In this paper, various chaotic properties and their relationships for interval maps are discussed. It is shown that the proximal relation is an equivalence relation for any zero entropy interval map. The structure of the set of $f$-nonseparable pairs is well demonstrated and so is its relationship to Li-Yorke chaos. For a zero entropy interval map, it is shown that a pair is a sequence entropy pair if and only if it is $f$-nonseparable.
Moreover, some equivalent conditions of positive entropy which relate to the number "3" are obtained. It is shown that for an interval map if it is topological null, then the pattern entropy of every open cover is of polynomial order, answering a question by Huang and Ye when the space is the closed unit interval.
Dynamical systems on the interval were widely studied because they are among the simplest systems and nevertheless they turn out to have complex dynamics. Many works on chaos were inspired by the behaviour of interval maps. However these systems have many properties that are not found on other spaces. As a consequence, one-dimensional dynamics is very rich and worth a separate study. The aim of this book is to survey the relations between the various sorts of chaos and related notions for continuous interval maps. The papers on this topic are numerous but very scattered in the literature, some…
In this note we will discuss the notion of robust chaos, and show that (i) there are natural one-parameter families with robust chaos and (ii) hyperbolicity is dense within generic one-parameter families (and so these families are not robustly chaotic).
Recurrence determinism, one of the fundamental characteristics of recurrence quantification analysis, measures predictability of a trajectory of a dynamical system. It is tightly connected with the conditional probability that, given a recurrence, following states of the trajectory will be recurrences. In this paper we study recurrence determinism of interval dynamical systems. We show that recurrence determinism distinguishes three main types of $ω$-limit sets of zero entropy maps: finite, solenoidal without non-separable points, and solenoidal with non-separable points. As a corollary we obt…
A continuous map $f$ from a compact interval $I$ into itself is densely (resp. generically) chaotic if the set of points $(x,y)$ such that $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}|f^n(x)-f^n(y)|>0$ and $\liminf_{n\to+\infty} |f^n(x)-f^n(y)|=0$ is dense (resp. residual) in $I\times I$. We prove that if the interval map $f$ is densely but not generically chaotic then there is a descending sequence of invariant intervals, each of which containing a horseshoe for $f^2$. It implies that every densely chaotic interval map is of type at most $6$ for Sharkovsky's order (that is, there exists a periodic point of period …
We prove that the set of maps which exhibit distributional chaos of type 1 (DC1) is $C^0$-dense in the space of continuous self-maps of given any compact topological manifold (possibly with boundary).
A goal in the study of dynamics on the interval is to understand the transition to positive topological entropy. There is a conjecture from the 1980's that the only route to positive topological entropy is through a cascade of period doubling bifurcations. We prove this conjecture in natural families of smooth interval maps, and use it to study the structure of the boundary of mappings with positive entropy. In particular, we show that in families of mappings with a fixed number of critical points the boundary is locally connected, and for analytic mappings that it is a cellular set.
In their celebrated "Period three implies chaos" paper, Li and Yorke proved that if a continuous interval map f has a period 3 point then there is an uncountable scrambled set S on which f has very complicated dynamics. One question arises naturally: Can this set S be chosen invariant under f? The answer is positive for turbulent maps and negative otherwise. In this note, we shall use symbolic dynamics to achieve our goal. In particular, we obtain that the tent map T(x) = 1 - |2x-1| on [0, 1] has a dense uncountable invariant 1-scrambled set which consists of transitive points.
A continuous map $f$ on a compact metric space $X$ induces in a natural way the map $\tilde f$ on the hyperspace $\mathcal K(X)$ of all closed non-empty subsets of $X$. We study the question of transmission of chaos between $f$ and $\tilde f$. We deal with generic, generic $\varepsilon$-, dense and dense $\varepsilon$-chaos for interval maps. We prove that all four types of chaos transmit from $f$ to $\tilde f$, while the converse transmission from $\tilde f$ to $f$ is true for generic, generic $\varepsilon$- and dense $\varepsilon$-chaos. Moreover, the transmission of dense $\varepsilon$- and…
This paper deals whith the stabilization of any UPO of a chaotic map by modulation of a control parameter. It concentrates on proportional and delayed feedback control methods. Alternative types of these methods are proposed and their achievments are investigated analyticaly and numerically.
