In this article, we classify the characters associated to algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type, and over a quadratic field we show that there are at most elliptic points on such a Shimura curve for every sufficiently large prime number $p$. This is an analogue of the study of rational points or points over a quadratic field on the modular curve $X_0(p)$ by Mazur and one of the author (Momose). We also apply the result to a finiteness conjecture on abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion by Rasmussen-Tamagawa.
In this paper we formulate some conjectures about algebraic flows on Shimura varieties. In the first part of the paper we prove the `logarithmic Ax-Lindemann theorem'. We then prove a result concerning the topological closure of the images of totally geodesic subvarieties of symmetric spaces uniformising Shimura varieties. This is a special case of our conjectures.
In previous articles, we classified the characters associated to algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type, and over number fields in a certain large class we showed that there are at most elliptic points on such a Shimura curve for every sufficiently large prime number $p$. In this article, we obtain an effective bound of $p$ concerning algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type.
In the previous article, we classified the characters associated to algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type, and over a quadratic field we showed that there are at most elliptic points on such a Shimura curve for every sufficiently large prime number $p$. In this article, we get a similar result for points over number fields of higher degree on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type.
In previous articles, we classified the characters associated to algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type, and over number fields in a certain large class we showed that there are at most elliptic points on such a Shimura curve for every sufficiently large prime number $p$. In this article, we prove the non-existence of elliptic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type under a mild assumption. We also give an explicit example.
Jordan, Rotger and de Vera-Piquero proved that Shimura curves have no points rational over imaginary quadratic fields under a certain assumption. In this article, we expand their results to the case of number fields of higher degree. We also give counterexamples to the Hasse principle on Shimura curves.
We give a formula for the class number of an arbitrary CM algebraic torus over $\mathbb{Q}$. This is proved based on results of Ono and Shyr. As applications, we give formulas for numbers of polarized CM abelian varieties, of connected components of unitary Shimura varieties and of certain polarized abelian varieties over finite fields. We also give a second proof of our main result.
We compute the arithmetic intersection numbers of certain Heegner divisors on integral models of Shimura curves over Q. Our formulas generalize the formulas of Gross-Kohnen-Zagier for intersection numbers of Heegner divisors on integral models of modular curves.
We describe an algorithm that computes explicit models of hyperelliptic Shimura curves attached to an indefnite quaternion algebra over Q and Atkin-Lehner quotients of them. It exploits Cerednik-Drinfeld's non-archimedean uniformisation of Shimura curves, a formula of Gross and Zagier for the endomorphism ring of Heegner points over Artinian rings and the connection between Ribet's bimodules and the specialization of Heegner points. As an application, we provide a list of equations of Shimura curves and quotients of them obtained by our algorithm that had been conjectured by Kurihara.
We study the Hodge-Tate period domain associated to a quaternionic Shimura curve at a prime of bad reduction, and give an explicit description of its Ekedahl-Oort stratification.
In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].
The $j$-function acts as a parametrization of the classical modular curve. Its values at complex multiplication (CM) points are called singular moduli and are algebraic integers. A Shimura curve is a generalization of the modular curve and, if the Shimura curve has genus 0, a rational parameterizing function exists and when evaluated at a CM point is again algebraic over $\mathbb{Q}$. This paper shows that the coordinate maps for the Shimura curves associated to the quaternion algebras with discriminants 6 and 10 are Borcherds lifts of vector-valued modular forms. This property is then used to…
Guo and Yang give defining equations for all geometrically hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0(D,N)$. In this paper we compute the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves using a variety of techniques. We also determine which rational points are CM for many of these curves.
We introduce the concept of quadratic modular symbol and study how these symbols are related to quadratic p-adic L-functions. These objects were introduced in [3] in the case of modular curves. In this paper, we discuss a method to attach quadratic modular symbols and quadratic p-adic L-functions to more general Shimura curves.
In this note we give an algorithm to explicitly construct the modular parametrization of an elliptic curve over the rationals given the Weierstrass function $\wp (z)$.
Shimura curves are moduli spaces of abelian surfaces with quaternion multiplication. Models of Shimura curves are very important in number theory. Klein's icosahedral invariants $\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B}$ and $\mathfrak{C}$ give the Hilbert modular forms for $\sqrt{5}$ via the period mapping for a family of $K3$ surfaces. Using the period mappings for several families of $K3$ surfaces, we obtain explicit models of Shimura curves with small discriminant in the weighted projective space ${\rm Proj} (\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B},\mathfrak{C}])$.
Let $D > 546$ be the discriminant of an indefinite rational quaternion algebra. We show that there are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $l/\mathbb Q$ such that the twist of the Shimura curve $X^D$ by the main Atkin-Lehner involution $w_D$ and $l/\mathbb Q$ violates the Hasse Principle over $\mathbb Q$.
