviour of general solutions is represented by such special solutions. Among other interesting qualitative properties of the equation we prove an Aleksandrov reflection principle.
This paper is concerned with the self-improving property for obstacle problem related to the singular porous medium equation. We establish a local higher integrability result for the spatial gradient of the $m$-th power of nonnegative weak solutions, under some suitable regularity assumptions on the obstacle function.
In this contribution we prove the existence of weak solutions to degenerate parabolic systems arising from the coupled moisture movement, transport of dissolved species and heat transfer through partially saturated porous materials. Physically motivated mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions are considered. Existence of a global weak solution of the problem is proved by means of semidiscretization in time and by passing to the limit from discrete approximations. Degeneration occurs in the nonlinear transport coefficients which are not assumed to be bounded below and…
One of the major problems in the theory of the porous medium equation is the regularity of the solutions and the free boundaries. Here we assume flatness of the solution in space time cylinder and derive smoothness of the interface after a small time, as well as smoothness of the solution in the positivity set and up to the free boundary for some time interval. We use these facts to prove the following eventual regularity result: solutions with compactly supported initial data are smooth after a finite time T that depends on mass and the size of the initial support. This result eliminates the …
We study a quite general family of nonlinear evolution equations of diffusive type with nonlocal effects. More precisely, we study porous medium equations with a fractional Laplacian pressure, and the problem is posed on a bounded space domain. We prove existence of weak solutions and suitable a priori bounds and regularity estimates.
This paper studies the derivation of the quadratic porous medium equation and a class of cross-diffusion systems from nonlocal interactions. We prove convergence of solutions of a nonlocal interaction equation, resp. system, to solutions of the quadratic porous medium equation, resp. cross-diffusion system, in the limit of a localising interaction kernel. The analysis is carried out at the level of the (nonlocal) partial differential equations and we use gradient flow techniques to derive bounds on energy, second order moments, and logarithmic entropy. The dissipation of the latter yields suff…
We consider a two-phase elliptic-parabolic moving boundary problem modelling an evaporation front in a porous medium. Our main result is a proof of short-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the corresponding nonlinear evolution problem in an $L_{p}$-setting. It relies critically on nonstandard optimal regularity results for a linear elliptic-parabolic system with dynamic boundary condition.
We investigate systems of degenerate parabolic equations idealizing reactive solute transport in porous media. Taking advantage of the inherent structure of the system that allows to deduce a scalar Generalized Porous Medium Equation for the sum of the solute concentrations, we show existence of a unique weak solution to the coupled system and derive regularity estimates. We also prove that the system supports solutions propagating with finite speed thus giving rise to free boundaries and interaction of compactly supported initial concentrations of different species.
In this paper we study the model of heat transfer in a porous medium with a critical diffusion. We obtain global existence and uniqueness of solutions to the equations of heat transfer of incompressible fluid in Besov spaces $\dot B^{3/p}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $1\le p\le\infty$ by the method of modulus of continuity and Fourier localization technique.
In this paper, we present a surprising two-dimensional contraction family for porous medium and fast diffusion equations. This approach provides new a priori estimates on the solutions, even for the standard heat equation.
We develop a theory of existence, uniqueness and regularity for a porous medium equation with fractional diffusion, $\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + (-Δ)^{1/2} (|u|^{m-1}u)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $m>m_*=(N-1)/N$, $N\ge1$ and $f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. An $L^1$-contraction semigroup is constructed and the continuous dependence on data and exponent is established. Nonnegative solutions are proved to be continuous and strictly positive for all $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$, $t>0$.
In this paper, we study the time periodic problem to a three-dimensional chemotaxis-Stokes model with porous medium diffusion $Δn^m$ and inhomogeneous mixed boundary conditions. By using a double-level approximation method and some iterative techniques, we obtain the existence and time-space uniform boundedness of weak time periodic solutions for any $m>1$. Moreover, we improve the regularity for $m\le\frac{4}{3}$ and show that the obtained periodic solutions are in fact strong periodic solutions.
We consider a coupled system consisting of a degenerate porous medium type of Keller-Segel system and Stokes system modeling the motion of swimming bacteria living in fluid and consuming oxygen. We establish the global existence of weak solutions and Hölder continuous solutions in dimension three, under the assumption that the power of degeneracy is above a certain number depending on given parameter values. To show Hölder continuity of weak solutions, we consider a single degenerate porous medium equation with lower order terms, and via a unified method of proof, we obtain Hölder regularity, …
Slightly compressible Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in a bounded 3D domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. These equations model fluids motion in porous media. The dissipativity of these equations in higher order energy spaces is obtained and regularity and smoothing properties of the solutions are studied. In addition, the existence of a global and an exponential attractors for these equations in a natural phase space is verified.
We study the "stiff pressure limit" of a nonlinear drift-diffusion equation, where the density is constrained to stay below the maximal value one. The challenge lies in the presence of a drift and the consequent lack of monotonicity in time. In the limit a Hele-Shaw-type free boundary problem emerges, which describes the evolution of the congested zone where density equals one. We discuss pointwise convergence of the densities as well as the $BV$ regularity of the limiting free boundary.
We provide a broad overview on qualitative versus quantitative regularity estimates in the theory of degenerate parabolic pdes. The former relates to DiBenedetto's revolutionary method of intrinsic scaling, while the latter is achieved by means of what has been termed geometric tangential analysis. We discuss, in particular, sharp estimates for the parabolic p-Poisson equation, for the porous medium equation and for the doubly nonlinear equation.
The system of compressible adiabatic flow through porous media is considered in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ in the present paper. The global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions are obtained when the initial data is near its equilibrium. We also show that the pressure of the system converges to its equilibrium state at the same $L^2$-rate $(1+t)^{-3/4}$ as the Navier-Stokes equations without heat conductivity, but the velocity of the system decays at the $L^2$-rate $(1+t)^{-5/4}$, which is faster than the $L^2$-rate $(1+t)^{-3/4}$ for the Navier-Stokes equations without heat conductivity [3].
In my previous paper I have contrived a Ginzburg-Landau heat flow with a time-dependent parameter and by using it, I constructed a harmonic heat flow into spheres with a monotonical inequality and a reverse Poincaré inequality. This paper establishes these two energy inequalities near the boundary and then by making the best of them, we discuss a partial boundary regularity. In addition to it, we demonstrate a whole domain's regularity under "the one-sided condition." This has been proposed by S.Hildebrandt and K.-O.Widman.
We establish a regularity criterion for the 3D full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conductivity and vacuum in a bounded domain.
A mathematical model for an elastoplastic porous continuum subject to large strains in combination with reversible damage (aging), evolving porosity, water and heat transfer is advanced. The inelastic response is modeled within the frame of plasticity for nonsimple materials. Water and heat diffuse through the continuum by a generalized Fick-Darcy law in the context of viscous Cahn-Hilliard dynamics and by Fourier law, respectively. This coupling of phenomena is paramount to the description of lithospheric faults, which experience ruptures (tectonic earthquakes) originating seismic waves and f…