In this paper we analyze chaotic dynamics for two dimensional nonautonomous maps through the use of a nonautonomous version of the Conley-Moser conditions given previously. With this approach we are able to give a precise definition of what is meant by a chaotic invariant set for nonautonomous maps. We extend the nonautonomous Conley-Moser conditions by deriving a new sufficient condition for the nonautonomous chaotic invariant set to be hyperbolic. We consider the specific example of a nonautonomous Hénon map and give sufficient conditions, in terms of the parameters defining the map, for the…
We consider a class of skew product maps of interval diffeomorphisms over the doubling map. The interval maps fix the end points of the interval. It is assumed that the system has zero fiber Lyapunov exponent at one endpoint and zero or positive fiber Lyapunov exponent at the other endpoint. We prove the appearance of on-off intermittency. This is done using the equivalent description of chaotic walks: random walks driven by the doubling map. The analysis further relies on approximating the chaotic walks by Markov random walks, that are constructed using Markov partitions for the doubling map.
We study discontinuous interval maps generated by the action of erasing block substitutions on the binary expansion. After establishing some general properties of these maps, we categorize erasing block substitutions in a hierarchy of classes displaying progressively stronger erasing character. We investigate how this affects the dynamics of the corresponding interval maps, showing that the richest dynamical behavior (Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos, infinite topological entropy) is achieved at a precise step in this hierarchy, which we name completely erasing substitutions. KEYWORDS: Topological d…
Many definitions of chaos have appeared in the last decades and with them the question if they are equivalent in some more specific spaces. Our focus will be distributional chaos, first defined in 1994 and later subdivided into three major types (and even more subtypes). These versions of chaos are equivalent on a closed interval, but distinct in more complicated spaces. Since dendrites have much in common with the interval, we explore whether or not we can distinguish these kinds of chaos already on dendrites. In the end of the paper we will also briefly look at the correlation with other typ…
The main aim of this article is to show that maps with specification property have invariant distributionally scrambled sets and that this kind of scrambled set can be transferred from factor to extension under finite-to-one factor maps. This solves some open questions in the literature of the topic. We also show how our method can be applied in practice, taking as example Poincaré map of time-periodic nonautonomous planar differential equation $$ \dot{z}=v(t,z)=(1+e^{iκt}\abs{z}^2)\z^3 -N $$ where $κ$ and $N$ are sufficiently small positive real numbers.
We describe all possible bimodal over-twist patterns. In particular, we give an algorithm allowing one to determine what the left endpoint of the over-rotation interval of a given bimodal map is. We then define a new class of polymodal interval maps called well behaved, and generalize the above results onto well behaved maps.
A random chaotic interval map with noise which causes coarse-graining induces a finite-state Markov chain. For a map topologically conjugate to a piecewise-linear map with the Lebesgue measure being ergodic, we prove that the Shannon entropy for the induced Markov chain possesses a finite limit as the noise level tends to zero. In most cases, the limit turns out to be strictly greater than the Lyapunov exponent of the original map without noise.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
In the family of area-contracting Hénon-like maps with zero topological entropy we show that there are maps with infinitely many moduli of stability. Thus one cannot find all the possible topological types for non-chaotic area-contracting Hénon-like maps in a family with finitely many parameters. A similar result, but for the chaotic maps in the family, became part of the folklore a short time after Hénon used such maps to produce what was soon conjectured to be the first non-hyperbolic strange attractor in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our proof uses recent results about infinitely renormalisable area-cont…
For a dynamical system $(X,f)$, $X$ being a compact metric space with metric $d$ and $f$ being a continuous map $X\to X$, a set $S\subseteq X$ is scrambled if every pair $(x,y)$ of distinct points in $S$ is scrambled, i.e., $\liminf_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))>0$. The system $(X,f)$ is Li-Yorke chaotic if it has an uncountable scrambled set. It is known that, for interval and circle maps, the existence of a scrambled pair implies Li-Yorke chaos, in fact the existence of a Cantor scrambled set. We prove that the same result holds for graph maps. W…
We consider a smooth two-parameter family $f_{a,L}\colonθ\mapsto θ+a+LΦ(θ)$ of circle maps with a finite number of critical points. For sufficiently large $L$ we construct a set $A_L^{(\infty)}$ of $a$-values of positive Lebesgue measure for which the corresponding $f_{a,L}$ exhibits an exponential growth of derivatives along the orbits of the critical points. Our construction considerably improves the previous one of Wang and Young for the same class of families, in that the following asymptotic estimate holds: the Lebesgue measure of $A_L^{(\infty)}$ tends to full measure in $a$-space as $L$…
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We show that the connectedness of the set of parameters for which the over-rotation interval of a bimodal interval map is constant. In other words, the over-rotation interval is a monotone function of a bimodal interval map.