We study a p-adic Shimura-Maass operator in the context of Mumford curves defined by C. Franc is his Ph.D. Thesis. We prove that this operator arises from a splitting of the Hodge filtration, thus answering a question in Franc. We also study the relation of this operator with generalized Heegner cycles, in the spirit of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna and Brooks.
In this paper we give a method for studying global rational points on certain quotients of Shimura curves by Atkin-Lehner involutions. We obtain explicit conditions on such quotients for rational points to be ``trivial'' (coming from CM points only) and exhibit an explicit infinite family of such quotients satisfying these conditions.
We describe an algorithm for computing certain quaternionic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree for GL2(Qp). As an application, we describe an algorithm to obtain (conjectural) equations for the canonical embedding of Shimura curves.
We give a new proof of Faltings's p-adic Eichler-Shimura decomposition of the modular curves via BGG methods and the Hodge-Tate period map. The key property is the relation between the Tate module and the Faltings extension, which was already used in the original proof. Then, we construct overconvergent Eichler-Shimura (ES) maps for the modular curves providing ''the second half'' of the overconvergent ES map of Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens. We use higher Coleman theory on the modular curve developed by Boxer-Pilloni to show that the small slope part of the ES maps interpolates the classical p-adi…
In this paper we study the geodesic continued fraction in the case of the Shimura curve coming from the $(2,3,7)$-triangle group. We construct a certain continued fraction expansion of real numbers using the so-called coding of the geodesics on the Shimura curve, and prove the Lagrange type periodicity theorem for the expansion which captures the fundamental relative units of quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(\cos(2π/7))$ with rank one relative unit groups. We also discuss the convergence of these continued fractions.
We give an explicit description of fundamental domains associated to the $p$-adic uniformisation of families of Shimura curves of discriminant $Dp$ and level $N\geq 1$, for which the one-sided ideal class number $h(D,N)$ is $1$. The obtained results generalise those in \cite[Ch. IX]{Gerritzen_vanderPut1980} for Shimura curves of discriminant $2p$ and level $N=1$. The method we present here enables us to find Mumford curves covering Shimura curves, together with a free system of generators for the associated Schottky groups, $p$-adic good fundamental domains and their stable reduction-graphs. T…
We prove that the set of CM points on the Shimura curve associated to an Eichler order inside an indefinite quaternion $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, is in bijection with the set of certain classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms, where $p$ is a prime dividing the discriminant of the quaternion algebra. The classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms are obtain by the action of a discrete and cocompact subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ arising from the $p$-adic uniformization of the Shimura curve. We finally compute families of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms associated to an infinite fa…
Let F be a totally real number field. Using a recent geometric approach developed by Andreatta and Iovita we construct several variables p-adic families of finite slope quaternionic automorphic forms over F. It is achieved by interpolating the modular sheaves defined over some auxiliary unitary Shimura curves. Secondly, we attach p-adic L-functions to triples of ordinary p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms. This is done by relating trilinear periods to some trilinear products over unitary Shimura curves which can be interpolated adapting the work of Liu-Zhang-Zhang to our fa…
We extend methods of Greenberg and the author to compute in the cohomology of a Shimura curve defined over a totally real field with arbitrary class number. Via the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence, we thereby compute systems of Hecke eigenvalues associated to Hilbert modular forms of arbitrary level over a totally real field of odd degree. We conclude with two examples which illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithms.
We give large families of Shimura curves defined by congruence conditions, all of whose twists lack $p$-adic points for some $p$. For each such curve we give analytically large families of counterexamples to the Hasse principle via the descent (or equivalently étale Brauer-Manin) obstruction to rational points applied to étale coverings coming from the level structure. More precisely, we find infinitely many quadratic fields defined using congruence conditions such that a twist of a related Shimura curve by each of those fields violates the Hasse principle. As a minimal example, we find the tw…
In this paper we introduce the notion of Shimura's period symbols over function fields in positive characteristic and establish their fundamental properties. We further formulate and prove a function field analogue of Shimura's conjecture on the algebraic independence of period symbols. Our results enable us to verify the algebraic independence of the coordinates of any nonzero period vector of an abelian t-module with complex multiplication whose CM type is non-degenerate and defined over an algebraic function field. This is an extension of Yu's work on Hilbert-Blumenthal t-modules.
We give a new construction of overconvergent modular forms of arbitrary weights, defining them in terms of functions on certain affinoid subsets of Scholze's infinite-level modular curve. These affinoid subsets, and a certain canonical coordinate on them, play a role in our construction which is strongly analogous with the role of the upper half-plane and its coordinate `z' in the classical analytic theory of modular forms. As one application of these ideas, we define and study an overconvergent Eichler-Shimura map in the context of compact Shimura curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, proving stronger an…
Up to isomorphism over C, every simple principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 3 is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve of genus 3. Furthermore, this curve is either a hyperelliptic curve or a plane quartic. Given a sextic CM field K, we show that if there exists a hyperelliptic Jacobian with CM by K, then all principally polarized abelian varieties that are Galois conjugated to it are hyperelliptic. Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we give an algorithm for computing approximations of the invariants of the initial curve, as well as their Galois conjugates. This allows us ton d…
In 1914, Ramanujan gave a list of 17 identities expressing $1/π$ as linear combinations of values of hypergeometric functions at certain rational numbers. Since then, identities of similar nature have been discovered by many authors. Nowadays, one of the standard approaches to this kind of identities uses the theory of modular curves. In this paper, we will consider the case of Shimura curves and obtain Ramanujan-type formulas involving special values of hypergeometric functions and products of Gamma values. The product of Gamma values are related to periods of elliptic curves with complex mul…
Let f be a newform, as specified by its Hecke eigenvalues, on a Shimura curve X. We describe a method for evaluating f. The most interesting case is when X arises as a compact quotient of the hyperbolic plane, so that classical q-expansions are not available. The method takes the form of an explicit, rapidly-convergent formula that is well-suited for numerical computation. We apply it to the problem of computing modular parametrizations of elliptic curves, and illustrate with some numerical examples.
Let $X$ be a Shimura curve of genus zero. In this paper, we first characterize the spaces of automorphic forms on $X$ in terms of Schwarzian differential equations. We then devise a method to compute Hecke operators on these spaces. An interesting by-product of our analysis is the evaluation $$_2F_1(1/24,7/24,5/6, -\frac{2^{10}\cdot3^3\cdot5}{11^4})=\sqrt6 \sqrt[6]{\frac{11}{5^5}} $$ and other similar identities.
In this paper, we will obtain new algebraic transformations of the $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions. The main novelty in our approach is the interpretation of identities among $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions as identities among automorphic forms on different Shimura curves.
Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct primes. Consider the Shimura curve $\mathcal{X}$ associated to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $pq$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian variety of $\mathcal{X}$, which is an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$. For an odd prime $\ell$, we provide sufficient conditions for the non-existence of rational points of order $\ell$ on $J$. As an application, we find some non-trivial subgroups of the kernel of an isogeny from the new quotient of $J_0(pq)$ to $J$.
Consider a Shimura curve $X^D_0(N)$ over the rational numbers. We determine criteria for the twist by an Atkin-Lehner involution to have points over a local field. As a corollary we give a new proof of the theorem of Jordan-Livné on $\mathbf{Q}_p$ points when $p\mid D$ and for the first time give criteria for $\mathbf{Q}_p$ points when $p\mid N$. We also give congruence conditions for roots modulo $p$ of Hilbert class polynomials.
Poonen and Stoll have shown that the reduced Shafarevich-Tate group of a principally polarized abelian variety over a global field can have order twice a square (the odd case) as well as a square (the even case). For a curve over a global field, they give a local diophantine criterion for its jacobian to be even or odd. In this note we use the Cherednik-Drinfeld p-adic uniformization to study the local points and divisors on certain Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura curves. We exhibit an explicit family of such quotient curves over the rationals with odd jacobians, with genus going to infinity…
We show how to deduce the standard sign conjecture (a weakening of the Künneth standard conjecture) for Shimura varieties from some statements about discrete automorphic representations (Arthur's conjectures plus a bit more). We also indicate what is known (to us) about these statements.
We develop a general framework to study Szpiro's conjecture and the $abc$ conjecture by means of Shimura curves and their maps to elliptic curves, introducing new techniques that allow us to obtain several unconditional results for these conjectures. We first prove various general results about modular and Shimura curves, including bounds for the Manin constant in the case of additive reduction, a detailed study of maps from Shimura curves to elliptic curves and comparisons between their degrees, and lower bounds for the Petersson norm of integral modular forms on Shimura curves. Our main appl…
We study indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real fields F, and give an example of a cohomological construction of p-adic Jacquet-Langlands functoriality using completed cohomology. We also study the (tame) levels of p-adic automorphic forms on these quaternion algebras and give an analogue of Mazur's `level lowering' principle.
Given a modular form f of even weight larger than two and an imaginary quadratic field K satisfying a relaxed Heegner hypothesis, we construct a collection of CM cycles on a Kuga-Sato variety over a suitable Shimura curve which gives rise to a system of Galois cohomology classes attached to f enjoying the compatibility properties of an Euler system. Then we use Kolyvagin's method, as adapted by Nekovar to higher weight modular forms, to bound the size of the relevant Selmer group associated to f and K and prove the finiteness of the (primary part) of the Shafarevich-Tate group, provided that a…
In this paper, we seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics, i.e. a characterization, in terms of geometry mod p, of curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curves over the complex field. Specifically, we study the liftablity of a curve in moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties over k, char k=p. We show that some conditions on the l-adic monodromy over such a curve imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