We prove that the flow generated by any interval map with zero topological entropy is minimally mean-attractable (MMA) and minimally mean-L-stable (MMLS). One of the consequences is that any oscillating sequence is linearly disjoint with all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy. In particular, the Möbius function is orthogonal to all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy (Sarnak's conjecture for interval maps). Another consequence is a non-trivial example of a flow having the discrete spectrum.
We study topological entropy of exactly Devaney chaotic maps on totally regular continua, i.e. on (topologically) rectifiable curves. After introducing the so-called P-Lipschitz maps (where P is a finite invariant set) we give an upper bound for their topological entropy. We prove that if a non-degenerate totally regular continuum X contains a free arc which does not disconnect X or if X contains arbitrarily large generalized stars then X admits an exactly Devaney chaotic map with arbitrarily small entropy. A possible application for further study of the best lower bounds of topological entrop…
We studied topological and metric properties of the so-called interval translation maps (ITMs). For these maps, we introduced the maximal invariant measure and study its properties. Further, we study how the invariant measures depend on the parameters of the system. These results were illustrated by a simple example or a risk management model where interval translation maps appear~naturally.
As the parameters of a map are varied an attractor may vary continuously in the Hausdorff metric. The purpose of this paper is to explore the continuation of chaotic attractors. We argue that this is not a helpful concept for smooth unimodal maps for which periodic windows fill parameter space densely, but that for piecewise-smooth maps it provides a way to delineate structure within parameter regions of robust chaos and form a stronger notion of robustness. We obtain conditions for the continuity of an attractor and demonstrate the results with coupled skew tent maps, the Lozi map, and the bo…
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We study the jump of topological entropy for $C^r$ interval or circle maps. We prove in particular that the topological entropy is continuous at any $f \in C^r([0; 1])$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{\log^+ \|f'\|_\infty}{r}$. To this end we study the continuity of the entropy of the Buzzi-Hofbauer diagrams associated to $C^r$ interval maps.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
In this short note we describe a simple but remarkably effective method for rigorously estimating Lyapunov exponents for expanding maps of the interval. We illustrate the applicability of this method with some standard examples.
In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
A route to chaos is studied in 3-dimensional maps of logistic type. Mechanisms of period doubling for invariant closed curves (ICC) are found for specific 3-dimensional maps. These bifurcations cannot be observed for ICC in the 2-dimensional case. When the parameter of the system is modified, localized oscillations occur on the ICC that give rise to weakly chaotic rings, then to chaotic attractors, which finally disappear by contact bifurcations. These maps can be considered as models for the symbiotic interaction of three species.
Chaotic dynamics can be quite heterogeneous in the sense that in some regions the dynamics are unstable in more directions than in other regions. When trajectories wander between these regions, the dynamics is complicated. We say a chaotic invariant set is heterogeneous when arbitrarily close to each point of the set there are different periodic points with different numbers of unstable dimensions. We call such dynamics heterogeneous chaos (or hetero-chaos), While we believe it is common for physical systems to be hetero-chaotic, few explicit examples have been proved to be hetero-chaotic. Her…
The concept of "$A$-coupled-expanding" map for a transition matrix $A$ has been studied as one of the most important criteria of chaos in the past years. In this paper, the lower bound of the topological entropy for strictly $A$-coupled-expanding maps is studied as a criterion for chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, which is less conservative and more generalized than the latest result is presented. Furthermore, some conditions for $A$-coupled-expanding maps excluding the strictness to be factors of subshifts of finite type are derived. In addition, the topological entropy of partition-$A$-coupled…
We consider the ultradiscretization of a solvable one-dimensional chaotic map which arises from the duplication formula of the elliptic functions. It is shown that ultradiscrete limit of the map and its solution yield the tent map and its solution simultaneously. A geometric interpretation of the dynamics of the tent map is given in terms of the tropical Jacobian of a certain tropical curve. Generalization to the maps corresponding to the $m$-th multiplication formula of the elliptic functions is also discussed.
For almost all interval exchange maps T_0, with combinatorics of genus g>=2, we construct affine interval exchange maps T which are semi-conjugate to T_0 and have a wandering interval.
The use of artificial neural networks as models of chaotic dynamics has been rapidly expanding. Still, a theoretical understanding of how neural networks learn chaos is lacking. Here, we employ a geometric perspective to show that neural networks can efficiently model chaotic dynamics by becoming structurally chaotic themselves. We first confirm neural network's efficiency in emulating chaos by showing that a parsimonious neural network trained only on few data points can reconstruct strange attractors, extrapolate outside training data boundaries, and accurately predict local divergence rates…
We extend and improve the existing characterization of the dynamics of general quadratic real polynomial maps with coefficients that depend on a single parameter $λ$, and generalize this characterization to cubic real polynomial maps, in a consistent theory that is further generalized to real $n$-th degree real polynomial maps. In essence, we give conditions for the stability of the fixed points of any real polynomial map with real fixed points. In order to do this, we have introduced the concept of Canonical Polynomial Maps which are topologically conjugate to any polynomial map of the same d…
The aim of this paper is to show how extracting dynamical behavior and ergodic properties from deterministic chaos with the assistance of exact invariant measures. On the one hand, we provide an approach to deal with the inverse problem of finding nonlinear interval maps from a given invariant measure. Then, we show how to identify ergodic properties by means of transitions along the phase space via exact measures. On the other hand, we discuss quantitatively how infinite measures imply maps having subexponential Lyapunov instability (weakly chaotic), as opposed to finite measure ergodic maps,…
The simplest examples of chaotic maps are linear, area-preserving maps on the circle, torus, or product of tori; respectively known as the Bernoulli map, the cat map, and the recently introduced "spatiotemporal" cat map. We study correlation functions in these maps. For the Bernoulli map, we compute the correlation functions in a variety of ways: by direct computation of the integral, through Fourier series, through symbolic dynamics, and through periodic orbits. In relation to the more standard treatment in terms of eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius operator, some of these methods are si…
Maps $f,g\colon I\to I$ are called strongly commuting if $f\circ g^{-1}=g^{-1}\circ f$. We show that strongly commuting, piecewise monotone maps $f,g$ can be decomposed into a finite number of invariant intervals (or period 2 intervals) on which $f,g$ are either both open maps, or at least one of them is monotone. As a consequence, we show that strongly commuting piecewise monotone interval maps have a common fixed point. Results of the paper also have implications in understanding dynamical properties of certain maps on inverse limit spaces.
Coupled map lattices (CMLs) are prototypical dynamical systems on networks/graphs. They exhibit complex patterns generated via the interplay of diffusive/Laplacian coupling and nonlinear reactions modelled by a single iterated map at each node; the maps are often taken as unimodal, e.g., logistic or tent maps. In this letter, we propose a class of higher-order coupled dynamical systems involving the hypergraph Laplacian, which we call coupled hypergraph maps (CHMs). By combining linearized (in-)stability analysis of synchronized states, hypergraph spectral theory, and numerical methods, we det…
In this paper we study systems of $N$ uniformly expanding coupled maps when $N$ is finite but large. We introduce self-consistent transfer operators that approximate the evolution of measures under the dynamics, and quantify this approximation explicitly with respect to $N$. Using this result, we prove that uniformly expanding coupled maps satisfy propagation of chaos when $N\rightarrow \infty$, and characterize the absolutely continuous invariant measures for the finite dimensional system. The main working assumption is that the expansion is not too small and the strength of the interactions …
In this paper, a rigorous analysis of the behavior of the standard logistic map, Logistic Tent system (LTS), Logistic-Sine system (LSS) and Tent-Sine system (TSS) is performed using 0-1 test and three state test (3ST). In this work, it has been proved that the strength of the chaotic behavior is not uniform. Through extensive experiment and analysis, the strong and weak chaotic regions of LTS, LSS and TSS have been identified. This would enable researchers using these maps, to have better choices of control parameters as key values, for stronger encryption. In addition, this paper serves as a …
